Items 3x Pokeball 1x Moon Ball 1x Lure Ball 2x Rare Candy ET: 5 Amy and Quell broke away from the others and sprang up the white marble steps to the beautiful Marei Library. She gathered up her long red hair and held it to the back of her head while she read the notice pinned to the huge -- and closed -- double doors that led to their prize.
”The Marei-Kuree Library is closed due to unforeseen circumstances. Thank you for your patience while we resolve this matter.”
Underneath that, on the same notepaper, was scrawled ‘SERIOUSLY!!! DON’T ENTER.’
Amy turned back to her partner with quirked eyebrows. "It’s closed," she said simply. "You keep watch."
Sauce wordlessly shrugged, turned around towards the street and casually leaned against the wall. Keeping an eye out for other passersby while Amy went to work. The street was mostly unoccupied, and the few people he did see were paying more attention to the shop windows than anything else.
She pretended to scratch her head, easily slipping a bobby pin from her hair into her hand, and pretended to read the notice more closely, letting her hand trace the ornate golden lock. Wondering if it was going to be particularly hard to pick, as it was such well-known landmark, she slid the pin into the keyhole and felt around with deft and subtle finger movements that would make any heterosexual man jealous.
Quickly, with well-practised and deliberate motions, she found the tumblers and pressed upwards in quick succession, feeling the lock yield to her with every new click, as well as that surge of satisfaction of actually doing something right.
Her other hand casually rested on the handle and turned while she squinted at the notice, and the huge door swung open a crack. She pulled her hand away and swept the pin back into her hair, turning around to face Yorick. A passerby wouldn’t be able to tell that the door was ajar, but Sauce would know she had succeeded. Silently she beamed.
Yorick glanced over from the corner of his eye and saw Amy smiling to him. He grinned back and gave a curt nod. Signalling he was ready to move in.
As casually as she could, Amy returned Quell to her pokeball, surprised by the sudden vulnerability she felt without her pokemon partner. But they needed to be as careful and quiet as possible if they were breaking and entering.
When there was a moment of complete stillness in their immediate surroundings, Amy pushed the door open further and slipped inside. Into the darkness. Yorick followed immediately thereafter, smoothly rolling into the doorway from the wall. He moved silently into the library before a loud thump resounded as he tripped and fell over the doorframe. Yorick winced at the sound he just had made and clambered forward behind a bookshelf with Amy.
Amy straightened up from her stealthy crouch and clapped her hands over her mouth. "Yorick!" she hissed. "Are you alright?"
"Y-yeah," he whispered back, collecting his sunglasses from the floor and ignoring the throbbing of his knees "Do you think anyone heard?" He coolly placed his glasses into his pocket and glanced around.
Amy grimaced at the sound of his voice -- he was probably a little embarrassed. "I don’t think there’s anyone here," she whispered. "Maybe we should get Ersatz to case the joint? If we’re spotted we’ll probably be hauled to the police station."
"Yeah, sure," he agreed readily, still blushing from his mishap. He reached to his belt, found Ersatz pokeball and popped it open with a flash of light. The purple jelly pokemon appeared and silently stared at him. It blinked its blank eyes questioningly.
Sauce paused for a moment, what was Ersatz supposed to do? "Ersatz, we need you to check out this room for us. Let us know if anyone is around?"
The ditto wiggled its “arms” happily before starting to slide into the center of the room.
"PSSTT," Yorick hissed and snapped his fingers, "Be stealthy!"
Ersatz smiled back to him and wiggled again. Its form shrunk a little bit as it squirmed its way towards the wall. Yorick held his breath for a moment before releasing it slowly. If they didn’t get themselves caught, it’d be a miracle.

Ersatz squished its malleable body against the wall and slide across the room. As it moved further down the room, it recognized a dim light glowing somewhere in the distance and decided to head in that direction. As it neared it began to hear murmuring voices. Ersatz headed straight for the sound before pausing for a moment. Yorick had said “stealthy” right? It pondered the meaning of stealthy for a moment beady eyes staring around the room before deciding on a plan.
Ersatz transformed itself into the one thing it saw plenty of; books. The ditto shifted into a large purple book before continuing it’s stealthy mission forward towards the voices. Hopping along with a loud THUMP.
"Yeah, that new director said to close down the entire library until we get the problems in that wing taken care of."
THUMP.
"Don’t you think that’s a little much?" THUMP. “How are we even supposed to handle something like this ourselves?"
THUMP-THUMP-THUMP.
"Honestly it seems like something we should call the Rangers for."
THUMP. THUMP.
"Yeah, it’s not like it would be a long trip for them to just show up and check it o-- What is that??"
THUMP.
"You hear that right? Is someone throwing books from the shelves?"
"I hadn’t heard anything? Are you sure it’s not just your imagination? Maybe you’re just spooked."
THUMP-THUMP.
" No I definitely hear something, you aren’t hearing it?"
"Yeah, actually I think I did this time."
"C-come with me to check it out. I’m not going alone."
THUMP.
"I don’t know why you’re so scared, geez"
THUMP-THUMP.
"Shut up and just come with me!"
THUMP.
"Is.. Is it getting louder?" "Listen, we just have to take a quick glance, okay?"
There was a huff from down the hallway followed by two sets of footsteps. They were coming closer! Ersatz wondered if it should hide? No, it was perfectly camouflaged already. Ersatz felt pretty confident that the humans wouldn’t notice a big purple book in the middle of the floor. After all, the building was full of books!
Two beams of light flashed through the room as the humans approached. Their flashlights surveyed the area, slowly travelling down each aisle and every shelf. Of course, there was nothing else to be found. Then, one beam stopped and rested on the Ditto-book. Ersatz froze, inanimate, on the ground.
"Weird."
"Hmm?"
"Well, what’s this book doing in the middle of the walkway like that? It wasn’t there when we opened up this morning."
"We probably just missed it"
"Maybe… Or maybe the problems in the East Wing are spreading?"
"Ugh.. That’s just what we need. Should we just tell the director and see what he wants us to do about it?"
"Tell the director what?" A silky smooth voice joined the conversation as a kindly-faced older gentleman in brown tweed appeared as if from nowhere in Ersatz’s field of vision.
"God! You scared me, sir!"
"Uhh… It’s probably nothing, sir. It’s just this book."
The woman walked over and picked Ersatz up off the ground. Waving it through the air. Ersatz felt as though it might be sick.
"We think something might have knocked it down in here?"
The Ditto struggled not to quiver as it was passed from one human to the next.
"It’s just strange because we thought the, uh, problems were only in the East Wing."
"We’re totally handling it, though. Nothing to worry about in here."
"Hm." The old man stared at his two employees over thin-framed glasses. "You can’t tell that this book is a Ditto, eh?"
The first woman chuckled for a moment before realizing the Director hadn’t been joking.
"A Ditto?!" The other, younger woman recoiled back as if attacked by something particularly sticky.
The jig was up! How had they seen through its perfect disguise? Ersatz froze. The humans must be bluffing! He tried making himself even bookier.
"Well, uh, what do we do with it?"
"Are you sure it’s a Ditto?" the woman asked. "It looks pretty booky to me."
Ersatz swelled with pride.
"Well, why don’t we just open it up and find out?" the Director said bluntly, clearly not amused by being questioned.
Ersatz panicked. It may have looked like a book, but it didn’t know how to write any human words. He’d just matched the shapes on the covers!
The Ditto popped back into its normal form and tried to escape the man’s grasp, shooting upwards from his fist like slippery soap in a shower and squirming desperately across the tile floor. There was nothing much else on its mind at that moment but returning to his trainer, and maybe taking a long rest in its pokeball.
That sounded so nice!
The stealthy plan had failed, and it didn’t occur to Ersatz that there might have been other facets to it -- such as not leading people right back to Yorick. It skidded across the linoleum of the entrance with a look of sheepish apology at the two partially hidden humans who had been straining their ears, trying to hear whatever was going on.
"There!" the woman yelled, jogging after it and looking left and right for the pink blob, her features twisted into an expression of confusion and irritation in equal parts. And then, suddenly, her gaze landed on Yorick and Amy and she gasped and took three rapid steps backwards. "What are you doing in here? No, that’s … never mind … you can’t be in here at all. Melanie! Sound the alarm!" Dramatically she put her hands on her hips and tilted her chin upwards. "We have a couple of lovebirds! here for some secret canoodling!"
"Hey!" Amy spoke up, getting to her feet and mirroring the woman’s power pose. "If we were canoodling, we’d bloody well do it in public!" She turned to Yorick and whispered, "what’s canoodling?"
Yorick wasn’t sure now was the time to explain. Instead, he scooped up Ersatz, grabbed Amy by the wrist and pulled her away towards an aisle lined by towering bookshelves. Just then, a hellish noise began to blare and Amy gritted her teeth and planted her free hand hard against one of her ears.
Section 1
(Alarms are now blaring!)
You managed to get indoors, but at what cost? There are alarms sounding inside, and if you're not quick enough, trouble may follow! Hopefully nothing will be disturbed by the sudden noises.
"What the hell is that?" she yelled, but she wasn’t sure he’d be able to hear a word over the noise.
"Some kind of alarm!" Yorick yelled over the klaxxon. This place was a national landmark after all, it made sense that they’d have some sort of anti-intrusion alarm system. Bright lights strobed from the walls. He clutched Amy’s wrist as he dragged her away from the woman, but soon he was hanging on behind Amy as she led him down the maze-like hallways. "We should probably be heading towards an exit!"
"Isn’t the exit in the opposite direction?" she yelled, barely able to hear him at all. She twisted around to look at him over her shoulder and slowed down a little to allow him to catch up.
He glanced around as they sped through the halls. "I.. I don’t know. I got all turned around now." The flashing lights and shrill sound had begun to give him a headache.
Amy paused at that and turned around, pressing the back of her hand to her forehead and regulating her breathing. "Well, yeah. Me too. This is really disorientating." She gestured wildly to indicate that she meant the sound, but the motion could equally have applied to the labyrinthine way the library seemed to have been constructed.
"Do you think they’re still chasing us?" Yorick said, glancing down the row of shelves they’d just come from.
"Well, they went through all that trouble of turning on this hellish and neverending alarm system so I think it’s safe to say they aren’t going to let us stay here if they can help it," she said, looking back over her shoulder but only seeing more books. For now.
Ersatz bleated a cry that sounded exactly like the alarm and both agents spun to see a slender and mildly frightened looking woman staring at them. Both groups stared frozen for a moment before the young woman reacted.
"Here! Brooke! I found them!"
Sauce shouted an expletive that could barely be heard over the sound of the alarm. Caught again! Would they ever make it out of this place? He glanced around for an exit sign. In a public building like this, there had to be some indicator which way was out. His eyes fixed on the glowing red letters and he took off in that direction, waving his arm for Amy to follow.
"No!" Amy hissed, slipping her fingers between his and yanking him back in the opposite direction just as Brooke, the first woman, emerged from around the corner. "In the confusion let’s get deeper into the building instead of back towards the exits."
They flew down the maze-like aisles, up a set of carpeted stairs and through a pair of heavy double doors, stacks of dusty tomes looming over them at every turn, and Brooke always a half-step ahead of them -- it was where she spent every day, after all.
"That alarm is going to drive me crazy," she whimpered, coming to a halt down a dead end and rubbing her eyes. "What do we do? I’m not … exactly at the top of my game here." She paused, craning her neck to look her partner in the eyes. "Yorick?"
Yorick stood in front of her, hesitant to come any closer. His eyes fixated on the bookshelf behind her. His whole body looked nearly paralyzed.
Yorick stammered, his tongue seemed numb in his mouth, raising a hand to point over her shoulder. "A spider."
"A what?" she whispered, eyes trained on the empty aisle they stood at the end of. She turned slowly towards him, frowning. "A what?"
"Spinarak!" he exclaimed, grabbing Amy by the shoulders and spinning her towards the bookshelf so that she was face to face with the small green bug type that had been sitting there quietly. "Get it! Take it out!" he urged, now using Amy as a makeshift shield. Despite his better sense, he just couldn’t get over his phobia of spider pokemon.
Amy giggled at how silly her partner was being, even when she realised he was being completely serious. Unable to shake the smile from her face, she reached for the first ball on her belt and tapped at the release button.
In a powerful burst of orange light, which hopefully didn’t call over any staff members that might have been nearby -- mobilised by the blaring alarms -- Quell appeared and swished her tail behind her, glancing left and right and immediately stepping back to block Amy’s path.
”Danger.”
Amy laughed again, turning around to glance in Yorick’s direction to see him standing behind her with his breath held. He clutched her shoulders in what felt like a death grip, growing tighter every passing second.
"Quell says there’s some danger. You think she means this teeny weeny little tiny bug?" she teased.
"Well yes, of course!" he snapped in retort.
The Spinarak, sensing he was being talked about, wiggled his mandibles and chattered wetly. Without further provocation, the face-like markings on the back of its abdomen shifted to create a frightening expression. Yorick took a stumbling step back as if he was the one being attacked
VS
"Huh, look, Yorick. That’s kinda cute, right? It’s attacking us." She raised her hand to giggle behind it. "It’s so tinyyy, what does it think it’s doing?"
"Well attack back then!" He squinted his eyes, visibly annoyed with the game.
She tilted her head back and laughed again at the quaver in his voice. "Alright, alright. Don’t panic!" She craned her neck to peek at his face. "Any … more than you are! Quell. You know what to do. Try not to make too much noise, though. Go for a Bite."
She thought it was the move of her Absol that would be the least … crashy?
The Absol had no real concept of ‘quiet’, despite the name she had been given, and to gain the height she needed to clamp her powerful jaws around the spider’s abdomen she jumped up onto the lower shelf and sprang off, sending books scattering everywhere and causing a cloud of dust to swirl high and fill the aisle. The Spinarak squealed horrifically at the sensation of the dark type move and launched a spiral of thick white string that tangled itself in the Absol’s legs, sending her crashing loudly ot the floor again.
Amy winced. "Quell," she hissed. "Be quiet!"
The Spinarak seized the short moments it took Quell to react to Amy’s words and pulled the enveloping strings tighter, crushing the Absol’s bones from the outside. It used the opportunity to skitter its way back up an adjacent bookshelf.
"Go for … use a ... Razor Wind! Cut the string." Amy looked around, rising to her tiptoes to check for any approaching figures but saw nothing -- yet. This attack wasn’t exactly going to be impossible to detect. Quell gritted her teeth, her muscles rippling underneath her shiny fur with exertion. She didn’t like being trapped. Possibly more than anything else.
A glimmer passed over her eyes and her face went slack with concentration as an ominous howling kicked up in the distance.
"It’s just a tiny bug, Quell," Amy reminded her. "Squash it!" She turned to look pointedly at Yorick too, but there was a twinkle in her eye.
Yorick smiled back sarcastically, trying to hide his now blushing face.
The scary face on the Spinarak’s back glowed a dark black, and Quell shivered at the pain of what seemed like a Night Shade, still trapped in her webby prison.
"Any time now, Quell," Amy said, raising her voice and realising that if her Absol was out of commission now, they might be in real trouble moving forward, depending on what was waiting for them whenever they got closer to finding this book…
Just then a violent gust of wind sliced invisibly through the constraints that drew ever tighter around Quell’s body and she jumped up, panting and glowering. With a toss of her bladed head, the winds zipped backwards and sliced up the spider as well. The Spinarak twitched and fell away from the bookshelf, and when it landed on the floor its legs curled tight above it. DEAD.
Yorick let out a long exhale. Tension immediately melted from his shoulders and his grip on Amy loosened.
"We did it!" Amy said, picking up Quell’s forelegs and wiggling her paws, much to the dark type’s obvious discomfort.
Quell VS Spinarak Spinarak used Scary Face. Quell and Yorick’s speed fell harshly! Quell used Bite Spinarak used String Shot! Quell’s speed fell! Spinarak used Constrict Quell used Razor Wind. A breeze picked up. Spinarak used Night Shade Quell unleashed Razor Wind. Spinarak died.
"Just what do you think you’re doing?!" the larger woman known as Brooke shouted from their rear. She stood panting, in a wide stance as if she was competing in a wrestling championship.
Amy instinctively stepped in front of Yorick at the sound of her voice, and Quell quickly caught her breath and stepped in front of Amy.
"Look at that Spinarak!" Melanie interrupted, thrusting her finger at the incapacitated bug-type and then pointing it to Quell. "You guys beat it?"
"W-what about it?" Amy demanded. "Was it like … one of your traps?"
"Do you think you can possibly help us?" she yelled, her face lighting up.
"What?!” Amy yelled over the blaring alarm. "Can you turn that thing off first?!”
"Oh!” Melanie practically jumped. For a librarian she seemed very comfortable with loud noises.
"I got it," Brook shouted, jogging out of sight. Ten seconds later the shrill sound of the alarms came to a deafening stop, though Sauce and Amy’s ears were left ringing for a while.
"Thank you!" Amy roared, making herself jump. She lowered her voice to an almost appropriate level. "What were you saying about Spinarak traps?"
"I’m not sure that’s wh--" Sauce started.
"No! That wasn’t a trap!" Melanie shook her head. "We’ve actually been having terrible problems in this wing all day! I was going to ask if maybe you folks could handle it?"
"Us?" Amy repeated, surprised.
"I’m not so sure that’s a good idea." Brooke walked back around the corner accompanied by a white-haired older man that Sauce now recognized from the restaurant. "This library is closed to the public right now. We can’t have private citizens turning this place into their own personal gym."
Amy glanced over to Yorick; she couldn’t help but feel a little annoyed. "We’re being told off for helping before we even agreed to."
"We’d like to get this place up and running again as soon as possible!" Yorick pleaded. He elbowed Amy in the ribs subtly. Having free reign in the library was all they needed to decode the message.
A vein in the old man’s forehead twitched. "What concern is it of yours?"
"Well… we’re, uhh… patrons of the arts. We came all the way from Tectana to experience this place!"
The director seemed thoroughly unconvinced, and opened his mouth to respond before being interrupted again.
"Pleeeaaase, sir! Brooke and I aren’t pokemon trainers. We’re in way over our heads here!" They could hear the very definite note of panic in the woman’s voice and Amy tried to communicate telepathically with Yorick -- what exactly was going on here?
Brooke nodded her head in agreement.
The director frowned and eyed Yorick and Amy suspiciously. "I suppose I shouldn’t refuse help when it is so readily given."
"I don’t remember offering anything!" Amy wailed. "What do you want us to do?"
"Don’t worry, Amy," Yorick said happily. "Whatever it is, as pokemon trainers we should be willing to help! Especially if it lets us see the library."
"But we have--" she began, and then his meaning occurred to her. "Ohh, right! Yeah. We’re trainers. We have to help out whenever we can. That’s the, uh, the trainer code! Right?"
"We just need help with a bug infestation like the one you just beat! It should be easy for you!" Melanie chimed cheerfully and a chill ran back up Yorick’s spine.
Amy couldn’t stifle her snigger quick enough, glancing sidelong at her partner’s pale face. "Oh, is that it? Just some measly old tiny little sweet little bugs? Isn’t that gonna be easy, huh?" She nudged Yorick a couple of times. "With their cute little clicking mandibles and glassy, voidlike eyeballs? Is that all?"
Yorick grimaced back at her, trying to fake a smile. He suddenly felt very ill.
"If you want to try cleaning this place up by yourselves then be my guest, but you will be by yourselves! I’m not going to have my workers waste their valuable time and resources by trying to help you out."
Brooke and Melanie exchanged skeptical glances but were suddenly silenced by their boss’s stare.
"Yes, Mr. Director, sir!"
"Yes, sir!"
"To the bugs!" Amy announced, pulling a distressed Yorick along behind her.

"So…” Amy began, cutting through the awkward quiet. "Bugs, huh? What’s the deal with that?"
"Are you talking about me, or the library?" Sauce asked, more than a little bit defensive.
She turned to smirk at him. "You, obviously! You seem so … put together normally and I didn’t think you’d be so afraid of something so … I don’t know. Cliche?" She bit her lower lip as if in apology for what she had said.
Sauce sighed and tried to relax. He felt like he’d been much too irrational earlier. "I don’t know why I don’t like them, they just creep me out. I’m not normally like this." He forced a smile back to Amy. "...And it’s only spiders, you know. Not all bugs."
"Oh, only spiders, huh?" Amy felt like, now that she thought about it, she was recalling a bug-related incident way back when they had first met. She looked away and then up at the ceiling. "You know, I’ve honestly never thought about this before, but I think I really like spiders. No, actually, I think I might love them. Have you ever seen a Joltik? Or like … Ariados? They’re some of the most beautiful things I think I’ve ever seen..!"
She continued to chatter for as long as he would let her, animatedly gesturing as she described all the spider-like creatures she had ever seen.
"What about poor Dustbunny?" she asked finally. "Are you terrified of him? He’s kinda buglike."
As they walked deeper into the library, Sauce kept a careful watch. If there were any other dangerous spiders around, he wanted to be sure to see them before they saw him.
"Well for one, he’s not actually a bug he’s a ground-type," Sauce pointed out. "So do you have any idea what this cipher we’re looking for might be?" He was eager to change the topic from bug-pokemon and spiders.
"Nope," Amy said simply. "So, what, were you attacked by a bunch of Spinarak when you were a kid or something? What would you do if you woke up and there was a Galvantula on your face?" She was starting to bounce a little on her tiptoes as they walked, clearly enjoying herself.
Sauce frowned at her. "No… nothing like that. They’re just creepy."
"It’s alright," Amy said fondly, feeling slightly bad for teasing. She rested her hand on his upper arm and made a silly, dramatic face. "I’m here to protect you."
Ersatz wiggled happily on Yorick’s shoulder.
"Ersatz will protect you as well!" she added, and laughed. "Let’s all vow right now, guys -- not one tickly, tiny spider leg will ever touch a hair on our Yorick’s head."
"Great," Sauce said sarcastically as he pushed open a pair of double doors. He was very unconvinced, but somehow the thought of everyone supporting him still gave him comfort. "I’m sure I’ll be completely safe n--”
“Danger!”
Both spies turned to look at the Absol and followed her gaze into the next room.
Section 2
(Wait, are those Bugs?!)
Do you hear that? Sounds of clicking and rustling; munching and... was that a Pokemon cry? Wait, look over there! Are those Wurmples and Caterpies and Weedles? Gross! And worse, it looks like they're eating the books! Watch out for any other bugs, like falling Joltiks!

Weedle
Level: 12 Ability: Run Away Moves: 3 Moveset: 1- Poison Sting 2- String Shot 3- Bug Bite
Info Many of the Weedles are easily irritated when interrupted from their meals. They refuse to let anyone get away with bugging them, so be prepared for a swarming. But don't worry, cause their ability is Run Away for a reason! Wurmple Level: 15 Ability: Shield Dust Moves: 4 Moveset: 1- Tackle 2- String Shot 3- Poison Sting 4- Bug Bite Info The Wurmples are the second most easily riled in the gang, but they don't like to be reminded they're second best. Guarantee these worms will be more than determined to show they're the top bugs in this joint. Caterpie Level: 10 Ability: Run Away Moves: 3 Moveset: 1- Tackle 2- String Shot 3- Bug Bite Info There isn't a single Caterpie around interested in battling. All they want to do is eat, sleep, and eventually evolve in peace. Be careful though, because that doesn't mean they'll ignore you. Rile up the others, the Caterpies just might involve others! Joltik Level: 25 Ability: Swarm Moves: 7 Moveset: 1- Thunder Wave 2- Absorb 3- Electroweb 4- Bug Bite 5- Spider Web 6- Screech 7- Gastro Acid 8- Fury Cutter Info Most of the Joltiks don't like to fight directly, but there are enough of them willing to hide on their opponents to do what must be done. Be careful travelers, because they're quite fond of Screeching for no discernible reason!
Sauce swore under his breath as he gazed in awe into the infested next room. There were bug pokemon everywhere. Every shelf seemed to be wriggling with pokemon tearing into the books.
"I guess they really did need our help. How could it have gotten so bad?"
"That’s really … something." Amy raised her eyebrows at the sight that greeted them. She turned sideways to her friend. "Are you, you know, going to be OK?"
Sauce shrugged, unsure of the actual answer. "Yeah… I’ll manage." He’d have to. "Let’s see if we can figure out where that cipher might be, while we’re in here."
Amy knew full well she wasn’t going to be any help at all in that, but she gave her biggest smile and nodded anyway. "Let’s do it! Where should we start looking?" Being able to control the Absol in their team was the only thing she would be able to bring to the table right now. She just had to make sure no spiders touched Sauce until he had figured out a clue! It was like a game!
"Well, let’s think about the hint.. It mentioned a water-type being paralyzed for over 80 years…” He scratched his head as he thought.
"Oh!" Amy snapped her fingers. "What about Snorlax? They fall asleep all the time!"
"Uhh, yeah.. Maybe," Sauce humored her, as he thought. "But--”
She bounced a little, excited that she might have helped. "Wait," she said, pausing her bounce. "Snorlax isn’t water type! You’re supposed to know these things!" She wandered away to inspect the nearest bookcase, bending over and squinting, but hoping not to give away their location to the cluster of bugs yet.
"Yeah…” He mumbled, starting to get lost in his thoughts. It would be impossible for them to figure this out if they were just trying to think of books by memory. It was almost definitely a book none of them had even heard of before. "There’s got to be a record of all the thing they keep here somewhere? Let’s find a PC."
"Ooh! What about…” She thought a little. "Gyarados!"
"Well that is closer than Snorlax, probably," He answered as he started creeping through the room. The bug pokemon didn’t seem particularly interested in fighting, and for that he was grateful, but he was still worried they would end up agitating them by accident.
Behind a bookshelf Sauce and Amy saw the glow of a computer monitor. Sauce excitedly dashed towards the screen and took a seat at the desk. "Here we go!" he called to Amy, cracking his knuckles with anticipation. He reached down and pulled the keyboard tray out only to see a Weedle blinking up at him.
Yorick’s eyebrows raised in surprise as the angry bug type screeched at him. He went to jump out of his chair just as he received a full blast of String shot to the face. His kicked his legs backwards and tumbled to the floor, toppling the chair with a loud bang.
"Kfffff!"
"Sshhhh!" she hissed back to him, eyeing up the bugs and flapping her arms. They didn’t look particularly strong, but who knew what a battle against all of them might draw closer. "What’s going on over there?!" She lowered her body a little and scuttled over to join him.
"Kffmmnnafaww!!" Sauce shouted, with a face full of String Shot.
"Yorick!" Amy cried, when she neared him. "Your face! It’s all covered in spoodge! Do you think now is the right time for that??"
Yorick mustered the wherewithal at that moment to turn to Amy and cock his head incredulously. "Mrrrf fhnnk!?"
"There’s no time!" She scrabbled at the slimy webbing covering his mouth until her fingernails dug through and created a hole. "We have important spy stuff to do!"
From the nearby bookshelves several other bugs had begun chattering angrilly. Amy looked up and around to see their glittering eyes, and she twisted her lips.
"I don’t think they want us here," she added in a whisper.
Sauce tugged at the hole in the stringshot enough to expose his now-bulging eyes and quickly took a glance around the room. "We don’t have time for this!" He spat just before ducking under the Weedle’s Poison sting shot. He scrambled further away and reached to his belt for Corona’s pokeball.
Amy gasped at the Weedle’s bold attack. "Sora would help," she said aloud, more to show her partner that she was learning than anything else. She fumbled with the blue flying type’s ball and released her, but then quickly remembered the state the poor pokemon was in as she warbled and twitched her wings. "Sorry…” She winced and returned her again. "I guess this is up to…”
Quell stepped forward before Amy could get her name out, fur bristling, and in a flash of light, Corona appeared beside her, tail wagging and looking around eagerly for some sort of challenge. It occurred to Yorick that these two hadn’t had much time to interact before now.
Quell turned her entire head towards Corona and her bright green eyes narrowed to slits. She had this -- why was the Flareon trying to get in the way? She let out a low growl and her bladelike tail flicked. Corona shook her mane in response to the sensed aggression. She was here to take care of Sauce, and there was nothing the other pokemon could do to intimidate her. Corona barked to Yorick, waiting for a command.
The Weedle puffed itself up, clearly not in the least bit intimidated by the two canine pokemon squaring up in front of it. It looked up and around and chattered a battle cry, and soon it was joined by a small swarm of other worm-looking pokemon, eyes all narrowed into angry slits.
They were going to defend the treasure they had found -- they had it too good here in the library with all-you-can-eat books to be forced into leaving by a couple of fuzzy bullies!
VS
"Alright," Sauce started, trying to keep his voice from quavering. He glanced at the surrounding bugs who looked like they were ready to get involved as well. They didn’t seem too tough. "Start with an Ember attack!"
"Yeah, let’s show them they messed with the wrong … library!" Amy cried, punching the air. "Go for a Bite on that Weedle!" She figured the original Weedle must be one of the stronger of the bunch since it had been so eager to attack them, so she wanted to knock it out as fast as she could.
Corona eyed the approaching bugs, which one was she supposed to attack? Yorick hadn’t specified! She turned and spat a puff of flames to the closest Wurmple which then curled into a ball, unconscious . She glanced back to Yorick looking for his approval and her trainer smiled back to her.
Quell breezed past Corona, not-so-subtly smacking her to the side with her tail as she went. Her jaws closed around the Weedle that had attacked Sauce and squeezed tight, making it screech. It writhed and clamped its own tiny mandibles onto Quell’s cheek flesh with a Bug Bite, and she had to let go, flinching at the unexpected sting of pain.
Corona stumbled back to catch her balance as she was pushed aside and growled angrily in Quell’s direction before turning back to look at Sauce. Had he seen what that Absol did to her? The fur on her back bristled as she thought about it. Just as she was about to turn back to the bugs, she felt a spray of sticky strings on her legs. A Caterpie squeaked angrily at Corona as another Wurmple to its side shot a second volley of stringshot.
"Feint Attack, don’t take any more damage," Amy warned, recognising that look in her partner’s eyes -- it had done more damage to the Absol than she was comfortable with. Quell pulled in a deep breath and then briefly disappeared in a cloud of curling darkness, instantly reappearing and slamming bodily into the offending Weedle. The tiny poison bug cartwheeled backwards and smacked into a lower shelf, knocked out.
A second Weedle wasted no time in raining Poison Stings on Quell from above, seeing what had happened to its fallen comrade and desperate for revenge. The Absol shook off hard like she was soaked through and then bared her teeth and tossed a look behind her at Amy.
"Don’t let it talk to you like that!" Amy yelled inexplicably, but she was getting nervous, seeing her strongest partner begin to be surrounded like this. "Uh -- Sucker Punch!"
The Absol concentrated but nothing happened, and a spray of powerful sticky goop launched at her from above, wrapping around her neck and suctioning quickly to the floor beneath her paws. She whined, shifting from paw to paw in vain. "Quell!" Amy yelled, hating the sight. "Uh -- Razor Wind, quick!"
Another String Shot coiled itself rapidly around Quell’s feet this time, gluing her firmly to the ground and angering her further. "Quell," Amy encouraged, "get that Razor Wind ready!"
"Okay, Corona, use Fire Spin on those two!" Sauce shouted. The Wurmple and Caterpie that had just attacked her were right next to each other, which meant that the fire attack could hit both at once.
Corona stumbled forward, not used to the String Shot around her legs throwing off her balance. Frustrated, shook her head and billowed a spiralling stream of fire around her opponents. The Caterpie shrieked before collapsing to the ground, but the Wurmple pushed through long enough to fire a poison sting attack towards its opponent.
The stinger flew through the air and landed in Corona’s side. The Flareon brushed off the initial attack but as soon as Sauce opened his mouth to give another command, Corona yelped and flinched in pain. Sauce rubbed his hair with his hand. Corona being poisoned so early on was just about the worst thing that could have happened in this battle. Besides more spiders, a voice in the back of his head added.
Finally a violent gust of wind roared through the aisle and sliced up the Weedle dangling from the top of the bookshelf, causing it to lose its grip on the side and tumble to the ground near the stuck Absol, where it bounced twice before regaining its balance. Quell struggled and snarled, trying desperately to clamp her jaws around the bug, but the Weedle quickly squirmed just out of her reach. Amy huffed, annoyed on her partner’s behalf.
"Go for a Sucker Punch again," she dared to order, knowing it was something she could do without moving too many of her muscles. Another Razor Wind could help cut through her restraints but it would just waste far too much time. Sucker Punch also meant that her lack of speediness wasn’t going to be an issue.
To her relief the black, swirling energy materialised this time and socked the Weedle in the core before it managed to ready its Poison Sting, sending it spinning away and blinking hard in astonishment. Dammit. Still not down? The Weedle looked completely incensed, and launched its entire tiny bug body full force at Quell and bit her hard on the nose with its Bug Bite, making her bay loudly. "What do we do if someone bites us?" Amy reminded, clenching her fists. "We Bite back!" Quell snarled and tossed her head, biting the Weedle so firmly in the centre that it just about split in half. Amy gasped and resisted the urge to cover her eyes with her fingers, or to sidestep and clutch Yorick’s arm.
"Finish that thing! Quick Attack!"
Corona shivered from the poison and took a step forward. Her legs were heavy from the string shot and her focus seemed to be waning each time she was hurt by poison. She crouched low to the ground before dashing forward at the Wurmple in a blur.
Wurmple released another String Shot at Corona as she streaked forward, catching her legs and causing her to somersault forward. She rolled end over end down the aisle and collided with Quell, finally unsticking her ankles from the ground and slamming the two of them into an adjacent bookshelf. The sound of more bug pokemon scrabbling forward came from above.
VS
With a shrieking cry, the Absol’s head blade began to glow and she bared her teeth, about to attack Corona out of pure instinct, but Amy clapped her hands once and drew her attention. "Bad Quell!" she chastised. The dark type lowered her head bitterly.
Yorick traded apologetic glances with Amy, unsure of what to say. He decided it would be better to focus on the task at hand. "Alright, Corona. Let’s get back up and back into the fight," he cheered.
The third Weedle showed itself, popping its teeny head from the lowest shelf and taking the opportunity to deliver a flurry of Poison Stings. One glanced off of Quell’s white fur but the next embedded deep into her skin and Amy felt her skin crawl with dread when she noticed the agony ripple through the Absol’s muscles.
"Dammit," she whispered. "They’re both poisoned!"
"We’ve got to beat these things quickly," Sauce responded.
"Did you hear that, Quell?" Amy asked, picking herself up onto her tiptoes to stare nervously at her Absol. It would be very bad for her if Quell were to get knocked out now. She had the feeling that their troubles here were far from over. "Finish off that Weedle fast!"
"Come on, Corona, use another Ember and take out one of those other Wurmple!" Sauce commanded, giving a sideways glance at Amy. The last time he’d told Corona to try a physical attack, she’d been tripped up by the abundance stringshot. It was better for her to keep with ranged moves.
"Right. Get back that one that poisoned you with a Feint Attack."
Corona spit flames at the final Wurmple. Unfortunately, she flinched as she felt a spasm of poison surge through and her ember attack sailed into the air, where it fizzled out harmlessly. The Wurmple let out a squeak of fear. That was too close of a call! Before another attack could be made it retaliated with another String Shot and squirmed away in the opposite direction, squeezing through a stack of books and away from the battle.
Quell, freed from the floor but still sticky and bound uncomfortably with silk, launched forward in a burst of crackling black energy but the Weedle utilised its tiny size and barrel rolled out of the way. Quell crashed into a shelf and sent books tumbling down on top of her body as well as scattering to the ground around the Flareon.
Corona flinched as the books toppled down onto her, but popped herself back up as quickly as she could manage. She yapped angrily at Quell. She would have been better off without the Absol’s help! The dark type snarled back and flashed the whites of her eyes threateningly. Tiny flames began to build up in Corona’s mouth before she was suddenly overcome by an extreme itchiness. She immediately scratched at her neck, but it didn’t seem to abate.
"Corona?" Yorick was suddenly very concerned. This didn’t look like any status he’d heard about in a pokemon battle before. Not to mention that they really had no time to waste, the longer they took the more the poison would take its toll on both Corona and Quell "What’s going on?"
Suddenly a ear-splitting screech came from Corona’s vicinity and Sauce clapped his hands over his ears. That wasn’t coming from his pokemon. A small yellow spider hopped from the fire-type’s fur and skittered along the ground. Corona staggered back upright, noticeably irritated. Sauce shivered again and his breath caught. A Joltik? Things were getting worse and worse.
"It’s OK, brush yourself off and go again," Amy ordered, unwilling to take the time to think of an actual strategy. "Feint Attack!" This time the Absol got the worm in her sights before launching an even faster attack, slicing at it with her head blade just as the Weedle fired off a couple of Poison Stings to the face, continuing to rapidly fire them while she pinned it with her paw and viciously tore at it with her teeth. Amy grimaced once again but praised her partner anyway for the defeat.
As soon as the third Weedle was down, however, Quell fell to her knees and shuddered violently, barely able to fight the effects of the poison anymore. Amy blinked hard, unable to think of anything clever to suggest. She noticed two more Weedle in the mix now, as well as a cute little yellow spider she recognised as a Joltik.
"Yorick, don’t look!" she yelled, half in jest and half actually nervous that her friend was not going to be able to handle a fight involving a spider.
"Too late," Yorick replied through gritted teeth. He wanted out of this Arceus-forsaken library! Why did the cipher have to be here?
"We’ll squish it, OK?" she said, trying to go for a comforting tone but probably coming off a little more patronising than she meant to. She patted his arm to emphasise her point.
"Use fire spin, Corona," Sauce shot a curt smile at Amy. He appreciated the effort to make him feel better, but at the moment he decided it would be better to focus on finishing this battle before even more Joltik showed up. "Let’s just do this."
"Help her out with a Bite!" Amy ordered Quell, who curled her lips back over her razor sharp fangs at the suggestion that it would be she helping the Flareon, not the other way around.
Corona shot another spiralling stream of flames at her opponents, entrapping the Joltik completely and scorching one of the new Weedle that had shown up. Joltik’s tiny mandibles flexed indignantly while the stricken Weedle suddenly felt very out-matched. The worm pokemon immediately turned tail and ran.
Quell leapt forward and then hesitated before meeting the Joltik with her attack -- the flames were spiralling around the bug type in such a way that she would have to stick her head in the fire in order to get a good Bite on the bug type. "Back up a sec," Amy said, realising why she had paused. Her only ranged attack was going to take a little while to charge, but that was better than nothing. "Get your Razor Wind ready instead!" After some concentration the wind in the distance began to howl.
The other Weedle seemed to hesitate. It’s beady eyes shot back and forth between Corona, and the fire, and the angry Joltik, and the fire, and the safety of the shelves behind it, and the fire. Finally deciding it would be better to live to fight another day, the pokemon shot a hasty poison sting towards quell, which was abruptly dashed in the increasing whirlwind.
The Joltik, unhappy at being trapped, let out an almost inaudible hiss and shot out a large Electroweb through the flames and around the rapidly backing away Absol, securing her once again to the ground and sending electricity coursing through her already trembling and exhausted body. Quell was nearly done for!
Sauce could feel beads of sweat forming on his forehead. He wasn’t sure if it was the dire situation they had fallen into, the fire attacks that had been sailing through the air, or the fact that he was sure there were spiders all around him. He swallowed the lump that had formed in his throat in time to issue another command, “Hit it with another ember, quick!" He was starting to feel the pressure building. They couldn’t afford to waste any time.
Amy shot Sauce a look, hoping he could see that her pokemon was on her last legs. Just as the Ember scorched the tiny bug, the Razor Wind roared through the aisles, tossing lighter books into the air and slashing pages from them, causing paper to rain down on everyone. The Joltik turned upside down and curled its legs above it.

"Finally," Amy said, and then shuddered as her skin began to feel really very itchy. How many more bugs were lurking? She had never had a problem with them before, but either Yorick’s nerves were catching or it was the sheer number of them, and the anxiety of her strongest pokemon being so close to fainting. "Yorick. Hack that system!" she said dramatically, pointing at the computer monitor.
Yorick let out a long slow exhale as the Joltik fainted. He looked around to ensure that any of the other bugs had retreated before walking back towards the computer system. "You know it’s not really hacking.." He said flatly. "This is a Library. The computer systems are designed to help you locate the book you want."
Quell toppled onto her side before Amy could answer, and she gasped and ran to the Absol’s side. "The poison!"
"In my bag, I’ve got a few Pecha Berries and some potions!" he said, mentally kicking himself for not remembering it sooner. He whipped off his backpack and rummaged through the pockets. Once he found what he was looking for he handed the the two berries and two potions to Amy. "I’ll work on finding the book, you take care of the pokemon? That’s all I’ve got with me, so save those potions if we don’t need to use them."
Delighted to have an important job to do, Amy gave a serious nod and took the meds from Yorick. She got to her knees and gingerly fed the Pecha berry to Quell, who nibbled on it queasily at first, but then her eyes flew open and she swallowed the rest in one gulp. After a few moments she got back to her feet, still woozy with exhaustion. Amy felt a little bad, considering Yorick had made it clear they only had limited supplies -- and he had pokemon too -- but she sprayed the Absol all over with the Potion and took a minute to rub it into her fur and muscles.
The effect was almost immediate. Quell gratefully nuzzled her head against Amy’s arm, and she giggled and planted a kiss on the dark type’s forehead. "What about Corona?" Amy asked Yorick, but her eyes were on the Flareon.
Yorick glanced away from the screen for just a moment to look at his pokemon, who was laying down, presumably ill from the poison. "She definitely needs a berry," He answered, and paused for a moment to ass Corona’s physical health. "Let’s save that second potion for now. We might need it later, and I think she’s still alright."
It made sense to Amy. Corona had the upper hand throughout that battle, so she wasn’t doing as bad as the Absol. She felt guilty about the way that situation had gone -- with Quell’s strength, it should have been much easier, but she had been nervous and had probably given the wrong commands.
"C’mere, Corona," she said, a big smile on her face. Corona’s ears perked up at the mention of her name and she sluggishly crept over to Amy. "Good girl," she praised, slowly reaching with one hand to rub her behind the ear, and raising the berry to her mouth with the other. With one eye on Quell, whose green eyes were narrowed and her fangs visible, the Flareon hesitated for a second, but then the need for the healing properties won out and she bit into the Pecha.
Amy’s smile widened. She knew Corona was Yorick’s pokemon, not hers, but she really liked her. She had never really bonded with Ersatz, who seemed kind of aloof and uninterested in stuff so far, but she felt like she understood the Flareon a little better. She wanted her and Quell to be best friends one day.
After taking the second bite of the berry, Corona shook out her fur and looked much healthier even to the naked eye. She looked Quell right in the face and then turned and marched back to sit at her trainer’s side and lean against his leg.
"Hey..." Yorick called Amy away from the now-healthy pokemon."I think I’ve got it!" With a final few clicks of the mouse he began explaining his findings. “So the clue mentioned a Water Type that had been Paralysed for four-score years, right? Well I found this book, called ‘The Binding of Ahab’. It’s about an abnormally large Wailord that gets defeated after being paralyzed in a massive battle." He paused to make sure Amy was following along. “Additionally it was written just over eighty years ago! Four-score, get it?" He grinned widely at her, quite proud of himself and reached down to affectionately rub Corona.
Amy didn’t remember what the code had said. "Yeah, wow. You’re so smart!" She raised her arms as if to fling them around his neck but then thought better of it -- she was trying to be more professional -- so she lowered them again. It probably looked like she was flapping her arms and trying to fly.
Yorick winked back at her in acknowledgement of the praise. "The directory says it’s a few rooms down." He stood up and looked around the room for the correct doorway and pointed at it. "Room E277." He looked back to Amy to check that she was ready and then crouched down to pet Corona and give the pokemon one more visual inspection to make sure she was healthy.
Sauce stood back up and dusted the last bits of silk from his shoulders. He took a minute to compose himself before heading off in the direction of room E277. "Let’s just hope we’ve dealt with the last of the bugs..."

They rounded the corner to the next room and just as Amy turned the handle she looked over her shoulder and could swear she saw dozens of tiny eyes staring back at her from the bookshelves. But they had defeated all the bugs in there, hadn’t they? She blinked a few times and they were gone.
According to the map Yorick had pulled up on the computer, room E277 was still deeper into the east wing of the library. The next room they came through was less of a room and more of a long hallway, still lined with bookcases, though none of them were of any importance to the two spies. The hallway was much darker than in most of the other areas of the library, almost suspiciously so. As if the lights had all been cut off the further towards their goal they went.
"How are your pokemon doing so far?" Amy whispered -- the low lights made her feel like she needed to keep her voice down though she wasn’t sure why.
Sauce looked down at Corona first. The fire-type was panting as she moved, but she seemed to be keeping up pretty well. Definitely a bit worn out, but she still looked like she would be able to fight, if needed. As Sauce looked back up, Ersatz wiggled energetically to his side. The blob had drooped himself over Yorick’s shoulder.
"They both seem alright so far. I’m sure Corona could use a long rest after this is over though…"
"And you?" Amy teased.
"I’m absolutely fine," he lied. "I’ll probably take a long break from libraries after this."
"Right," Amy agreed, trying not to smile as she looked straight ahead of her. "Because it’s the library that’s CRAWLING UP YOUR NECK RIGHT NOW OH MY GOD YORICK!"
Despite knowing better, Yorick hopped into the air, spinning around and flailing his hands at the back of his neck. Ersatz jiggled and waved wildly as his trainer tried to remove the imaginary spiders from his body. After a couple seconds Sauce regained control of himself and glared back at Amy.
"You’re very funny," he huffed.
She giggled and raised her arms, about to give a very insincere apology, but she was interrupted by the strangest noise.
"Mmmph!"
If it hadn’t been coming from the dark end of the long hallway before her, Amy would have figured it was Yorick wailing into his hands, or something, at the thought of some kind of predatory arachnid, but he was standing right there with nothing covering his mouth.
"Did you hear that?"
"I’m not falling for that," Sauce replied flatly.
She turned to squint at him, holding out her arm to stop him in his tracks before they passed the last dimmed sconce and stepped into darkness. "Hang on," she said, dropping her voice back to a whisper. Not that there was any point when they had just been shouting. "Sshhh!!" She swatted at him even though he remained silent.
"Mmmrrp!"
"Really Amy? You learned ventriloquism just to freak me out?" he demanded.
Amy stared at him until he realised he had said something stupid. He turned to face the sound slowly, suddenly much more concerned about its origins than he had been seconds ago.
"Okay.. What is that?"
The spies traded more serious glances and began creeping forward with much trepidation.
"Mm! Mmmm! MMM!!!!"
The muffled screaming only seemed to get louder the closer they got, and at first Amy wondered if the person, or whatever it was, was threatening them to leave. That, of course, was only going to empower them to keep moving! But then she flicked on the flashlight app on her Nav and shone it at the scene in front of her in a flash of brilliance, and realised…
… they were not being threatened, but rather warned.
A gigantic spiderweb stretched out across the hallway a couple feet from them. The silk extended from either wall and all the way from the ceiling to the carpet. In the corner on the right hung a writhing human-sized lump.
Amy’s breath caught in her throat when she realised what she was looking at .. and then her heart rate increased further when she began to imagine how Yorick must be feeling beside her. Was this, like, an arachnophobe’s worst nightmare situation or what?
Beside her, Yorick was frozen in a cold sweat. His trembling hand was nervously tugging at his hair and his weight seemed to be all on his heels, as if he was willing himself to run. Corona rubber her head reassuringly against his leg.
Amy figured she might need to take the lead on this one…
"I don’t want to freak you out," she said gently, almost in a singsong tone, "but if there’s a web this size … maybe don’t wander off, is all I’m saying." She clicked her fingers a couple of times, unable to see wherever her device wasn’t pointed, until Quell loped to her side, eyes wide. "Well at least Quell doesn’t seem to think there’s any--"
“Danger.”
Amy let out a breath. "Never mind."
The confirmation that something was indeed wrong in this room made Yorick’s heart skip a beat. Visions of large, hairy, leggy and scuttling monsters from the deepest pits of hell itself flashed across his mind’s eye until he began to feel tickling legs on every inch of his body. "I think I have to step outside," he said to Amy, but his voice came out so quiet that she couldn’t hear.
"Quell, where’s the danger?" she yelled instead of spending time comforting her visibly shaken friend, which was what she really wanted to be doing. "Is there something bad in here with us?"
There was a beat as the Absol’s nostrils twitched and her green eyes flashed in the light of the digital torch. Amy swallowed. Yorick flicked at a tickling itch at the back of his neck and, of course, found nothing there.
"Maybe we should just back out of the room," she whispered. "Find the employees, get them to turn the lights back on in this section. Just walk backwards with me."
But her partner was frozen to the spot. Finally, wordlessly, he pointed upwards at the ceiling. Amy paused before following his finger.
”Danger,” Quell confirmed, her translator flashing red.
She squeezed her eyes shut for a moment and then when she opened them she pointed her torchlight app up above them.
There, not two feet from their heads, was a wet, chomping pair of mandibles, eyes black as voids, and legs covered in fine hairs, trembling with anticipation and coiled like springs. Ready to jump. It had clearly turned its attention from its already captured prey to these new bodies, ready to wrap them up tight in its web.
"I think it might be too late," Amy whispered, reaching out to take Yorick’s wrist in her hand, "but don’t look up, OK?”
Section 3 (Trouble in the Webs!)
You managed to get further into the library, but with all these bugs eating the books, what are the chances you'll find what you're looking for? Maybe there's a librarian around who can lend a hand, though should you really call on an employee's help? Speaking of employees, do you hear that? Sounds like someone needs help. Up ahead, there seems to be a giant Ariados web hidden in the aisles, and something large is caught in it. The Ariados is creeping toward the unlucky victim, and the victim is still calling for help. What to do?

Ariados
Level: 25 Ability: Swarm Moves: 8 Moveset: 1- Swords Dance 2- Focus Energy 3- Absorb 4- Shadow Sneak 5- Night Shade 6- Fury Swipes 7- Infestation 8- Constrict
Info There's something strange about this Ariados, like it's taking orders from someone, somewhere. But that's impossible right? Maybe this hungry bug is just really determined to keep its prey so it can enjoy a feast.
"MmmMMMPH!"
Amy’s attention was drawn rapidly back to the squirming lump caught in the nest. Definitely a person. Above her head was definitely an Ariados. And, honestly, it was a lot bigger than she had ever thought they got. Not to mention the fact it was trying to kill and eat people; that was highly unusual!
"Are you … alright in there?" she called out to the prey caught in the web. There was no answer but the dimly lit wriggling of whatever definitely humanoid shape was hidden beneath silk. At the same time as speaking, Amy shifted uncomfortably to her right, nudging Yorick out from underneath the twitching, gurgling predator dangling delicately above their heads. She didn’t want to order an attack and have it fall on Yorick. Not because it would harm him, necessarily, but because an experience like that would surely put the arachnophobe out of action for quite some time -- and they needed to figure out this code!
Corona yipped alarmingly at her trainer, grabbing his pant leg in her teeth and pulling him backwards. Amy could see the enlarged pupils of his eyes darting between whoever was mummified within the Ariados’ web and the skulking shape of the Ariados itself. Whatever control of himself Yorick had left, he used to very slowly stagger backwards, with the aid of Corona’s persistent tugging.
Noticing its trainer’s distress, Ersatz decided to make use of himself by trying to remove Yorick from the situation entirely. Or at least make Sauce think he was removed from the situation. The purple glob stretched himself across Sauce’s face, masking his eyes from the terrifying sight. Ersatz face stretched happily on top of Sauce’s own. He was sure that blinding Yorick would be the key to soothing his nerves.
Of course, being terrified and then subsequently losing his sense of sight wasn’t exactly the relaxing experience Ersatz had planned, but the sudden change in stimuli did shake Sauce out of his paralysis. He gave a muffled scream against his pokemon’s putty-like body and reached across his face to pry the Ditto loose. While he was flailing at his face, Corona tugged harder to keep him moving, causing him to fall backwards onto the ground, now flailing even more vigorously as before.
Amy, also backing up, tripped over her thrashing friend’s long and wayward limbs but caught herself before toppling onto the ground next to him. She brushed her hair from her eyes and then thrust out her arm to help him up.
"Who should we use?" she whispered to Yorick when he was back on his feet and beside her, slightly behind her.
Sauce squeezed his eyes shut for a second to clear his head, Ersatz was dangling from his neck now, very confused. “Uhhh.." He stumbled while he quickly tried to weigh the options. Corona of course, was the best choice, but then she was already tired from her last battles. Not to mention that that Ariados looked much larger and more dangerous than usual. Sauce could feel the sweat on his brow and a chill ran back up his spine as he thought about it. And then there was that poor person trapped in its web. The muffled screams haunted Yorick’s mind. The best option was surely escape! His eyes widened in terror once again as they fixated on the writhing mass of spider silk. They had to run away as fast as possible otherwise they were going to be next!
…NO!
Yorick snapped himself back out of it and looked away from the monster’s web. Instead he turned to look at Amy’s smiling but concerned face. She was relying on him. Yorick had a job to do. For the 77. For Amy. There was nowhere for him to go but press forward. Running away was not an option.
"Hmm.." He thought further, squinting his eyes.
Sora would have been great choice, had she not already been knocked out earlier that day. Quell didn’t have an actual type advantage of course, but her strength and sometimes unnerving ferocity made her the very best pick from their limited options. Not to mention that she’d been healed already.
Unless…
"Ersatz!" he shouted triumphantly. The blob hanging from his neck looked up curiously. "Transform into another Flareon!"
The mimic pokemon beamed excitedly before flinging itself off of Sauce’s neck and transforming mid-air into its ally.
As the Ditto began to change shape, Amy shot a proud look over at Yorick for taking control back despite the fear. "Quell," she said, eyeing up the dangling spider, clearly waiting for the best time to make its move. "Give Ersatz some backup if he needs it." She didn’t want to crowd the battlefield but having the Absol nearby and ready would be nothing but a good thing.
VS
The Ariados stayed dangling in place for several extra seconds, which made Amy’s brow twitch in confusion -- wasn’t it alarmed that the ersatz Flareon was moving closer and ready to douse it in flames? Its glittering eyes didn’t even seem to be focused on anything … but it was definitely alive, breathing, clicking its mandibles.
Maybe Yorick had a point about bug pokemon after all.
Then all at once it started to move, and fast, as if something unknown had triggered its movements, crawling down its web and towards the approaching canines.
"Coro-- I mean Ersatz! Use Fire Fang!" Sauce commanded immediately once the pokemon began to move. He had no intention of waiting around to react to whatever nefarious plans this arachnid had.
Ersatz bounded forward into the battle and immediately leapt towards the Ariados hanging from the ceiling, teeth bared and flames licking from its mouth. The purple flareon soared through the air but just as it would have made contact, the Ariados sprung from one section of the room to another, leaving Ersatz to chomp unsatisfyingly at the air. Once the spider landed, it raised a pair of its legs high into the air and rubbed them together rhythmically.
"What’s that?"
"It looks like a Swords Dance," Yorick gulped. "Be careful.. It’s attack power just doubled."
"Doubled??"
As if on cue, the Ariados crawled directly towards Quell and pounced into the air. With its bolstered attack, it slashed wildly with a pair of its razor sharp legs, letting loose several swipes in quick succession. Fortunately, Quell was on full alert and managed to duck and dodge the first strike with her Detect.
"Bite it!" Amy cheered, punching the air at her pokemon’s success despite the fact that her attention had been on Coro-- er, Ersatz. "Yorick?" she whispered suddenly and urgently in her friend’s direction.
"Hmm?" He shot a distracted look to his partner.
"Do we call Ersatz ‘she’ right now ... or ‘it’? Or what?"
Yorick furrowed his eyebrows at her, but smiled. She would ask a question like that in the middle of a battle. His eye twinkled as he smiled at her. "Transform is supposed to copy the pokemons form entirely, so.. Maybe a her? But I’m not actually really sure?" He spoke quickly as the battle unfolded. Perhaps now wasn’t the best time for the discussion, but he appreciated the change in mood.
Meanwhile, Quell had successfully avoided the Ariados’ Fury Swipes and retaliated. She moved at an almost unnatural speed, her fur leaving a crimson-pink blur as she swiftly ducked beneath her foe’s final strike and under its guard. Quells canines sank into the Ariados exoskeleton, leaving a large crack and causing the bug pokemon to shriek in pain and anger.
Reflexively the Ariados retaliated with a Night Shade that bloomed from the shadowy floor and lurched up to alarm the Dark type, doing little damage but causing her jaws to release. Ariados twisted towards Quell upon its release and readied another attack, eye’s glowing with a sinister green energy.
"Fire Fang!"
Ersatz dashed forward back into the frey and pounced onto the Ariados, sinking it’s jaws deep. Flames billowed out of the corners of the purple pokemon’s mouth as it engaged the fire fang. The Ariados flinched backwards and stopped his previous attack. Sauce found himself grinning wickedly as the spider shrieked in surprise. Having arachnophobia was certainly a hindrance, but it definitely made seeing every blow they dealt the spider all the more satisfying.
"Quick, Quell," Amy ordered while the opponent looked to be on the last of its many legs. "Feint Attack."
The Absol stretched out her long limbs, gritting her teeth and shooting a glance to the ersatz Flareon. It was clear that, for whatever reason, she had no issue with fighting side by side with the Ditto -- even when it was taking Corona’s form.
“Ersatz, Helping Hand!”
The purple Flareon leapt into the air, sparkled for a second, and then sent a torrent of happy magical glittery energy in Quell’s direction, which imbued her with temporary super strength as sbe disappeared and reappeared in the shadows, shooting her body with all of her strength into the spider’s abdomen just as it reared up, eyes glowing, in an attempt at another Infestation attack. As Quell collided with the Ariados, the spider scattered tiny latching, sucking blobs everywhere, and Amy was glad none of them had made contact with her Absol.
She called Quell back to her side and watched as the Ariados twitched, almost as if it was being compelled kind of against its will to continue to move, but then it fell onto its back and its legs curled over above it. Amy let out a breath and rested her hand on Yorick’s shoulder as if to wordlessly reassure him that it was over.
Quell and Ersatz VS Ariados Ariados uses Swords Dance. Its attack is sharply raised. Ersatz uses Fire Fang. But it misses. Quell uses Detect. Ariados uses Fury Swipes. Quell avoids the attack… Quell uses Bite. Ariados used Nightshade. Ersatz Used Fire Fang. It’s super effective Ariados Used Infestation, but it Flinched! Ersatz used Helping hand. Quell used Feint Attack. Ariados fainted.
"Mmmggrrrft!!"
The figure thrashed in the web and Amy let out a gasp. "What do we do?" she asked Yorick, kneeling to check Quell over for any injuries or poisonings but finding that she was alright.
"Have Quell cut that person loose!" he said as he crouched down to pet Ersatz. The pokemon let out an unnaturally large smile as it shifted back into its regular blob-like state. Corona butted her way in between the two and Yorick gave her a scratch behind her ear just as he picked the grinning ditto up and slung him back over his shoulder.
Amy looked at Quell and thought about it for a moment. The person was hanging, tightly bound in silk, from a strong-looking rope. She wasn’t entirely sure it was a good idea to shoot Razor Winds all over the place but she trusted the Absol’s aim. "Can you cut that string and free whatever is inside that?" she asked her strongest pokemon, and the Absol let out a low noise of affirmation, her eyes and blade glowing briefly as a wind picked up in the distance.
"Fffffmmph!" the writhing lump called, seconds before Quell unleashed her attack and blades of air cut through the large silk strands like paper. The shape fell down to the carpet and landed with a low thump, kicking madly.
"Aahhh! Is it OK? Are you OK??"
Sauce and Amy rushed over to tear away at the poor cocooned person. Their fingers tore wildly at the strings until they broke through and Amy’s fingers slipped inside his screaming mouth. "Oop," she said. "Bit intimate."
A scrunched up face looked back at the pair as Amy withdrew her hands. It was no one they had seen before. The man spit and choked on the fresh air as he struggled to widen the hole they had created. He reached his arms through and wiped sweat and guck from his brow.
"Who are you?" Yorick questioned.
"Who the dickens are you!?" the other man responded, clearly very irate. He glared at his rescuers with a furrowed brow.
"That’s not very gracious way to thank the people that just saved your life." Yorick’s eyes narrowed at the man. After a tense second Yorick sighed and calmed himself down. "We were asked by the librarians to help clear out this library. Do you know what happened here? How long has it been this bad?"
As the man began to speak, he continued to brush away webbing from his silvery red hair and grimacing at whatever horrors he had been through in the last hour.
"Thank you … yes … thank you," he finally said, shuddering deeply. "Bugs like that, they just don’t know how to distinguish between the things they should eat and the things they absolutely should not."
"EXACTLY!" Yorick cried, triumphant that his point had finally been proven
"Well, we’ve taken care of it for now," Amy reassured him, "but it’ll probably be up and moving again soon, so let’s get out of here, OK? Can you move?"
The man looked, for some reason, more relieved at the second portion of her words than the first. "You didn’t kill it?" he double checked. When she shook her head, he nodded once and pushed himself to his feet.
He was an elderly man of medium height and above average weight, wearing a worn and thin grey herringbone suit and old-fashioned bow tie to match, in style, with his thick bristled moustache. Such a well-kept and well-spoken man was not the kind of peron the spies would have pictured being lured into something so obvious as a gigantic spiderweb. He must have made a string of rather bad decisions to end up in such a life-threatening predicament.
"So, you never answered my question. Who exactly are you?"
"My name is Herbert Redding, though most of my good friends know me by ‘Red’ due to my bright red hair. Or at least.. It used to be such." He combed a hand through his thinning hair to put it back into place. "Anyhow! I’m just a regular old citizen here. I’ve donated so much to this library that the employees here know to allow me to come and go as I please!" He gestured to a plaque roughly with his forefinger and Amy squinted to read it in the low light.
"The Redding Room," she muttered. "Oh! I get it! Because it’s a library. A reading room!"
"No, girl, it’s my name. I paid for it, so they named it after me."
"Yes, it’s very clever."
"It’s not a pun, it’s just named after m--"
"Let’s go!" she yelled, clearly bored by this conversation. She leaned in to Yorick’s ear as they moved through the end of the hallway. "This guy just doesn’t shut up, huh?"
Yorrick nodded. "Yeah,” he answered generally. "So,” he turned back to the old man. “If you’re so familiar with this place, maybe you can help us locate a book we’ve been sent t-- Uhh, we’ve been searching for."
"Oh?" Red’s eyes twinkled in the torchlight.
"Yeah, we’re very, uh, vicious readers." Amy threw a look at Yorick.
"Voracious."
"Voracious readers."
"Uh huh…" Red didn’t look convinced but he didn’t seem to feel like questioning them either. "Put … make sure your pokemon are out front, alright? This place really isn’t very safe right now."
Corona pushed her way in between Sauce and the man, clearly irked by the insinuation that she wasn’t on alert. She was just as good as Quell at protecting her trainer, if not better!
"It’s called the Binding of Ahab.” Yorick paused to pet Corona’s back as she nudged his leg. " We know the room, but it would be great if maybe you could point us to the right shelf. This whole place is like a labyrinth."
A light flickered in his eyes, but it was probably just Amy’s flashlight reflected, and Red answered very quickly. "Right, one of my favorites... I’ll be happy to assist you."
"Hey, what a cool coincidence," Amy said with delight, and happily walked right behind him as he strode away.
