After his encounter with Damien, who was quite an odd fellow by every standards, Beau spent an hour backtracking his steps to Honu City’s one of many entrances. There, he looked around and wandered a bit further along the path until he spotted a signpost pointing him to the correct direction of the town he was supposed to go to. He didn’t know much about Jujine Town but he knew its fame as the starting town where every aspiring trainers flocked to the professor residing in there. If the town was famous enough to have plenty of trainers heading through there, then maybe Damien’s words had some truth behind them.
“Gear up, huh…?” Beau murmured to himself as he walked on the widest path. What exactly was he supposed to do with that? He wasn’t even sure of what he needed to buy other than a backpack. The way the odd guy pointed out his fanny pack wasn’t exactly positive and even went so far to have a point. He wouldn’t be able to store anything beyond small things in it, even though he intended to find a dragon and come home within a day or two.
“Backpack.” he said to himself, as if speaking it aloud would help cement the word into his mind. “What else…?”
Sonata chirped and patted his midsection, her ears twitching at the grumbling in his stomach. He glanced down to the Cleffa and frowned a bit. Food. He’d need to get food for himself and his team. That was such a basic thing that he totally forgot about it until now. He didn’t even bring any snacks for the road, having completely assumed the entire ordeal wouldn’t be too difficult. He sighed as he remembered how he thought there would be plenty of towns on the road with at least a cafe he could drop in.
Beau seriously didn’t want to trust Damien by any long shot, but that man was way more experienced than he was when it came to this stuff. Two or three weeks at maximum just to traverse the desert just to get to Pearl Crater? That definitely required the knowledge of preparing food on the field, which he didn’t have, and plenty of snacks and non perishables, which he also didn’t have.
His frown deepened as he realized he was way over his head. There were so many little things he should’ve planned and accounted for, but he didn’t because he wanted to get a dragon now. However, he wouldn’t back out, for he was a man of his word! His family taught him that and he kept to that closely to his heart.
A warble drew his attention back to the Pokemon cradled in his arms and he smiled down at her. “What’s up, Sonata?” he asked, watching her pat her belly. A frown came back onto his face once again and he sighed, “I don’t have any food… I didn’t pack anything. Lemme see what time it is now, okay?”
Once he got a chirp and a nod from Sonata, he tugged his phone out of his pocket and turned it on to check the clock. The interface revealed that it was actually an hour past the usual lunchtime and he groaned at that. They were going to have to go hungry for few more hours until they reached Jujine Town and got a nurse in Pokemon Center to check everyone over. Afterwards, they could grab something to eat, write down what he needed to buy so he could grab only those things, and try to head over to Marei City.
“Sonata…” Beau murmured, “We’ll have to be hungry for a little while.”
The Cleffa frowned and whined at that, folding her large ears against her skull. How long was she not supposed to eat? She was already hungry and wanted to eat the berries she always ate! She huffed and rested against Beau’s torso since there wasn’t much else for her to do.
Beau already felt quite bad about having to make Sonata go without food for few more hours, but it was necessary. As he continued down the wide path, he encountered eager trainers and politely but firmly told them he wasn’t looking for any battles. He thanked Arceus when they actually listened and apologized for interrupting his journey. They already were far better than Jessica and some of them were roughly about at the same age as her! Bad parents, indeed.
He shook his head as he continued on the path, occasionally talking and soothing the Cleffa. It would be better if he had a human company to pass the time, but he had decided yesterday that he’d try to get a dragon on his own. Oh well, he supposed it was his own fault so he had to shoulder the results and keep going. Hours steadily trickled away as he trudged on until the sun was dipping heavily into the sky, barely brushing against the treetops, and Jujine Town was in his sight.
Finally! Beau let out a relieved sigh and hurried his steps so he could be in the town sooner. Before long, he was in the town and glanced around to observe it. It was a rather nice and quaint town with a calm air, which was starkly contrasted by children running around with their parents following behind them. He could hear the adults telling their children to calm down and behave behind him as he walked on. There were even some teenagers sitting around on the ledges or sitting around cafes’ tables, chatting animatedly about what kind of starters they’d choose from Professor Pine’s lab.
It reminded him of that one sole time he tried to ask about going on a Pokemon journey when he was younger. The details were difficult to remember due to that event being about eight to ten years ago, but he clearly remembered the utter disappointment he experienced when his parents - or one of his parents - coldly shut him down. He couldn’t remember the exact words uttered or how the entire thing played out, but the hot disappointment still lingered in the shadows of his memories.
Afterwards...
Beau shook his head clear of that memory and huffed out a sharp sigh. This was no time to wallow in the past! He needed to keep going forward! Speaking of going forward, a familiar-looking building stood beside him, drawing his attention to its bright red sign and white letters declaring itself to be the Pokemon Center. He took a step back to observe the interior from the windows and noted the light crowd in it. It wasn’t overly busy, and he couldn’t really see anyone standing at the counter so he could get his Pokemon seen within minutes.
The young man stepped into the air-conditioned space and made a beeline towards the counter. He took a moment to convince Sonata before he was able to absorb her back into her ball and presented all three poke balls to the nurse. He took a seat and waited quietly for few minutes, occasionally glancing around the humble room and watching people meander around. Once his name was called, he retrieved his poke balls and stepped back into the cooling air with them strapped back onto his belt.
“Hrm… Let’s see.” Beau mumbled as he wandered around and eventually went into the food district of the town. He was hungry, and he knew his Pokemon were as well. They had to be. He glanced at various restaurants, taking special notice of how they’d state Pokemon wasn’t welcomed in the establishment. A frown made its way back onto his face at this and he quietly left those restaurants alone, unwilling to be a patron for the night. He needed to be able to feed his Pokemon at the same time as he ate. It was more of a habit at this point from always having Sonata eat with him, and it bled over to his desire to make sure his other two Pokemon did the same.
“Ah-!” the young man perked up upon seeing a cafe with patrons that had small to medium Pokemon out and about. That had to be perfect, even if the cafe itself seemed to be a lesser class than the restaurants he previewed. Food was food, as long as it didn’t upset his stomach. He stepped into the line and eventually paid for the food, quickly whisking them to a table away from the crowd. His Pokemon soon joined him and they ate their meal in relative silence, though the young man did hear some people pointing out Galliard’s fur color.
He narrowed his eyes at his food as he quickly polished his dish and promptly returned his Pokemon once they were done with their food as well. Only Sonata was left out as usual and she was quickly picked up into his arms as he tossed away the paper plates. It was a bit of a harrowing moment when he had to walk away from the cafe and there were couple of people who wanted to speak to him about his Electrike, but he managed to push past them with a mumble of ‘excuse me’.
Beau was particularly quick to get to somewhere after that, not liking how those select people hyperfocused on Galliard. He kept an eye out for someplace he could sleep for the night, and possibly still have the room for tomorrow as well. He eventually found several hotels and decided to go with the busier one since that probably meant those people couldn’t try tailing him to snatch his dog away from him. Maybe that was just paranoia talking to him, but he really didn’t like that moment.
His decision to go to the busier one wound up with him waiting for a while until he was able to speak to the person manning behind the desk. It was even worse when he discovered the better rooms were already taken up, forcing him to have to go with a single room for a rather limited time. It was whatever at this point, though. He was tired from the hours of solid walking all day today and he had to plan out what he needed to do tomorrow so he wouldn’t make any careless purchases that wouldn’t do anything for his journey.
With a keycard in his hands and all of the forms filled out, he went straight to his room and let his Pokemon out before he allowed himself to sit down on the bed. The sheets weren’t exactly good compared to his own blankets at home, but it was okay enough. He let out a sigh, took his shoes and fanny pack off, and slid underneath the sheets.
Before he realized it, he fell asleep with his Pokemon huddled up against him.

Beau yawned and stretched a bit in the bed, feeling a weight against the back of his knees. He sleepily peered up to see Galliard curled up in a tight ball against the bend. He grumbled a little and yawned once more before he sat up, waking up both the Electrike and the Cleffa. As his Pokemon spent the next few minutes yawning, he took care of his own needs and redid his hair, though he had to use his hand as a rough brush. It wasn’t perfect at all, but he would have to deal with it for now.
“All right, guys, today…” the young man announced to his team as he fixed his clothes, trying to tug some of the wrinkles out of them, “Today is going to be my shopping spree to actually better prepare myself just so I can actually, properly, obtain a dragon of my own.” He sighed softly, “But I still remember last night so I’m going to have to keep you-” He pointed a finger at the shiny Electrike, “-in the ball whenever we’re out in the public because shinies aren’t exactly a common thing. I don’t want anyone trying to kidnap you.”
Galliard snorted at that, but nodded. The reasoning was sound, even if he’d rather not be holed up in the ball for the day.
“But for now, we gotta have to eat breakfast.” the rich man continued, “So we’ll have to find some place else where we won’t encounter those people again just in case. And then… Hrm…” He glanced down at himself, trying to decide which part of his shopping spree was the most essential once he was done with the breakfast. “Well, we’ll figure that out once we’re done eating breakfast.” he eventually decided.
With that, he proceeded to return the dog and bird back to their balls, put his shoes and fanny pack back on, and picked the Cleffa up. He gave the room a glance to make sure he wasn’t leaving anything behind and patted his pockets to make sure he still had his keycard. Once he reassured himself that he had everything, he left the hotel to find another restaurant that wasn’t the cafe from last night and eventually found one after a while of searching.
It was a nice and pleasant experience of just sitting there and enjoying the scenery as they ate without worrying about some rabid trainer getting jealous over his shiny Electrike. Or were they trying to ask about where he found his dog so they could try capturing one of their own in the area? He hummed in thought as he sipped on his tea. Now he probably should’ve stayed around long enough to have a casual conversation… if they were of the rich class. Which he was pretty sure they weren’t.
“Hm.” Beau started once he was done with his breakfast, “Maybe I should get some clothes first…” He did need a fresh outfit for the day so the clothes shopping was definitely a must. “All right, so I’ll get some clothes, but you guys will have to stay in your balls. I don’t think the shops would appreciate Pokemon wandering around unless they have a Pokemon clothes section.” he decided once his team was done eating their meals.
He returned them back into their balls once more before he paid for his food and left the place. Once again, it was another round of half-searching and half-wandering until he came across something decent in his opinion. He stood before a shop that looked to be just as humble as everything else, but still appeared to be moderately stylish. He gave it an approving nod before he walked into the shop and was immediately approached by a lady dressed in a forest-green tank top and bootcut trousers with a jacket tied around her waist.
“Welcome to Up Shirt Creek! How may I help you?” the lady greeted with a smile.
“Uh, yeah.” Beau nodded, “I’m here to look around for some clothes. Apparently I’m supposed to wear some practical clothes since someone told me my current outfit would be damaged very quickly.”
The golden-brown haired lady gave the young man an appraising look and nodded, flicking her eyes up to his face. “Unfortunately, they’d be correct, sir.” she stated flatly, “Skinny jeans doesn’t make any traveling comfortable and may potentially cause chafing if you aren’t careful. The major problem with your pants is its restriction. You don’t want it to be restrictive because you’ll sweat up a storm when you’re walking around a lot and it’ll trap the heat, which will just make it worse for you.”
The young man nodded and wondered for a moment before asking, “What about my shirt? Or well, shirts.”
“Well, it looks like you might be just fine with your tops, but if they aren’t cotton and polyester blend, it won’t be any better than your pants.” she replied before waving him along as she walked through the store to get to the men’s section.
“Why that blend? Is there anything unique about that?” Beau asked.
“You need a close-fitting shirt that can wick away your sweat so the wind can dry it off and you can stay dry and cool at the same time instead of letting the sweat sit on your body. And the blend just makes it so that it’s breathable but still be easy enough to move around in.”
“Oh…” he murmured, glancing over the options he had to browse. There weren’t really a lot he could find and most of them didn’t seem like they’d suit the image he had to uphold for the sake of his family’s name. “Isn’t there anything better? I need to make sure I present myself appropriately as my family’s name holder.”
The lady sighed at this and shook her head. “‘Fraid not, sir. Most people in your class tend to underestimate just how good some basic clothes can be. Trust me, these clothes will take you far until you need to upgrade your gear.” she explained. “If you don’t mind, sir, may I ask about your family’s name?”
“Yeah. It’s the Walsh Family.” Beau proudly announced with a grin.
The lady’s expression immediately darkened and the small smile she had on her face for the entire time disappeared in a heartbeat. She eyeballed him and slowly nodded once with a hum before she cleared her throat and gestured to the shirts folded on the display table. “You should give these shirts a try. If you’re gearing yourself up for the first time, you should take a set of clothes you’re buying. Helps to be prepared ahead of time.”
Beau awkwardly nodded at that, grateful for the lady to have moved things along. “Thank you. What about pants? Any suggestions for that?”
“You’ll want the pants to be loose enough to keep your legs well-ventilated, but shorts does the job well enough so you can go with that for a while until you need to switch to trousers for the fall and winter seasons.” she nodded at the pants section as she spoke.
“What about jeans?”
The lady shook her head and the small smile came back onto her face. “It’s too heavy and restrictive, no matter how loose enough it is. It’s fine for short hikes, but for the long-term hikes like a trainer’s journey, you’ll want to go with something light, comfortable, and roomy. It’s why shorts are so popular.”
“Oh, I see.” Beau murmured and began to look over the shirts and pants available to him. He wasn’t even sure how to feel about that strange reaction the lady displayed. It was similar to Damien’s! Was there something about his family he didn’t know about? Sure, his parents made sure he kept up with the news and additional news outlets so he’d learn from other businesses and what went wrong with them, but he never really seen his family’s business in any negative spotlight. As far as he was concerned, there was nothing wrong with selling breeding and training equipments designed especially for Pokemon to help them be the very best they could be.
He lightly shook his head and refocused back on the shirts he needed to pick out. There were quite a variety of colors so he decided to go with a blue and green shirts. He wasn’t one hundred percent certain about his choices, but they’d have to do for now. As for the pants, it was easier to pick out than the shirts and he wound up with a set of light pants. Afterwards, he threw on additional items suggested by the lady.
“I think I should be set.” Beau said as he looked at the clothes sitting on the checkout counter.
“Yep, you definitely are.” the lady agreed, scanning each item. “I’d suggest you head over to Spore T Goods so you can get an Edge Tech backpack to store all of this and your additional gears.”
“... Additional gears?” he asked, shooting the lady a disbelieving look, “What do I have to pack?”
“Well, to put it simply, you’d need at least a sleeping bag and something over your head when you sleep.” the lady shrugged, “Plus you’ll need supplies like food, medicines and first aid kit, things like that.”
Beau slowly shook his head as he paid for his clothes and thanked the lady for her patience since he felt as if he was testing her just by being there now that she knew who he was. However, he asked her for the directions to the Spore T Goods store before he left. Soon, with the list of directions to the store, he moved onto a general store for his toiletries before heading back to the hotel. There, he finally was able to shower and properly dress himself up for the day.

“I’m gonna have to leave this jacket with the rest of my clothes, huh…?” the young man murmured as he held his jacket up, gazing at the family crest on one of his jacket’s front sides. On one hand, his parents had always told him to wear it with pride so that others would know who he was and who he belonged. On the other hand, however, there were two negative reactions from two different strangers within a day. He was pretty sure he wasn’t supposed to be worried about it, but there was some sort of weird nagging sensation that he should ought be careful from now on.
Sonata warbled up at her trainer from the bed and tilted her head. She didn’t completely understand why he looked so conflicted over a piece of clothing. All she really understood from spending time with Beau and his family - or whatever actually consisted of ‘family’ - was that humans were really, really judgemental of how people wore their clothes. It didn’t really matter to her in the end, but it did when it influenced Beau to act in any manner that wasn’t his usual graceful demeanor.
Beau huffed a little, uncertain about the sudden decision to leave his jacket behind. He simply didn’t want to run into any troubles. It also didn’t help that he was beginning to remember why the reactions unsettled him so much, but he refused to let his mind dredge those memories back up. He had too much things he needed to do for today and he had to plan out on how he was going to reach Marei City just so he could figure out how much food he’d need for the trip.
Plenty of sad memories was not going to help him with his plans today.
He folded his half jacket and put it with his dirty clothes in a tiny laundry bag, zipping it closed. Afterwards, he organized his new supplies and made sure it was in a spot where the cleaning people could see it and not bother with it. He hoped they wouldn’t. He shook his head and left the building with his Pokemon tucked away and the star Pokemon resting in his arms.
The next target was that Spore T Goods store, and then… an electronics store. He did need to replace his phone for something better. The young man did his best to recall the directions as he walked around, getting himself lost every now and then again. He grumbled to himself, “Man, I’m horrible with directions…”
“Hey! There’s a Flabébé! Go Charmander!” a childish-sounding voice suddenly yelled out. A chirping warble soon followed the child’s voice.
“What?” Beau turned around to see a tiny white Pokemon nestled in the middle of a large orange flower dart right behind his leg. He glanced up to see a child with an orange reptilian Pokemon standing in front of him, its flaming tail swishing about.
“Excuse me, mister, can you please move?” the child asked, “I wanna fight and catch that Pokemon!”
Beau blinked and looked down to the Flabébé, who clearly looked like it’d rather not deal with the boy right now. The young trainer was very polite and he was thankful for that, but he wasn’t certain of the situation. He eventually shrugged after few moments of thinking and made to step away so he could resume his search for the shop.
“Mister! The Pokemon!” the child complained, “It’s sticking to you!”
“What?” the young man huffed and turned to look around for the Flabébé. Interestingly enough, it wasn’t there where he thought it’d be from the last time he saw it. It wasn’t anywhere as far as he was concerned. Maybe it just fled and this kid was trying to lie to him to try to get him into trouble? But then his statement just now wouldn’t make sense. ‘Sticking to him’?
The feeling of something prodding into the tightly wrapped portion of his hair caused him to whip his head around and a shrill cry suddenly erupted right behind his head. He stopped moving his head, but he reached up to feel what was going on. He felt the flower and then a slap on his fingertips, causing him to immediately withdraw his fingers. Was that where the Flabébé had gone?
“Flabébé?” he asked, getting a murmur as his reply as the Pokemon apparently worked its flower into his hair. “What are you doing? My hair is not the best place to stick your flower in it!”
Still, the little fairy worked its flower into his hair until it was nice and secure. It let out an appreciative warble and it drifted around Beau’s head to observe how its orange flower nicely contrasted against his blue dye. It was perfect! The Flabébé clapped its hands and smiled, feeling rather proud of itself for following this man around ever since he appeared out of that building earlier this morning.
Sonata warbled happily up at the Flabébé and waved up at it, who returned the wave with a chirp.
“... Flabébé, seriously.” Beau grumbled, “Come on, you’re a wild Pokemon. You aren’t supposed to interact with humans like this. And the kid wants you.”
The Flabébé shook its head and drifted back to its flower to cling onto the middle stalk.
“Um…” the young man sighed.
“It’s okay, mister! This happens sometimes. They even said so in school.” the child smiled, though he was obviously disappointed by the turn of events. “Good luck with your Pokemon!” With that, the child walked away with his Charmander by his side.
His Pokemon? No, this little fairy was obviously a wild Pokemon! Though, he didn’t really understand why this one was so insistent on having his hair be its vase. Weren’t wild Pokemon supposed to keep their distance from humans unless they trespassed specifically on their territory or nests? And yet, this little one approached him and even went so far to shove its flower into his hair.
“Okay, Flabébé, the boy is gone. You’re safe now. Go home!” Beau spoke up. A satisfied murmur answered him and he had to go to the nearest window to see what was happening. The Flabébé was clearly staying right on its flower and even went so far to peek at the window and wave at his reflection. He frowned at this and huffed. Either he’d have to rip the flower out of his hair or just leave it be, and ripping the flower out felt absolutely criminal of him to do so.
“Fine.” he grumbled and continued on to the store he had been looking around for. Within few minutes, he finally found it and observed its exterior. It definitely had some green or grass theme going on with how the window frames were painted green and the logo had a Breloom in it. Now he understood why it was called ‘Spore T Goods’ and he had to shake his head at it. A sharp cry reminded him that the Flabébé was right there.
“Sorry.” he apologized before stepping into the store. This time, there were couple of patrons in the building, so he wandered around for a bit and looked at various items before he settled onto the backpack section. He hummed softly as he looked over the wide variety of backpacks, frowning slightly at them all. Sure, some of them were shaped differently or came in different sizes, but did people really need a huge selection of backpacks?
“Excuse me? Do you need any help?” a voice spoke up, snapping him out of his thoughts.
“Ah, yes.” Beau nodded, glancing over to the man who spoke to him. From what he could tell, this man was similarly dressed like the lady in Up Shirt Creek: a practical outfit with a vest and a pair of boots on. He proceeded to explain that he was new to all of this traveling goods and didn’t know where to even begin with backpacks.

“Hm… your backpack really depends on what you’re packing for the journey.” the worker explained as he gestured to the two differently sized backpacks, glancing up once to the orange flower sitting against the back of his head, “The smaller your backpack is, the less items you’ll need, so it’s perfect for a short hike or a quick trip into forests or mountains near where you live or staying at for some time. The bigger it is, the more items you can pack, which is ideal for longer journeys. Now, the major question is, what kind of gear are you looking to carry with you at all the times?”
“Does it matter…?” the young man mumbled as he browsed the larger backpacks.
The Flabébé tilted its head as it listened to the two men talk about… About whatever it was. It didn’t really understand the technical terms being thrown about and yawned a little. It could explore the building if it wanted to, but it didn’t want to risk enticing some random human into capturing it, especially not when it chose a human for itself. It decided it’d nap instead and closed its eyes while curling up on its flower, letting the drone of humans words lull it into sleep. It’d be a nice peaceful nap anyways for once.
“It does!” the worker nodded, “The less weight you can carry, the easier it’ll be on your back and stamina. If you’re new to this stuff, it’ll be smart to carry small amount of weight at first to build up your endurance and stamina before you can add on any additional gears. Nothing’s worse than an exhausted hiker who can’t even carry their own backpack because they packed too much.”
“Oh, hm… If I remember right, the lady over at Up Shirt Creek said I’d need a sleeping bag and something over my head while I sleep?” he mentioned, “and first-aid kit and other stuff.”
The worker hummed a little as he nodded before he spoke up, “Yeah, those are the standard stuff. Are you looking for a tent or a hammock?”
Beau looked at him at his question, his eyes wide. A hammock? People actually camped out with a hammock?
The worker chuckled at his expression. “Yeah, every new traveler are like that. It’s a matter of preference, though. A tent is more private but takes a little longer to set up while a hammock is more quicker to set up, but lacks the privacy and you’d need a tarp over it to keep you safe from the rain and any other weather conditions.”
“Doesn’t the tent need more stuff?” Beau pointed out, “Like, how is it gonna stay on the ground if it’s windy outside?”
“Well, it’s not that much.” the worker explained with a shake of his head, “Stakes will be your best friend for that and, to be honest, if you can replace the stakes with better one and get rid of the factory ones, you’ll be carrying a lighter load because of it.”
The young man hummed softly as he considered his options. “So…” he slowly began, “If I go with a tent and a bunch of better stakes, a sleeping bag, first-aid kit, things like that, should I go with these large backpacks?”
“Definitely,” the other man replied, “But since you’re a first timer, I’d go with this backpack.” He pulled a backpack that seemed to be in the middle between small and large backpacks. “Like I said before, you’d want to avoid packing too much because you’re new to this. When you’ve gotten better at carrying your things around without needing to stop every so often, you can upgrade to the larger ones and add more weight.”
“And this is fine for one-person traveler?” the young man asked. “What about the tent and sleeping bag?”
The worker chuckled at that and showed Beau where items went, even going so far to explain how to properly pack the backpack with necessary items. It was absolutely vital, he stressed, that he brought only the necessary items and keep the unnecessary items at home. Afterwards, the employee handed the backpack with the assurance that it was an Edge Tech backpack and led him around, heavily recommending various essential items and some extra clothing gear, like boots.
An hour later, he was finally done shopping in Spore T Goods, and he was grateful towards the employees for allowing him to pack his purchases in his blue and grey backpack. He stepped out of the building and made his way towards the same hotel. A sleepy squeak drew his attention, though he didn’t bother trying to look around for the source.
“Oh, did you fall asleep?” Beau asked. “That must’ve been so boring for you.”
The Flabébé yawned widely and rubbed its eyes before crawling onto Beau’s head, clinging onto his hair all the while. She blinked as the human brought up his fingers towards it and reached out to latch onto one of his fingers.
“Seriously, though…” he sighed as he brought his hand down to properly look at the Flabébé, “Why do you even want to come with me? Why even me? I’m not interested in obtaining any more Pokemon until I have a dragon myself.”
The little fairy waved her hand and gestured, as if she wanted to grab something on him, so he obliged her. He brought her closer and closer to his face until she grabbed onto a section of his hair and rubbed her cheek against it. Sure, the colored hair didn’t smell of nature, but it was so colorful! It was what attracted her to this particular human.
“You like my hair?” Beau scoffed. “Seriously…” he rolled his eyes when he got a squeak in reply. That had to mean a yes. Were some of the wild Pokemon this careless? He could understand that line of logic if it was young, but he didn’t know if it really was!
“Hey, are you like, less than five years old?” he asked once he was able to withdraw his hand and the Flabébé away from his hair.
The tiny thing shook its head.
“.... More than five years old?”
It nodded.
Beau slowly nodded as well, unsure on what to think about that. It was definitely old enough to know better, but it still carelessly approached him. “You really should know better.” he grumbled.
That made the Flabébé giggle and nod. It knew it really should know better, but the human’s hair was so beautiful and strongly appealed to it. If it couldn’t stay as a wild Pokemon, then it wouldn’t mind being this particular human’s Pokemon. All it needed to do after that was to start dressing his hair up with flowers! It honestly looked forward to that.
“Well, if you like my hair,” the young man started, “Does that mean you’re going to stick around? Do you even realize what that means?”
The tiny fairy nodded and chirped up at him. It fully understood exactly what it was getting into just by interacting with humans. Though, it was grateful that the colorful human was also one with a kind heart, even if he seemed to judge everyone as he walked.
“All right.” he sighed, “I guess I can let everyone scope you out first before I catch you.”
Before the tiny Pokemon could question that, Beau reached the hotel and went straight to his room to put his things up. It had to move over to its flower so to allow the human put his things down. Right after that, though, he came right back out and onto the sidewalks again. This time, he had a plan in mind and it involved a certain electronics store he spotted on his way to Spore T Goods.
Ex-Static Shopping.

Beau didn’t really bother with the appearances of the store this time around. He just wanted to get his phone upgraded and get something to eat for lunch before he needed to keep going with his shopping. There weren’t that much left to shop for at this point so he was eager to be done with all of this. He stepped into the cool building and glanced around, spotting the phone and tablet section. This time, it was essential he didn’t try buying top-of-the-line stuff since he didn’t want to flaunt his money and potentially cause anyone to question about his wealth.
“Welcome to Ex-Static Shopping, sir!” yet another employee greeted him, eyeing the orange flower, “How may I help you?”
The young man just now realized how odd it must look to have a Flabébé’s flower stuck into his hair. He’d have to ignore the looks, though it did explain the other looks very well. Sadly enough, it wasn’t really up to him to try to get rid of it since he was certain the tiny fairy would do what it could to deter him.
“I’m in need of upgrading my phone.” he admitted, watching the little Pokemon drift over to the glass case and following it. “It’s… It’s sort of old.” He tugged his phone out and handed it to the lady so she could look it over.
“Ooh, yeah, it’s not old-old, but in the tech world, it’s definitely getting on its years.” she confirmed, “So what are you looking for, sir? I’m sure we can narrow down your choices to make it easy on you if you know what you want in your phone.”
Beau hummed in thought as he lightly poked the Flabébé and watched it poke his fingernail. “Yeah, I want it to be a 4G, if that’s possible.” he spoke up, “It would be nice if I could have internet via 4G instead of relying on the buildings’ free wifi. Also, it needs to have space in the phone. Who knows, maybe I’ll take pictures or download apps or something.”
“Are you on budget, sir?” she asked, clicking away on a nearby computer. It was probably helping her narrow down the results.
“Yes, ma’am. As much as I’d like to afford the latest, it’s too expensive for me.” he explained, hating how he was now lying about his wealth. He shouldn’t have to hide behind a lie, but he hated how he easily got two bad reactions from uttering his family name. He didn’t want to see any more of that.
“Hmm… This way, please.” the employee spoke up after a minute of silence.
Beau gently lifted the Flabébé up into his hand before he hurriedly followed behind the lady. The tiny fairy wrapped itself around one of his fingers and glanced at boxes. There were so many and they all were within another box!
“These phones are on sale and they’re still pretty good.” the lady gestured to few boxes with their price tags marked with a red tag and huge black ‘sale’ printed on them. “They’re still getting updates and this one phone lets you add a microSD card on top of what’s in it.”
Beau glanced to the particular phone the lady pointed out and noted it was another Edge Tech technology. Still, their products were pretty good and the phone was clearly labeled as a seven. He requested for some time to mull over his choices, though he did ask about the microSD cards. The lady pointed out that the cards were in a secure cases, just like their phones. It was a necessary security feature, after all.
Once the lady left him alone, Beau mulled over the two phones that were on sale that greatly appealed to him with the internet/phone company he liked. He knew he had to keep up with his appearance of being on budget and acted as if he was torn between his choices. As he spent his time staring at the small print on 6 and 7 Edge Tech phones, a question came creeping into his mind.
Why did this Flabébé come to him?
He knew it was because it was attracted to his hair, but it was old enough to know better. So why exactly did it pick him? His hair color couldn’t have seriously been that real reason. It was too vain, too weird, too random for a wild Pokemon’s reason to approach a human. He wanted to ask the Flabébé, but it’d have to be done outside. With that in mind, he quickly picked a 7 Edge Tech phone and a top-up card.
“Sir, I forgot to mention something.” the lady spoke up, “If you buy an Edge Tech product, you can also buy another one of their products for half of its price.”
“Really?” Beau asked, glancing over to the tablets and spotting couple of them on sale. “What if I wanted to buy one of those tablets on sale?”
“They’re part of the sale, sir.” she answered.
Beau nodded and walked over to the tablet section, bringing the Flabébé up to its flower so he’d have a free hand.
The tiny Pokemon squeaked in slight protest, but when it realized why he wanted it to sit on its flower, it obliged readily. Though, it did crawl its way on top of the human’s head to watch him decide which one of those boxes would come with him.
He looked over the ones that were on the sale and pondered on how to go about this. He supposed for someone who was on a budget, this was probably the best thing that could happen to them. He looked over the specs of each on-sale tablet before deciding on one that seemed to be decent and robust. Or at least he thought so. Larger numbers on the specs meant it was better right?
He looked up to the price-tag and frowned. It was at least several hundreds bucks compared to his phone. He wasn’t sure at all, but he figured no commoner would attempt to pay for this unless they were saving their money up for this sale, and he was trying to hide his wealth. He wrestled a bit with himself until he finally gave in to taking the one he deemed to be useful to him.
“Oh, a good choice, sir.” the employee commented as he came back to her to pay for his items. “Would you like a warranty plan on both of your devices? I highly recommend it in case if a Pokemon manage to break it and you need a replacement as soon as possible.”
“Um, how much is it?” Beau asked and saw the prices for each year. While they weren’t much, he loathed the prices. “I’ll go with the one-year plan.” he decided.
“That’s the popular plan.” the lady chuckled and began to ring them up. Once she was done, Beau quickly paid for his items, thanked her, and left the store.
“Flabébé, we need to talk.” the young man sighed.
Uh-oh, what did it do now? The tiny fairy warbled before drifting down to his outstretched hand, peering up to his thoughtful expression.
“You’re a wild Pokemon.” It was a simple statement.
The Flabébé nodded its head with a happy chirp. Indeed, it was, but it’d be caught soon and it was fine with that!
“You know better than to approach a human, right?”
The tiny one nodded once again, but it felt uncertainty grow. What was the human getting at?
“So you wouldn’t have approached me unless you were forced or had no choice.”
It swallowed. This time, it didn’t nod since Beau had struck true.
“Where are your kind?”
The Flabébé warbled with confusion etched on its expression. It began to gesture wildly to the plants lining the sidewalks and various storefronts. Was this human really stupid or was he blind?
Beau look up and, for the first time since he came in the town, actually looked at the surrounding. While there were plenty of trees here and there to provide plenty of shade to the visitors and locals alike, there were also a good bit of flowering plants all over the place. Shrubs of colorful flowers lined the walkways while large pots close to the buildings held more exotic flowers.
If he narrowed his eyes and focused hard enough, he could see several other Flabébés floating around the shrubs. It was actually quite hard to see them at a distance, but their flowers gave their positions away when they moved around. Red, yellow, orange, and blue flowers belonging to Flabébé floated around. He could’ve sworn he saw a white flower with a Flabébé floating around, but he blinked and it wasn’t there anymore.
“Huh… It’s going to get cold soon…” Beau mused, glancing down to the tiny Pokemon in his hand.
The Flabébé nodded and motioned that they were gathering… something.
“You’re collecting something…” the young man said. “Something from the flowers. Pollen? But you aren’t exactly the right kind of Pokemon to do that.”
The tiny fairy shook its head and gestured once again. It wasn’t pollen!
“Hm… Oh, do flowers have nectars?”
It nodded its head and chirped happily. He finally got it!
“Oh, I see, so your kind are collecting nectar. That would help when winter comes.” Beau nodded but looked back at the tiny fairy, “But you haven’t answered me about one thing. Were you forced or had no choice in picking me?”
The Flabébé deflated at that question and nodded with a sigh. It sort of was if it had to be honest. That little boy would’ve been fine if he approached it himself. However, that wasn’t what happened. It didn’t know how to even explain what happened to it to this man when there was an unmovable language barrier between them. If only it could actually speak the human language, then perhaps…
“Well, you’re safe now, I think, and you can go back to your… family? Flock? Patch? Something.” Beau shrugged, “I mean, I’m not really interested in taking a wild Pokemon right out of their homes if that’s not what they really want.”
The Flabébé looked up at the human and shook its head. While it seemed like the coast was clear, it knew it wasn’t. That boy’s guardian surely must be lurking around, waiting for the right moment to try to force it to fight against that scary Charmander. As far as it was concerned, it was safe with the man since that boy left with no fight and that girl hadn’t appeared again since. It was honestly afraid that if it left him to rejoin its patch, it’d be found.
“Oh, c’mon, please don’t tell me my hair color is seriously the reason.”
It winced at that. It did honestly, genuinely like his hair color! So it was a perfect thing to use as a lie because it had a genuine truth behind it. However, it realized it was important to be honest now or risk being left behind and at the mercy of that boy’s guardian. It slowly shook its head in response.
“No?” Beau blinked. “... Something’s wrong here. You’re definitely forced to stick with me. Hm… Maybe if you could explain everything to my team, they could help me figure it out. More heads and all that, I suppose.”
The Flabébé nodded and gestured to be let back on its flower. Thankfully, he was willing to do so and it was soon curled up around its flower’s stalk. It was too nervous to simply nap again so it opted to keep a lookout behind the man, afraid that boy’s guardian would come out.
However, she never appeared the whole time, not even when Beau popped back out of the hotel after stuffing his electronics in his new backpack with a bit of struggle on his part. Perhaps, that strange human wouldn’t come out after all. The Flabébé hoped feverently that was the case right now. Its belief grew stronger as nothing else happened as the man picked out a restaurant to eat with his Pokemon.

“Who are you?” Sonata warbled after swallowing her bite of berries.
“I’m a Flabébé. I don’t have a given name, but I am called Joyweed within my patch.” the Flabébé answered with a small smile.
“A… Fab..” Sonata struggled to pronounce the tiny fairy’s species name.
“Flabébé.” Cantata chirped, making sure to stress on each pronunciation section of the name until the Cleffa was able to say it properly. She looked over to the tiny fairy daintily eating her own pieces of berries. “I’m Cantata and this little one is Sonata.” the Pidgey introduced them both, “And Galliard is the blue Electrike down there.”
The Flabébé glanced down to the dog currently eating his dish of lunch and waved at him once he looked up. It got a snort and a nod in return since there wasn’t much else he could do to properly greet it.
“So, if you don’t mind, Joyweed, what made Beau catch you so suddenly?” the bird asked.
“Ah… I’m still wild. He hasn’t caught me yet, and… he seems to be rather reluctant to do so, which is quite strange but refreshing.” the tiny fairy explained, swallowing down its bite of a berry piece. “I… ah, tried to trick him into accepting me wordlessly because I was being pursued by humans.”
“Oh, that boy!” Sonata chirped, “The one with the weird fire thing.”
“Fire thing…?” Cantata questioned while the Flabébé giggled at that.
“She means Charmander.” the tiny fairy explained once its giggles subsuided. “But… yes, I was being chased by that boy and his guardian.” it sighed. “Now, it’s not so much of an issue for me to be caught by humans because it’s a common knowledge in the Pokemon world that humans seek Pokemon to obtain for their own reasoning or purposes.”
“But this boy was a problem.” Cantata spoke up, catching on.
“Yes… Though, he himself is not the root of the problem. The boy himself seems to be a sweet little boy who tries his best. It’s his guardian that’s the problem. It’s a woman, though she is not as tall as your trainer.” The Flabébé sighed once more, a frown settling on its face. “Because the boy saw me and wanted me to be his very first capture, the lady scared my patch away before I realized it and cornered me and manipulated the boy into fighting me with his Charmander.”
“Wait!” Sonata spoke up, “You mean his second capture! Because he has that… Charmander!”
Both the Pidgey and Flabébé stared at the Cleffa before the tiny fairy realized what she meant. It shook its head and explained, “No, that Pokemon was a gift to the boy. This town is a popular place for new trainers to get their gifted Pokemon from a very special person outside the town.”
“Oh…” Sonata murmured and nodded. OKay, that kinda made sense. “Why can’t people catch their own first Pokemon?” she asked, tilting her head.
This time, it was Cantata who responded. “Because some people just don’t have the sense to be decent to a wild Pokemon. Or they’re too scared to approach one without a Pokemon to ensure their safety. Some of the smarter humans don’t dare to go into any dangerous territories without a Pokemon who can handle the Pokemon in charge. I could tell you all about that, but maybe when we aren’t so busy being stuck in the balls.”
Sonata nodded in agreement and to show that she understood all of that. It made perfect sense to her.
“So… What’s the problem with the boy and his guardian? I understand she basically forced you into a battle with the boy’s Charmander, but…” the Pidgey tilted her head as she spoke.
“It’s the fact that she manipulated everything to force me and her young into a battle. It wasn’t by choice. The boy didn’t even walk up to me and battled me properly or even to try to talk to me. He chose to tell his guardian and she did everything wrong, so I didn’t want to go with the boy if I were to suffer in such a presence like her.” The Flabébé shook its head and continued, “So I fled from that battle and rode the winds to keep away from them both. I eventually saw your trainer and followed him around until I saw them again.”
“Oh! That was when you stuck your flower into Beau’s hair!” the Cleffa pointed out, much to the tiny fairy’s amusement.
“Wait, is that what it is?” Cantata glanced up to Beau to stare pointedly at the orange petals she could see.
“Yes. That’s my fairy flower.” the Flabébé confirmed with a giggle.
“So, you’ve basically pushed yourself onto Beau.” Galliard’s voice interrupted the conversation. A grunt was heard and the blue dog’s head appeared as he settled onto the chair. “I understand you needed protection, but aren’t they gone now?”
“Well… I’m worried they’ll appear again when I’m not expecting them.” the tiny fairy murmured. “I just have a horrible feeling they’ll pop up again, but so far they haven’t. If I may, I’d like to stay with Beau for a while longer until they lose interest in me.”
“I don’t mean to be rude, but what makes you so special to them?” the blue dog questioned.
“Galliard!” Cantata tweeted sharply at him, which he returned with a frown.
“It’s okay. It is odd that the pair wants me and not the white Flabébés since they’re more rarer than I am.” the tiny fairy agreed with the dog’s question. “I think it’s just because the boy saw specifically me and wanted me so the guardian won’t stop until he fights and captures me. Though I worry her methods will be more… Abusive than the boy would’ve liked it. I have a feeling that if I escape the boy’s poke ball, she will do something to make me stay in it to grant the boy’s wish.”
“Seriously-” both the bird and dog gaped at the tiny Pokemon.
“But…” Sonata interrupted, “The boy didn’t look like he’d hurt you. I didn’t even sense anything bad from him.”
“Yes, the boy is not the problem.” the Flabébé nodded, “As I’ve said, he is not the root of the problem. His guardian is. If she wasn’t there with him and he found his courage to approach me, I would have gladly gone with him with no fights involved, period. But...”
“But she was there and she forced you into a battle because the boy asked her…” Cantata sighed softly, “And you’re worried she’s still around so you’re sticking with Beau until they go away.”
“Exactly.” it smiled softly as it continued, “Though, I wouldn’t mind joining this team. Your trainer is a kind one and all three of you seem like you’re fine with me.”
“Hrm, if you want to come along…” Cantata huffed, “You’ll have to make a huge deal out of it until he understands you want to come along. I had to make a racket for few minutes before he realized I wanted in his team.”
“Hm… I’ll figure out how to make it clear to him about my desires, then. Thank you for warning me.” The Flabébé smiled and glanced up as Beau spoke up, speaking to the waiter about his pay.
After a while of waiting, Beau was able to pay for his food, returned everyone to their balls, and lifted the tiny fairy back up to its flower. He looked over his table to make sure he hadn’t forgotten anything and quietly left the building. Once he was few steps away from the stairs, he pulled his phone out to check the time and began to try to figure out what to do. He had bought the bulk of the list he needed to get for the journey so all that was left was the food and Pokemon-related items.
“Hey, you prick!”

The Flabébé’s happiness and hopes were promptly dashed as it saw the familiar girl clad in a tank top and shorts storm up to it. Thankfully, she didn’t get to try to grab it due to Beau quickly turning around in time to push her arms off him. A little shriek of terror still escaped the tiny Pokemon’s mouth, though.
“What the f-” he started, quickly biting his tongue to keep his curses down, “What are you doing?!”
“Give me that Flabébé, idiot!” the girl snarled at him, “You aren’t supposed to steal people’s Pokemon!”
Beau narrowed his eyes as he realized this teenager was the reason the Flabébé felt forced to stay with him. “The last time I checked, a wild Pokemon doesn’t belong to anyone!” he spat back, “And this Flabébé is staying with me. It even decided that itself.”
“Bullshit! We saw it first, so we get it first! That Flabébé is our by right and it doesn’t have a say in it!” the girl declared, looking as if she’d sooner punch him and grab the Pokemon than to try to win this verbal match.
Beau could feel the bystanders’ eyes on the pair, so he backed up a step to show that he was not neither buying her words nor willing to be aggressive towards a young lady. “A Pokemon can think and make decision for itself.” he growled, “So if it wants to come with me, it can very well do that much. I won’t stop it and you don’t have the say in this.”
“Are you kidding me?” she questioned with a mask of disgust on her face, “It’s just a Pokemon. We make the choices for it, and I decided it’s going to be my brother’s Pokemon. You will hand it over or this will get ugly.”
“What’s so important about this particular Flabébé?!” Beau questioned loudly and proceeded to gesture to other Flabébés in the shrubs, “There are others in there! I can see more orange ones over there!”
“My brother wants that one you’ve got so he will get it!” the girl declared, “Hand. It. Over!”
“I refuse!”
“Sammy!” the boy cried out as he ran to her side from somewhere, probably from the shadows or whatever. “Stop it! I told you it’s fine! Stop trying to force it to fight me!”
“You what?!” Beau demanded, “You forced an unwilling wild Pokemon to fight?! What is wrong with you?! Let your brother pick his fights!” Now he understood the severity of the Flabébé’s situation. This girl was clearly not a good trainer if she was like this.
“Stay out of this, Kyle!” Sammy snarled and practically shoved him behind her, as if that’d force the boy to quiet down, “And he needs to learn fighting is the only way!”
“It’s not always important to fight!” Beau bit back, “Pokemon like this Flabébé don’t need to fight to be won over!”
“What do you know about Pokemon? You don’t even get that Flabébé belongs to my bro!” she shouted at the older man, “Now return it and piss off!”
“I refuse.” Beau repeated, “This Flabébé doesn’t even want to go to you or to your brother and that’s the end of this argument. I’m done with this. Good day.”
“Oh, no, you don’t.” Sammy growled as she yanked a Great Ball off her belt. “Nobody gets away with stealing my bro’s Pokemon!”
Beau glared at the young girl as he yanked Galliard’s ball off his belt in response. He didn’t want to fight in such a town like this, but if he had to, he’d do so to protect the Flabébé from the obviously selfish trainer. He could hear the bystanders scrambling to get away from the impending battle.
Suddenly, a deep roaring bark echoed through the street and Sammy’s eyes were lit with surprise as she glanced behind her.
“Shit!” Sammy hissed and grabbed Kyle’s shirt, running off with him barely keeping up with her pace.
“Sammy, stop, slow down!” the boy’s cries echoed from where they disappeared off into.
“Huh, what’s going on?” Beau glanced around, suddenly finding the area to be almost empty. Wasn’t it full of bystanders just seconds ago?
An Arcanine suddenly appeared into the area with two uniformed police officers and the pair slid off the large majestic dog. One of the two cops immediately went up to the restaurant’s manager to get the details while the other one approached Beau with a stony face.
Now he realized why so many people just disappeared.
“What’s going on here?” the cop asked, sizing him up and the ball still in his hand.
“Um-” Beau practically squeaked.
“I’m glad you’re here, Officer,” a voice sounded from nearby. Beau glanced up to see a patron from the restaurant walking up to the pair, and noticed a tiny mouse sitting contently on the person’s cap. “This young man was almost the victim of a crime.”
The young man vaguely noted that she was smartly dressed, perhaps indicating of her rich or lavish status. He wasn’t sure but maybe the officer noted as such as well since he didn’t say anything to her. A pleasant smile was on her lips and she discreetly winked at Beau as if that was some kind of a signal to him.
“A teenager tried to steal his companion, the Flabébé.”
It was safe to say that Beau was frazzled enough to just nod along with the new stranger’s words. It was weird that someone would suddenly protect him, but he wasn’t about to toss away his fortune. Unfortunately, he had to speak as the cop pressed on.
“The victim of a crime, huh?” The cop spared Beau a glance before he focused on the newcomer with the mouse on her head. “We got a report of two people disrupting the peace in this area. Is your claim what escalated from this report?”
The woman’s smile never wavered as the officer explained what was reported.
“Y- yes sir.” the young man quickly nodded. His voice faltered on him as he attempted to speak more, and he attempted to speak. He soon realized that he was simply too panicked to be able to speak rationally.
Once Beau was done replying what he could manage to the officer’s questions, the woman stepped forward to place a reassuring hand on his shoulder.
The young man glanced over to the woman yet again when he felt a hand on his shoulder and studied her for a brief moment.
“I watched it start to finish,” the woman announced as her Dedenne peered curiously at the fellow Fairy Pokemon. While the mouse raised a paw and chattered out a greeting, the blonde trainer smoothly moved around Beau to stand in front of him. “Clearly he needs a moment to calm, and who can blame him when he nearly lost his Pokemon to a couple of thieves?” she pointed this fact out.
The Flabébé glanced up to the Dedenne situated on the woman’s head and sent back a shaky wave and a soft, panic-ridden greeting while the young man allowed the woman to take care of the situation for him. Her words were true on how he felt and looked at the moment. He was certain he looked like he needed a moment or hours to calm himself down long enough to be able to talk rationally.
The woman thoughtfully gestured in the direction the officers came from and tilted her head just a bit as her smile softened. “How about I follow you and your partner to the station so we can exchange details there?” she asked.
“Hm… All right.” the cop reluctantly agreed, “But I need this young man’s number first before we go to the station.”
“O- oh, I can write it down for you.” Beau piped up and gestured with his occupied hand before he realized he hadn’t unclenched Galliard’s ball. He hastily put it back on his belt, wiped the sweat off on his shirt, and began to shakily jot down his number and name on an offered notepad and pen the cop was generous enough to give.
“Thank you, Mr…” the officer trailed off as he narrowed his eyes at the name on the paper. He nodded once and directed the woman to follow him and his partner back to the station. The large dog was returned to its ball once the second cop was done obtaining the details from the manager.
Now, it was nothing but an eerie calm in the vicinity as the manager glared at Beau and sharply waved her arms to make it a point for him to get going. He nodded and turned around to leave, his heart pounding in his chest. He was definitely never going back to that place, that much was for sure. Not that he was particularly upset about it. He had too much worries on his mind now.
He needed to capture this poor Flabébé now if he wanted to keep it safe from the clearly irresponsible and dangerous girl. It took him several moments before he realized just how selfish his thoughts sounded. Did the Flabébé seriously want to come with him? He’d have to ask it first, but it was clear both of them were not ready for some logical conversation.
Some long shopping was required to take the pair’s minds off and nothing topped the grocery shopping.

Beau was glad he was right about the food shopping. Minutes practically bled away as he slowly went around the aisles and looked over the food choices that seemed to be interesting to him. As he picked up various food boxes, he made small talk about it to the Flabébé to help take its mind off the event. At first, it didn’t really work since the poor thing was still horribly shaken up, but it gradually became involved as time flew by.
By the time they were done shopping, the young man’s cart didn’t have much in it beyond boxes of crackers, granola bars, jars of nuts, and various non-perishable food, plenty of food for his Pokemon to consume, and a hefty box of snack bags to properly separate the snacks into manageable chunks so he wouldn’t have to suffer carrying boxes around. He soon paid for all of that and carried the several bags back to the hotel. Once again, like he had been doing for the entire day, he came right back out and made a beeline towards the Pokemon Mart to obtain his medicines.
The Flabébé was more active this time around, even going so far to hover close to his hand and chirped at various medicines. Beau was more than happy enough to explain what they did, slowly picking out several potions, antidotes, and paralyze heals to fill his handbasket. He went around the small building, looking at various other items and commenting on them when the tiny fairy questioned about it. It took a while before he was able to get over to the counter to get his items checked.
“Sir, do you need any pokeballs?” the bored-looking employee asked in an extremely deadpan tone.
“I think I still have one left.” Beau answered, frowning at him. Was it the usual for Pokemon Mart employees to suddenly ask about the poke balls?
“One pokeball.” the teenager repeated, “If you don’t mind, you should totally buy some more. One pokeball isn’t gonna be enough, y’know.”
The young man narrowed his eyes at the teenager and began to take out his personal items out of his fanny pack to prove him wrong. However, even though he had taken his items out, he could not find any remaining pokeballs. Did he actually use them all up on Galliard and Cantata? But that only required two-
That was all he had.
Beau sighed softly as he packed his personal stuff back into the fanny pack and quietly requested for more pokeballs.
The employee scanned each item he had in the basket and put the medicines in one bag while the pokeballs went into a smaller bag. “Would you like to enter the giveaway? It’ll take like, couple of seconds to see if you won anything or not.”
“Eh…” Beau shrugged, but the Flabébé chirped loudly, prodding the back of his head. He explained what a giveaway was to the Pokemon and it chirped again, lightly tugging on his hair. Obviously, it wanted him to try it out.
“Yeah, sure, why not.” the young man nodded.
Just like the employee said, it only took him several seconds before a receipt was spat out. “Congrats, sir. You’ve obtained two Wingull Stop tickets, so if you got a girlfriend, you can totally take her out to like… Balsa Island. Perfect for some romance.”
“Why Balsa Island, specifically?” Beau asked, growing slightly concerned about the employee’s deadpan tone.
“Oh, you haven’t heard? The thing over there is all the rage.” the teenager yawned, “Apparently some lucky dudes went and brought back some new Pokemon from some region. Alala or whatever, I dunno. The point is, new Pokemon means more chances to woo your girlfriend. Or something.”
Did the employee want a girlfriend?
“Oh… I see, so where’s the tickets?” the young man asked instead of outright asking the teenager what seemed to be an extremely personal question.
“Here you go, sir.” the teenager handed the receipt, “Just redeem it at any Wingull Stop locations and they’ll give you the two tickets you won. It got a limited time, though, so don’t dilly-dally.”
“Th… Thank you.” Beau nodded as he accepted the receipt and tried at a smile before he hurriedly exited the store with his items in hand.
Few hours flew by as Beau set up his new phone and tablet, figured out how to properly pack his backpack, split up the food he bought into manageable portions, and threw away all of the boxes and papers he didn’t need. Then the police called, so he wound up having to go over there and explain everything before he was allowed to leave the town. Due to how long that took, he ate out once more and headed back to the hotel room to take a shower.
“Ughh.” the young man groaned as he flopped onto the bed.
Sonata took this chance to let out an excited screech and flopped onto Beau before crawling her way up on his chest. She then sat down, drawing a cough out of him, and flopped again. It took her few minutes of wriggling around until she was comfortably curled close to his neck and peering over his neck to watch Galliard’s tail wag. With yet another screech, she darted off to try to flop onto the tail.
“Yeah, I should’ve let you guys out every now and then again, huh?” Beau sighed as he watched the Flabébé float around in the room with its flower, listening to it giggle at the Cleffa’s antics. “Flabébé?”
The tiny fairy warbled in response and lowered itself so the young man could properly see it.
“Why do you want to come with me?” he asked, “You’re safe now that the police knows who your pursuers are. There shouldn’t be any more problems.”
The Flabébé shook its head and warbled softly, placing its flower close to his head before petting his forehead. It was coming with them. It simply no longer felt safe in the town anymore, even if the pair was gone or banned from the town. Sure, it could probably wander off, but its patch was busy collecting nectar to try to prepare for the winter when everyone would be so tired and drowsy to do any more than short searches for berries. That wasn’t for few more months until they moved out of the town and it didn’t want to venture on its own in the wilderness.
“C’mon… You got a home, don’t you? Why do you want to leave it?”
The tiny fairy responded by hugging the Pidgey first, then the shiny Electrike, and finally, the Cleffa as the younger fairy Pokemon squealed in delight at that.
“They’re fine with you?”
All three Pokemon nodded at that.
“And you’re fine with them?”
The tiny fairy nodded and picked its flower up to drift down to his new backpack. It was a bit difficult to do so without the nature’s aid, but it managed a tendril of energy and dug through a certain side pocket to dig out a pokeball. It floated up where everyone could see it and the pokeball wrapped in its Vine Whip.
“Wait, what are you doing?”
The Flabébé smiled and placed a section of vine over the center, depressing it in the process. The ball immediately absorbed the tiny Pokemon and fell to the floor, leaving everyone but Sonata speechless.
“AH! She’s coming! She’s coming!!” the Cleffa gleefully screeched as she made her way off the bed to watch the ball shake. “Welcome to family, Fabehbeh!”
“... Well, that’s certainly one way to do it.” Galliard commented once he got over his shock.
“Y… Yeah, but that’s not what I told her…” Cantata mumbled.
Beau gaped at the ball and slowly shook himself out of his shock. Was that even normal among the wild Pokemon? Well… He supposed it was quite obvious the Flabébé wanted to come along. This thought was confirmed with a ding from the ball and yet another excited screech from Sonata.
“Beau! Beaubeaubeaubeau! Pick her! Pick the ball up!” Sonata babbled as she practically danced-stomped her way over to her trainer’s side, the ball in her tiny hands, “Name!” Afterwards, it was too much of an unintelligible babble as Sonata was too hyper now.
“Galliard, go wear her out, please. I need to name this Flabébé.” the young man requested, looking down concernedly at the excitable Cleffa and taking the ball from her. Thankfully, the blue dog was more than willing to do so, playing tag with the young fairy. He let out a sigh and powered on his tablet to figure out the name for the tiny fairy. As he did so, he let the Pokemon out.
“You really wowed us with that.” Cantata commented, to which the Flabébé softly giggled.
“It seemed like he wasn’t going to listen to reason.” she explained. “And what happened to Sonata? She’s so hyper now!”
“I think it’s because you got her so hyped since you’re coming with us now. And I guess you’re a fellow fairy Pokemon?” the Pidgey shrugged.
The Flabébé giggled once more, but she did apologize for that. The Pidgey shrugged again and brushed it off as it not being seriously her fault.
“Adagio.” Beau spoke up, drawing the two Pokemon attention onto him. “That’s your name, Flabébé. Adagio.”
The tiny fairy chirped happily and bobbed in the air to show her happiness beyond what her voice could convey.
“Hey, wait, you should try to explain to him that it’s actually-”
“No, a Given name is different from the name given by a wild Pokemon’s family.” Adagio shook her head and smiled at Cantata. “I’d love to be able to explain, but it’d kill the mood, so later. Please.”
The Pidgey reluctantly nodded and looked over to the Cleffa chasing after the blue Electrike’s tail. With a quick excuse, the bird fluttered over to play with the star Pokemon. While they played for hours, Beau was busy making sure his gear was right where it was and had everything in the proper places so he could easily get to them. He was soon satisfied with the backpack and placed Adagio’s ball on the belt lying on the bedside table.
It took few hours before both Sonata and Cantata finally tuckered themselves out. Beau picked them both off the floor and placed them on the bed, ignoring their sleepy protests. He crawled into his side of the bed and laid down, mentally laying out a plan for tomorrow.
He’d leave Jujine Town, head over to… His thoughts wandered over to the Balsa thing the teenaged employee spoke about. Well, Damien could wait for a little while, couldn’t he? He was curious about what was going on over there. He’d stop at a Wingull Stop place, get his tickets, and go over there. Yep, sounded like a plan since all he’d do was to look at new Pokemon.
Beau closed his eyes and soon drifted off to sleep.
