| Welcome to the Lorelii Islands. We hope you enjoy your visit.
Lorelii used to be a war torn continent with fighting going back so long that no one even remembered the reasoning for it any more. A lone Shiftry is said to have changed everything, literally splitting the continent into the series of islands there are today and bringing peace to the region. Now that itch to fight is coming back, and it's time to start your journey. The League has only recently reached this collection of islands, and so have you. Catch, train, battle and conquer. Or set up a bakery by the sea. Become a Gym's janitor. Map, chart, explore and become the very best at whatever you want to do.

• General Rules •
Use the CTRL-F function to find something in particular.
Site Rules! • The most important rule is simple: we're all here to have fun, even the mods. Anyone actively making this site less fun for other users will be spoken to. Everyone deserves respect and politeness, even if you don't agree with them.
• Posts must be at least 200 words, or 500 for a solo. Ideally they should be longer than this, but this is the minimum, reserved for when you otherwise would have spent hours stuck staring at your monologue trying to figure out how to stretch it out.
• Don't invent your own writing rules! Quotes go in quotation marks, paragraphs are separated by two line breaks, and capital letters belong at the beginning of sentences. Don't make our eyes bleed. Your threads must always be in the past tense unless there's a stylistic reason why not. If you don't know what I mean by that, don't write in any other tense.
• Similarly - we're not a forum of professional writers, this is a hobby, but we all like writing so it would be nice if you were to be open to receiving constructive (only) criticism occasionally. It's important to all of us that the standard of posts remains fairly high because we are building a world together! Please don't take offence if people try to nudge your writing to be the best it can be.
• Be considerate of your thread partners. Never powerplay, not even a little. If you get permission to, say, have both of you fall into a trap in your post, it'd be preferable to write 'with permission' at the head of your post so your mod doesn't ding you. Don't take days to reply every time, and don't go on hiatus without letting people know. Their characters will be stuck there, that's not fair! Additionally, your Nidoran can take a punch, but it's not going to stagger to its feet again after taking Tyranitar's Hyperbeam. Don't take advantage of our lenient battle rules, they're meant to be freeing and fun.
• At the start of every thread please copy and paste your signature into spoiler tags so people (or just you) reading over old threads understand what was going on and what your party was. It's nice to see progress like that, too! Be overeager in reminding people to do this on the cbox if they've forgotten. We all forget sometimes.
• Have fun! That's an order.
Battle Rules So, you wanna learn how to rumble, kid? You came to the right place! This might get a bit lengthy, but it's for the good of all. You should at least skim through Simply put, if you roleplay it, it'll come. Describe you attack, battle tactics, command, signature pose, make a show of it! Be descriptive enough for your opponent to visualize what is going on. You should never, under any circumstance, decide what your opponent does or if the attack hits - That is for your opponent to decide (Within reason, of course). Levels in this site are a purely OOC concept. So your characters would never say 'yeah my Pidove is only level 8', he'd say, 'yeah my Pidove is still pretty weak!' In terms of battling, this means that you don't write what level your opponent is. You only write out how hard or easy it is to defeat them. Your mod will come and gauge how hard the battle was, taking into consideration the type effectiveness, and will assign each opponent you faced a level for you, and subsequently award you with the right amount of EXP! Let's have an example of a battle here using this 'story' or purely descriptive system. So Jason the Mareep and Plump the Munchlax are fighting Player 1: "Jason, give them one to remember! Fire the Thunderbolt!" Player 1 cried, and Jason's wool cracked with energy before firing off a powerful electrical discharge towards the enemy Player 2: "Oh no! Plump, use Metronome! Let's pray for the best!" Player 2 commanded as Plump put together his hands and waved his fingers, summoning a reflective barrier that took the attack power down. "Great! Now go and give them a Body Slam!" Hearing the command, Plump perked up, and charged with a determined expression towards the opponent, ready to slam into the Mareep Geddit? Try if you can to be a little more detailed than that, though we appreciate that sometimes it's hard to squeeze any more detail out, and can get tedious to describe and to read in the midst of a tense battle. After every battle, remember to post a spoiler tag using - Code:
-
[spoiler=Battle Details!Insert details in here[/spoiler]
to help keep track of what all has happened in the battle. Note: If you attack somebody in one post and they don't take the hit or dodge it in their next post, you can then go on to say whether the attack hit or missed. For example, if you order a Slash, and in their next post they say 'Pop tried to move out of the way, and when the Slash came he would attempt to counter it with a Bite', you can then go on to say 'The Slash connected with sickening accuracy, but the Bite then landed squarely on his forearm.' Again, godmoding and powerplaying in a way that takes advantage of this rule will not be met kindly ;3 Items: We're wary about this. Item battles can be interesting, but mostly they can be boring. We generally stick to itemless battling here, though held items are fine, and if you specify with the other person first then of course it's ok. Recovery moves: Similar to items in that it can make a battle boring. There is a limit to recovery moves, such as Softboiled and Recover, so the other person doesn't end up scratching their brain out in irritation. As you use it, the move will recover less and less of your HP until it does nothing at all. E.g. 1st time, half is recovered, 2nd time, a quarter, etc. Luck-based moves: This is pretty much all of them, but it varies. Almost every move can miss - your opponent decides if it hits them or not (though there is a limit on dodging for hax reasons). A lot of moves have possible secondary effects such as poisoning or paralysing. Again, your opponent should fairly decide the outcome of this. If your poor unsuspecting pokemon is smacked with Water Pulse and you're feeling indecisive, quickly flip a coin to decide whether they're confused or not. Or just choose yourself. Another luck-based move is something like Metronome. The most widely-used system is random number generators. You could go to http://serebii.net/attackdex-dp/or a similar site and randomly point at an attack, and use it, or maybe pick a random pokemon, close your eyes and point at its moveset. It doesn't really matter, as long as you don't magically use the strongest super-effective move every single time. No one is going to want to roleplay with you if you're annoying. Don't use more than two or maybe three attacks per post, or order long-term attacks such as 'Keep using Scratch until he faints'. This is not only a snooze fest and indication of very little creativity but it sort of puts the opponent in a bit of a corner. A boring corner. A borener, if you will. Also about the two attacks limit thing, as that may have confused some of you and left you on the floor begging for more answers. 'But you said you can't automatically hit the opponent!' I hear you cry, 'So how can you attack twice in a row?' Good question, smartypants. So it'd be something more like this: (What's that, don't like Plump and Jason? Alright, have new ones!) Trainer 1: "Pip, use Smokescreen and then use the cover to land your Flame Wheel attack!" Trainer 2: "Pop, don't let the smoke put you off - use Rollout in one place until you've made a dent in the ground to hide in ... then when he's above you use Water Gun straight at him! You'll know he's there when you feel the heat." Though obviously being the geniuses I now understand you to be, you will be much more inventive, clever and detailed than that. A battle can go on for as long as you want. Though I once again urge you to think about the emotional well-being of your roleplaying partner. They will get bored and/or irritated at some point if you keep taking attacks and not fainting. Be fair! Actually, that rule warrants a line of its own so I'll put it again. The Golden Battle Rule:BE FAIR!See, I even made it gold for you. Don't ever let it be said I don't spoil you.
Transport Notes Because the islands are obviously separate from one another, transport is an important topic.
On Lorelii the government has funded several 'Wingull stops'. These are little two-seater pods powered by a clever Wingull flock flight system. Just tell them which island you want to end up on and pay up! The Wingull are highly trained - there is no chance of them letting you onto an island if they decide you aren't strong enough for it.
Each Wingull flight costs 100 exp which can be confirmed before or after thread in profile altering.
Speaking of which - important note. Since some islands are inhabited by such strong wild pokemon, you will not be permitted to embark until your pokemon are strong enough, and strength is proven...by Gym Badges, of course!
So if you want to truly explore, get challenging.
Money! Money money money~
In Lorelii our current system is that we only really use an OOC form of money - this is Story EXP (see later posts for details). Story EXP is earned from each thread and is a number depending on your mod's take on the thread's story.
You can decide what to spend your Story EXP on (unlike Battle EXP which just goes to the pokemon that earned it in battle!) whether it be levelling up a pokemon as if it had battled, acquiring items, entering events and competitions and Super Dungeons (all info should be in the rest of this thread) and travelling more quickly around the region.
To clarify - if you want to evolve Pikachu into Raichu, you need a Thunderstone. Now, you must save up 350EXP to buy an evolution stone, by participating in a few threads and getting them graded. When you have saved up 350EXP you can now pick how you'll come across the Thunderstone - you have unlocked the item but your character doesn't yet have it.
To acquire an item you have bought OOC you can be creative. You can stumble across it any way you want. It can be delivered to you by the Pelipper Delivery Service, you can find it hidden in a tree trunk, you can steal it from a passerby or shop. Whatever you want.
So money does exist in Lorelii, but it is purely a story feature. You can use money to buy luxury food, hotels, etc., and you can also have your character buy a Thunderstone in a department store - but only if you have already bought the Thunderstone with your Story EXP.
As always let us know if you have questions or suggestions.
Guest Star Rule If you want your friend to come play with you for just one or two adventures, they don't need to make a profile. If they decide to stay, however, then they do!
Characters Meeting Your own characters can meet up, yes. They can exchange goods and services, but they can't make a massive habit of it because that is a bit of an advantage over others.
You can have your breeder meet your trainer and give one of her four Houndour eggs, and you can have the trainer return the favour by teaching her mama Houndoom a cool Move Tutor move.
Be respectful to other players by not abusing this rule, but in general it is allowed.
Shiny Pokemon and Other Oddities We love creativity here. As far as we are concerned, shiny pokemon are not THAT rare. If you looked for a couple of weeks you'd probably find one. I would say that instead of a 1 in 8000 chance of encountering a shiny, there is closer to a 1 in 50. Feel free to never meet one ever, or try to have a team of six shinies.
We also don't mind other odd colourations. Why would there only be one alternative to the normal pokemon colour? You might find a brindle Poochyena, a blue merle Absol, an Appaloosa Ponyta.
If you have dealings with scientists and other dodgy operations, you may even find a pokemon with a bionic augmentation, or even a type difference, or a physical deformity. These are all fine, however - you must earn them in your capture thread(s). You will also need to procure a sprite. Either make it yourself or ask on the cbox, it'll surely be snapped up by one of our rabidly helpful artists.
A pokemon who is super awesome mega powerful and special IS allowed, but only if it is treated as a roleplay quirk - no matter what, it'll be the levels and the known moves that dictates how it does in modded encounters such as Gym Battles and Dungeons.
7th Pet Pokemon Rule Here in Lorelii you are allowed to have your normal team of six, PLUS a seventh 'pet' pokemon, as we call it. Your seventh is more like your companion. He isn't in your official team which means that, unless you do some moving around, he can't battle in competitions, gyms, tournaments etc. He can however be utilised freely within RP.
Because of this rule, he is often allowed to be considered a little bit special. It is a little easier to teach your Pet to do unusual things, and he can be shown to be very strong or very fast, etc. However, if you do use him in an official match, he will be nerfed to his level.
If your companion can do weird stuff to NPCs, please remember to ask before using this power with a player character.
Note: Your companion pokemon can be a collection of pokemon. For example, a litter of baby Vulpix or a swarm of Combee. It can also be something like Plusle and Minun. This rule won't be taken advantage of, though, so no having eight companions because you're indecisive! That's what the farm and the lab are for.
On Open Threads
Any thread that has [Open] on their title is basically free for anyone to join, at any time. Open threads are always a fun opportunity for unplanned encounters and unexpected fun to happen, and some of the site's greatest adventures can go down on those beauties.
Of course, if too many people join things could get pretty confusing, so let's just get a couple things out of the way.
1- When three or more posters are taking part in a thread, there will be a time limit for the next post to happen. If one of the participants does not reply within 24 hours, the others are free to move on without him or her. It might sound kinda harsh, but this is in no way obligatory, and it's a precaution to stop threads to slowing to a crawl. Real life happens and we are all understanding of it, but ultimately it's for the best if one person's absence does not ruin it for everyone else.
2- A posting order should be in place, although that is not absolutely necessary, it is good to keep things orderly. If you are in a thread with three other people and you post once, wait until the other three post before posting again. (Something like 1-2-3-4, 1-2-3-4, so on)
3- Once a character is gone from the thread, you obviously don't need to wait for that poster to post again unless they are still controlling something important within the thread's story.
That's all, really. Also, remember that the more players a thread has the more confusing it can get. We won't stop you, but if a thread already has 4 posters it might be worth waiting until your next change unless you're all sure the action can be followed by everyone. Unplanned fun is always nice but communication still solves many problems. That's all for now
Collaborative Solos Wow, guys, it's a brand new way to write a thread! When was the last time this happened? FOREVER AGO?!
A collaborative solo is written almost exclusively in Google Docs, or another software that allows you to edit a document together. You write like you're writing a solo, pausing to allow the other person to interject, interrupt, answer with one-liners ... really it's a very fun and interesting way to write with your friends!
In terms of assessment, you will each gain 1/2 exactly of the length exp earned, but you will gain a full and equal amount of quality exp, which means that assuming your characters are the same class, you will get the same amount of story exp. The battle exp rules remain unchanged.
Give it a try sometime!
Flash Fiction Solos We’ve noticed a trend on the site towards the longer solo. Now, on one hand, we LOVE that our members like to write long stories and really earn every molecule in every new capture’s body … but on the other hand, we don’t want people to feel pressured on Lorelii! It shouldn’t become the idea that if you can’t write long, you shouldn’t write.
So together we’ve come up with the idea of the Flash Fiction solo, as our first attempt to ease some pressure when it comes to agonisingly long writing.
What constitutes FF?
Well, it needs to be under 2000 words total. That’s pretty much the only rule. It does need to be a solo, too. Generally it will have very little conflict, if any, which means battle exp will very rarely be earned. This sets up breeders and wanderers to earn that sweet story exp bonus.
Why should you do one?
Wonderful question! Well, to incentivise these short and sweet stories, we’re pumping up the potential story exp that can be earned from them. To earn the maximum story exp you should focus on things like description, tone, detail, and atmosphere. Dialogue can also be a fun way to earn those points. A Flash Fiction solo should really just be a snapshot into daily life. I’m looking forward to seeing lots of positive, silly and sweet moments in everyday trainer life, but I’m sure some of them may lean towards the sombre or really even just the neutral. This is your chance to earn points by slowing down and perhaps even literally taking time to smell the flowers.
The most compelling reason, probably, is that you stand to earn quite a lot of experience even though the length is very, very short. For this reason, however, you must have three non FF threads between each FF thread. You can have more, but they won’t be graded as such or the system will break down and there’ll be rioting on the streets.
Please put a note that you intend for your solo to be graded as Flash Fiction (or FF) when you ask for assessment!

• How This Site Works •
This site is freeform, which means that you don't need to wait for a moderator to play the role of the Game Master (GM) and control the world around you. You the writer are responsible for creating the universe around you.
To play, when you have a character you must start a thread, give it a name, and start exploring the area you have chosen. You can read the information about the area and look at the map to get inspiration.
At the start of every thread please copy and paste your signature into spoiler tags to give a snapshot of your current party!
Each solo thread must be an absolute minimum of 500 words, but I can't think of a way you'd ever achieve much writing little. The more you write, the more chances you get to hit more criteria for the mod assessing you, meaning more experience, items, and money.
A short transactional thread, of 500 words, during which your Mareep evolves into Flaaffy while you're walking and reading the map, and you look over with eyes brimming with pride and then find the next town...will earn you the absolute minimum from your mod.
A longer thread with engaging description that gets us to feel the salty spray of the sea on our faces, where Jason the Mareep has a quiet battle with an Ursaring while you comically misread your upside-down map and misconstrue his desperate bleating for fatigue, and then finally turn around to see that he has evolved, will earn you some pretty fair rewards.
Remember, we're all story chasers here. It's not just about the game, about levelling and evolving and fighting the Elite Four. In Lorelii it's about transporting yourself to a fictional world. Transport us too!
To earn maximum prizes from your mod the choices are endless. Maybe behind you as you struggle with the incorrect, counterfeit map, your Mareep uncovers a poaching ring and befriends a grisly old Scyther and together they solve the murder of the farmer nearby...
But ultimately you can do pretty much whatever you want!

• Levels, Experience, Evolution & More! •
Levelling Up So you've caught a Mareep and you've named it Jason, but you're still not happy? I guess you'll want to level it up. Levelling up is the way to make your pokemon stronger, faster, more intelligent, better at making tea; and it's one of the most important parts of being a pokemon Trainer! You can't defeat a Gym Leader with a rubbish pokemon, after all. So how do you level up? I'm literally about to tell you, please can you calm down. This is the easiest and most straightforward method, but note that there are other ways - take your pokemon somewhere where there will be other pokemon, first. Decide if you want to do a SOLO thread or a MULTI thread. The former you do on your own, the latter with one or more other member of the site. It's recommended to do a combination of these and also totally up to you. Let's say you picked a solo for ease. You go to a field with your Mareep and you look around for wild pokemon or you challenge the farmer nearby to a battle. Wild pokemon are easier to come by and probably easier to write about, and they are also easier to defeat in most circumstances because they haven't been trained. Trained pokemon tend to take longer RPs to defeat and are stronger and know more tactics, have a little more experience and logic etc. For this reason, they give out different amounts of EXP. This site runs on a level and experience system sort of similar to the games - at least in that it is capped at 100 and moves and evolutions happen at the right times. - Note:
-
We always use the most modern Pokedex found on Serebii or Bulbapedia. At the time of writing this is XY or ORAS - we tend to be interchangeable; your choice.
In a solo thread you control both actions. Yours and your pokemon's and the enemies. You should play it out like a story. It should have a beginning, a middle with conflict, and an end where it is resolved 'for now', or a cliffhanger that will continue in a different area. Unfinished threads will not be graded and rewarded by moderators unless in unusual circumstances. You will get experience whether you win or lose. This is a really important rule to remember, and one that is important to us as a site because we value the story over anything else. Sometimes the story really calls for you to suck, to lose, to fail, to succumb to conflict, and we don't want the call of EXP to derail your awkward and clumsy journeys! Experience comes in two different ways: - Story EXP
-
Story EXP is unusual so we'll start with this. At the end of your thread you will run off and find a moderator to evaluate it. One of the things they'll do is reward you for your story. That will include its structure, overcoming non-combat conflict (puzzles, NPCs, races, soliloquies..), length, intrigue, writing style, and more. This EXP will go to your character and can be spent on several different things, including converting directly into your pokemon's EXP. You don't have to choose right away. You can save up Story EXP in your character's profile.
Story EXP makes being a non-Trainer class more viable. With this system you don't need a battle in every thread to make progress.
- Battle EXP
-
And of course the EXP we all know and love. Battle EXP is the quickest way to level up. This is what you gain from good old-fashioned battling. The formula will be explained in more detail below. When you complete a thread containing combat, your participating pokemon are rewarded with experience, as always. Your moderator will gauge the level of difficulty from your post and reward each individual pokemon experience as deserved unless the level of your encounter has already been set through the Random Encounter Request System in which case the Moderator will you the already determined level. Battle EXP is always set with a specific formula regarding levels. Story EXP can be added on top of this number if your battle was fun to read, interesting, unusual, or anything else notable.
- Super Important Note
-
Your characters in game will not discuss levels. Levels are an OOC concept for the most part. This means that when you encounter an opponent you will simply write about it being easy or hard to defeat, or impossible. Your mod will then use its (yes, it) divine discretion to decide which level you were fighting against. With the addition of Story EXP it is possible for your pokemon to earn equal or more EXP from being defeated by a level 50 in a cool story than by sweeping three level 15s. In this way we hope to discourage feeling as though grinding is the only viable option. Stop! Example time.To clarify using everything we've learned. Jason zaps three Rattatas in quick succession. Your mod decides that this was very simple, so if Jason is level 10, they were probably level 2. Your Mareep gets 60EXP. Then out lumbers the farmer. You have a long engaging dialogue with him and then after a long and nailbitingly tense battle with his Starly, you manage to defeat him using a clever tactic involving the hay bales behind you! Your mod decides, that was difficult, and you are super effective, so it was a level 18. They award Jason 270 battle EXP for the fight. Wow! For being smart with tactics, interesting to read, and clearly written, you also get 50 (this is a random value, your mod will be following a rubric) story EXP. A total of 380 for this long, arduous thread. Jason uses 100 to grow to 11, 110 to get to 12, and has 120 to get to 13. He now has 50/130EXP. This is a fairly extreme example of a player who defeated four pokemon in one thread, including one that should have been impossible to defeat - a boss battle, if you want. The person in this example wrote an engaging story and maybe even made the mod laugh! In this system, the more you do, the more you are rewarded, it's as simple as that. Go, Jason! You're one step closer to the Pokemon League.
Evolution Evolution is the same as the games, in accordance with the latest pokedex.
Pokemon will evolve at the correct level, or by touching the correct item.
Pokemon evolving via trade must gain a level under the control of another character, either PC or NPC. They must be holding any item they need to be.
If a pokemon evolves via happiness or friendship, they must have been actively participating in at least 5 threads with their trainer. They must get along with their trainer in the final thread before evolution can happen.
If they evolve by being in the right area, see below:
Nosepass evolves inside any large mountain.
Eevee evolves into Glaceon at ___ and Leafeon at ___
Capture On this site, capture works on a 'if you write it, it will come' basis. That is, if you write a believable solo or multi thread in which you befriend or battle and capture a pokemon, your mod will reward you with that pokemon.
We really value good and immersive writing on this site, and though our primary aim is to create individual adventures that coexist and interweave, we all really like to improve our writing and help each other, which is why you can request critique at the end of your thread. If your mod thinks that you haven't earned your pokemon, you haven't earned it.
Whether or not the capture was effective depends on the rarity of the pokemon attempted and and the quality and quantity of your post. If you write a 500 word post defeating and capturing a low level Caterpie, that will almost certainly be accepted. However, if you encounter a shiny Beldum in the wild and simply battle and capture it in 500 words, that will almost certainly not be accepted.
The longer your post, the more content and conflict and internal monologue and intrigue, the more likely your capture will be approved. You can have a capture that goes on for several threads, ie encountering that same Machoke for four solos before you finally decide to try to capture him. Or you can simply write a long, fun story that explains to us how you came across it, preferably why it is oddly coloured if it is, and why it decides to go with you (or why it doesn't have a choice).
Your capture will be approved in your thread assessment, though if your mod is unsure they may ask you to alter either your post or your capture, saying that you either need to add a little more information/conflict, or you could change it to a Magby instead of a Magmar, or get the non-shiny version if you asked for one.
The pokemon you capture can't gain battle exp during the thread in which you capture it, as the entire thread is considered your 'audition' if you like for being able to keep that pokemon. However, this does not necessarily apply to your starter pokemon capture thread, where the pokemon is viewed as more of a given. You may find for this reason that you do gain battle EXP in your starter's capture thread. Your starter is always captured at level 5.
Moves and Movesets Initial note: Trainers can make a training thread in order to teach a pokemon any move they can learn in accordance with the XY pokedex. They must spend the time to realistically teach the move to the pokemon in a way that they can understand it. It may also take a couple of extra threads of practice in order to consider it fully mastered.
Breeders' every naturally bred or caught from the wild pokemon begin with an extra two move slots that are already filled with two Egg Moves of your choice, as they have the ability to recognise potential in wild pokemon.
Now - every pokemon begins with 4 move slots that are naturally filled with level up moves. It gains an extra slot every 5 levels beginning at level 10. So the formula if you're that way inclined would be 4+(lvl/5) rounded down.
Lvl 0-9 = 4 moves. Lvl 10-14 = 5 moves. Lvl 15-19 = 6 moves.
And so on forever until your level 100 pokemon has 24 moves in all. What a repertoire!
Breeders always have an extra two but these cannot be altered or emptied or replaced, they remain those initial two Egg Moves until DEATH. Or until you spend Story EXP to change them.
Move Teaching and Moveset Alterations If you are a Trainer you can spend a thread teaching a pokemon any learnable move. Depending on the difficulty of the move, the strength and the type (is it a totally new type it's never mastered before?) it may take more than that one thread to consider the move fully mastered. Before it's considered mastered you will have to put (Learning) beside the move in your signature. All classes, however, can teach some moves to some pokemon in some circumstances... Clear, right? Let me explain. You may replace a known move with a similar move at any point, by roleplaying out your character teaching them to alter their execution into this similar one. The similar move must be within 20 Base Power of the known move, and it must be the same type. It is possible to replace a physical move with a special, or vice versa. Moves you can teach this way might not always be actually learnable by your pokemon according to the pokedex, but they MUST be logical. Even though some moves are not logical in the Dex (pokemon without arms using punch moves; without wings using Fly, etc.) we will not allow non-logical moves here, such as Dedenne using Steel Wing. You can 'climb' the move tower in this way. Have an example: You make a thread to teach Bill the Charmander, who knows Ember, how to strengthen that attack. Without buying a TM or doing anything else, you can have your character sit down with him and teach him Incinerate. Ember is a 40 power move, and Incinerate is a 60 power move. You want to get to a really powerful move, so you have a look for a higher power special move. You find Fiery Dance and have a look. Hmm, no, looks like you need wings for that one. Keep looking! Fire Pledge is 80 base power and looks like it'd work, or maybe Lava Plume. You spend another full thread teaching that. You decide then that you want to skip Flamethrower and go straight for the base 100 Inferno attack. Eek, so powerful! Awesome, right? This method can also be used to switch body parts - turn a Fire Fang into a Fire Punch if your buddy has fists. Turn a Steel Wing into a Metal Claw to use Skarmory's talons instead. Your new move will replace your old move. Only Trainers can teach a new move and ADD it to your move list. You can use this to learn status and buff moves - Flamethrower can be replaced with Will-o-Wisp. Here comes the kickers though. - Note
-
You must leave one full thread between move advancement, of that move. You can advance Ember to Incinerate in thread 1, and then in thread 2 you may change his Scratch to Swift. Then in thread 3 you can change Incinerate to Fire Pledge. And so on. Wow, you're going to have an awesome Charmander.
Additional note: your teaching methods have to be convincing. No writing forty words of you screaming 'just do it but better, ok, Bill?' Try to think about the best way to go about learning a different move.
Additional note 2: Since moves like Toxic, Rain Dance, Sunny Day and similar support moves are so widespread even when they are the only moves of that type available to a pokemon, most of the time you can not use them as a stepping stone by themselves. An Electrode can learn Toxic, but you cannot turn it into Sludge Bomb, a Cinccino cannot turn Sunny Day into Flamethrower and such. If they have something else to base themselves on though, feel free to get creative.
I think that's everything on that subject. Good luck figuring out a way to logically turn Nidoran's Peck into Fly. I look forward to reading it. Happy League-chasing!
Eggs Your character might decide that they want to get an egg at some point. Your thread to earn an egg should be of the same difficulty/length as to earn the base pokemon itself, but earning any odd colours or mutations comes as a sort of freebie, as long as it's explained if it needs to be.
The reason it's easier is because you still need to hatch the egg. To do this, there must be three full threads between the acquisition of the egg and the hatching of the egg; more if you like.
Note: a 'full thread' here is varying. It can be a 1-3k solo or a 1-2 page multi. You can count very long threads as two threads. For example if you have a 9000 word solo from finding an egg at the beginning, it can hatch at the end. Make sure you mention your egg several times and ensure it stays safely on your person most of the time. You should also travel with it a bit during this long thread.
Within these threads the egg must be mentioned at least once in each. If you want mutations or odd colourings, these threads are the time to offer up this information, and any explanation if there needs to be one.
When the egg hatches (at level 1), you are allowed to give it two egg moves, that will stay with it forever - so choose carefully! You can spend story EXP to change these, but it's not cheap. If it hatches and it looks different, maybe it's black instead of pink or it's a fire type Poochyena. Whoah! If you haven't touched on why before, you must explain why. Maybe you trace it back to the lab you found it in and discovered that these scientists have been altering the types of lots of pokemon. Normal shiny colorations don't need an explanation as such but try not to gloss over it and take it for granted!
In general, when a pokemon hatches it bonds with the first living creature it claps eyes on. They also don't have a pokeball but newborns are very unlikely to be able to escape a ball when capture is attempted. They are level 1 without exceptions.
If you have bred your own Roselia or Snorlax, they must have been holding the appropriate Incense to produce a baby stage. If it was found in the wild it can be what you like. I think that's everything! Enjoy your babies.
Trading Trading can be done with a player character or an NPC. It can also be done within your own characters, but this can't be abused.
When trading a pokemon with an NPC you can receive back a pokemon of the same level or less. The pokemon when traded, in any circumstance, will have their experience to the next level reset to zero, but their level will remain the same. Their moves and ability will also remain the same as they were when they belonged to their original trainer.
Moves can be rejiggered on their next level-up as normal.

• Getting Started! •
So you've decided to sign up? That's great, we're lucky to have you.
What you need to do first, is go to the Character Creation area and fill out the easy profile information for your character.
While you're waiting, hop to the Introductions board and introduce yourself! Chat on the cbox, look around at other people's posts, get a feel for the site.
Once your profile has been approved and moved into the profile area, you're free to start your adventure!
You can start anywhere on Honu Island. This starting island is relatively safe and well-trodden by human feet. Help is never too hard to find. For that reason, you're free to explore wherever you'd like.
To get off of Honu Island, though, is a bit trickier for new trainers. The only modes of transport from island to island are personal boats, commercial boats and Wingull-based flight. Scattered around Lorelii are pods powered by smart flocks of Wingull.
To leave this first island you must have pokemon strong enough to protect you from the wild pokemon on any subsequent island. For this safety reason, you will not be allowed to set foot on any island if you haven't earned badges.
(Badges can be earned in any possible order, and only eight are required to challenge the League.)
From there, you are free to travel around Lorelii as you choose! When you're ready and you own 8 shiny badges you can challenge the Pokemon League and become the reigning Champion of Lorelii!
Are you ready?
Posting Checklist
- Choose an area that you'd like to explore.
- Check that you are allowed to post in the area you have selected. Do you have the right badges if there is a badge minimum? Have you travelled there logically from where you were before? Have you paid your Wingull?
- Cool! If you want to play with someone else either mention it on the cbox or post a thread on the RP request board saying what your thread will be about and asking if anyone will join. If more than 1 person may join, specify that.
- Make your thread, name it anything you like.
- Copy and paste your signature into spoiler tags at the beginning of the post for a snapshot of your current team.
- Write your stuff. Follow our lenient but important rules. ;) Keep track of everything you gain and lose. Money, items, amount of battles.
- If you're stuck on something to happen next in your post, go to the RP Request board and post a reply to the Random Encounter Request thread. Wait for your unique event. This is optional, though, but if you want you can say that you will only capture and battle mod created pokemon to give yourself a more randomised team and make it more gamelike! This could be fun on later playthroughs especially. Use it whenever or however you like. You get 1.5x EXP for a mod-created encounter to reward you for the randomness and the challenge.
- Finish up your board. Here's a special little clue to you as a treat for reading all of this: you get an extra chunk of Story EXP just for every 500 words you write on a solo thread! Get writing!
- Post on the Mod Request thread in the RP Request board. Let them know if you want your thread to begin a site-wide Event! Wait for them to claim it and then wait for them to reward it.
- Check over to ensure that your beautiful and occasionally only human moderator has rewarded you for every battle you've done. Did they skim over the paragraph where Rhydon Mach Punched that Rattata in the alley? You should still get a couple of points for that. Let them know, politely, and wait for confirmation.
- Pick up all your loot and take it over to Character Advancement. Lay it out for them. Are you going to use Story EXP to buy items or are you going to use it on your pokemon? Double check your maths if like me you suck. When it's approved you can alter your profile.
- Add it all to your signature.
- Choose the next area you'd like to explore!

• Other Fun Stuff •
This will be regularly updated as more unique stuff is added to the site over time.
Dungeons Dungeons
Dungeons are a little quirk to channel your stories through. They are also a way to torture your character and then roll around in EXP! Woo!
You must have a pokemon level 10 or over to embark on a Dungeon - they're too difficult otherwise!
You can find a dungeon in pretty much any area in Lorelii, excluding Gyms. A dungeon must be relevant and logical to the area in which it is found. In Mt. Cana you can find a cave system, or an underground lava-filled chasm. Somewhere on Pagia Island there might be an undersea dungeon that you must acquire scuba gear and a trusty deep sea partner for.
During your spell in a dungeon of your choosing, you must include the following challenges to achieve the only thing we go into mysterious dungeons for...treasure!
Treasure is dependent on 3 things: amount of obstacles you overcome, amount of time you spend in a dungeon (a 5000 word dungeon is longer and more twisty and scary than a cute little 1000 word dungeon), and the area the dungeon is found in; the atmosphere of the dungeon itself.
In a watery dungeon you might find a water stone and a mystic water. In a forest dungeon you might find a Sun Stone and a basket of apples. Hey, treasure is subjective, okay?
To complete a dungeon you must include the word dungeon in your thread title, either in the title itself or [Dungeon], so the mod knows what they're looking at right away.
You must complete at the very least the following adventurous things:
- Defeat 3 wild pokemon in your path. - Overcome any non-battle obstacle, whether really simple or scarily difficult. A tree in your path? Can't find the door to the sunken ship? Running from an avalanche? - Defeat the dungeon's boss! This can be a gnarly old Steelix in an abandoned metalworks, or a team of Starly headed by a Staraptor in a forest. The boss battle must be a challenge.
You will get more prizes and experience the more stuff you include. You still get Story EXP too! A dungeon is a pretty fun (lifethreatening) way to pass the time. Explore.
You can also have your team go in without you, a la Mystery Dungeon, if you like. You can also tagteam with another RPer, of course. I wouldn't send in more than 3 pokemon each, but this is a recommendation, not a rule.
What is a rule, however, is that no more than 3 characters may enter the same dungeon at the same time. This is to keep things from taking too long or becoming too boring. A dungeon is already a lengthy adventure, so if you go in with to many people, you will be there for months. We don't want you getting stuck!
Another thing to keep in mind is that the length of the dungeon will be adjusted depending on both how hard you want it to be, and how many people are with you.
A default, Normal dungeon for one person has 4 challenges, including pokemon battles and roleplay obstacles. An Easy dungeon has three, and a Hard dungeon has five.
If you go in with more people, one extra challenge will be added per person. As such, if you go in with one other character, a normal dungeon will have 5 challenges, and a hard will have 6. Keep it in mind.
But don't forget that the greater the peril, the greater the glory! (And the rewards)
Have fun adventuring!
NOTE: All Dungeon encounters must be spawned by a mod in the Random Encounter Thread (see top of site) but it's up to you guys to roleplay out the encounter the way you see fit. Don't be afraid to fail if that's the only choice that makes sense. See other dungeon threads to see how they're done if you're confused.
You must leave 5 threads in between dungeons per character, and you cannot play through the same dungeon twice. Go explore!
Super Dungeons Super Dungeons
The main difference between a Dungeon and a Super Dungeon is that while Dungeon encounters are generated by a moderator and roleplayed by you -- Super Dungeon encounters are generated by a moderator AND played by a moderator. This gives it added challenge. The prizes and EXP from an SD are greater.
A Super Dungeon requires Event Tickets to take part in.
They are not live quite yet...more information on Super Dungeons is coming soon!
Events Events
Events will pop up from time to time at the top of the site under 'Current Events'. Anyone can take part in an event, all you have to do is put the name of the event in square brackets at the beginning of your thread and write to the plot provided. Some will be loose plots and some will be a little tighter. You will get extra prizes for taking part in an event!
Currently there are two main types of Event - Community Events and Plot Events (CEs and PEs).
Community Events are pretty cool. From now on, whenever you post a thread to request assessment you have the option to submit it as an Event Origin thread! CEs are always going to be stemming from an origin thread that you write.
To qualify for an event origin is not too difficult, really. Your thread must contain either an inciting incident or a contained event. You just have to think - have I set in motion/described an event that other players can write their character interacting with? The best way to explain this is through examples.
Your character does a job for a scientist, and it turns out that the serum you helped create attracts Combee to East Honu in droves! Submit this as an Event Origin and for a limited time other players may set their own subsequent threads within the event that you created by adding [Combee Horde] to the title of their East Honu thread, and having their character die of a bee sting. Or something.
For participating in an Event Thread you unlock an extra Story EXP criteria which means there's an extra chunk of experience that you're eligible to achieve from your thread. As well as this you will get a certain number of Event Tickets that can be used to purchase a huge variety of prizes that differ from the more mechanical/gamelike prizes of Story EXP!
Note: participants in a community event: you may do whatever you like within the set event but you cannot change the canon of the origin thread. If the Combee Scientist thread resolves itself because their main character concocted an anti serum that drove them away, your character cannot also be the one to solve the issue. You're just writing your own experiences during the event they lay out. However do feel free to do what you like as long as it doesn't contradict the origin thread!
Plot Events will pop up at mod's whims and the outcome of a PE could (should) change the canon of Lorelii forever! The outcome of a PE could be a new or destroyed area on the map, new or dissolved factions, new or retired NPCs - and more. It all depends on your character's decisions during that event. Watch this space for more information.

• The Pokemon League! •
What you're all here for! Or...some of you. The cool ones, anyway. Screw catching 'em all, we wanna be Champion, right?
Now, the League is simple, really. It consists of Gyms, the Elite Four, and then the Champion. If you gain eight Gym badges, you are permitted to challenge the Elite Four. If you defeat all four of the E4 in a row without a pause, you may challenge the Champion. If you defeat the Champion, you BECOME the Champion!
The League has two very important purposes in Lorelii, as in most regions.
Firstly, the League is a moneymaker. The government gets a hell of a lot of money from people buying tickets to watch matches. It is covered by all major networks and is the most-watched show on television at all times. Strong trainers who take part in the league are celebrities, whether minor or major, and idolised by many. Important matches in history create landmarks, and the more tourists a region gets, the more well-off it tends to be.
Secondly, the League is a way to keep tabs on its strongest residents. If something terrible were to happen, you'll note that when signing up for the League and getting your Dex and your first badge, the small print you signed basically conscripted you to defend the region against major attacks. This means that the government tends to call on the Champion, Gym leaders, Elite Four and any other famous trainers to aid the rangers with their strong pokemon.
To challenge a Gym you must have at least one level 10 pokemon on your team.
You can do a Gym battle as a fully modded thread, in which case you will start a thread on the Gym's subboard and wait for your mod (feel free to poke in the cbox if you get no reply for a while) and they will play the leader and their pokemon. You will not be able to control any aspect of this match other than your character and pokemon.
You can now alternatively do a Gym as a semi-modded thread. This rule was introduced mostly for periods where mods are particularly busy, or if you just feel like writing more as a solo activity and maybe getting it done faster. To do this, head to the random encounter request section of the site and make it clear that you want to face the Gym leader. The mod will then post every tactic, move and pokemon the leader chooses to utilise. You will then incorporate all of these decisions into your battle. To do this, you'll need to post what you have so far for the mod to read, post by post as if it were a modded thread, and return to the random encounter request section (if a mod isn't jumping quickly enough to respond.) It is also VERY important to note our Battle Synopsis rule if you go this route. You must clearly put every move you used in each round in spoiler tags at the end of your post.
You must have four fully completed threads between Gym challenges if you defeated the last Gym. If it's a rematch because you lost, only one full thread before your next challenge is required. Get training!
In the future it will be possible to apply for the position of an Elite Four member.

• Mega Evolution •
This may change in the future but for now this is how Mega Evolution will occur.
Once you have acquired your third Gym Badge, you may travel to get your Key Stone. A Key Stone can be acquired, currently, from three areas that will be further determined later - the Headquarters of our separate three teams. If you already belong to one, acquiring is simple - just ask your superior in your next thread! If you do not belong to a team and do not plan to, you must find another way. You should either ask them and offer to do a difficult job in exchange, or you can try to steal one!
The three headquarters are currently Tectana Island: Worcesterleigh City (Team Argent), Honu Island: Honu City: Honu Catacombs (Secret 77), and Balsa Island: Flaur Village (Lorekeepers).
Once you have acquired your Stone, you must decide how you want to set it! Do you want a Mega Bracelet, Mega Watch, Mega Headphones, Mega Earrings, Mega Knuckleduster, Mega Eyepatch, I could go on forever! The Stone is roughly golf-ball size, so decide which setting you would like and add your Mega Item to your profile!
Now - you must also give your mega the correct 'ite' Mega Stone to hold. To achieve that you must complete a Super Dungeon!
Now you have your stone and your mega evolution items. A mega evolution lasts roughly the duration of a battle or encounter, and they cannot do it again for roughly the duration of another battle or encounter. Only one pokemon can be mega evolved at once because your Stone is linked to only one at a time. Enjoy your new more powerful pokemon forms!
