The ancient greeks were pretty strict environmentalists; they sentenced Socrates to death for heir-polution. |

Hadn't realized there was a reply (got too used to only looking at/for the first two threads here). Hmmm... well the key element lies with this: The phrase '打东东' which means 'hit stuff' but basically is a slangy way to say do... stuff. As in: I dunno, we hang out and do stuff. (the phrase may actually be 打动动 but if so the error was handed to me by the Chinese girl who taught me the joke) But 东东 alone doesn't necessarily just mean 'stuff' ANYWAY So the story is that a bunch of scientists got together, and decided that they wanted to take a survey of all the penguins in Antarctica to find out what they did with their time. So they interviewed a penguin asking: "So what do you do all day?" Penguin: "Oh, just eat food, sleep, 打东东.“ Which they thought was kinda interesting, but it was only the first penguin so, they asked another. "What do you do all day?" Penguin 2: "Eat food, sleep, 打东东." Huh. So they kept asking more penguins the same question 'what do you do all day?' and every single one gave the same answer "Eat food, sleep, 打东东." They carefully covered all of Antarctica end-to-end to ask every individual penguin what they do, and each one still used the self-same words "Eat food, sleep, 打东东." Until finally they'd checked and double-checked (as scientists are wont to do) and they were asking the very last penguin on the entire continent. "Okay, what do you do all day?" Final Penguin: "I eat food, sleep." Scientist: "Eh, you don't 打东东?" Final Penguin: "Oh, I'm 东东." Spoiler: click to toggle

After two lines I recognized that we have a similar sort of joke in Dutch as well (but much cruder and too inappropriate to tell/explain at this forum). But it's about gnomes that have "magic", except for the last one. I suppose you could construct an English version where people beat Al Coholism or something

Seems a little contrived towr. Jokes in Chinese rely almost entirely on the flexibility of certain 'words' or the fact that two words can be pronounced exactly the same. Which of course makes translation difficult. |

So the Chinese are the ultimate punners? Though I think puns are the staple of jokes in most languages. |

Likely true, on that second point. Chinese do weird things with it sometimes though, to my grant you American eyes |

Got into a refreshingly protracted geology pun exchange over the dinner table with family this evening. Used to happen all the time, hadn't realized how much I missed doing it. |
