Cerulean City "Sorry, son, but I can't help you." The old man with the Mankey shook his head. "I've told you everything I know already, and done so at considerable risk to myself. I'm sorry, but even if I could tell you more, I wouldn't... this is way bigger than what I'm willing to keep risking myself over. I have a wife." "I understand." Keith Davis - usually just called Davis - shook his head slowly. "Though this leaves me yet another dead end..." "Wait." The old man's eyes lit up suddenly. "I can give you one more thing. A name... someone who knows more." "Trap!" Davis's Trapinch suddenly called out, pressing to its trainer's knee firmly. "Then give me the name." Davis reached down to stroke the agitated Pokemon's head lightly. "Martin. Likes to eat at the Sun Stone Cafe here in town, near the Gym. If you're going to find out anything, he's who you need to talk to." "Trap!" Trapinch hopped around Davis's legs. "Thank you." Davis turned to go, brushing his light blonde hair back before pausing. "I haven't paid you today..." "No need. That was free." The old man walked off, his Mankey loping beside him, and Davis started toward the Gym. As he went, his Pokemon leapt in front of him. "TRAP!" |

"You should listen to it. I think its trying to tell you something." A smiling voice came from behind him. Davis turned and saw the mop of chestnut brown hair. He than looked down to see the rest of a broad shouldered man with an amused smile and intense blue eyes. The new comer was a couple of inches shorter than Davis, but looked to be a few years older. At his side was a bulbasaur, that went up to Davis's Trapinch and looked at it inquiringly. "Bulba!" "TRAP!" "BULBA!!" The bulbasaur looked startled, and stepped infront of Davis as well. "What did I tell you? Now he's got my guy on his side." Chris Maxwell chuckled, sweeping some hair out of his face before offering his hand to Davis. "Name is Chris. Haven't seen you around here before. New to Cerulean?" |

“Probably is a trap.” Davis shook his head at his Pokemon. “And I appreciate the advice, I really do, but I’m not sure why you’d be dispensing it. Are you part of the trap?” Chris shrugged. “You looked troubled, and its obvious your trapnich there was trying to tell you something. Would you rather I of just walked by?” “Probably safer for you. Probably be safer for me to just walk on by too.” Davis sighed softly. “Might as well approach it as if it’s a trap... though the old man’s always been reliable before.” He dropped to one knee, stroking his Trapinch’s head. Chris raised an eyebrow. “Safer for me? Why are you being all depressing like that? Are you just not good at meeting new people? Well, here’s a clue. People like deciding what’s safe, or unsafe, for themselves. Its not up for you to tell them otherwise.” He shook his head. Poor boy, this outlook on life is my fault... “Nevertheless, I can tell when I’m not welcome. Come on Bulba.” Chris turned to walk off, Bulba glanced at Trapinch looking apprehensive before scurrying after his master. “Wait...” Davis sighed. “You were trying to help me. I do appreciate that.” The shorter man turned on the spot, and grinned again. “Much better. Now that’s the way you make allies. A trap, you say? Where are you heading? Bulba and I will help you out.” The bulbasaur jumped happily, which was quite a feat since bulbasaurs aren’t known for their jumping. “Sun Stone Cafe, to ask a man named Martin about some... well, some criminals. Criminals I’m trying to learn more about.” Davis offered Chris a tentative smile. “Keith Davis.” “Pleasure. Now, Davis. . .”Chris shook his head slightly. “Why is a kid, no offense but you’re what, fifteen? Sixteen? Looking around for criminals? Why aren’t you out searching for the next big thing? Catching new ‘mons? Challenging gym leaders?” A pretty girl passed by, and Chris glanced at her before nudging Davis. “Heck, why are you going after criminals rather than chasing pretty things like that?” Davis’s eyes followed the girl for a moment as well before he returned them to Chris. “Because, as far as I can tell, no one else is. And because they killed my mother.” Davis sighed. “A long time ago. I’d really like to catch Pokemon or challenge Gyms or chase girls... Arceus knows I would.” Chris sighed. So this is the extent of my father’s damage? I have much repairing to do. “A couple of things. Did it ever occur to you, that perhaps your short sightedness has kept you from seeing others pursuing justice? Because anyone who kills anyone’s mother certainly deserves justice! You just can’t let your rage, your anger, be all there is to you. Live your life. Live it well. Or else they would of won.” His smile faded momentarily, and a far off look appeared in his eyes. “That’s neither here nor there at the moment. Lets deal with this trap, than we can search for pretty girls.” “One moment, it seems you’re trying to talk me out of pursuing them at all, and the next, you’re saying it’s time to go after them. But neither of those is your goal, is it?” Davis tilted his head, scratching Trapinch under the chin before rising to his feet. “Caught on, have you? No, I can’t say either is my goal. I am simply trying to get you to stop being so short sighted. You’re not the only one to have a tragic past. Its a terrible thing that so many people do. I just hate seeing it consume the person.” Chris chuckled. “And honestly, half the time I’m not sure of what I’m saying. Just saying what feels right, you know? Maybe this is better. Protect yourself, move forward, but take off the blinders and see the world for its brightness too.” “Maybe I do need you around... I tend to overanalyze everything I think and do.” Davis smiled to Chris. “So... willing to risk your life with a kid you just met? Let’s go.” “I’ve done worse things.” Chris said with a chuckle. Things that are unforgivable. Still, I would like to think I would still lend my aide, regardless of the past. “So how do you want to handle this? Go in swinging or walk in like you don’t know its a trap, and hope to get the upperhand?” “I think the second. If we can turn a trap for me into a trap for them... well, then they’ll be trapped. They won’t expect me to have backup.” Davis smiled at a thought. “I keep Trapinch’s Pokeball with me, so they think he’s in it, while he stays with you. You go into the cafe a few minutes before me, order some food, sit and eat like you don’t have a care in the world. Then I come in, trap springs, and you, Bulbasaur, and Trapinch get me out of it. That sound about right?” “I’m good at acting as if I don’t have a care in the world. Solid plan.” Chris nodded, grinning. “And I have been dying for their potstickers. Really sticks to the ribs, you know? So see you in a bit?” “See you.” Davis knelt. “Trapinch... you go with Chris, and I’ll see you again soon.” The Pokemon nudged Davis’s hand with its huge jaws, making a plaintive sound, then waddled off after Bulbasaur. Chris walked off, Bulbasaur and Trapinch at his heels. Before entering the restaurant he knelt down before Trapinch looking contemplative. “You’ve been taking good care of him, haven’t you boy? Don’t worry, you have some help now. However. . “ He scanned around, than found a ribbon discarded on the ground. “If we want it to be believable that you are mine, and not Davis’ perhaps we should change you to a she. . Just for the moment.” Chris grinned as he tied the ribbon into a bow and placed it on Trapinch’s head. Bulbasaur suppressed a laugh and attempted to look supportive. “That ought to do it.” Chris stood, pleased with himself. Than he took a step into the restaurant. “Marta! Potstickers please! Is my favorite table waiting?” A doe-eyed waitress of about seventeen smiled at Chris and nodded enthusiastically. “O’ course. Right over there.” She flashed him a smile than disappeared into the kitchen. A few moments later, Davis entered, and was immediately approached by a middle-aged man, who invited him to sit. The two of them spoke quietly for a few moments before Chris became aware of a glint of metal under the table - a gun or knife, most likely. Whatever it was, Davis was obviously aware of it too, and when the man gestured with his free hand toward the door Davis rose to his feet and walked out, the man following closely. “Man, how blatantly obvious.” Chris muttered to himself, shaking his head slightly as he pulled out his wallet. At least I know my father isn’t involved. Teraptus either. He would of solved the problem with force. And guns. My father would of had a complicated scheme. Leaves Vegita than. After dropping enough cash to cover the food and leave a rather generous tip, Chris stood and left the cafe, Trapinch and Bulbasaur at his heels. He followed Davis and the other man into an alley, making sure to stay in the shadows and waiting for the right time to strike. Once they were deep in the alley, the man turned, revealing the item for what it was - a wicked knife. Two other men stepped out of side routes, closing Davis in between them, and each released a Pokemon - a Sandshrew and a Bellsprout. Davis sighed. “So... am I getting roughed up or killed?” The man smirked. “You’ve been prying too deep, Mr. Davis, and you know too much. But, at the same time, you’re valuable to us... so we’re bringing you back. You’ll rot in a cell.” “No, not really planning on going without a fight... and if I’m valuable, you’re not going to use that knife.” Davis rushed toward the man. “Bulba, Sleep powder.” Chris’s strong voice came from behind Davis, startling the other men. The grass pokemon jumped forward, releasing its sleep spores onto the Sandshrew. “Trap, I know you don’t need to listen to me, but take care of that bellsprout, will ya?” Meanwhile, Chris jumped up onto his feet and planted his fist in one of the other men’s teeth. “Trap!” Trapinch rushed forward, diving past a Vine Whip attack to bite the Bellsprout hard. The Bellsprout managed to whip free of Trapinch’s grip, and its trainer called out, “Wrap!” Bellsprout tangled itself around Trapinch’s jaw, squeezing there for a long moment as Davis simply punched the man with the knife, knocking him to the ground and sending the knife skittering toward Chris. Chris quickly knelt down, and grabbed the knife. He than turned towards the other man, holding the knife like a madman who knew how to wield a blade. “Had enough yet? If I were you I’d gather my things and give this up as a lost cause.” The trainer nearest Chris stepped back, pointing toward Chris and starting to yell a command before Trapinch grabbed Bellsprout again, biting down hard with its Bug Bite attack. Bellsprout shook in Trapinch’s jaw a moment before falling still, and Trapinch tossed it toward its trainer. The leader of the thugs pushed himself backward on the ground, looking between Davis and Chris before muttering, “They didn’t pay me enough for this... men, let’s go!” The two trainers recalled their Pokemon, fleeing, and the leader pushed himself to his feet, running as well. Davis dropped to one knee, lifting an object left behind in his hand. “Phone. He left his phone...” He paused a moment before grinning widely. “His phone that’s probably full of about a dozen useful bits of information.” “That old man did give you some useful information than, didn’t he?” Chris said grinning, tucking the knife into his boot. “Look at the numbers. That way we can see if its a personal phone or a business one.” Davis flipped the phone open. “No lock code, either... these guys must be nowhere near the top of their bunch, or the top of the class. Alexander, Frederick, Ilov... these are all first names. Not a lot of help there. Tabbien... I seem to remember seeing that in the newspaper recently.” Alexander Vegita, Fredrick McCullen, Ilov Teraptus. Though it surprises me that Ilov has the intelligence to use a phone, these are definitely Project contacts. Chris sighed, shaking his head slightly. “Tabbien. . Isn’t that the mental hospital? That was located just outside of down? Burnt down a few months past. Lots of death. Big scandal for the hospital board.” “If I was a criminal organization that specialized in kidnapping innocents for use in illegal experiments, where would I have friends? And, if I was done using those friends, what would I do with the place they worked in?” Davis pushed himself to his feet. “I think we have a lead.” “Rumors are its haunted. Not like that would stop us, but it might of kept others away.” Chris said, nodding thoughtfully. “Do we go now, or tomorrow ? I have a flat just on the outskirts of town. You and Trap are welcome to crash on my couch.” “I doubt anyone’s there... any clues we find would be bits of paperwork or data discs in the ashes. Still... I hate to put off until tomorrow what can be done today. We can at least do a quick look-over before nightfall, then get cleaned up, have some dinner, and meet girls. Sound good to you?” Davis smiled. “You sound like a motivational poster.” Chris chuckled. “Come on, its this way.” |

Remains of Tabbien Mental Hospital Dusk was rapidly approaching at Chris and Davis headed out to the abandoned hospital. They did not realize, however, that once they stepped onto the Hospital's grounds they were being watched by a pair of catlike, mismatched eyes. . . .Straaaaangeeers.. A spirit of a paranoid patient cried, echoing in Mio Hongo's head as she watched the two men. She did not bother to reply, she was to intent on watching the actual people. After watching them for a good ten minutes, Mio began to wonder if they were actually people, or were they deluded visions of a sick mind? Or spirits unable to rest? She crept after them as they walked through the corroded courtyard and into the cafeteria. Mio could smell their scents over the strong scent of burnt earth. This perplexed her. Spirits usually don't smell. And what was that? Her ears perked a little noticing Trapinch and Bulbasaur. Pokemon. . . That clinched it. They weren't spirits. They had to be real. But why were they here? No one ever comes here. There is nothing here. Nothing here but her and the drifloon who had decided to keep her company. And the spirits. There were a ton of spirits. So many spirits that it got annoying sometimes just listening to them moaning and complaining about their lives. Mio knew her life was sub-par, but at least she didn't whine. . . . Keith. . . My boy. . . One of the usually quieter spirits sobbed, moving up next to Mio and looking over at Davis and Chris. Your boy? That's your son? Mio asked turning her head from the spirit towards Davis. She inched a little further forward on the crumbling ledge she had been perched on, trying to get a better view. The other one, not Davis, glanced up towards Mio's perch and she ducked quickly out of sight. |

"Is something there?" Davis glanced up toward where Chris was looking. "I don’t see anything... did you?” “I think I did. I definitely thought I saw movement. And its not windy today. Though it could just of been a pokemon. Like Gastly or something. Actually, I’m surprised I haven’t seen many ‘Mons here. Usually ghost types gather at places like these.” He frowned. The absence of ghost types did not bode well. Was the tragedy here so bad, it even kept them away? “That would take something worse than a fire... even a fire with as many casualties as this one had.” Davis started working his way carefully over a pile of rubble. “Something that upset the spirits of a place enough that even the company of Pokemon couldn’t properly placate them.” Chris shivered. “This place is giving me the willies. Nevertheless, I think we can get to that landing through that hall there.” He pointed down a dark hall where steps were barely visible at the end. “Sounds good.” Davis started to climb down the rubble pile, lifting an arm to wipe ash from his face but only succeeding in smearing more on. “Careful... sharp end of something here.” “I think that’s called a knife.” Chris said smirking. “Or what’s left of one. Though, rather big knife to be in a hospital. Makes me wonder exactly what they were cutting. . .” His voice trailed off, and he looked suddenly pale. On the landing, Mio was still watching curiously. They’re coming! Fleeeeeeeeeee! the spirits cried and Mio ignored them. No one had ever found her here. No one had ever cared. Besides, they smelled good. “I’d... rather not think about it.” Davis trembled a bit at the thought, but continued on his way, waiting for Trapinch to scuttle around a ruined table. “Do you feel like you’re being watched? I feel like I’m being watched.” “I had been assuming that the feeling was coming from you not being able to take your eyes off of me cause I’m darn sexy.” Chris joked half heartedly. “But seriously, yes. And its creepy as hell.” “I’m not going to disagree with you other than to say you’re entirely not my type.” Davis dropped down off a pile of broken chairs. “That’s good. Because you wouldn’t of had a chance anyway, being the wrong gender for me and everything. “ Chris began to climb up the stairs, holding on desperately so as to not lose his balance. They talk about silly things. Mio thought, tilting her head to watch them, seeming unaware of how close they actually were. Davis paused as he reached the landing, blinking at a girl crouched between a pair of half melted file cabinets. Her eyes were the first things he noticed, the right blazing green, and the other violent violet and they both were lit up like lamps in the darkness. Than he noticed the mane of thick, tangled white hair that made it look like she was wearing a cotton hat. Mio was dressed in an oversized sweat shirt with a dirty pair of leggings underneath with no shoes. Her skin shimmered slightly in the low light as she just stared at Chris and Davis as they came onto the landing. “Uh. . Am I seeing things, or do you actually see that too?” Chris leaned over to Davis and whispered in his ear. A small, amused smile crept onto Mio’s lips. They smell even better up close. I wonder what they are looking at? Davis smiled to the girl softly, lowering his body a bit to be less threatening. “Hello there. Have you been here long?” She obviously has... there’s enough ash on her clothes that there’s no way she hasn’t been sleeping here. Is she a patient? Stuck here since the fire? Arceus, I can’t imagine that. I wonder who he’s talking too? Can he see spirits too? Mio tilted her head slightly. No dear, he’s looking at you... the matronly spirit said lovingly. Mio suddenly startled, moving back a centimeter or two, her eyes wide. M. . Me. . .? She gulped than reached out her hand. Are you sure? Is he real? She reached out and poked Davis’ nose. She than withdrew her hand, staring at it astonished, than looking over at Davis and letting out an amused giggle. “Patient.” Chris said, nodding knowingly. At least she doesn’t seem violent. Davis blinked, then laughed, reaching up to wipe the ash her finger left on his nose. “I’m Davis, and this is Chris. Could you tell me your name?” He glanced to Chris. Better to be happy to have found her than frightened for her... for her sake. If she sees us afraid, she’s more likely to be scared too. Mio tilted her head the other direction and than leaned forward, moving her face quite close to Davis’. “You . . .smell nice.” She said softly. “Mio thinks so.” Chris raised his eyebrow and suppressed a chuckle. He than took a step back in surprise as Mio suddenly stood up and did the same thing to him and taking a whiff of his neck. “You . . also.” She said, standing straight now, making it suddenly obvious she was much taller, and older than they would of originally thought. Chris’ face reddened with surprise and he sent Davis a pitiful glance. “How long have you been here, Mio?” Davis stood up fully, keeping his gaze on the girl but offering Chris a sympathetic smile. “And are you hungry?” “Food. This smell is food? You no smell nice, its the food?” Mio asks, staring at them both accusingly. “No, No, we do smell nice. Really, I promise. The food isn’t here. Its elsewhere.” Chris pleaded, trying to calm her. “Right, Davis?” “Right.” Davis smiled softly. “We smell nice entirely separately from the food. But if you’d like food, I have a bit, and can get you more.” If the Project figures out that they lost the phone, they could check the places in its listing. Can’t leave her here for them to find... not to mention that this isn’t a place suitable for human habitation anyway. A good meal and a place to sleep that isn’t covered in ash and death is the least that could be offered to her. “Seran.” Mio said suddenly, looking at Davis an entirely different way. “Information is in Seran. I can aide for. . food. And cake.” She spoke as if food and cake were entirely different things. Chris’ eyebrows shot up again. Seran? How does she know that city? How does she know we are looking for information? “Seran?” Chris asked, looking confused. Where I was born. Where everything started, at least as far as I know. Davis blinked at the girl as well. “I’m not offering the food as a trade... I’m offering it because I would like to give it to you. But how did you know we were looking for information... and about what?” Davis reached into his pouch, retrieving a long strip of jerkey, a bit of cheese, and two crackers to pass to Mio. “She told me.” Mio said vaguely, taking hold of the crackers, cheese and jerky. She sniffed them, than nodded approvingly. “These foods smell, but not like you.” “I’d hope not. The smell of cheese is appetizing, but not exactly my goal in the morning.” Davis smiled to the girl. She? “Who told you?” Mio looked at Davis, her cheeks full of crackers and jerky. She than pointed to a space behind both of the men. “She.” Davis looked behind him. “I don’t see anyone...” “She. . She no smell. Mio no know her name. You have she’s eyes.” Mio stated a matter of factly. Chris let out an audible gasp. She. . This girl! Davis glanced to Chris. “What is it?” “Didn’t you say. . they killed you mother?” Chris said, looking at Mio seriously now. “Perhaps she was what they were after? A way to communicate with those they have already tortured to death. Perhaps they were hoping the dead had looser tongues.” “Dead people no have tongues. Gets eaten.” Mio responded, sniffing around Davis for more food, sticking a hand in his backpack. “Here you go.” He passed her more food. “That could be, in which case... we have to go.” He looked to Mio. “Would you like to come with us?” “Cake. Is there cake in Seran?” Mio asked questioningly as she ate the food. “Cake, and perhaps a bath on the way.” Chris said to Mio, smiling warmly. He than looked to Davis. “We can’t leave her here. Or alone. Someone . . one of them. . might find her. She obviously doesn’t run from people. Would you want her poking one of the thug’s noses?” “We’ll stop at your place for the night... the sun’s about to go down. And I’ll pick up cake from the nearest bakery.” Davis offered Mio a hand. “Come with us? We’d enjoy your company.” Mio’s eyes brightened up. “Cake!” Suddenly there was movement behind them. “loooon?” A soft voice asked, causing Chris and Davis to turn around. Floating at head level was a drifloon, looking inquiringly at them. “Cake!” Mio said again, pushing between Chris and Davis and hugging the balloon pokemon. “Either she is really excited about getting cake, or that pokemon is named cake. Or both.” Chris couldn’t help but smile. Despite what she must of gone through, Mio still seemed to have a cheery personality. That thought alone warmed his heart. “Either way... let’s get out of here.” Davis offered Mio his hand. “Come along? There’s a whole world out there to see.” |

Chris's Apartment It was a small place, but clean. It had a small kitchen, a bathroom, and a large living area with the sleeping area blocked off by a curtain. His furniture was simple, yet comfortable and he had one potted plant on his coffee table. "The couch folds out. I'm going to let Mio take my bed, it looks like she needs it. I'll sleep in my easy chair, and you get the couch, Davis." Chris pointed towards the bathroom while looking at Mio. " there is soap, shampoo, and anything else you might need underneath the sink. Including toothbrushes. Davis." He turned back to the other man. "Can you search my closet for something clean to dress her in? My clothes will have to do until we can get her some of her own. I'm going to see what I can do about the cake and other food." He went to take a step towards the kitchen but was stopped by bulbasaur. "Saur!" "Oh, right. There's a small yard through that door, if the 'mons would rather be outside. Space can get kind of tight in here with so may people." |

"Inch!" Trapinch leapt to its feet, following Bulba out with a playfully waddling gait. Davis pushed through the curtain to the sleeping area, gesturing for Mio to follow if she wished. "Something to wear... something to wear. Ah!" He produced a pair of shorts and a button-down shirt. Should be able to get these to stay on, at least... Chris is a good bit bigger than Mio. Come to think of it, how does he fit in these shorts anyway? "These should do for going on with. What do you think?" He offered her the items with a small smile. |

Mio took the clothes and looked at them curiously. "They smell like lilacs." She said simply before heading into the bathroom. A few moments later she was soaking in a tub full of bubbles. It's all right honey, the doctor's are just going to help you. Her mother's sweet voice said as a three year old Mio looked at her for aide as two white coats seized her by the arms. Momma! I dont wanna go! I fine! The little girl pleaded, tears streaming down her cheeks. Honey, I don't think this is a good idea. . . Her father started to say as Mio clamped onto his leg. Maybe you're right. . The mother responded, tears in her eyes as well. She knelt down and opened her arms to Mio. We'll find . . Her sentence was cut off as one of the white coats bashed her in the face. Momma! Kyoko! The father said enraged, kneeling down to protect his wife while staring at the white coats. What the hell was that for?! You have a contract, Mr. Hongo. We are taking Mio with us. The whitecoat cruelly replied, seizing the little girl by the waist and tearing her away from her father as she screamed. The other whitecoat moved to seize Mr. Hongo. No, don't take her. We didn't know it would be like this. We'll pay anything. . anything!Mr. Hongo pleaded, reaching out for his little girl as she got pulled farther and farther away. Too late Mr. Hongo. You'll receive a check in the mail to compensate for the damages to your wife, and rest at ease that you will never have to worry about this problem child again. No. . No. . Mio. . The scene faded to black, and Mio suddenly opened her eyes, staring around startled to find herself neck deep in bubbles. Oh, just a dream. . She thought with a sigh. Her parents had tried to take it back. They wanted her to have help. Mio had to believe they didn't want this for her. But Mio hadn't thought about them for years. Maybe her proximity to people who were trying to help sparked that memory to resurface. Immediately she drained the tub, got out, dried off and dressed. She took the brush off the table and worked out the kinks of her hair. By the time she left the bathroom she looked like a totally different person. Well, perhaps not totally different, but clean. ". . . D. . Davis?" She asked, looking straight at the man as he helped Chris put the food on the coffee table. "Ch. . Chris? . . After Seran. . can we go to Vermillion City? I. . .I want to see my parents. . ." |

Chris almost dropped the bowl of macaroni and cheese on the floor when he saw Mio come out of the bathroom. She looked a lot different cleaned up. Her hair looked nice and fluffy, her complexion was pale and almost shone. Much better than the ashen complexion the fire had given her. And there is just something about seeing a girl in one of your shirts that makes you think about her totally differently. He looked away before her eyes could meet his, and to hide his now red cheeks from Davis. A moment later he looked back at her, placed the food on the table and walked over to her taking one of her hands. "Of course we can go to Vermillion." He said with a genuine smile. "I'm sure Davis agrees." Mio's face brightened with a huge smile and she threw her arms around Chris' neck. "Oh thank you!" She said excitedly before breaking free and running to Davis and doing the same. "Thank you too!" "Uh. . Ah. . No problem." Chris coughed slightly, turning away again. Man, what's wrong with me? "The cake is still in the oven. . You guys start on this and I'll be back with dessert. . " He said quickly before slipping into the kitchen. Once inside and out of view, he leaned against the wall and hit himself on the head. Idiot. Idiot. Stay focused now. Keep to the mission. Don't let your heart get in the way. Its not. I was just surprised. Honestly, who wouldn't be at the drastic difference. Its no big deal. Seriously. He argued with himself. |

Davis blushed at the hug. She's cute. I really shouldn't be noticing that right now, given the circumstances, but she is. He returned it for a moment before releasing her. "While Chris is out getting dessert, would you like to talk a bit? Just... anything at all, really." He offered her a smile, trying to fight the blush down off his face. The earnestness of her expression... that's what seals it. I'm going to see that smile every time I close my eyes for a week... |

As Chris pushed open the door to the bakery, the older woman behind the counter looked up. "Hello, and welcome to Mickel's Bakery! I'm sorry, but you'll have to wait a bit if you want anything but chocolate chocolate white chocolate chip cookies... an old man and his sixteen grandchildren just came through and bought up pretty much everything we had in stock. There are cakes and cupcakes and cookies in the ovens, though." "Thankfully, Mrs. Mickel here is good company." The girl who was standing at the counter turned around, pushing her rimless glasses up on her nose, bringing her green eyes into focus and offering Chris a rather stunning smile. "She was just telling me about her wedding, which was apparently quite a remarkable affair. Care to hang about a bit while they get the sweets baked?" Chris gave the girl a stunning smile in return. "Of course. I wouldn't think of any other bakery to get my cakes. I hear they are worth the wait." He said charmingly. "My name's Chris" he offered out his hand. "Felice. Felice Girard... I'm in town for the swim meet. It's good to meet you." Felice shook Chris's hand firmly. "Swim meet? Ah! You're still in school than?" Chris asked sounding a little surprised. "Mostly distance classes, between swimming and Pokemon training, but officially yes, I am." Felice shrugged. "I get that question a lot... I guess I look older than I am. The exercise and the glasses do it, I think." "Your posture mostly. Most kids these days slouch. You carry yourself well." Chris shrugged. "So where are you from?" "Nimbasa, in Unova. Proud representative of Nimbasa Municipal School, honor student, star swimmer." Felice grinned. "Your accent has you as a native of Kanto, but I can't place it more specifically than that." "Vermilion." He said automatically, lying through his teeth. "That's where I'm going next, actually... leaving for there tomorrow, unless I find a group heading there on a different day that I can go with. I had to give up my seat on the bus; there was an older lady who needed to get home to her husband more than I needed to avoid a walking trip. Are there any sights I should see while I'm there?" "The Port. The beautiful cruise ships. ." Chris looked thoughtful for a moment. "And the Lieutenant's hair, its a wonder of this region!" He grinned, gesturing with his hands to emulate the awesomeness of the hair. "I'll definitely have to check out the ships. I hear that you can't reliably see Lieutenant Surge unless you're planning to challenge his Gym, though, and I don't think I could put Mudkip through that. He's not exactly fond of fighting Electric-types..." Felice shrugged, her sleeveless blouse showing off her well-toned shoulders. "I do want to see the ships. I love the ocean." "You are a swimmer after all. Vermilion is a great place for swimmers." "They're hosting the World Championship there next year... this year it's in Mossdeep. I don't think I'm going to make it there this year; Hoenn's a bit far, even for the Championship." Felice smiled. "Next year, though..." Chris thought for a moment. "You could catch yourself a geodude or a Grass type on the way. Don't they have sponsorships for competitions? Maybe you can get a company to sponsor your trip to Mossdeep?" "That's not a bad idea. I'll look around for someone who could do that. Thanks." Felice offered a dazzling smile. Chris seemed impervious to the dazzling smile. But he smiled in return. "Try big businesses." He went quiet for a moment, as if considering something. He than turned his gaze to the proprietor. "How long on those cakes? I was hoping for a red velvet?" He looked at Felice, smiling radiantly. "I have a few friends over at my place. Want to come over for some cake?" interaction with another female might do Mio some good. "About six more minutes, and we've got a red velvet in the oven now." Mrs. Mickel offered Chris a small smile. "Inviting me to your place already?" Felice grinned. "I'd love to. How many people will be there?" "Two others besides me and you. My friend Davis, and a cousin of his. She is kind of shy around people, so I thought another female around might help calm her. "Chris winked. "I wouldn't of invited if it would just be the two of us. I'm not that type of guy. . . At least not in the same day of meeting you." He shrugged. "I didn't expect you were that type of guy. It sounds fun, though... I'm up for it." Felice smiled. "I'll look forward to meeting your friends, and to getting to know you." "Ah, well, I bet they will be delighted to see you." He smiled. though davis might be a bit surprised to find out he has a cousin. . "I hope so." Felice winked. "And the cake is done." Mrs. Mickel poked her head in from the kitchen. "It came out quite nicely, if I do say so myself." Chris stood up. "Great. How much?" "Sixty." Mrs. Mickel smiled. "We usually charge eighty, but I decided to offer a discount for the wait." Chris pulled his wallet out of his pocket and handed her eighty dollars. "Keep the other twenty as a gift" he looked back at Felice. "You're probably here with your school? Do you have to check in and tell them where you are going?" "They've already headed off on the bus. I should call the coach at some point tonight, but it doesn't have to be right now." Chris nodded. "You should probably do that. You can use the phone at my place." He picked the cake up off the counter and looked at Felice. "Ready? Its not far. What were you waiting here for?" Felice walked to the counter and paid for a small package of raspberry chocolate chip cookies. "These. I'm ready now." The two walk back to Chris's place, idly chatting on the way about incidental things. When they arrived at the flat, Chris unlocked the door and slowly opened it. "Davis? I've got company and cake. Hope you and your cousin are hungry." "Famished." Davis raised an eyebrow in subtle question as Chris came in, but by the time Felice looked at him his expression was one of simple, pleasant greeting. Cousin? Why cousin? Chris merely shrugged slightly when he caught Davis's eye. Mio hid behind Davis, peeking out from behind him eyeing the cake, Chris, and Felice in turn. "Davis, Mio, this is Felice. I met her at the bakery. Felice. Davis and Mio." Chris said introducing them. "Keith Davis, good to meet you." Davis smiled, remaining where he was to let Mio retain her hiding spot and reaching back to offer her hand a light, reassuring touch. "Felice Girard. It's nice to meet both of you." Felice gave Mio a curious look. "You smell like raspberries." Mio stated simply. Chris suppressed a chuckled before stating "Felice is heading to Vermilion tomorrow. Her bus left her behind so she'll be walking. I thought she would enjoy some cake before leaving." Chris set the cake down on the coffee table and began to cut out slices. "Cake is a good way to start a journey." Davis smiled, contemplatively, then looked to Chris. "We don't have to leave Route 5 for our business until we get to the Underground Path. If everyone's okay with it, she could accompany us that far, then take the Path to Vermillion while we finish our plans." Chris looked at Davis with a slight shocked look on his face. This wasn't what he had planned but he was too polite to back out. "If that's all right with her." Mio crept out from behind Davis than dashed behind Chris while swiping a piece of cake. "She no come to Seran?" Felice looked between Davis and Chris for a moment. There's something going on there I don't know about. Then she blinked at Mio's words. "Seran? You're going to Seran? I have time, and I'd love to see the ruins. I'd imagine there are fascinating things and Pokemon there." Chris sighed, shaking his head. "No. I can't let you. Its dangerous. We are going because we have to. Not for some frivolous trip." Felice considered that. "I can take care of myself. Nimbasa's not exactly the safest part of the City-State, you know. But I can also help take care of other people. If you don't want me along because there's something you don't want me to see or because you just don't want my company that far, that's fine, but don't expect that I'm helpless. And, if you need help, let me come." Chris looked at Davis, a dark look in his eyes. "We will part ways at the underground path." He stated bluntly than took a bite out of his cake. "Fine." Felice gave a quiet huff then took a bite of her cake as well. What did I do? I didn't expect Mio to bring up Seran, and having her along as far as the Path would help keep both her and us safer. Davis shook his head, biting into his own cake then offering Mio a small smile to help clear some of the tension from the room. |

A bit later, while Davis and Mio sat against the base of the sofa and talked quietly and sleepily, Felice made her way to Chris. "You don't want me to go with you to Seran, which means one of two things. Either you don't like me, or you do like me and what you're doing there is going to be very, very dangerous. I'm not sure which of those ideas I like less, but my preferences aren't really what I'm worried about right now." She presented him the last slice of cake. "If it's too dangerous for me, how is it not too dangerous for either of those two? Davis seems like the sort of person who'd respond to danger by running straight at it instead of away from it, and Mio... I'm not sure how to put this. I expect she could take care of herself if she tried, but... I'm not sure she would try? Something of the sort." |

Chris took the piece of cake, looking at Felice seriously. "They are coming because they are already involved. You are not, because I refuse to get anyone else involved. I am done ruining lives, I do not want to add another one to the list." He looked over at Davis and Mio, watching Mio copying the way Davis ate his cake. "Those two. . I am trying to fix what is wrong with their lives. Hopefully this trip will shed some light on my future actions. That is what I hope for." He said quietly, not even touching the slice of cake Felice brought him. "Bringing you here was a bad idea it seems. I just thought they could use some pleasant company. Someone to remind them that life isn't always what they have been experiencing up to this moment." Chris chuckled kind of sadly. "We should meet up in Vermillion. We can show you the town. I can get you in to see the Lieutenant's hair." |

"In that case, you'd better finish whatever you're doing in Seran safely." Felice pulled a flask of water from her belt and took a long drink. "Because if you don't, you won't be able to show me around Vermillion, and you don't seem like the sort to break promises. I'll leave the question of what you're doing in Seran be, and part company with the three of you at the Underground Path." |
