"more people are bitten by other people in New York City than by sharks worldwide" (source) (NB I haven't checked the factuality) |

"statistically speaking, it would likely take 750,000 years for a child left alone in a public space to be snatched by a stranger" (source) (NB I estimate that's about 66 children per year in the US, if you want an order-of-magnitude plausibility check. NB2 after waiting 20 of those 750,000 years to be picked up by a stranger, you definitely qualify as a homeless person rather than a child.) |

....Interesting. o.0 (Though it leads to the question of what the statistical probability is that a child left alone would stay in a public space for 20 years). |

and also how old the child would normally be when left alone in a public space...most people are no longer considered children well before reaching 20 years lol

I would not be surprised if that bit about bites is true. Heard surprisingly often about cases ranging from crazy homeless people to domestic disputes to... well everything in between and a few outliers, while I lived in the City. |

So I have to ask if any of you have encountered What If? It's a blog where he goes through the real science of answering ridiculous questions. |

Yup, been following it for a while. He has a book out as well. And he's been on the Colbert Report to promote it. (And probably dozens of other shows.) |

yeah, it's pretty cool that he takes some pretty absurd questions and can answer them so down to earth

Fun fact of the day: today is world toilet day Yes, they will give anything its own day. But sanitation is kind of important. |

I dunno if I can' call that fact 'fun' towr. And I've seen some people's toilets... Sanitation is not the toilet focus that it perhaps should be. |

I suppose it is "fun" in the sense that someone slipping on a banana is "funny"; isolated from the consequences it's funny, but that doesn't mean anyone's laughing about ending up in the hospital. |

I dunno. The mythbusters episode where they dealt with the whole 'banana peel slip' concept was pretty dang hilarous to watch, and I didn't feel guilty (granted, they were doing things like taking safety precautions...) |

But yeah - sorta like reading the Darwin Awards. You might laugh, but you feel a little bad inside for it. |

There's blue strawberries (and black, and green, and yellow, and purple) And apparently you can buy seeds for them on ebay It's a shame ebay only gives you 60 days to give feedback on an item. [edit]Actually, might be too good to be true.[/edit] Edited by towr, Jan 10 2015, 09:07 AM.
