The Basics

Your Character's Name: Aila Scandium

Your Character's Age: 24

Religious Belief: None, at least for now

Alignment: Lawful Good

Birthplace: Corindis

Species/Race: Human

Marital Status: Unmarried

Does your character have any children? If so, provide basic details. No

Companions/pets: A black cat named Inkpot. Temperamental, but generally enjoys cuddling and will put her head underneath Aila's hand for petting. Not a fan of strangers.

What does your character look like? (physique, height, hair colour, eyes, skin tone, etc. Otherwise pictures are nice too.) Average build. Mousy brown hair to about her mid-back, typically braided to one side with odd pieces sticking out. Light brown eyes with a barely-noticeable ring of green in the center. Pale skin, with freckles dotting her nose and cheeks. Wears clean but simple clothing; wool, nothing extravagant.

Character Traits and Personality

(If you provide good traits, you must also provide negative traits that are equal to, or higher.)

Your Character's Likes: Reading; she's a scholar, so that really goes without saying. She has a particular interest in the history of magic in the humans of Merridel, but the literature is spotty. It isn't uncommon for her to spend days tracking down someone's great-great-grandmother to ask where her great-uncle learned to conjure flames. Unfortunately, she has a greater affinity for books than people.

Your Character's Dislikes: Dealing with tipsy people. It should not be as common as it is to show up at the Great Library in the middle of the night looking for one's room in the inn. They're on opposite ends of the city.

Good Habits: Excellent tipper, possibly because her tastes aren't extravagant and, being the second daughter of nobility, she can afford it.

Bad Habits: Still fiddles with the tip of her braid when she's thinking. Prone to interrupting if she thinks she knows what someone's about to say.

Good Characteristics: Determined, clever, loyal, principled

Character Flaws: Stubborn, cowardly, sometimes a know-it-all

Strengths: Quick and logical thinker. Excellent storyteller-- has a small crowd of children who come to listen each week. Has shape-shifting magic, but can only transform into a kestrel (much to Inkpot's confusion).

Weaknesses: Slow runner. Physically weak.

Temperament/Personality: Polite but passive-aggressive when angry.

Hobbies/Interests: Reads bad romance novels in her spare time, but pretends it's for the plot. Her fellow scholars at the Great Library don't know.

Pet Peeves: Bad grammar. Cheating and corruption.

Any Specific Behaviours/Mannerisms (Good and Bad)?

Does Your Character Have Any Phobias? Terrified of most things. Pretends that she isn't, which is usually good enough to get through the fear.

Does Your Character Have any Quirks? Will sometimes accidentally verge into Speish when she's speaking in Merridelian. Neither are her native tongue of Corindi.

Any Morals and/or Values? Strong moral code. Tends to believe in what (on Earth) would be called prima facie duties as a guide to right and wrong.

What Does Your Character Never Leave Home
Without?
A knapsack with two books and five or so coppers sewn into the lining, a biscuit, a cold sausage wrapped in paper, and a warm, faded blue cloak. Boots, if she remembers to wear them before setting out.

Attributes, Education and Training

(If you provide good skills and attributes, you must also provide worst skills and attributes that are equal to, or higher.)

Character's Class: Noble turned scholar.

Occupation: Archivist at the Great Library of Merridel.

Best Skills: Good sense of direction and eye for detail. Able to locate and navigate passages others don't notice.

Worst Skills: Awful ability to navigate her way through crowds. Too loud. Too... crowded.

Education: Tutored privately in Corindis until she turned 15, when she received her mother's permission to study as an apprentice at the Great Library. Worked her way up to archivist in a matter of years (finding a cache of old scrolls in a secret passage helped matters).

Goals and Ambitions: Wants to become Chief Librarian so that she can make some changes (free classes in reading and writing for the non-wealthy, for starters), but the current head is, at 145, tenaciously holding on to his position.

Does your character speak any languages? Corindi, Merridelian, Speish (a dialect that branched off Old Merridelian). She can read Old Merridelian thanks to her research.

Accent/Speech Pattern (dialects, accents, etc.) if any: Corindi accent, which is lower and slower than native Merridelian, almost drawling.

Everyday Equipment: Quill, parchment, inkwell, a book or two or seven.

Past and Present

Please provide at the very least, a basic backstory for your character. Non-required suggestions to help get you started: Where was your character born and raised? How did your “family” and upbringing influence your character’s life from childhood until now? If not born in Merridel, what brought your character here? Any significant life events?

Aila was born the second daughter of a wealthy noble family in Corindis. Being the "spare" gave her the freedom to read and learn what she would while her older sister Diana prepared to become the family head. Their relationship was (and is) surprisingly uncomplicated; both still exchange lengthy monthly letters. When Aila decided to head to Merridel for her studies, her family granted her a generous allowance (most of which goes unused but for anonymous donations to various soup kitchens around the city and copious book purchases). She stumbled soon after arrival upon a network tunnel under the library that branches out to span most of the city. She has yet to map it all, but she has found numerous ancient tomes and artifacts tucked in its cavernous rooms.
