I always wondered why some people got so worked up about the Mayan calendar ending; I mean, it's not like it's the end of the world, is it? :pirate:

oops, i seem to have skipped over it :>

anyway, we knew it wasn't true, because the mayans already died off...their world ended before they thought it would which makes them inaccurate B' and an untrustworthy source for apocalypse

i bet this day will be as memorable/remembered as the last predicted date :B

Actually, Archaeology magazine had most of an issue a month or so back that talked about the whole thing. Here is the short version. Turns out for one there are Mayans still around, and two they Still aren't concerned with apocalypse happening this year (or having not happened).

I've seen part of documentary where they has a short interview with a Mayan shaman who said the world had already ended and people just haven't noticed it :P
Anyway, the Mayan calender hasn't ended, it just continues in a new cycle.

Just goes to show, you shouldn't turn your back on the world.

... Except maybe to look at the stars or to sleep.

towr, you reminded me of spending one freezing night outside watching a meteor shower. Every time I was about to go in there'd be one more bright one and we'd be like "just a little longer"

Nevermind it took hours just to restore feeling to everywhere when we finally went inside.

They hadn't invented blankets where you were yet?

My dad sometimes tells of the days he woke up with frost on his blankets, if the nights were particularly cold.

The sleeping bags were rated to -40, and we were not in shirt sleeves. But you lay in -20s ice 'n snow for a handful of hours and then walk through it to your house...

Do you have any idea how long I'd have to walk to get from a place where it gets to -20F back to my home? :P
