James sighed as he walked into the classroom. Chemistry was his least favourite class, especially the theory lessons. He glanced across at the different apparatus set up throughout the room, and raised his eyebrows. James sat down, and reached for his bag to get out his belongings, just as Mr Taylor began to talk. When the teacher said they wouldn't need their books, James stopped and straightened his spine, turning his attention to the front. The instructions seem simple enough, James thought to himself as he collected some goggles from the back of the classroom. He glanced around the room to see who he might want to partner up with for the experiment, walking back to his bench as he did this. James sat up on his stool, placing his hands on the desk in front of him. Once Taylor had finished writing the method on the board, James skimmed over it. He raised his eyebrows again; it seemed easy, and he was unsure as to why this lesson had been classified as 'intermediate'. As the teacher allowed them to start, the class began to shift about as people moved to their friends to partner up. James, however, stayed in his seat and frowned a little -- he wasn't sure if he even knew anyone in this class. He decided, then, to let someone else come to him. James' hand rubbed over the large scar on his wrist. He could still feel it tingling from the incident in the library. James took a deep breath, and looked down at it, tracing the pattern of the dental indents with his finger. The muscles in his arm twitched, and he frowned, moving his hand away. For a moment, James recalled the night that he gained the scar -- the night he was turned into a werewolf. Dread crawled up his spine as he tried to shake the memory from playing in his mind. You're in a lesson. Don't act weird. Sitting up straight, James looked at the person who had approached him -- he hadn't noticed them as he had been staring at his scar. Hoping that they hadn't seen him acting like a complete idiot, James offered them a smile. "Wan'to partner up?" |

Ryan had been looking around the classroom, giving each section a momentary glance. He was already in the room when everyone else had been walking in...that was just the custom nowadays. First in, last to leave. Chemistry was never his strong point but he really enjoyed participating in the lesson. He had never minded partnering up with someone and doing all the work himself and it looked like today would present that opportunity. He had approached James slowly - whilst he chewed on the back end of his pencil loosely. He was quite curious - mainly because of the behaviour of James who was just fiddling with his wrist instead of partnering up as instructed. Once James turned and spoke, he offered a smile of reassurance - to show that he had no judgemental thoughts against James - as if he knew James might be embarrassed - however he was just more curious with James' behaviour rather than being focused on being kind, so he spoke in a soft and low tone. "Sure, why not, I mean..it seems like everyone else is so eager so we should at least look the part." |

James sighed inwardly with relief at Ryan's words. He stood up from the stool and shoved it under the bench -- a habit that had been drilled into him by this very chemistry teacher from Year 7. Picking up the beaker containing the water, he handed it to Ryan. "I'll label t'beakers. M'name's James, by t'way." James reached for a permanent marker as he spoke, taking one from the centre of the bench. He bent over and marked the beakers as 'sugar', 'salt' and 'NaHCO3'. "Is there any sugar on t'table?" James wondered aloud as he looked across the bench. He moved his hand up and pushed it through his dark hair, separating the strands as he fanned his fingers out whilst moving it further back. Watching the class move and interact with each other for a moment, James wondered, for a brief second, how they managed to make social interaction seem so easy. To him it was draining -- especially as he would rather die on the spot than make anyone feel uncomfortable in a situation. That train of thought brought James back to meeting that vampire in the library the other day. He didn't think he had done anything to make Lucian feel uncomfortable necessarily. Then again, the stoic man had been hard to read and seemed to only want one thing -- Renaissance books. Looking over at Ryan, James remembered where he was and shook the thoughts from his mind with a minute, barely visible shake of his head. James smiled at the other boy and rubbed his wrist in an absent-minded action. Edited by James Cavanaugh, May 24 2017, 03:29 PM.
