Exaggerating lag; In-game problems?

I play as a new comer to this server.
Before anything started, the extreme in-game lagness bugged me.
It was smooth when logging in the game, so I don't think there's any problems with my connections.
Just the in-game lagness is troublesome.
Now I'm still stuck in starter field, as the monsters and portals don't work.
It took 5 minutes or around that to slay a snail.
What could be the problem? Any ideas?

Added: still seeing the server progresses smoothly, other players leveling up, monsters dying, announcements and megaphones.
While I can still do nothing.

You sir, lag. Its not the server. I just pwnt Horntail in 18 seconds and it died. It didn't take 5 minutes as you exaggerated

Exactly, which I know that should be one of the reasons as I looked around.
Still, hoping for alternate solutions.

No, but I run Windows XD
PS : If you want to lower lag, you may want to change settings and change them to fast. It'll make the stuff look low quality though, nevertheless, it should lag less.
