Leigh, I love the idea of doing a parts of speech review, and providing parts of speech for students to introduce themselves to the class. What an awesome way for them to apply and practice a skill that they have learned in class. |

Hello, all! My name is Kari Wood and I'm a 4th grade ELA/Reading/Social Studies teacher at Wolftever Creek Elementary. This is my 3rd year teaching. I have 2 students in my class who currently receive ESL services, 1 student I'm attempting to have pulled in, and 4 students that exited the program last year. I love, love, love teaching EL's an am really excited about my class this year. I really liked the article that talked about preparing your classroom environment to be as welcoming for ELs as possible (Back to School Checklist). For a couple of my EL's, this was their first or second year in the US, and for a couple it was their first year in this school, so I wanted it to be a positive first impression for them and somewhere they felt comfortable. However, this school year, I couldn't work in my room over the summer. Our building is under construction and we all had to wait until the first day of in-service to even go into our rooms. This article really helped, because even though I was short on time, I had a solid list of what my priorities in regard to setting up my room for my students. Almost all of the things the article mentioned applied to ALL students, and even though I had already intended to do some of them, it gave me a really excellent guide as to what the most important to-do's were. David, I love the idea of mispronouncing names in order to teach empathy. My full name (Karilena) has given me grief my whole life and when teachers couldn't or wouldn't say it correctly, I lost a little respect for them and cared less about their classes. For this reason, it's important to me, too, to correctly pronounce students' names. I love the creative way you approached this with your students. (Also, congrats on your new job! hope you're loving it!) |

Hey ya'll! My name is Brittany Owens and I teach 3rd grade at Lookout Valley Elementary. This will be my 9th year teaching and I love it more and more each year. I have one EL student this year. I really liked the article about creating a welcoming environment. It really made me think about the small things that can make such a big difference to an EL. One thing that has really helped so far is using a translator app. During open house, our students were assigned a scrapbooking project. The project requires the student to create a page about themselves. Some students have opted to use pics, cut out things they like, and show off their artistic ability. The pages will be compiled into a class book. Kari, I love how excited and determined you seem about teaching!
