Mira

“Oof!”

Alphonse rushed to his daughter’s aide, grabbing her chubby arms from behind as she fell. She looked up and giggled, xanadu-tinted eyes full of mirth. Al sighed, but smiled, lifting his daughter over his head and onto his shoulders. The 5-year-old laughed in delight and gripped at his shaggy hair. He gripped her legs softly and continued his trek through the beautiful Seraphim Valley. Seeing a particular flower, Al bent over, careful not to drop her, and plucked it from the ground. Reaching back, he offered her the Gaillardia.

“You should be more careful, Mira. It’s dangerous out here. Especially for little girls.”

Mira patted his hair and leaned over, trying to show him her toothy smile, stuffing the flower in her hair. Leaning over a bit too far, she almost fell from his shoulders, giving Al a mini-heart attack. Once he was sure she was secured on his shoulders, he huffed in annoyance, a secret smile playing on his lips.

“I don’t- um, have to be careful, Daddy!” she said, stumbling a bit over her words.

The little girl giggled, reaching around his head and squishing his face together. Al winced as his daughter’s rather fluffy palm smacked painfully against his cheeks. A smile then graced his lips as Mira laid her head on top of his, hugging his head from behind.

“I have you, Daddy! You can protect me!” she exclaimed, smiling wide.

Al’s smile widened as well and he patted the leg dangling off his shoulder.

“And you always will, sweetheart,” he assured her.

Suddenly, Al stopped short and gasped in excitement. Like the child he used to be, he bounced happily over to a small pile of rocks. Faster than lightning, he took Mira off his shoulders and placed her safety on the ground beside him before throwing himself to the ground, drool sliding down his chin. Mira looked at her father in confusion and annoyance, not liking being off his shoulders.

“Um, Daddy? Why’d you stop?” she whined, crossing her arms in a pout.

Al ignored her, eyes sparkling. Pulling his bag off his back, he dug in, pulling out a large tool box. Mira poked him. Her only response was incoherent mumbles of glee.

“Daddy?” she prodded.

Poke.

“Daddy?...” Her face scrunched up more in annoyance.

Poke.

“Daddy! Listen to me!” Mira yelled as she stomped her foot, her lip trembling in a bratty pout.

“Huh?” The man paused as if just hearing her words.

Mira sighed heavily as her dad looked back at her in confusion.

“Oh, do you need something, sweetie?” he asked with a grin.

Mira frowned before crossing her chubby arms. She tapped her foot, irritated. Al paused, eyes widened.

Just like her mother.

“You didn’t answer me. Why’d you stop?” she continued to pout.

He looked at her incredulously. Speechless for a moment, he gestured wildly at the rock, arms flailing in different directions. Mira raised a brow. Al let out a breath of exasperation.

“Do you not know what this is?” he sighed.

She blinked at him, face blank with boredom. Al rolled his head back, staring at the sky with a pained expression.

“What have I done wrong? Was it my fault?” he seemed to ask the heavens.

Mira pouted again, giving her foot another stomp.

“Daddy!” she whined, “Just tell me already!”

Al laughed in good nature, pulling his daughter close to look at the rock.

“Now listen carefully,” he began.

Al paused, looking at the back of his daughters head. She nodded, waiting for his next instructions. After a while of silence, she looked back curiously. Al smiled.

“Well, are you listening?” he inquired, eyes shimmering.

Mira rolled her eyes and gave him a pointed look. He held up is arms in surrender.

“Okay, just making sure. Anyway, what we have here is a rock,” he explained.

Mira went to interrupt, but her father held hand to stop her, giving her a look.

“Now listen. This isn’t just any rock. In this rock, there’s a special metal.”

“There’s metal? In there? Like the ones you play with? How does it fit? How do you take it out? Whe-” the girl fired off questions, her curiosity bubbling out.

“Shush, shush, shush, shush! That is for another time!” he hushed her before continuing.

Mira looked at him in surprise but nodded, letting him continue. Al smiled at her.

“This metal is called Tantalum. It’s a very strong and rare metal used to help doctors perform surgery. If I’m able to find enough of this, I’ll be able to sell it at a good price. Then we can find a home, Mira. Somewhere you can go to school and have a stable life. Not all this traveling. I want the best for my baby girl!” he finished, smiling sadly at his daughter.

Mira looked up to her father, his eyes downcast and watering. She turned her body towards him and wrapped her small arms around his waist, her head finding a nook in his shoulder. His arms automatically reached up to hold her to him and for several moments; they stood still in silence. Mira spoke up hesitantly.

“Don’t worry, Daddy! I like traveling. I think that it’s fun!” she encouraged him.

Al pulled away with a laugh and placed a wet kiss on her forehead. Mira blanched and wiped at it furiously, a look of disgust on her face.

“I know you do, sweetheart. You get that from me.” He winked.

The proud father ruffled his daughter’s hair.

“Daddy, stop that!” she whined, giggling.

He laughed as she whined again, ignoring her as she complained about germs and her hair. Al took this time to gather the rocks in his backpack, before returning his tools and slinging it over his shoulder. He groaned a little from the weight, but otherwise stayed silent. With this, he could put his daughter through education. He was never going to complain about that.

When Mira had finally stopped trying to fix her hair, she turned towards her father. He stood there, smiling at her with a close-eyed smile.

“Are you ready to go?” he asked.

Mira nodded.

“Mhmm, where are we going now?” she inquired with a tilt of her head.

Alphonse held out his hand for his daughter to take and she did.

“Well, I believe if we continue traveling south, we can reach Marei City,” he said with a smile. He looked at his daughter in adoration. “It’s by the beach, you know!”

Mira squealed in excitement and began pulling her father in a random direction.

“Then come on, what are you waiting for?”

Al laughed as his daughter dragged him away. Mira yelped cutely and giggled when she was picked up from behind and spun around.

“Wrong direction, sweetheart. This way,” he corrected her.

She giggled again before shivering. Al looked at his daughter with an eyebrow raised.

“Cold?” he asked.

She nodded sheepishly, her hands reaching up to rub at her arms. Al removed his backpack again before removing his jacket. With the jacket in hand, he helped her into it. He stepped back to look at her and chuckled. Mira pouted.

“What?” she asked, confused.

He was laughing because of how ridiculous she looked in it. The green jacket was entirely too big for her, the sleeves going well past her arms, and it dragging behind her. But instead of sharing this he shook his head. Grabbing her hand, he sent another smile her way

“It’s nothing. It’s good I had that jacket, though. Seems like it’s gonna storm soon. Anyway, now that we’re done with that, let’s go!” he exclaimed.

With high hopes and big dreams, the pair matched off to Marei City hand-in-hand. An hour later, just before they could reach the end of Seraphim Valley and wonder into the neighboring woods that separated them from the Marei, Al stopped short. Mira looked up at him in confusion.

“What is it, Daddy?”

He grinned down to his daughter.

“Look, right over there. Do you see it?”

He pointed to the woods. Mira glazed curiously into the thick trees before spotting it. A tree, seemingly gigantic to her, was snapped in half, now lying down on the forest floor.

“Daddy?” she asked quietly, fear creeping into her voice.

“It’s okay, sweetheart! I’ll protect you, remember?!” he encouraged her.

He smiled down at his daughter, and, slowly, he walked towards the tree, gazing at it in wonder. Then he turned his head to look at the surrounding trees.

“This is fantastic! This forest has all the signs of being home to an Ursaring! Look at this!”

He gestured to the scratches on the trees.

“Do you know what these marks mean, Mira?” he asked his daughter.

She shook her head.

“These scratches are made by an Ursaring to mark the trees that bear delicious fruit and berries!” he explained.

“Hm.” He frowned.

Mira grabbed at her father’s hand in concern.

“What’s wrong?” she asked with wide eyes.

“The marks look fresh,” he said with concern.

A growl rumbled through the forest and Al stiffened.

“Oh, no,” fear ripped through his voice.

Slowly, the pair turned around. There, in a defensive stance, stood Al’s worse fears. An Ursaring, with its teeth bared, standing at optimal height, effective for intimidation. Her grip tightened on his hand.

“Daddy…” she cried.

His hand squeezed hers.

“Don’t worry, Mira. Remember, I’ll always protect yo-” he was cut off suddenly.

A mighty roar erupted from the Ursaring’s mouth, causing poor little Mira to yelp rather loudly. Its eye’s flashed towards her dangerously, before lowering itself into a crouch. Al’s eyes widened in panic, moving in front of his daughter to shield her. At that moment, the bear pokémon charged. Al pushed Mira back roughly, causing her to stumble and fall. She grunted, the ground hitting her hard. In horrible realization, she looked up just as the Ursaring raised a paw to slash at her father.

“DADDY!”

Blood oozed from his body as he was thrown to the ground. Ursaring pounced again, clawing and biting. Mira watched on in horror, her sobs being drowned out by her father’s pained screams.

It felt like ages before the Ursaring lifted itself from the mangled body. Its ears perked up and it turned towards the girl’s cries. It growled lowly, blood dripping from its mouth as it assessed its threat. The Ursaring took a step forward.

“Teddi… Ursa!”

The little bear pokémon ran up to its mother, causing the Ursaring to stop in its tracks. The mother bear turned towards her cub for a moment, then glanced back at the cowering girl. It eyed her wearily, taking in her smaller form and smelling her fear. With a final growl, the Ursaring bit its cub’s scruff and ran away, deciding that the small human was no threat.

Mira sat on the floor still, her eyesight blurry and her small frame trembling in shock and fear. Then, her eyes widened.

“Daddy!” she screamed.

She ran towards his body, fear gripping her heart. Falling to the ground beside his head, she reached out to touch him. Her hand came in contact with his cheek, blood wetting her, but she ignored it.

“Daddy?”

She shook her hand on his cheek, shaking his head slightly.

“Daddy? Daddy, wake up!” she pleaded.

He didn’t moved. Even more tears fell from her eyes.

“Wake up!” she cried.

Nothing.

“I said wake up!” she sobbed through her shouts.

Her head fell to his wounded chest as sobs wrenched through her. She bit her lip hard, causing a small stream of blood to fall down her chin and mingle with his. Her other hand reached to grab his. She squeezed it.

“Please?” she pleaded.

Mira spent hours next to her father’s body, lying with him, until a drop fell from the sky. Not too long after that, more fell. Mira buried herself into the body, clutching his jacket to herself. Her eyes teared up again, body shaking with more cries.

A small ways back, a Cubone panicked, not at all prepared for the storm. Not at all the smartest of his kind, he looked around frantically for some sort of shelter from the storm. The rain was pouring without stop, pelting him. Deciding it was his best bet, the Cubone sat under a small tree, hoping its leaves and branches would protect him from the skies assault.

A noise caught his attention. It was a curious noise, like a whimper of a wounded animal. Filled with a strange feeling, the Cubone stood and followed it. Where it lead him, he never expected. A collapsed tree. He stood and stared at it, wonder why the tree would be crying. Wait, do tree even cry? Impossible. Only one explanation then. The noise was coming behind the tree.

The Cubone walked towards the tree, his curiosity building. When he reached the tree, he climbed it, not bothering to go around it. His eyes widened at the sight.

There, in this small wooded area, in this pouring rain, a human girl cried. Not only that, but she seemed to be hovering over something else. He walked closer, quietly as he could, not she could hear him over her own sounds. Sympathy flushed through the Cubone. It was another human, presumably her parent.

Suddenly feeling a connection to the girl, having had shared the same moment after the death of his mother, the Cubone approached the girl slowly. Stupidly, he stepped on a twig, causing a rather loud snapping noise and disturbing this girl’s moment. Her head whipped up and she stared at him, fear evident in her swollen red eyes. The girl was covered in blood, most of it not being hers. Her curly red hair flattened against her head in the heavy rain. When he took a step closer, she stiffened, tightening her grip on the body. The Cubone moved closer, cautiously.

“Cubone,” he stated.

The girl stared at him for a while, an uncomfortable tension surrounding them. After five minutes of staring, the girl finally looked back to her body, ignoring the pokémon that didn’t seem to want anything. Taking that as a silent invitation, the Cubone sat beside her, neither not really moving.

Cubone jumped when rough coughs shook the girl. Concerned, he turned towards her. That did not sound healthy at all. Maybe… He looked toward the south. Maybe he could find some help.

Grabbing the girl’s hand, Cubone stood and pulled her behind him.

“N-no! St-stop!” she struggled in his grip.

Cubone shook his head.

“Cubone.”

Mira struggled for a moment more before another coughing fit started. Cubone stopped and looked at the girl. Once she finished, she looked into Cubone’s eyes hesitantly, drowsiness starting to overcome her.

“Cubone?”` he asked, tugging her hand softly.

She bit her lip and looked behind her at her father’s body. She coughed again, pain spreading through her chest. Gazing back at the Cubone, she nodded.

“Coobone.”

Not really caring for her mispronunciation, Cubone began to gently lead the girl to the closest place of human civilization he knew, Marei City.
