:stare: At least do me the courtesy of a semicolon next time.
Long time getting around to it, but I do apologize for that.

Says you, Kari. I've had a love affair with semicolons for as long as I've been writing papers. :P
Homeless semicolon #1

It didn't say anything though, just waved.
Homeless semicolon #2

I know that's a lot of generalities, not very pacific.
Of course, most everyone leaves semicolons on the street, too; Dark just happens to be the one I am beating up on. Because of his puns. It's kay, Lyssa. <pats>

I think I tend to use them a bit too much. Probably not so much here, though.

actually, semicolons separate complete thoughts

"just waved" and "not very pacific" are, neither of them, complete thoughts...

i used to over use semicolons like that, too. then i discovered comas and moved on to coma splicing (it's more fun) since most of my teachers got angry for my mis appropriation of semicolons where periods should be present....BUT IT BELONGS TO THE SAME THOUGHT :'( they just jealous i can make long thoughts look like run-ons when they are just completing the description and making things clear T_T

anyway...so yeah...a semicolon may be used in place of a period (if it can't, you're using it wrong  )

I don't think leaving a subject or subject and verb out means it's not a 'complete thought'.
Essentially, you have "It didn't say anything, though. It just waved." and "I know that's a lot of generalities. It's not very pacific." So both are composed of two complete thoughts.

On the other hand if we apply Me's criteria, I think in the first case it would be "It didn't say anything, but just waved." and "I know that's a lot of generalities and not very pacific." So then the first would have a comma and the second a semicolon.

But the "just waved" is not a conflicting train of thought; it supports the previous statement. I would have used a dash, or a straight up colon to preempt the example if not a semicolon...

The "didn't say" and "just waved" are in contrast; "just waved" is not simply supporting the "didn't say" but elaborates on an alternative that did occur.
A dash is usually a good alternative, when in doubt, but a colon would have totally disrupted the flow (which is why I practically never use it except when making an outright declaration).

But the "just waved" is technically supporting the statement of "it didn't say anything" because it still didn't say anything; it only waved...

It could be worse. She hasnt' keeled anyone over it. At least, not yet. And English, particularly written English, has always been difficult to master.
