“Ah-CHOO!”
Cecilia was definitely feeling the late autumn cold creep up on her. She adjusted her jacket, clutching her cotton candy with freezing hands. Maybe falling into a river in the middle of November wasn’t the best idea, but hell if she was going to let a little cold prevent her from having fun!
Sammy nodded next to her, as if she could read her mind. Cecilia smiled towards the Totodile, who was chewing on a candy apple. Her teeth were strong, but the sticky sugar was sticking to them, causing the Totodile to open and close her mouth repeatedly in an attempt to get rid of the sticky feeling.
The two strolled through Jujine town’s square, where the festivities were escalating. Balloons and confetti streamers were everywhere, and loud music was blasting through some sort of speaker system. Stalls and booths filled with games were lining the streets, most of which Cecilia had tried her hand at already. Sammy had gotten mad after being told that the wooden dolls were supposed to be knocked down with water guns, not Water Guns, and so Cecilia had bought the Totodile a treat to make her feel a little better.
Sasha had already gorged himself on sweet treats, and was taking a break inside his Pokéball. Charlie had found the loudness of the festival to not be to her taste, and had also retreated. That left Sammy, and so Cecilia and Sammy were wandering around together. If she had her way, Cecilia would have released all of her Pokémon to run around and have fun, but she supposed this was fine too.
A couple of children ran past the duo, almost knocking Cecilia off of her feet. She regained her balance, pouting and taking another bite of her cotton candy. Of course, being a local festival, the place was packed with kids. Many stallkeepers had mistaken her for one, due to her short height and lack of feminine curves, but Cecilia had learned to not let it bother her. It totally didn’t. Really!
She took a seat on the curb, letting the sweetness of her cotton candy dissipate on her tongue. Sammy approached her quizzically, tilting her head in confusion. “Nah, nothing’s wrong. I’m just bored!” Cecilia cried out. The Totodile nodded. They did conquer most of the games available, and the costume contest wasn’t bound to start for a couple of hours at best.
“This would be so much more fun if I had a friend.” Cecilia complained. Sammy waved her arms around. Hello? She was right here! “No, not you, Sammy! Like, a human friend. Someone that I could go, like…YEAH! I mean, I guess I can go YEAH with you too, and I think you’re swell, it’s just. Urgh. It’s hard to explain, okay? Humans have opposable thumbs! We’re a little different. The feeling is.”
“But still, it would be a lot better if we could like, do something. I’m starting to get antsy here! The ants are in my pants! I’m not even wearing pants and I have ants in them!” She pointed to her leggings. “Maybe we should find someone to battle.”
The Totodile’s eyes sparkled at the word ‘battle’. Yes! She jumped up and down, kicking her feet.
“We have to find someone first, though.” Cecilia said. She got up, finishing the rest of her cotton candy and throwing the paper cone into a nearby garbage can along with the remains of Sammy’s candy apple.
The teenager brushed some dirt off of herself, making her way back into the crowd of people. “Helloooo? Would you like a battle?” She asked a man who was speaking on the phone. He made a face, waving her away and leaving. Cecilia frowned, but kept trying. “What about you, miss? A battle?”
The woman, who was trying to prevent her child from running off, shook her head and was promptly dragged off. Cecilia wanted to scream. What gives! Why did nobody want to battle? Obviously these people had nothing better to do than battle!
“Excuse me!”
Huh? Cecilia turned around to see a preteen looking kid. She took his hands in her own, aura practically shining. “Are you going to battle me?” She asked. He quietly removed his hands from Cecilia’s, wiping them off on his sweater.
“No. But I was just going to say that they have some sort of competition going on, and also a battle maze over there. I think signups for the competition might be over, though.” He said, rubbing the back of his head awkwardly.
Cecilia nodded. “Then we’ll do the maze! It’s over there! Let’s go! Thanks!” She quickly hugged him before running off, leaving the boy grumbling to himself.
“Mom was right…shouldn’t talk to strangers…”
Cecilia sprinted straight in the direction that the boy had pointed out, not noticing the large hedge that was blocking her way. She crashed straight into it, falling down on the floor. She opened her eyes to see Sammy’s face staring down at her, and the teenager hurriedly sat up.
“Are you here for the battle maze?” A man wearing a bright orange shirt asked. It looked to be some sort of uniform, seeing as it had JUJINE FESTIVAL STAFF printed on it in big white letters.
“YES!” Cecilia yelled. Sammy laughed and clapped her hands.
“You’ve come to the right place, then, little miss! Do you want me to explain it?” He asked.
“…YES!” Cecilia responded.
“Well, as you can see, we have a maze here made out of hedges! If you can reach the center by the time limit, you’ll win a cash prize! You can also win additional bonus prizes depending on how fast you make it! But be warned- there are Trainers wandering around the maze, and if you find them, you have to battle! Of course, there are also healing points around the maze, so take in your team and test your skill! If time runs out, you’ll be notified through the speaker over there.” He pointed.
“I’m in! I want to do it!” Cecilia said with unbridled enthusiasm. This sounded like so much fun! She knew that the festival had more to offer than just boring stall games!
“Okay, then! The entrance is this way, let me show you…” The staff member led Cecilia around the edge of the maze, circling around it until they reached a point where there was a break in the hedges. Another person wearing an orange shirt was in front of the entrance, holding a tablet-like device supposedly used for signups in her left hand.
“We have a participant!” The male staff member shouted. The female worker looked up, smiling at Cecilia.
“So we do! What’s your name?”
“I’m Cecilia!” The teenager piped up.
“Okay, Cecilia…You’re entry number thirty four! Please feel free to head inside! If you see someone with a yellow shirt, they’re a staff member and a required battle! If you can make it to the center of the maze in three hours, you can win a cash prize! If you hear your name and number on the speakers, that means your time is over! If that happens, please remain still so one of our staff members can retrieve you and help you out! Happy maze running!” She said, motioning towards the entrance.
Cecilia stared at the gap between the leafy walls, determined to make it through. Sammy was showing similar sentiments, and was fidgeting while waiting for Cecilia to lead the way inside. The Trainer sprinted in, followed energetically by her Totodile.
“Good luck!” “Good luck!” Two voices said in unison as Cecilia took a right turn and disappeared from view.

“….No, this way is a dead end, too.” Cecilia said, peeking past a corner. Sammy groaned. She just wanted to get a battle going already! Wasn’t this called a BATTLE maze? Not a dead end maze? The Totodile slumped down, back against the hedges. Cecilia kicked the Pokémon back up to her feet. “No breaks, lazybones! We’re on a time limit, remember?”
Sammy hesitantly waddled after Cecilia. Did she really know where she was going? The Trainer had been backtracking, spinning around, and double taking her way throughout the labyrinth, and the Totodile had no idea where they were anymore. She really hoped that Cecilia had a mental map of the place, because she sure as hell didn’t. Oh, well. It was a lot more fun to leave the thinking to other people, anyway.
Cecilia took note of a stray twig that wasn’t neatly trimmed from the wall of bushes. “Wait! We’ve been here before! I remember this! This twig was the one that was in the shape of Steven Stone!” She pointed furiously. It was true. The twig was slightly Steven shaped. Cecilia sneezed on the tiny branch, covering it with her germs.
“I guess we can’t sell it for a fortune anymore.” Cecilia said, breaking the twig from the rest of the hedge and throwing it on the ground. Sammy bowed her head in silent remembrance for the twig.
There were a couple of shouts coming from deeper inside the maze- was it another challenger? Possibly. The possibility of being beaten filled Cecilia with determination. She rushed in a random direction that she (thought) she hadn’t been in before, leaving Sammy to scurry after her. Left, right, left? No. Left, left, right. NO? Okay, then. What about right, left, left?
The teenager weighed her mental options at incredible speed, attempting to head towards the source of the sound. If someone was in front of her, it would make sense to try and go in the direction that they were at, yeah? Probably.
“Attention! Contestant number thirty two has been defeated! Please remain where you are- an attendant will collect you shortly.” A female voice announced over the speakers.
Ooh. Thirty two was a goner. Did they run out of time? No, she had said that they were defeated. Did that mean that she had to WIN all the battles before reaching the center? Losing was elimination? Huh. Cecilia just thought that they had to make it there before time was up. But, it was a battle maze, and it wouldn’t be fair if someone without any Pokémon could just waltz right in through the center.
Cecilia rounded the corner, where the narrow space between hedges had somehow opened up into a larger area. An older teenager in a yellow shirt was hunched over something, doing who-knows-what. He was kind of tall, but his posture was absolutely terrible! Cecilia found herself shaking her head. But that shirt looked familiar, it was just like the ones that the people up front were wearing, but a different color?
“Yoo-hoo!” Cecilia called out, and the supposed staff member almost fell over while jumping up.
“Y-y-yes! Challenger? Are you are a challenger? Oh, that’s stupid, of course she’s a challenger...you stupid. Stupid.” He started mumbling to himself.
“Sorry, can’t hear you! You’re gonna have to talk LOUDER! LIKE THIS!” Cecilia yelled, cupping her hands around her mouth. She approached the person,
“S-sorry!” He apologized, bowing. “Not another one…another…shouter…”
What was up with this guy? There sure were some weird people out here. Well, that’s what made things exciting, Cecilia thought. “Battle me!” She demanded. “That’s what you’re here for, right?”
“Uh….yes.” The staff member cleared his throat. “Um…this will be a three on three battle! Whoever knocks out all of the opponent’s Pokémon will win!” He said in an obviously rehearsed manner. “Uh…you do have three Pokémon, right?”
“Of course! Who do you take me for?” Cecilia said, clutching her chest in fake offense.
“Uh…okay. So let’s uh…let’s have some fun? Is that what I’m supposed to say?” He scratched at his jet black hair, turning around. Now that Cecilia could see him clearly, she saw that the object that he had been holding was a Great Ball- and a pretty shiny looking one at that.
“Yeah! Fun!” Cecilia echoed.
“Um…okay, I guess we’re starting then? If you’re gonna use your Totodile…” He stared at his Great Ball, and then glanced into his pants pocket, where he supposedly kept the rest of his Pokéballs. “Only have these three… guess I have no choice…Burton…”
Huh? What was a Burton? Cecilia’s mental question was answered when the Great Ball was thrown, releasing a burst of white light that slowly faded to reveal a Timburr. The Fighting Pokémon flexed his muscles, twirling around his wooden log to show off a little.

Timburr♂ Burton
Level: 10 Ability: Guts Moves: 5 Moveset: 1- Pound 2- Leer 3- Focus Energy 4- Bide 5- Low Sweep
Bio This pokemon has no scruples, and will often disobey his trainer in battle and go for a different attack based on what he thinks will work. If he had his way he would just punch, bite and kick until the enemy gave up.
Cecilia’s eyes sparkled and she ran forward, enveloping the Timburr in a big bear hug, standing up while clutching the Pokémon. “OH, MY GOD!” She squealed. “IT’S SO CUTE!”
The battle maze staff member closed his eyes, sticking his fingers in his ears to drown out Cecilia’s voice. “Um…we’re supposed to be battling…” He pointed out.
“Oh. Right.” Cecilia said, still carrying the Timburr. She turned, causing the Timburr’s legs to swing along with her movement. The Trainer returned to her spot opposite her opponent on the (not very large) battlefield. “Ready when you are!”
“Um. You’re holding my Pokémon.” He stated.
“Oh. Right.” Cecilia repeated, putting down the Timburr. “I…I just couldn’t help myself! She’s just too cute, okay? I needed to pet her! Her and her little pompadour, and her tiny nose! I…it’s just so cute!”
“Um…Burton is a boy…” The staff member said, watching as the Timburr walked back to his side of the battlefield, obviously annoyed. Actually, there were a lot more things that he wanted to say, but he decided that it would be a good idea to clamp his mouth shut and just do his job.
“Oh. Whatever.” Cecilia waved a hand dismissively. “Okay, so Sammy, you wanna go? Sammy v Burton? The V stands for versus.”
The Totodile nodded. Finally! Her chance to shine! Move over, Sasha and Charlie. The real star was here. The Water type bounded forwards, doing a little dance before pounding her feet down on the ground. The Timburr didn’t look too impressed, but was scanning Sammy up and down, studying her movements.
“We’ll take the first move! Sammy, Bite!” Cecilia commanded. The Totodile grunted in acknowledgement, running forward to clamp her jaws over the Timburr’s arm.
“Low Sweep, Burton!”
Unfortunately for the Totodile, the Timburr slid outwards, swiping at Sammy’s legs using his own feet. The Water type fell down, jaw hitting the floor with a thud.
“Now, Pound!”
Taking advantage of the fact that the Totodile was on the ground, the Timburr held its wooden beam in both hands and slammed it down onto the alligator Pokémon’s back, causing her to squeal in pain. Cecilia gasped, but refused to panic.
“Water Gun!” Sammy shot a jet of water towards Burton’s face, disorienting the Timburr and causing him to drop his wooden pole. “Yes!” Cecilia cheered, watching as the Totodile’s seemingly never ending Water Gun continued to spray Burton’s face.
“Get back! Focus Energy!” The Timburr’s Trainer commanded. Interestingly, the Timburr refused to obey, instead picking up his prop and flying towards Sammy in a rage.
The Fighting type slammed down his beam on the ground, but Sammy dodged gracefully. The sheer amount of power behind the blow guaranteed that he couldn’t recover in time to defend against the Totodile’s next blow, and he was ultimately Scratched in the face a couple of times. Sammy’s blows alternated between both hands, and it was only after a couple of seconds of this barrage of Scratches before the Timburr could orient himself enough to block her claws with his wooden beam.
“Burton! Listen to me! Bide!” His Trainer begged. The Timburr, seeing as the technique ordered was not an offensive one, scoffed at the Jujine staff member, instead opting for another Pound attack. He thrusted his log like a spear, but Sammy caught it with a Bite attack, and the two Pokémon quickly found themselves in a tug-of-war over the Timburr’s wooden toy.
Cecilia whistled. The Timburr’s veins were starting to pop out of his skin even further than they usually were- was he getting angry? She wasn’t going to lie, that was kind of funny. And cute. But mostly funny. How could she take advantage of this situation? “Let go! And Water Gun!” She shouted.
Sammy opened her mouth, freeing the beam from her jaws. The Timburr, who had been pulling on it with all of his strength, jerked backwards, falling over from the sudden lack of resistance. He was promptly sprayed in the face with another Water Gun, and the squared log was smacked into his body along with the force of the water. “Nice one!” Cecilia praised her Totodile, who grinned at her triumphantly.
“Burton! Please! Leer! This is our only chance!” His Trainer was still pleading for his Pokémon to listen. This only served to aggravate Burton further. Did he really think that he knew better than him? Was he saying that his way was better than the Timburr’s? Burton was the Pokémon, the one who was actually in the fight. Of course he would know the best course of action! The human was seriously getting on his nerves!
The Timburr swung his log forward, smacking Sammy’s stomach with another Pound while she was busy gloating. He smiled triumphantly at his successful attack, pleased to know that he was in fact smarter than his Trainer. “Sammy, Rage!” Cecilia ordered. Her Totodile grimaced, feeling her anger build up at the stinging of her stomach. The Water type lunged forward, tackling the Timburr straight onto the ground. Burton lost his squared log to the ground, and was forced into a wrestling match with Sammy. The two of them tussled on the floor, with the Timburr scoring Pound after Pound of consecutive punches. Sammy’s Rage was building with each hit, until finally she grabbed the Timburr’s torso and slammed him onto the ground with enough force to kick up a cloud of dust.
“Oh, wow.” Cecilia said.
The Timburr was clearly knocked unconscious, and Sammy was breathing heavily, trying to regain her breath. The Totodile looked tired, but she found enough energy to look towards Cecilia and give her a grin and a thumbs up. The teenager returned the gesture.
“Uh…I guess you won that one.” The staff member said. “Uh…I’ll be choosing my next one, then…” He made a face at this, returning Burton back to his Great Ball and instead trying to pick one out of the two remaining Great Balls that he had in his possession.
Cecilia motioned for Sammy to get back, too. The Totodile obliged, only because she was feeling a bit peckish after that battled and wanted a time out. “Okay, so I guess Charlie’s next?” Cecilia asked Sammy, who shrugged. If it wasn’t her, she didn’t really care who was next. Cecilia chucked the Pokéball onto the battlefield, where her Hoothoot materialized.
“God, a Hoothoot…” The black haired man stared at his Great Balls with a face that seemed like he was trying to choose the lesser of two evils.
“Does it really take that long to pick one?” Cecilia asked. Sammy had sat down next to her Trainer’s legs, closing her eyes for a nap. Charlie looked backwards at the duo, unimpressed by their lack of professionalism.
“…Sorry.” He held his face in his hands and threw a Great Ball forwards, releasing white light. As soon as the light faded, Cecilia had to cover her ears from the shrill screaming of the Pokémon inside.

A Whismur? That was definitely a Whismur. But…
Cecilia blinked, scanning the Pokémon up and down. She’d seen a lot of Whismur in her day, but none of them had…green ears? Yeah! She was certain that Whismur’s ears were not green. What color were they supposed to be? She didn’t remember, but it sure as heck wasn’t green. Did that mean that this Whismur was a shiny?
The teenager thought back to Amy’s Absol, Quell. She had been a weird color, too. Did everyone have a weird colored Pokémon but her? This wasn’t fair! Cecilia wanted a special Pokémon, too! Ignoring the Whismur’s yelling, Cecilia shouted above the Pokémon’s voice. “Shiny! Shiny Whismur!”
Upon hearing the word ‘shiny’, the Whismur went into a frenzy, throwing herself onto the ground and twitching around in intense spasms. Where were the shiny things?? She had to know! Why did nobody tell her! There was nothing! Nothing! The Normal type let out a shrill screech of despair, rolling around in the dirt.
The Jujine Festival staff worker had his face in his hands, undoubtedly embarrassed at the small Pokémon’s actions. “Leppa…Leppa!” He tried to calm down the Whismur, but his voice was drowned out by his Pokémon’s yells.
Cecilia shared a glance with Charlie. The bird Pokémon didn’t look to be too pleased at this matchup, and stared at Cecilia with an expression that conveyed her thoughts perfectly. ‘Really? You’re sending me against this thing?’
The teenager paid her no mind, instead deciding that she should once again take the first attack. “Charlie, Uproar!” She commanded. The Hoothoot, sighing deeply but obeying anyway, took in a breath and let out a scream almost as loud as the Whismur’s. The tone of the two voices didn’t harmonize at all, and the result was a disastrous cacophony for the two Trainers. Interestingly enough, the Whismur paid no attention to Charlie’s Uproar attack. In fact, it appeared as if she didn’t hear it at all. What the heck?
“CHARLIE, NEVERMIND! JUST PECK IT!” Cecilia shrieked, but the Hoothoot couldn’t hear her over the deafening sound of the two Pokémon’s screaming match and continued her Uproar. Cecilia walked up to the Hoothoot, kicking her in the side to get her attention, and then pointed energetically at the tantrum throwing Whismur, making bobbing motions with her head in a crude imitation of a Peck.
The Hoothoot got the idea, and promptly shut up in favor of rushing towards the Whismur, stabbing her straight in the side with her beak. The Whismur, startled out of its noisemaking, rolled over a couple of times before getting up, tears starting to well up in her eyes. Cecilia really couldn’t care less, but she started to care when the Whismur started bawling her lungs out at an even louder manner than before. What the heck? She just wanted this to be over! Could they please just lose already so that she didn’t have to hear this any longer?
“One more time!” Cecilia yelled. Charlie was one step ahead of her, Pecking at the Whismur in an attempt to get it to shut up. The Whismur only cried harder at the pain that the Hoothoot’s attack caused, causing both Trainers on the battlefield to groan and cover their ears harder.
“Calm down! Leppa! Leppa, please! Can we please just have a proper battle?” Her Trainer begged. He seemed to be doing a lot of that lately. Cecilia felt a little sorry for him- a Timburr that didn’t listen to him, a Whismur that just screamed all the time…what was next? A Pokémon that didn’t even want to battle? Perish the thought.
Tired of being beaten up by Charlie, Leppa finally retaliated, Pounding at the Hoothoot with a tiny fist while still screaming all the way. Slowly, her earsplitting yells got louder and louder, reaching the point where Charlie could do nothing but stand there trying to block out the noise. Cecilia could feel herself starting to get dizzy from the sound- it seemed almost as if it were echoing all around her, surrounding her with a painful, high-pitched tone.
“No! I didn’t tell you to use Echoed Voice! Come on! Leppa!” Her Trainer was still trying to regain control of his Pokémon, but the Whismur was very clearly just doing whatever she wanted.
“Charlie! Do something!” Cecilia yelled. She would have been more specific in her order, but this dizziness was really getting to her, and she was actually having some trouble standing. The other Trainer wasn’t looking much better, too. His face had gone pale and he was hunching over, trying not to fall over.
The Whismur was continuing her Echoed Voice attack, which was steadily growing stronger as time passed. Charlie was wobbling a bit on the leg that she was standing on, but her status as a Pokémon meant that she was a little bit more resistant to these sorts of attacks. The Hoothoot gathered her strength in her leg and Tackled Leppa straight in the gut, sending her skidding across the floor.
Leppa choked, wheezing as the air was knocked out of her. She gasped a couple of times to get more air back into her system, but the momentary lapse in her Echoing Voice attack was more than enough of an opening for Cecilia to take advantage of. “Charlie! One more!”
“Leppa!”
Cecilia’s Hoothoot obliged, leaping up and letting gravity do all the work as she slammed down on Leppa’s body. The Whismur whimpered and tried to squirm out of the way, but wasn’t fast enough to avoid Charlie’s attack. All she managed to do was to turn around so that her belly was on the ground before the Hoothoot’s entire body weight was suddenly crashing down upon her, sending her into blackness.
The teenage Trainer stared at the clearly unconscious Whismur, a grin adorning her face. Another victory! There was only one more left now. She returned her triumphant looking Hoothoot back into her Pokéball, waiting for her opponent to do the same. He looked utterly defeated, as if he had given up before the battle even started.
“That was easy!” Cecilia declared with no malicious intention whatsoever. Her ears were still ringing from the Whismur’s sheer volume, but she was confident that she could handle whatever Pokémon that this guy had up his sleeve for last. He looked as if he agreed with her. The Trainer debating making an excuse- something like, “my Pokémon never listen to me”, but it seemed cheap to say that now. Even if it was true. If only he had saved his better Pokémon for this fight! The previous person had blown through his top three easily, but if he had been able to save them for this fight, maybe he would have won…
“…I…I guess so.” He admitted reluctantly.
“Well, come on! We still got one more, right?” Cecilia asked, bouncing on her heels. She was clearly riding a high from having won the first two battles so easily, but the Jujine Festival staff member was sure that he wouldn’t be the one to break her streak- not like this. She was starting to get a little annoying, though, but maybe Brandon or Kylie could beat her and teach her some respect…
“…Yeah…” He responded, tossing his last Great Ball onto the field.

Spewpa♂ Vivaldi
Level: 12 Ability: Shed Skin Moves: 5 Moveset: 1- Tackle 2- String Shot 3- Harden 4- Protect 5- Stun Spore
Bio Why hasn't this Spewpa evolved yet? It REALLY can't be bothered. Flying looks exhausting, Vivi would rather just nap. Wait, what? A battle? Ugh..
A Spewpa entered the scene, chirping loudly. He looked somewhat content, and almost as if he wanted to just doze off…the late autumn chill was uncomfortable for the Bug type, and he was huddling in his own fuzz in an attempt to get warm.
“We’re battling now, Vivaldi…” The Jujine Festival worker sighed. The Spewpa flinched, glancing back and forth for his opponent. He caught sight of Sasha, whom Cecilia had momentarily released behorehand, and his eyes appeared to bug out of their sockets. A Dragon? He wanted him to fight a Dragon?
The Deino didn’t seem to be aware of the Spewpa’s plight. He had consumed WAY too much food, and he found himself getting a little bit sleepy. Sasha belched loudly, much to Cecilia’s delight. “Good one, Sasha! I think that beat your previous record for loudest burp by a mile!” The Deino nodded in satisfaction, not paying attention to the opposing Trainer or his Spewpa at all.
“I’m…gonna start now…”
“Sure! Go ahead!” Cecilia said cheerfully.
“Vivaldi! String Shot!” He ordered.
The Spewpa sighed. Okay. String Shot wasn’t that bad. It only required minimal effort, right? The Bug Pokémon hacked out a sticky white substance, spitting the String Shot onto Sasha. The Deino found himself suddenly covered in something gooey and disgusting, and he had no idea in what direction it came from.
Sasha struggled under the String Shot, but it was sticking to his fur and scales, binding him and limiting his movement. He squirmed underneath the layer of string, but this only served to restrict him even further. Vivaldi looked quite pleased with himself, and bobbed his head in victory. Cecilia, however, was distraught at this sudden turn of events and shoved her hands in her coat pockets. “Sasha, Incinerate! He’s right in front of you!”
The Deino had been chewing on the String Shot when the command was issued. He lifted his head, white string looped around his teeth. He spit out a couple of test flames, making sure that he still remembered how to do the attack. Once satisfied, the Deino breathed out an Incinerate attack, burning the String Shot that was near his mouth to a crisp.
Vivalda, seeing the direction that the Deino was aiming in from his practice Incinerates, had been slowly shuffling out of the way, causing the Dragon Pokémon’s attack to miss. Sasha, not hearing any signs that the Incinerate had hit its mark, opened his mouth and sniffed the air. Wait- the Spewpa was a little bit to the left now! When did that happen?
“Come on, Sasha!” Cecilia complained. Her Deino whined in response. It wasn’t his fault that he missed! This Spewpa was just too fast.
“Tackle…?” Cecilia’s opponent scratched his head.
Said Spewpa was currently trudging slowly across the battlefield, trying to find a good angle to Tackle from. Finally deciding on a spot, he jumped forwards, headbutting the Deino straight in the side. Sasha felt his knees buckle, and his legs gave way from under him. He momentarily fell down, but quickly picked himself back up again. That had hurt!
Without a command, the Deino opened his now String Shot-free mouth to Bite the Spewpa, but the String Shot that was still wrapped around his body were slowing him down. “Harden!” The festival worker shouted, this time with a little more energy. Sasha was slowed down just enough for Vivaldi to shine silver, tensing his muscles and making his body harder before the Deino clamped his jaws around him.
Sasha had been expecting soft flesh underneath his Bite, but he certainly wasn’t prepared for what he got instead. The Spewpa’s body seemed to be rock hard, and the Deino cried out. He could feel his tooth throbbing from the failed attack, and he stomped his foot on the ground in frustration. “Yeah, yeah, I got it!” Cecilia said, waving away the Deino’s concerns with a hand. Harden, huh? That didn’t help against attacks without physical contact though, right? Incinerate was super effective against this Bug type, but would Sasha be able to aim like this? Maybe not.
“Shock Wave, then!” She said, changing tactics.
What? Another one that he wasn’t really sure about how to use? Whatever. The Deino concentrated, remembering the static energy that Cecilia had showed him. He was supposed to gather it…and then release it in a short burst around his entire area! The Dragon type let out a tiny roar, discharging electricity in a 360 degree angle around him. He had done it! Right?
“Protect!”
“Shoot!” Cecilia covered her mouth with her hands.
The Spewpa summoned a spherical blue barrier around himself, which the Shock Wave bounced harmlessly off of. Although it faded away only moments after the attack was unleashed, it had been enough to dispel the Electric move.
“That’s not fair!” Cecilia whined. “Only weenies use Protect! Fight me like a real man!”
“It’s….a legal move…” The festival worked sighed, running a hand through his hair and avoiding eye contact with Cecilia.
“Whatever! Sasha! Incinerate!”
The Deino sniffed the air once more, slowly getting more and more frustrated at the fact that Vivaldi was evading his every move. He hadn’t even landed a hit yet! He needed to get it right this time. Finding the Spewpa’s scent, the Deino turned in the Bug type’s general direction and let loose another Incinerate. This time, it hit its mark, and Sasha took pride in Vivaldi’s pained squeak.
“Follow up! Headbutt!” Cecilia said, not wanting to lose momentum since Sasha was already accurately facing the Spewpa.
“Harden!”
With the String Shot still slowing Sasha down, the Spewpa was able to get in the Harden before the Headbutt hit. Sasha rammed head first into a rock-hard Spewpa, doing more damage to himself than to Vivaldi. The Deino, feeling like he had just charged straight into a brick wall, shook his head, feeling a bit dizzy from the impact.
“Vivaldi, try a Stun Spore!” The festival worker suggested. The Spewpa, feeling a little bit more up to this battle than he had at the beginning, released a yellow powder from the top of his head, which spread throughout the air. The air in a four foot radius around the Bug type turned yellow with the density of the Stun Spore, and Sasha, still slowed by the String Shot, couldn’t move out of the way fast enough to avoid it.
“Oh my god, Sasha, why do you always get hit with these status moves?!” Cecilia shouted. Hell if he knew! Wouldn’t he avoid it if he knew why? The Deino snorted angrily. He felt his entire body freeze up involuntarily. Attempting to move a leg, the Deino gasped when he found out that the leg wasn’t listening to him. It stayed immobile, and the Deino spent a good five seconds trying to lift his leg and failing.
“Tackle it!”
Sasha was trying to figure out what the heck he was supposed to do when his body wasn’t even working when Vivaldi rammed straight into his side again. That was the same side as last time! Sasha was convinced that he was busting a rib or something, this was not going as planned.
“Incinerate him! Come on, come on, come on!” Cecilia shouted. She was clearly just as impatient as her Pokémon, and it was showing.
Her Deino, finally managing to break free of the paralysis enough to turn his head, spat out a bright orange fireball, aiming straight at the direction that he had been Tackled from. Without any practice moves this time around, the Spewpa wasn’t fast enough to escape the fiery attack, and found himself hit with the brunt of the flames.
Vivaldi breathed out some smoke, white fur singed from Sasha’s Incinerate attack. He stared with wide eyes at the Deino, who snorted some fire out of his nostrils. Vivaldi turned his gaze at his Trainer. Couldn’t he just forfeit? Take a nap? This wasn’t as easy as it had been going at first. His Trainer, sensing what the Spewpa was thinking but choosing to ignore it anyway, gave his next command.
“Vivaldi, Tackle!”
Without thinking, Cecilia blurted out something random. “Sasha, Headbutt!’
Both Pokémon turned towards each other and started moving towards each other at a pace that probably wouldn’t be able to be described as fast. The Spewpa was naturally slow, and the Deino was also naturally slow, but had the misfortune of being afflicted with both a String Shot and paralysis. Both of them eventually slammed straight into the other, but the Deino’s bulkier frame won out and Vivaldi was sent skidding across the ground with a force that was impressive for the little amount of momentum that the Deino had built up.
Cecilia leaned over to look at the Spewpa, but from the way that he refused to get up, it was clear that the battle was over. Cecilia cheered in victory, and rushed forward to congratulate Sasha. The Deino looked tired, but the teenager paid him no mind and draped herself over the Pokémon, nuzzling him repeatedly. Sammy, who had been napping while leaning on Cecilia’s leg the entire time, woke up with a start when the Trainer suddenly moved. She had no idea what was going on, but it was probably something good, right?
Defeated, the Jujine Festival worker returned his Spewpa, pointing with a thumb towards a break in the hedges on his side of the battlefield. “Congrats. If you, uh…wanna continue in the maze, it’s probably that way.” He said in a deadpan voice, obviously looking forward for the moment that Cecilia left.
“Thanks!” Cecilia chirped, returning Sasha back into his Pokéball. She had decided! She was going to spend some quality time with Sammy, and so Sasha had to go! Running past her former opponent and vanishing behind the hedges, she was off to hopefully not get stalled by any more dead ends in this confusing maze.

“Uh…have we been here before?”
Cecilia asked Sammy, who shrugged. Navigation was Cecilia’s job! The teenager tilted her head quizzically, staring at an empty battlefield identical to the one that she had just exited. She had taken a few turns, but she hadn’t been expecting to find another open space so soon. Even less expected was the fact that it was currently empty- there was no soul in sight.
“Maybe they took a bathroom break?” Cecilia asked, walking up to a wooden stool that was on the far side of the small field. She picked up a magazine that was lying discarded next to the stool- “Pokémon Training Monthly.” She read out loud. “Find out the top ten hints and tricks to make your Pokémon stronger! An exclusive interview with one of Lorelii’s top Trainers….”
She found herself a little curious, but she was on a strict time limit! There was no way that she could afford to just sit around and read a magazine! Maybe she should take it with her. Cecilia dropped the magazine on the floor. Whoops. Well, there went that plan. She wasn’t bending over to pick it up a second time. She stared backwards at the spot where the challenger (her) was supposed to be standing. So this was the vantage point from the opposite side? Nice. She kicked up some dirt on the ground. “Well, we should get moving.”
Cecilia was about to leave when she spotted something on top of the stool. She grabbed a plastic wrapper that was on the chair and opened it to reveal a set of saltine crackers that were stacked next to each other to form a square log. “Ooooh! Score!” She celebrated, taking a cracker and popping it into her mouth. “These are good, Sammy! Want one?” She offered a cracker to the Totodile, who gladly ate it.
“Well. Whoever was supposed to be here won’t miss it, I guess.” She shrugged. Taking the crackers with her, she went through the passageway leading deeper into the maze. Tracing the wall with her left hand, Cecilia skipped along the narrow passageway, making random turns whenever she felt like taking the opportunity. Sammy followed behind her enthusiastically- the Totodile wasn’t usually one for tight spaces, but this was a game, and it felt really exciting to be in a new place.
Cecilia bit down on another cracker, chewing it but not taking the entire thing into her mouth. Half a cracker stuck out of her mouth comically, and she made tiny nibbling noises as she headed deeper into the maze. No dead ends so far- which was great, because dead ends were so terrible!
“Damn, that kid really did a number on my Pokémon. Got him good in the end, though~”
Huh? Cecilia looked up with a half eaten cracker stuck in her mouth. A young adult turned the corner, suddenly coming into view. His curly brown hair was messy and sticking up all over the place, and he was holding back a yawn. Upon seeing Cecilia, his eyes glinted with something that she couldn’t quite place, but her gaze drifted down to his crumb-infested shirt- another festival worker?
“Oh my god!” She yelled, but it came out more as “orrgmgygdo” because of her full mouth.
“Pff-ha ha ha!” The man pointed and laughed at Cecilia’s unusual appearance. “Oh, man! Are you a challenger? Geez, right as I take a bathroom break, too! Oh my god, are you serious? Ha ha, you’re adorable! What’s with those crackers-“
Cecilia tried to respond, but her mouth was still full. She made an effort to swallow, but ended up choking on her food and started coughing. Sammy slapped her leg with her tail in an effort to help, to no avail.
“…Hey, kid.” He called.
Cecilia, finally managing to swallow her snack, answered him. “Yeah?”
“Those crackers…did you, by any chance. Get those from an empty open area? One with a stool and an issue of Pokémon Training Monthly?”
“Yeah!” She said, taking another cracker from the package and sticking it in her mouth.
“Kid…those were my crackers.” He said with a bright smile. The brown haired man continued speaking. “Hey…I’m Brandon. What’s your name, kid?”
“Cecilia.” She responded.
“Cool. Cecilia. So…you swipe my stuff while I run off to take a leak, huh? That’s how you play it?” He leaned forward in an intimidating manner.
“Yeah. I guess?” She thought out loud, still chewing. This apparently was not the answer that the man was expecting, because he burst out into laughter.
“Oh- oh man! That’s great! You’re still eating it!” He wiped a couple of tears from his eyes. Cecilia stared at him blankly. What was up with this guy?
“Are you friends with that gloomy guy from before?” She asked.
“Huh? Oh, Timmy? The guy who you were supposed to battle first? Yeah, no. We’re coworkers. Gotta make the dough somehow, right?” He said, swinging a jacket that he was holding over his shoulder.
Cecilia nodded sagely. “Yes. Dough doesn’t make itself.”
“Pff-“ He snorted, hiding his face behind his hand. “Oh lord Arceus, that’s just too funny!”
Did this guy just laugh at anything and everything? Cecilia kept watching him, which apparently unnerved the fellow. He cleared his throat, sticking a hand out for Cecilia to shake. She slapped his hand, mistaking it for a high five. Brandon obviously found this amusing, but held back his laughter with a snort. “Okay, kid. Let me strike you a deal. Every single person that comes through this maze- they all just want to get by as quick as possible. That battlefield over there? Boring. I know I’m supposed to use it and all, but wouldn’t it be so much more fun to just battle here? In this lil hallway? Sure, it’s a little more restricting, but restrictions are fun, yeah? I don’t really want to walk all the way back there anyway.”
Cecilia shrugged. The space in between the hedges were only about five feet wide, but did it really matter that much? Brandon was right next to a corner, but the way back was pretty much a straight line with a branching path about 20 feet down. “Okay!”
Brandon smiled, but this one had a smidge of mischief to it. “Okay! It’s settled, then! Three on three, as per usual! I’m sure Timmy boy explained all the rules to you, he’s kind of a stickler for them. Don’t worry though, I’ll make sure that we have a good time.” He pulled out a Pokéball, which he twirled on his finger impressively. Cecilia gasped, applauding at the trick.
“I’m cool, huh? Anyway, I guess I’ll pick first. You don’t have to use your little ‘dile if you don’t wanna.” He shrugged, throwing the Pokéball out.

Ivysaur♀ Tsundere
Level: 16 Ability: Overgrow Moves: 6 Moveset: 1- Tackle 2- Leech Seed 3- String Shot 4- Sleep Powder 5- Vine Whip 6- Take Down
Bio This Ivysaur is newly evolved and she is excited to show off her power, but the new growing bulb on her back is quite bothersome. As you might guess, there was a reason behind her name - she can be a bit cold and bitchy to strangers.
An Ivysaur appeared from the light of the Pokéball, kicking up the dirt on the ground. Her face looked grumpy, and she promptly shot a glare at Sammy. The Totodile, shocked at the sudden hostility, stepped back. She knocked into Cecilia’s leg, and looked up at the Trainer as if to beg, ‘please don’t send me against this one!’
Cecilia was deep in thought. Ivysaur was definitely a Grass type, so Sammy would be out. Either Sasha or Charlie could work, but wouldn’t it make more sense to throw out a Flying type, advantage wise? She remembered Grass having a lot of weaknesses, and Flying was one of them, right? Okay! That was that, then. She dug around in her pockets for Charlie’s Pokéball and released the Hoothoot, who fluttered around happily before settling down on the ground.
“Oh ho ho! Type advantage, huh? Sorry, kid. Type advantages don’t always work out like you would think. Tsundere, Leech Seed!”
Tsundere, huh? That was a good name. Cecilia thought to herself, momentarily getting distracted from the battle. Unfortunately, this sidetracking thought prevented her from ordering Charlie to dodge. The Ivysaur growled, popping a small seed out of her bulb. It flew towards the Hoothoot, landing on her head. The seed instantaneously sprouted and grew vines that wrapped themselves around Charlie’s body. The Hoothoot screeched at the foreign invasion, and soon her entire torso was wrapped in vines.
“Charlie!” Cecilia screamed. She knew what Leech Seed did- it was an annoying move that sapped the victim’s health to recover the user’s, and it was totally cheap! She hated that!
“You’re not going to make another move? Vine Whip!” Brandon ordered.
“Hey! I wasn’t ready!” Cecilia complained.
“I’m not like little Tim Tim, kid! I don’t just stand around and let my Pokémon take a bunch of hits! I would suggest you do the same!” He laughed, throwing his head back.
His Ivysaur extended a vine from the bud on her back, grabbing ahold of her opponent’s foot. Tsundere lifted the vine skywards, flinging Charlie up by her lone foot. Once the Hoothoot was brought significantly high enough, the Ivysaur brought the Vine Whip down, slamming her onto the ground.
“Hoot!” Charlie choked out as she collided face first with the floor. She coughed up some dust, head feeling dizzy from the rollercoaster ride.
“Once more!” Brandon said.
The Ivysaur huffed and agreed, lifting the Hoothoot into the air again. Cecilia bit her lip. She had to let Charlie escape somehow and prevent another attack! This couldn’t keep going on forever!
“Charlie, Uproar!” She ordered.
The Hoothoot, still ten feet in the air, opened her beak and started screaming- the high pitched noise sent shockwaves throughout the area, rustling the hedges that made up the walls of the labyrinth. Tsundere immediately let go of Charlie, retracting her vines to instead use as earplugs. She stuck the tips of her vines into her ears to try and block out the sound, leaving Charlie to flutter down unharmed. The Hoothoot was still struggling under the effects of the Leech Seed, but she kept up her Uproar attack anyway.
“Tsundere! Don’t let it keep doing this! Take Down!” Brandon ordered, but his command couldn’t be heard over the sound of the Uproar. Cecilia stared at the Hoothoot, who had her eyes shut tightly so that she could concentrate on making the loudest amount of noise possible. Maybe she should invest in earplugs, the Trainer thought as she held her hands over her ears. After that fight with the Whismur, she wasn’t sure if she would escape this labyrinth with her hearing intact.
Tsundere was clearly not enjoying this Uproar attack at all, and she attempted to wobble over to Charlie to get the Hoothoot to stop this ungodly sound. Unfortunately, the closer she got to her opponent, the more unbearably loud the Uproar was, and so she was forced to keep her distance. This was a good thing for Cecilia, since it was buying her a little time to think about what to do next. The Leech Seed was still in effect, and Charlie looked like she was tiring out quickly. How long did Uproar last? She couldn’t remember, but she didn’t think that she had that much longer to think.
Charlie looked half-dead so…maybe it was time for a switch? That would get rid of the Leech Seed, too. Cecilia was aware that MAYBE switching wasn’t the most honorable thing to do…but if it worked, it worked, right?
“Charlie, come back!” She recalled her Hoothoot back into her Pokéball, stopping the Uproar. Tsundere looked almost relieved, but quickly put her icy expression back on and stared at Cecilia. How dare she make her go through that terrible experience? The Ivysaur growled threateningly at the Trainer, but she didn’t notice.
“Okay, Sasha! Your turn!” Cecilia called, releasing her Deino. Sasha yawned. Another battle? So soon? The last one wasn’t a walk in the park, either, and he was kind of hoping for a break
Brandon whistled. “Ooh, a Deino, huh? Pretty nice stuff. Switching won’t save you, though. Probably. Maybe. Take Down!”
“Incinerate!” Cecilia yelled.
The Deino could feel the hedges on either side of him and Cecilia’s voice from behind him, so basically the only way to aim was straight forward, right? How convenient. He breathed out a stream of crimson fire, setting some of the nearby hedges on fire and essentially creating a barrier between him and Tsundere.
The Ivysaur, who was charging forward, stopped in her tracks when she felt a sudden heat. The Incinerate was coming right towards here, and there was no room to dodge to the side. The Ivysaur was mentally debating continuing with her Take Down, Incinerate be damned, or to turn tail and run. Her pride prevented her from running, but then again, she also didn’t want to be burnt to a crisp…
Unable to decide in time, Tsundere ended up standing straight in the middle of the Incinerate’s range, getting blasted with a face full of fire. She looked to the side, where a couple of hedges had lit up and were currently burning.
“Huh. Maybe we should have waited to go back to the battlefield after all.” Brandon mused. His boss was totally going to kill him. He had talked about how it had taken him all night to plant those hedges. The festival worker looked at his Ivysaur, who looked absolutely furious. Maybe he could use that to his advantage. Grass attacks probably wouldn’t do any good, since the Deino would just Incinerate anything that was in front of him, so the best possible course of action would probably be…”Take Down! Before it can get another Incinerate going!”
Tsundere, now that she was closer to the Deino that she had been with the previous Take Down, was sure that she could get in a hit before he managed to charge up another Incinerate. Being a newly learned move, Cecilia knew that it took a little more time to prepare than an already established attack, but she didn’t think that Brandon would notice that, too! “Sasha, Dragon Rage!” No matter what, Dragon Rage was still the coolest.
Sasha’s mouth started to fill up with violet flames, but the Ivysaur charged straight into his chest with a violent force, sending him skidding backwards. The Ivysaur winced from the recoil damage at the move, and was promptly greeted with a Dragon Rage to the face. Sasha panted heavily, clearly on his last legs, but fortunately for him, the Ivysaur fell to the ground, defeated.
“Oh my god.” Cecilia said, putting a hand to her chest. That was a close one! Charlie and Sasha were getting really tired, and Sammy wasn’t doing too well, either. Compared to them, Brandon still had two more fresh Pokémon to use, so things didn’t look that good.
He seemed to be aware of this fact, too, as the Trainer recalled Tsundere. “Hm hm, maybe you should have stopped by a heal point before coming to find me? Rushing through this maze won’t do you any good, you know~”
Cecilia blew a raspberry at him. She would totally win! That would show him! The hero always won! Even though she lost to that Dustox, and then to that Onix, but still! She was the hero! “I couldn’t find one!” She protested, pointing at Brandon accusingly. “Stop lying to me!”
The brown haired man scratched his head quizzically. Huh? There were supposed to be two Audino wandering around the maze between the three battles, but this girl was saying she didn’t find one? Weird. Oh, well. That just meant that Kylie wouldn’t be yelling at him later for letting so many people past him. It was just unlucky for Cecilia, he guessed.
“Well, not my problem if you don’t believe me. Harold, you’re up!” He threw his second Pokéball into the narrow hallway.

The Rhyhorn shifted his weight from side to side in a rhythmical manner. A battle? Cool! He loved battles! Cecilia’s eyes sparkled at the sight of the Rock type. “She’s so cute!” The Trainer exclaimed.
“Right? Adorable.” Brandon nodded, playing along.
“Okay! Okay…Rhyhorn….” She looked at Sasha, and then Sammy. Sammy, right? She gestured for the Totodile to take Sasha’s place and recalled her Deino back into his Pokéball.
“Why did I know you would do that?” Brandon shrugged, shaking his head with a smirk. It was all well and good, anyway. He only had to weaken all of her Pokémon, and then his final team member would just clean things up, anyway. Her Hoothoot and Deino looked exhausted, so that just left the Totodile. As long as the Totodile was looking worse for wear by the time the battle was over, it didn’t matter if Harold lost or not. He had full confidence. Eyeing the Totodile, he deduced that she was one of those types that couldn’t sit still, from the way that she was bouncing around in place despite her exhaustion.
“Scary Face, then Horn Attack!” He commanded.
The Rhyhorn sighed. He didn’t like using this move! It was so frightening, and fear-inducing, when all he wanted to do was to have fun! Either way, he guessed that he had to obey his Trainer, so the Rhyhorn mustered up the most intimidating face he could, trying to scare Sammy. The Totodile backed up a few steps from seeing the Rhyhorn’s expression, bumping into Cecilia’s leg.
The teenager was fanning her face, wondering when it got so hot inside the battle maze. Looking around, her question was answered when she spotted the stray hedges that had lit on fire from Sasha’s Incinerate- those were still there? Kind of crazy. Maybe she should ask Sammy to put them out before things escalated. It was too late, though, for this internal train of thought prevented her from paying attention to the current battle at hand, and Sammy was stabbed in the stomach with the Rhyhorn’s…well, horn. The quadruped had charged at full speed towards the Totodile, which predictably did not turn out well for her.
Sammy flew straight through the air, eventually colliding with a hedge that lined the back wall. Because Sammy got her head stuck in the hedges, Cecilia had to run over and tug the Totodile out of the tangling branches and back into place on the ground. Meanwhile, Harold was backing up slightly, ready to build momentum for his next attack. Brandon nodded at his Pokémon’s preparations.
“Fury Attack!”
Cecilia whirled around. Another attack already? This was no good- Sammy was disoriented and slowed down, so there was no way that she would be able to dodge a flurry of stabs. The hallway was narrow, too, so there was no room to sidestep, right? Unless…
“Sammy, jump!” Cecilia yelled. The Totodile leapt up as the Rhyhorn ran forward, landing squarely on his back.
“Stomp! Get it off of you!” Brandon responded.
“Water Gun!”
From her spot on the Harold’s back, Sammy fired a Water Gun straight downwards at her opponent, launching her upwards. The force of the Water Gun worked like a spring to propel her, sending her flying. The Rhyhorn was hit with the strength of a pressure hose, and was trying to recover from the devastating blow.
Meanwhile, the Totodile had landed on the top of one of the hedge walls lining the hallway, comfortably sitting with a nice vantage point of Cecilia, Brandon, and the Rhyhorn. Thankfully, Sammy had ended up in a spot that wasn’t currently on fire, and she clapped her hands at her front row seat to the battle that was taking place. Except, wait. She was part of the battle, wasn’t she?
“Water Gun! Keep using it!” Cecilia said, pleased at this turn of events. Brandon looked less so, however, seeing as the Totodile was in an unreachable location that was exceedingly easy to aim from.
The Water Type shot blast after blast of concentrated water downwards, aiming for Harold. The Rhyhorn was attempting to weave through the Water Guns, but the lack of space for horizontal movement was biting him in the rear end. Brandon, seeing that this was not going to end well for him if this continued, decided to shake up his strategy.
“Horn Attack the hedge!” Brandon commanded.
The Rhyhorn, understanding where he was coming from, charged towards the hedge that Sammy was perched on in an attempt to force her off. Unfortunately, the Rock type slipped on a puddle that was created from one of Sammy’s earlier Water Guns and slid ungracefully towards said hedge, knocking into it and hurting himself in the process. The vibrations from the collision between Pokémon and hedge caused it to become unstable, and Sammy fell off of her high vantage point due to lack of balance.
With its mission accomplished (in a somewhat unplanned way, but hey, it worked!) the Rhyhorn reoriented himself to face Sammy, who had fallen face first in the middle of one of her own puddles. “Harold, Stomp! End this!” Brandon commanded, but Cecilia wasn’t going to have any of it.
“Sammy, Water Gun!”
The Rhyhorn jumped surprisingly high, making a high arc with his body to hopefully Stomp on Sammy and crush the Totodile underneath his own weight. Sammy responded with another high-pressure jet of water, which hit the Rhyhorn directly on his chest and face. Effectively slowing down his momentum, Harold was knocked onto the ground, spluttering.
“Once more!” Cecilia shouted.
Sammy took in a deep breath, spewing out another stream of water. Harold, unable to move, was hit by another Water Gun. His knees buckled from underneath him and he fell to the floor, unconscious. Cecilia stared at the Rhyhorn’s unmoving body for a few moments before cheering. “Yes! Sammy!”
The Totodile’s chest moved up and down from her heavy breathing, and she could barely find the energy to celebrate with Cecilia. Sitting down for a moment to catch her breath, Sammy turned around and grinned at her Trainer, which led Cecilia to squeal with joy.
Not wanting to let Cecilia’s team get even a moment of rest, Brandon had already pulled out his third Pokéball. It was fine, because this one was going to end the deal. Throwing it up into the air and catching it with one hand, he pressed the button on the Pokéball and released his last team member.
“No time for parties just yet, kid!” He said as the white light from the Pokéball enveloped the area.

Wobbuffet♀ Lasqueesha
Level: 15 Ability: Shadow Tag Moves: 6 Moveset: 1- Counter 2- Safeguard 3- Destiny Bond 4- Mirror Coat 5- Charm 6- Encore
Bio Lasqueesha is a LADY, don't you touch her.
“Oh my god!” Cecilia exclaimed.
“Wo-bbuffet!” The Pokémon shouted, saluting with an arm.
What the heck was that thing? Cecilia had seen it before, and it looked somewhat familiar, but she wasn’t sure what it was called, or what type it was. Wobbuffet, maybe? That’s what it had said, right? Man, would she look stupid if she called it by a different name!
“Well, make your first move.” Brandon said, sounding smug for someone who was down three Pokémon to one.
He seemed confident! Did that mean that Wobbuffet had the advantage in this matchup? Cecilia looked at Charlie, and then her opponent. They were both blue- was Wobbuffet a Water-type? Maybe. But it didn’t really look like one, did it? Maybe she should switch. After all, Brandon had seemed confident. Did that mean that she shouldn’t be confident?
Cecilia held out Sammy’s Pokéball to attempt to return her Totodile, but the familiar beam of light was nowhere to be seen. “Huh? Is this broken?” Cecilia asked, hitting the Pokéball on her leg in an attempt to fix it.
“Don’t even try to switch, Lasqueesha’s ability prevents it. Doesn’t it?” Her opponent asked his Wobbuffet in a sickeningly sweet voice. He snorted at his own intonation, and his Pokémon joined him in hearty laughter.
“Ohohoho!” The Wobbuffet seemed to chortle, hiding her mouth behind her hand. How ladylike.
Starting to get annoyed, Cecilia clenched her hands into fists. She would show them! She would start the battle with the best attack that anyone had ever seen!
“Sammy, Water Gun!” She ordered.
The Totodile, still breathing heavily, sucked in air loudly and spat out a stream of water, thoroughly drenching Lasqueecha’s face.
“Mirror Coat!”
What?
The Wobbuffet’s blue body began to glow, and it took only moments before Sammy’s Water Gun turned around, unleashing a jet of water twice as powerful as the one that the Totodile had released. Both Trainer and Pokémon screamed as Sammy was hit square in the chest with this Water Gun 2.0 and was sent flying. The Totodile zoomed past Cecilia, who quickly dodged her Pokémon’s body, and was slammed ungracefully into the hedges lining the back wall. Again.
“SAMMY!” Cecilia ran over to check the damage on her Pokémon, but it was clear that the Totodile was out of the game. Her unconscious body was slumped on the ground, with no indication that she was alive save for her shallow breathing.
Cecilia turned in horror towards Lasqueesha, who seemed to be doing just fine even after taking that Water Gun attack. Brandon seemed to be having the time of his life, slapping his knee while laughing.
“Oh, man! Oh, man, your face! Holy shit, that’s too funny!” He said, wiping a tear from his eye. “Did you not know that Wobbuffet counters attacks? Seriously? It’s been too long since someone just attacked Lasqueesha front and center like that! Haha!”
“That’s not funny!” Cecilia protested, recalling Sammy back into her Pokéball. It wasn’t funny, and it wasn’t good, either. If Wobbuffet was good at counterattacks, then she would have to find a way to damage it without…hurting it? Was that even possible?
“Charlie! Show this hairy blow-up doll a lesson!” Cecilia screamed, throwing a Pokéball onto the field.
“Hairy- are you blind? Haha! Did you hear that, Lasqueesha?” Brandon howled. His Pokémon looked less than amused, frowning decidedly at Cecilia. “Sorry, kid, but Lasqueesha’s a lady! Don’t talk to ladies like that! Don’t you see the lipstick?”
“Boys can wear makeup, too! This is the 21st century! I don’t judge!” Cecilia shouted, sticking her tongue out at Brandon, who shrugged.
Meanwhile, the Hoothoot materialized in the makeshift hallway, staring at her new opponent. She was much taller than her, and looked a lot tougher. What was she supposed to do to this thing? The Flying type looked towards her Trainer, who motioned for her to go on. Charlie stared at the Wobbuffet, who did nothing. The two of them began a staring contest of a sorts, squinting their eyes at each other to see who could go the longest without breaking eye contact.
“Charlie, I said to attack, not to just stand there! Hypnosis!” Cecilia screamed. Maybe if she put her to sleep, she wouldn’t be able to counterattack?
“Lasqueesha, Safeguard!”
Charlie’s eyes glowed with a mysterious light as the Hoothoot attempted to mentally suggest the Wobbuffet to fall asleep. The Wobbuffet stared into the bird Pokémon’s eyes, supposedly getting lost in the infinite redness of her irises…but then woke up with a jerk as a sudden blue force field appeared around her, breaking the trance. Charlie tried sending more suggestive psychic waves into the Wobbuffet’s brain, but found that the barrier was preventing her Hypnosis from going through. The Hoothoot turned towards Cecilia, shrugging. ‘Try another plan’ seemed to be the message that she gave her Trainer.
Urgghghggh! Cecilia grit her teeth. Okay. Time for a new plan. Sammy’s Water Gun had been countered, but maybe a physical attack wouldn’t be? How would she know! Cecilia knew that it was kind of a stupid hope, but she could have dreams too, right? “Peck it! Aim for where it hurts the most!” She shouted. Exactly where it hurt the most, she had no idea, but maybe Charlie could tell?
The Hoothoot was starting to get sick of these vague commands. Nevertheless, she knew where she had sensed the Wobbuffet’s brain when she had tried the Hypnosis earlier. Launching herself forward with the last of her energy, the bird Pokémon bounced on the floor by the Wobbuffet’s side, abruptly changing direction and aiming for her tail. Thoroughly surprised, the Psychic Pokémon screeched as her tail was besieged with a flurry of Pecks. Panicking, Lasqueesha flailed around, slapping Charlie with her arms.
“Counter it!” Brandon yelled.
The Wobbuffet’s arms glowed white as she attacked Charlie with a final slap, knocking the bird Pokémon to the ground. “Not again!” Cecilia complained, staring at Charlie’s unmoving body. Brandon wiped a bit of sweat off of his forehead. He hadn’t expected the Hoothoot to go directly for his Wobbuffet’s weak point- if Cecilia picked up on that fact and decided to aim directly for it, he wasn’t sure if Lasqueesha could pull off a Destiny Bond in time for him to win.
Cecilia recalled her Hoothoot, thinking about what to do next. Obviously, something had happened when Charlie attacked that thing’s tail. She had started panicking, not able to pull off a Counter until her Trainer explicitly ordered her to. Was the tail important? Was it where she needed to aim? She thought so, but it wouldn’t be enough to just attack the tail. She needed something else. Cecilia tossed her last Pokéball out wordlessly, focusing intently on the battle.
Glancing around the hedge-formed hallway, Cecilia noticed that a few branches were still lit on fire from when Sasha had Incinerated Brandon’s Ivysaur. Could she use that as a distraction? Possibly. She really hoped that this would work, because otherwise she would lose, and losing was bad! Losing wasn’t winning. She looked towards Sasha, who was chewing on something (air? She hadn’t given him anything to chew.)
“Okay, Sasha! Do you smell him?” Lasqueesha glared at Cecilia. “I mean, uh, her? She’s not gonna attack until we do first, so just take your time, okay?” She said. Sasha nodded, sniffing loudly. Lowering her voice and hissing so that Brandon couldn’t hear her, Cecilia gave her next command. “Do you smell fire? From your Incinerates earlier? Yeah, I want you to push her straight into them, and then quickly, before she can retaliate, I want you to Bite her tail and don’t let go. Growl a lot. Make her afraid. I don’t care. If you get hit once, it’s over, so end it before you get hit!” Cecilia spat, eyes filled with determination. Sasha nodded. He thought he understood, but it was always hard to tell with Cecilia. In any case, he’d try his best. Maybe.
“Hey, you can stop it with your secret planning over there. It’s not going to help you any.” Brandon said, twirling a finger around his hair.
“Au contraire!” Cecilia said. “That means, on the contrary. I think. Sasha, go!” She pointed, even though the Deino couldn’t see her.
Sasha ran straight towards Lasqueesha. Brandon shook his head, disappointed. “Counte-“ He started to say, but cut himself off once he realized that the Deino wasn’t moving fast enough or at the right angle to be aiming a Headbutt at the Wobbuffet. Instead, he ran to her side and shoved her towards a burning branch, knocking the Psychic type off balance and leaving her with a mouthful of flames. Brandon clenched his teeth- a push wasn’t enough to Counter, and did the embers on the branches qualify as a physical or special attack? He couldn’t tell!
The Wobbuffet cried out in pain as she landed face first into a hedge filled with burning, sharp sticks. Growling and snapping intimidatingly, Sasha went straight for the Wobbuffet’s tail, taking the entire thing into his mouth and clamping down with as much power as he could manage. The Deino’s sharp teeth pierced through skin, and Lasqueesha was sent straight into panic mode as she felt fire burning her face and her tail being crushed in between a set of jaws.
Counter? Mirror Coat? Counter? Mirror Coat? Or Destiny Bond? Brandon felt his head swim with confusion as he tried to decide what to do next. Dumbfounded, he could only watch and stare as Sasha flung his head from side to side, swinging Lasqueesha’s burning body with his own movements.
“And, Incinerate!” Cecilia commanded. Sasha, still holding the Wobbuffet’s tail in his mouth, started to generate fire without letting go. Lasqueesha, now being burnt on both ends of her body, started screaming intensely. Her mental clarity was gone, and she was too panicked to make a move. Brandon’s eyes darted back and forth. Was that a Bite? Or an Incinerate? It looked more like a Fire Fang, but what was it really?
“Destiny Bo-“
It was too late. Lasqueesha’s blue body was starting to deflate. With all of her strength sapped out of her, the Wobbuffet effectively gave up, body going limp. Sasha let go of the Psychic type’s tail, knowing that his job was done. Panting and wheezing, the Deino sat down on the ground to take a break.
Brandon lowered his hand. It was over. He hadn’t been able to think fast enough. Laughing quietly to himself, the Trainer took out a Pokéball and recalled his Wobbuffet. “Congrats, you won, I guess.” He said, rubbing the back of his head. “You can pass.”
Cecilia frowned. She didn’t really feel like she had won. In any case, she would be moving on with the maze, so she supposed it was okay in the end. Shrugging, the Trainer walked forward, moving past Brandon as he stepped sideways to let her through.
“I’ll be staying behind to clean up this mess.” He gestured to the fire, as some of the branches were still burning. “I recommend you find an Audino to help you out. You won’t get past the next battle with only a half-dead Deino.” He was trying really hard to smile, but Cecilia could tell that something wasn’t quite right with it.
Deciding that it was probably better if she hurried up and left, Cecilia nudged Sasha with her foot to urge him to get up. Letting him follow behind her slowly, the Trainer looked back at her opponent. “Thanks.” She said simply, turning past the corner and power walking away.
Brandon took the jacket that he had slung on his shoulder, slapping the flames with it at an attempt to put it out. “Geez…” he said to nobody in particular, watching as the embers died out little by little.

“Thank you….” Cecilia drew out her words, sitting cross-legged on the ground. Her three Pokémon were spread out in a single file line against the hedges, waiting their turn patiently as an Audino healed their wounds. Cecilia leaned her face against a palm. That last battle had been close! From the looks of it, things were getting harder and harder as she travelled deeper into the maze. Wondering briefly what her third opponent would be like, the Trainer watched as the Audino’s hands glowed pink, restoring energy back into her companions.
Well, she was lucky that she had ran into an Audino when she did. It had taken more time than she hoped, but she was sure that she could still make it in time to get the grand prize. Cecilia looked up at the loudspeakers. They hadn’t announced anything yet, but that didn’t mean that she could afford to loiter.
“Audino!” The pink Pokémon cried out, clapping its hands together in an indication that it was finished. Cecilia glanced over to see all three of her Pokémon, yawning and looking more refreshed than they had been ten minutes earlier. Standing up and brushing some stray leaves from her body, Cecilia gave the Audino a pat on the head.
“Thank you!” She repeated to the Normal type, who bowed its head politely. Cecilia grinned at the Pokémon before recalling the rest of hers. Running the maze with Sammy by her side had been fun, but now she was determined to get to the next battle faster. Waving goodbye to the Audino and carrying on her way, Cecilia thanked Arceus that there were no booby traps or other mysterious obstacles in the maze. Because if she fell into another pit trap or was forced to navigate a room filled with poison gas or something, she would sue!
Not that she had a lawyer. Or could afford one. But she would find a way! Cecilia nodded to herself and took a right turn, running a hand along the hedges to feel the leaves make way underneath her touch. Peeking past another corner, Cecilia frowned to see a dead end. Typical! She always picked the wrong path. The Trainer backtracked a little bit, electing to continue straight instead of taking a turn.
Mazes were confusing. But if you moved fast enough and remembered which paths you took and which ones you didn’t, then it was easy enough to figure out the right path just through trial and error. That is, if the maze was constructed in a way so that it was obvious that a path was wrong before too much time was wasted.
Actually, this place was pretty big for something that was constructed for a local festival. Was it really that popular as an attraction? Cecilia hadn’t seen any other challengers here, save for the one that had been eliminated on the loudspeakers a little after she had arrived. Huh. Maybe she was just lucky, and had the entire place to herself! It would be nice to have a friend to go through it with, but the thought of having to take turns battling through the challenges made the Trainer roll her eyes.
She wanted battles, and she wanted them now! There was no time for waiting for someone else to finish, or something. Cecilia marched forward, glasses falling down her face. She was so engrossed in her own thoughts that she didn’t even notice when she entered yet another opening in the hedges, leading to a larger area.
“Took you long enough, challenger!”
Cecilia, still lost in thought, completely ignored the voice.
“Hey! I’m talking to you!”
What was that? That voice was kind of annoying, she was trying to think here!
“Kid! Don’t just ignore people!”
Wait, was that voice real? Cecilia looked up with a dazed expression to see a sporty looking girl in a tracksuit. A familiar t-shirt was worn underneath her jacket, marking her as a member of the Jujine Festival staff.
“Hey. Are you all right in the head?” She asked after not getting a response three times in a row. Cecilia bolted up, fixing her posture immediately.
“Yes! I am perfectly healthy!” She said, saluting. The girl laughed heartily at the response.
“Good! We don’t like weaklings around here!” She stated, stomping a foot down on the ground for emphasis. Her hand was clutched around a whistle that was strapped to a string around her neck, and she rested a hand on her hip.
Wow! So strong and confident! Cecilia’s eyes sparkled as she admired the young woman’s aesthetic. “I’m here, and I’m ready! I’m going to win!” She declared, pointing a finger at her opponent.
“Now that’s what I like to hear!” The woman nodded her head, long blue ponytail bouncing with her movements. “What’s your name, kid?”
“Cecilia!”
“Nice to meet you, Cecilia. I’m Kylie. Don’t think I’m anything like those two lazy part-timers that you met before, because I’m the real deal! A bona fide Trainer, if you will!” She declared.
“I wouldn’t settle for anything less!” Cecilia shouted, really getting into the moment. Yelling things was so much fun! She was saying all of the cool lines that she had seen on TV! She didn’t know that this was something that you could even say in real life! Or ‘irl’, if you were in the know. Cecilia was in the know. She had a blog and everything.
Kylie guffawed at Cecilia’s challenge. “Good to know! All right! Get pumped! This will be a three versus three battle, one Pokémon from each side on the battlefield at a time! Once all three of your Pokémon are done, you’re out! A goner! Pack up your bags and go home!” She slashed the air with her arms to make her point.
“I live far away, I can’t go home now!” Cecilia protested. She was being completely serious, but Kylie seemed to think otherwise.
“That’s the spirit! No time to do anything half-heartedly, you gotta put your ALL into everything!” She shouted, her deep alto resonating within the room.
“Yeah, put your all into it!” In contrast, Cecilia’s soft mezzo was not nearly as impressive.
“Are you ready? Because I’m ready to go! Let’s do this!” Kylie declared, blowing her whistle loudly. “Battle, begin!” She threw her first Pokéball onto the field.
Wait, already? Cecilia had to pick one too, then! Scrambling to match Kylie’s speed, the Trainer rummaged around in her bag and grabbed a ball at random, tossing it out onto the battlefield to see what came out.

- Battle Maze encounter!
-
 Nosepass♀ Barbara
Level: 15 Ability: Magnet Pull Moves: 6 Moveset: 1- Harden 2- Rock Throw 3- Thunder Wave 4- Volt Switch 5- Strength 6- Substitue
Bio Barb has never particularly had any aspirations of being a strong battler, her real dream is to learn to Sing and compete in contests, but she plays along with her Trainers wishes in the hopes of hitting the big time.
Two shapes materialized on the battlefield. One was familiar- a bipedal alligator Pokémon with a pair of strong jaws. Sammy! Cecilia didn’t realize that she had picked the Totodile’s Pokéball, but wasn’t disappointed with the choice. She took a look at the other side of the field, where a Nosepass was standing.
“Ouch, bad matchup.” Kylie grinned. “Well, it’s not like it’ll be a problem, anway.”
What? Why was she smiling? Cecilia didn’t see how things could possibly be any worse for her opponent. This matchup was unfair! Wasn’t it? Well, all was fair in love and war, and Pokémon battles definitely counted as war, so she assumed that she should take advantage of the situation while she could.
“Okay, okay! I’m going! Sammy, Water Gun!” She commanded.
The Totodile hopped up and down, her energy restored from the Audino’s earlier Heal Pulses. She opened her mouth wide and fired a high-speed jet of water towards Barbara, who appeared to be standing still and doing nothing at all to counter the hit.
“Barbara, Rock Throw!”
Huh? Cecilia blinked, and suddenly the Nosepass was holding a boulder. that she didn’t have on her person before. Where did she get that? The Rock type hurled her new weapon towards the Water Gun, but it wasn’t enough to completely stop the Totodile’s attack. That didn’t seem to be the goal of the move, though, which Cecilia noticed soon after.
The rock slightly slowed down the Water Gun’s speed, and it was catapulted towards the Nosepass along with the stream of water. Barbara caught the rock gracefully, using it as a shield to deflect most of the water. Cecilia’s mouth gaped open with surprise. Barbara threw her rock to the side now that it was no longer needed. She had escaped most of the brunt of the Water Gun attack, but it looked like the edges of her arms were damp.
“We can’t give up, Sammy! Bite it!” Cecilia shouted. Her plan was to move into close range with the Bite, and THEN do the Water Gun. That way, the Nosepass wouldn’t be able to counter with a Rock Throw, right?
Sammy moved in for the kill, thoroughly miffed that her Water Gun had done nothing. She raced towards the Nosepass, ready to sink her teeth into the Nosepass’…rock? Wait, maybe this wasn’t such a good idea after all.
“Harden!”
Too late to stop now. The Totodile chomped down on the Nosepass’ arm, but unfortunately for her, it was rock solid, strengthened even further with the Harden move. Sammy howled in pain. Was that feeling her tooth chipping? She clutched her jaws with her hands, trying to alleviate the pain somehow. Kylie, knowing that Cecilia was likely to try another Water Gun, decided that there was no time to spare.
“Barb, Volt Switch!”
What? Cecilia looked on in horror. It knew an Electric type move? This was totally unfair! Nosepass was a Rock type, why did it have freaking Volt Switch? This girl was good! “Sammy, get out of the way!” She shouted.
Barbara glowed yellow with electricity, ramming straight into the Totodile, who was too slow to avoid it. Sammy fell to the ground, and Barbara’s yellow form quickly retreated back to Kylie’s Pokéball, which she stuffed in her tracksuit pocket. Was this what she meant by ‘it’s not gonna be a problem’? That was smart! Really smart! Cecilia gaped. Covering a weakness and being able to switch out at the same time? She had been fooled into believing that she had the advantage!
Kylie threw out her replacement Pokéball, Sammy’s new opponent. Cecilia waited in anticipation- would it be a Grass type? An Electric type? She breathed a sigh of relief when she instead saw a Hawlucha pop out of the Pokéball, posing dramatically while it made its entrance.
- Battle Maze encounter!
-

Hawlucha♂ Hijo
Level: 13 Ability: Limber Moves: 5 Moveset: 1- Detect 2- Tackle 3- Karate Chop 4- Wing Attack 5- Roost
Bio The newest addition to the team, Hawlucha is still adapting to his role in his trainers party, but having inherited a strong competitive attitude from his father, he's sure to make his mark.
“Okay, Hijo, let’s run circles around this Totodile!” Kylie shouted, pumping a fist in excitement. Her Hawlucha agreed, punching a fist into his open palm. “Let’s start off with a Karate Chop!”
The Hawlucha, filled with excitement, flew towards Sammy, doing a somersault in midair and slamming a hand down. The Totodile hurriedly scrambled away, making it just it time to avoid the Karate Chop. Hijo’s Karate Chop had created a solid indentation in the dirt despite the dampness from the earlier Water Gun, which had been sprayed through the ground.
“Don’t let it get to you! One more!” Kylie shouted. Hijo grunted and leapt towards Sammy, who was caught off guard. The bird Pokémon slashed down at Sammy with an open hand, aiming right at her back. The Totodile was pushed to the ground, spitting out a mixture of soil and mud. She glared daggers at the Hawlucha, who stared down at the Water type with a condescending look.
Finding herself getting angrier by the moment, Sammy lashed out at Hijo, managing to Bite onto his leg. Kylie looked noticeably shocked at this turn of events, and she waved around her arms wildly. “Hijo, Wing Attack!”
The Hawlucha was struggling to free his leg from Sammy’s Bite, but he managed to process his Trainer’s orders anyway. His right wing began to glow white, and the Flying type started to whack Sammy with it repeatedly, relentlessly attacking until she had no choice but to let go of his leg.
“Sammy, it’s okay! Are you okay?” Cecilia asked. The Totodile shook her body, trying to get rid of the dizziness that came with being hit on the head so many times. “It’s fine! Come on, Water Gun!” She offered. Sammy nodded and spit out a burst of water, aiming to hit the Hawlucha’s injured leg and prevent him from being able to use it.
“Detect!” Kylie responded.
Hijo’s eyes glinted, and he quickly sidestepped the Water Gun, leaving Sammy and Cecilia speechless. The Hawlucha had moved too quickly to be seen with the naked eye, and it appeared almost as if he had teleported to evade the Totodile’s attack. Cecilia bit her lip. Amy’s Absol, Quell, had used the same move- except, she couldn’t use it for many times in a row, could she? Maybe it would be the same for this Hawlucha.
“Again!” Cecilia urged.
“To the sky!”
Sammy let loose another Water Gun, but the Hawlucha had already jumped up, catching a drift and soaring up above the Totodile’s head. The Water type had to tilt her head all the way back to see the Hawlucha. She aimed another Water Gun at Hijo, but gravity got the best of her and most of the water came sprinkling down onto the battlefield harmlessly.
This was a total stalemate! Cecilia stared at Hijo circling above Sammy’s head while she tried Water Gun after Water Gun in a fruitless attempt to hit him. Although the constant stream of water was thickening the mud on the ground, nothing was really changing about the situation. The only thing they could do was wait until Kylie gave another order, because they couldn’t keep doing this forever.
“Okay, now! Tackle!”
“Water Gun!” Cecilia cried.
“Wait, stop-!” Kylie tried to interrupt, but it was too late. Hijo was divebombing straight at Sammy, who fired yet another Water Gun at the Hawlucha. This time, the bird Pokémon couldn’t dodge in time and ended up crashing headfirst into a high-pressure jet of water, falling to the ground. The mud ended up cushioning the Flying type’s fall, but his landing ended up splattering the mud everywhere.
Standing up again, Hijo didn’t look too pleased at getting his pretty red feathers covered in mud. Without waiting for his Trainer’s next command, Hijo charged forward, Karate Chopping Sammy straight in the stomach. The Totodile was blown back, also landing in a mud puddle. Breathing heavily, Sammy got back up on her feet, glaring daggers at the Hawlucha, who was also looking rather worse for wear.
Kylie, noticing this, decided to make a risky play. “Hijo, Roost!” She ordered. The Hawlucha stared incredulously at his Trainer. Now? But he wanted to beat something up! He guessed she knew best? That didn’t mean he had to like it, though. The bird Pokémon stepped backwards, resting his feet on the ground to try and recover some of his energy.
Seeing her chance, Cecilia pointed at the Hawlucha. “Sammy, Rage!” She ordered. The Totodile, only too happy to comply, attacked with all of her anger, interrupting Hijo mid-Roost and slamming him down onto the mud. The two of them engaged in some mud wrestling for a while, with Hijo attempting to escape from Sammy’s pin. Although slight amounts of mud got caught between the Totodile’s scales, the damage was much more severe for the Hawlucha, whose feathers were weighed down by the substance. Every jab and lash that Hijo made towards Sammy only served to Enrage her even more, strengthening her attacks while the Hawlucha’s slowly got weaker due to the amount of energy it took to lift a mud-caked wing.
Hijo mustered up the last of his strength to lift a hand, Karate Chopping Sammy’s stomach one more time. Wheezing and coughing from the blow, Sammy’s pent-up Rage allowed her to grab the Hawlucha’s wing as it retracted, lifting up the bird Pokémon and spinning him a couple of times before slamming him down onto the mud-covered ground.
The Hawlucha wasn’t moving. Sammy pounded on her chest weakly in victory. Cecilia looked at Kylie, who had her face in her palm. “That Roost was a mistake…” She mumbled to herself. The woman recalled her Hawlucha, this time taking note of the battlefield, which was now muddied and dirty. Cecilia’s Totodile looked absolutely exhausted, so this was her chance to finish the job!

In all honesty, she should have Volt Switched out to Pythagoras first. Kylie had initially wanted to save him for last for a dramatic moment, but it was clear that she needed her best Pokémon to eliminate Cecilia’s Pokémon as soon as possible. Barbara was a bad choice with all of this mud, anyway. If she was lucky, maybe she would be able to mow down Cecilia’s entire team with Pythagoras. Nodding to herself, Kylie threw a Pokéball onto the field, releasing a Kadabra.
- Battle Maze encounter!
-

Kadabra♂ Pythagoras
Level: 16 Ability: Inner Focus Moves: 6 Moveset: 1- Teleport 2- Kinesis 3- Confusion 4- Thunder Wave 5- Thunder Punch
Bio Kadabra here has been with his trainer since day one, and had developed a strong bond and trust in his master. Having just finally evolved, he's eager to show off the new moves they've been practicing and make his trainer proud.
Cecilia clenched her fists, expression determined. She was going to make it! For some reason, she had a nagging feeling that she should switch Sammy out, but the Totodile’s Rage hadn’t dissipated yet, so Cecilia wanted to make the most of it while she could.
Sammy was still fuming, ready to fight Pythagoras. The Kadabra eyed his opponent, eager to begin the match. Cecilia, feeling the high-energy atmosphere in the room, couldn’t wait any longer and decided to begin the battle. “Sammy, Rage!” She ordered. The Totodile grunted, running towards the Kadabra…only to find that he disappeared from view completely.
“Huh? Where did it go?” Cecilia asked, spinning her head around to look for the opponent. She paused as she saw something out of the corner of her eye flicker into view- Pythagoras seemed to almost materialize out of thin air, way out of range of the Totodile’s attack. Sammy, frustrated about not being able to hit her opponent, tried to attack again.
Unfortunately for the Totodile, she was extraordinarily slow compared to the Kadabra. Pythagoras Teleported again, once again moving away from the Totodile. Cecilia had no idea what to do- her opponent was Teleporting way too quickly for Sammy to be able to get an attack in. Could she figure out a way to slow it down a little? The mud obviously wasn’t helping, because Teleportation was a mental thing, wasn’t it? Wait, that was it! It was a mental thing! “Sammy, just scream as loud as you can! Then, Rage!” She shouted.
The Totodile, confused but ready to take the opportunity to make as much mayhem as possible, started screeching as loud as her small lungs could manage. The Kadabra instantly stopped his Teleporting, as his concentration was broken by the sound. Sammy took the opportunity to run up to the Pokémon and headbutt it with all the Rage built up from her battle with Hijo. Pythagoras was knocked off balance, falling into a mud puddle.
“Confusion!”
Sammy clapped her hands in victory, attempting to do a dance with what little energy she had left, but was interrupted mid-choreography with a psychic blast that sent her flying. The Totodile landed face first into the ground, wiggling her feet a little bit before going still. Cecilia ran towards her Pokémon, tugging her out of the mud and laying her down gently. The Totodile was still breathing, but clearly unconscious.
“Rest in peace, Sammy. We will always remember you.” Cecilia prayed, raising her arms to the sky before recalling her Pokémon.
So…what now? She had Sasha, and Charlie left. Should she send out Sasha? Dark was stron- wait, was it? She couldn’t remember if Dark was good against Psychic, or if Psychic was good against Dark. Which one was it? Oh, man. She thought that Dark was good against Psychic, but she wasn’t actually sure. Maybe she should send out Charlie just in case she was wrong? Yeah, she would do that.
“Charlie!” She called out, throwing the Pokéball containing the bird Pokémon. The Hoothoot materialized in a burst of white light, landing on the ground on one foot. Feeling the muddy stickiness of the ground below her, the Hoothoot’s face scrunched up in discontent.
Kylie looked happy for some reason. Was that bad? Was it good? Cecilia didn’t know! She was just here for the snacks! Except, there were no snacks. She had finished the previous guy’s crackers. What was his name again? Brendan? Brayden? Whatever.
“Teleport!”
Wait, wait! The battle was starting! Shoot! Cecilia found herself scanning the battlefield again for any sign of the Kadabra. “Foresight!” She said. Would it work? She had no clue.
Charlie’s eyes glowed red as she glanced around. The Hoothoot tried looking for the Kadabra, but couldn’t pinpoint where it would appear next. As she spun her head 180 degrees to look behind her, the Kadabra suddenly appeared, startling the both of them.
“Thunder Punch!” Kylie commanded.
Cecilia was about to scream. Why did all of her Pokémon know electric moves? This wasn’t fair! She had to watch as Pythagoras decked Charlie in the face with a fist crackling with electricity. Charlie fell to the ground, also getting covered in mud. Cecilia found an idea forming in her head.
“Charlie! Roll around in the mud!” She screamed. The Hoothoot, although dazed from the Thunder Punch, managed to pull herself together enough to look at her Trainer like she was crazy. Roll around in the mud? Was she kidding? Cecilia urged her Pokémon to proceed, so the Hoothoot rolled her eyes, having no choice.
The bird Pokémon threw herself onto the ground and began to roll around, her spherical body lending itself well to the purpose. Kylie frowned. She could see what Cecilia was trying to do, but would it work? And it wasn’t like Electric attacks were the only thing Pythagoras could do, anyway. It would be fine!
“Before it gets any more mud on it! Thunder Punch!” She yelled.
Pythagoras gave a sound of acknowledgement and slammed a fist into Charlie’s mud-covered body. The Hoothoot bounced once before rolling into the mud again. Struggling to get up with her tiny wings, she finally managed to do so while glaring at the Kadabra.
Cecilia tilted her head to the side. It looked like that Thunder Punch had done a little less damage than the previous one, but it was far from neutered. Kylie noticed the same thing, and decided that a different attack might be suited better for the situation.
“Pythagoras, Confusion!” She ordered.
How could she counter this? The tactic of Sammy yelling had been somewhat effective, so maybe it would be the same with Charlie? “Uproar!” Cecilia said as loudly as she could.
The Kadabra was charging up a psychic attack when he was interrupted from his concentration by an intense scream. Clutching his spoon tightly, the Kadabra covered his ears at Charlie’s screeching. Kylie also seemed disturbed by the Hoothoot’s attack, but Cecilia found that she was slowly getting used to the loudness. After all of those Uproars, finally she was catching a break! Maybe earplugs would not be needed after all.
Could they just continue on like this forever? Eventually, the Kadabra would get weakened by the continuous Uproar, right? Cecilia hummed a jolly tune under her breath, not that she was able to hear it above the screaming of her Hoothoot. She didn't notice as Pythagoras eventually regained control of his concentration, using his spoon to focus a wave of psychic energy.
The Kadabra shot pink rings of light towards Charlie, whose eyes were closed to focus on making the loudest amount of sound possible. The Hoothoot was hit by the Confusion attack, falling face first into the mud once again. At this point, the bird Pokémon looked more like a ball of mud than an actual living being, but Cecilia told herself that she would give Charlie a bath later.
Except. Charlie wasn’t moving. Arceus! Was she down, too? Cecilia could only stare at the unmoving mass of mud that was Charlie as it lay there, immobile.
“Looks like your Hoothoot is out for the count.” Kylie said, satisfied with the outcome of the battle.
Cecilia recalled her Pokémon sadly, clutching her face in her hand. She was down two to one! But…at least the one that she had left was Sasha. She had total faith in him! She knew that he could do it! She really, really hoped that he could do it!
“Sasha!” She called out, throwing out the Deino’s Pokéball.
Kylie’s face fell once she saw the Deino appear. Shit. This wasn’t good. Psychic attacks did nothing to Dark types. This was bad, she should have saved Hijo for later on in the battle and not used him against that Totodile!
Sasha yawned. Why did everything smell so damp? And wet? Was that mud that he was feeling on his feet? Gross. He sniffed the air, trying to figure out exactly what he was up against.
Cecilia felt herself revived with determination. “Sasha, roll around in the mud! Just trust me! Just do it!” She shouted. The Deino snorted. Do what, now? No way was he doing that. “Sasha!” Cecilia cried, seeing that the Deino wasn’t moving. “Do it, or no dinner!”
Okay, now this was a different story. The Dragon type flopped down onto the ground, rolling to thoroughly coat himself in the wet substance. Kylie bit her lip- could she even do anything to this Deino anymore? Well, at the very least, she had to weaken it so that Barbara could come back in and finish the job.
“Thunder Punch!” She ordered.
Sasha was still unsure as to why Cecilia ordered him to roll, but his train of thought was interrupted as he was punched in the neck by his opponent. Sasha gasped for air as he took the blow, spitting on the Kadabra’s face as he did so. The Psychic type seemed visibly annoyed at this, and made a discontented sound.
Ah, he thought he could tell where the Kadabra was now that he had made that sound. Cecilia saw Sasha’s body language become more confident- now was the time to strike! “Bite it, Sasha!” She shouted. Her Deino jumped forward, sinking his jaws around the Kadabra’s arm. The Psychic type seemed distraught at this, and readied his spoon to Teleport away.
“Teleport!” Kylie ordered, her mental synchronization with her Pokémon shining through.
“Incinerate!” Cecilia countered.
The Kadabra’s Teleport was slowed down because of the distraction of the Biting Deino. Fortunately for Cecilia, it was enough for Sasha to breathe out a stream of fire, severely burning Pythagoras’ arm and bringing him down to his knees.
“And, Headbutt!” She continued.
Sasha was on a roll. He saw no shame in Headbutting the Kadabra while he was down, and rammed straight into the Psychic Pokémon’s stomach. The Kadabra fell over, landing on the mud with a sploosh.
“Yes!” Cecilia cheered, watching as Sasha sat down in a brown puddle. Kylie withdrew Pythagoras back into his ball, readying her last Pokémon. Well, it was all up to Barbara now, she supposed. Tossing the Nosepass’ Pokéball back onto the battlefield, Kylie hoped that it would be enough to secure a victory.

Barbara’s back, bitches!
The Nosepass, upon being called to the battle, started doing the robot to celebrate. “Not again…” Kylie grumbled. She glanced over at Cecilia, afraid that the Trainer would attack while Barbara was busy dancing. Instead, she found that her opponent was trying her best to mimic her Nosepass’ movements, albeit not as gracefully. Wow.
“Barbara, stop that!” Kylie scolded her Nosepass, who froze mid-dance. Cecilia did the same. “We’re in the middle of a battle here! Don’t just dance, use Rock Throw!”
Barbara seemed to almost sigh, which was strange because she was a rock. Cecilia wasn’t exactly sure how to counter this- would it work if she just told Sasha to dodge? “Sasha, get out of the way! It doesn’t matter what direction, as long as it’s not directly forward!” She hoped that was good enough.
Sasha, figuring out that an attack was headed right towards him, scrambled to the left, but Barbara saw his movements and aimed at right where she predicted he would be. The Nosepass was spot on, and Sasha was hit in the side with a large boulder, tumbling over into the mud.
The Deino picked himself back up, trying to locate the Nosepass’ location through his senses of smell and hearing.
“Shock Wave!” Cecilia cried out. There was no time for that, they had to strike now!
“Substitute!” Kylie responded.
Sasha released a round of electricity, hoping to score a hit on the Nosepass. However, the Electric attack had not hit her, but instead hit a ghostly mirage that she had left behind. The Deino, confused at the lack of reaction to his Shock Wave, turned towards Cecilia in bewilderment. His Trainer let out a warning shout, but it was too late. Barbara had appeared right behind Sasha as her Substitute faded, slamming him from the rear with a Strength.
“It’s not too late! Dragon Rage!” Cecilia shouted.
Sasha, quickly recovering, blew out a stream of violet flames at the Nosepass, who was too slow to dodge. She staggered at the force of the blow, taking it right in the face.
“R-Rock Throw!” Kylie said, trying to recover the situation.
“Keep going!” Cecilia shouted.
Barbara was too busy trying to withstand the Dragon Rage to even attempt a Rock Throw, as Sasha slowly intensified the power of his flames. She tried moving away, but the Nosepass’ slow stature made it easy for Sasha to subtly change the direction of his Dragon Rage to hit her. With a little help from Cecilia.
“More to the left!” The gray haired girl shouted, directing the Deino’s Dragon Rage so that Barbara couldn’t escape.
She couldn’t take it anymore. The Nosepass threw herself down into the mud, letting the Dragon Rage fly right over her head. “Good!” Kylie cheered on her Nosepass, but it was clear that the Rock type was getting somewhat drained. “Rock Throw!”
The Nosepass tossed another boulder at Sasha, who was once again, too slow to move away in time. The rock hit the Deino in the side, sending him buckling to his knees. Kylie seized her opportunity, issuing another command to Barbara. “Strength!”
Barbara moved in closer as fast as she could, which wasn’t very fast at all. It gave Sasha enough time to pick himself up, tired but determined. The Deino Bit at the Nosepass’ arm as she swung it to hit Sasha in the face. Barbara looked as stunned as a rock could look, trying to pull her arm out of Sasha’s grip.
“Okay, Dragon Rage!” Cecilia ordered. The whole ‘Bite and then some kind of breath attack’ thing seemed to be working so far, so why stop now? Sasha let out another Dragon Rage, almost enveloping the Nosepass in a blast of blue fire. Cecilia pumped her fist in victory as Barbara fell to the ground, unmoving. Sasha howled, celebrating his triumph over the Nosepass. Kylie sighed and recalled her Pokémon, slinging her towel over her shoulder.
“That was a good match.” She said, smiling at Cecilia.
“Really? Because I’m still pretty new at training, and I was sooo nervous! It’s like, whenever you battle, it’s so fast and like, FWOOSH! And then, OOGGH!” Cecilia gestured. Kylie had no idea what she was talking about. She nodded, pretending that she understood what Cecilia was doing.
“Well, that’s the last of us. It looks like you still have some time left, so maybe you want to get going if you want the best prize.” Kylie looked towards the exit on her end of the battlefield. Cecilia, face shining brightly, ran towards the gap in between the hedges, splashing in a couple of mud puddles along the way. Sasha, alarmed at the fact that Cecilia was leaving without him, hurried along quickly, breathing heavily as he was still recovering from the battle with Barbara.
“Thank you for the battle!” Cecilia shouted backwards, waving. Kylie smiled. She was a bit odd, but a nice girl.
Cecilia, not looking where she was going, slammed face-first into a hedge. Kylie looked away, pretending not to see in order to not embarrass the girl.
“I’m okay!” Cecilia yelled.
Well, okay, then. Looks like that little gesture wasn’t necessary. Kylie turned back towards her Pokéballs, frowning. What had she done wrong? Maybe she should have used Thunder Wave? Or maybe she should have taught Hijo U-Turn to be able to abuse match-ups…
Cecilia turned the corner, singing a small tune. Sasha was struggling to keep up with his Trainer’s longer legs. Finally catching up, he bit at Cecilia’s heels to get her to slow down. Unfortunately, the Deino missed, and he fell over onto the ground as Cecilia kept skipping.
“Oh, look, Sasha!” She said, pointing at another clearing. The Deino snorted. Look? Was she serious?
“Oh. Sorry.” Cecilia said, realizing her mistake. Sasha accepted her apology, but he could kind of understand what she was talking about. He could smell a couple of people up ahead, so he assumed that it was the end of the maze that they were doing. About time, too. He was exhausted and could use a nap.
“Heyyyyyy!” Cecilia shouted, bursting through the hedges to reach the clearing. A pair of people were sitting at a plastic table lined with all sorts of cool things, obviously the prizes for making their way through the labyrinth. Cecilia ran up to the table, not even waiting for Sasha to catch up.
“Congratulations on making it to the end…! Yayy….” The two said rather unenthusiastically. Cecilia didn’t even notice, instead bouncing in place out of sheer excitement.
“Okay, so you’re…uh…entry thirty four?” The man on the left asked, holding up a tablet. Cecilia nodded furiously. She thought she was thirty four. Wasn’t she? She couldn’t remember.
“So…you started at 12:34…so your time is one hour, forty three minutes. Not bad. That, uh…qualifies you for a second tier prize.” He checked a sheet of paper.
“What’s a second tier prize?” Cecilia asked energetically.
The man looked towards the other attendant, a similarly bored-looking woman. She looked at him with an expression that clearly said, ‘what, I have to do this?’ and then turned towards Cecilia. “Uh…for just making it to the end in time, you get a cash prize. So, here. This is yours. What’s your name?”
“Cecilia! Cecilia Lawrence!”
“Okay…here.” She handed Cecilia a check, which the teenager took with eyes sparkling. A check! This was so cool! It wasn’t cash, but it was like a real grown-up kind of thing!
“Um…as for your tiering prize…” The attendant scratched the back of her head lazily, looking towards her male colleague.
“You know what, just take whatever you want from this table. Nobody’s been able to get here so far, and I don’t really feel like getting rid of all this junk if nobody takes it. So…anything you want.” He said, resting his head on his hand.
Cecilia squeaked in anticipation. “Really? Anything?”
“Yeah. Anything.”
“Really?!”
“…Yeah. Just pick one already.”
“Sweet! Thank you!” Cecilia clapped, taking a moment to examine the prizes that were on the table.
There were a couple of random items strewn about- a couple of berries? Maybe that was a lower tier prize. Was that a TM? She had no idea what moves that they had, though! Could she ask? She should ask.
“What TMs are these?” Cecilia pointed.
“I don’t know, and I don’t care. Just hurry up and pick already.” The male responded, picking his teeth.
Okay. So maybe those wouldn’t be good if she didn’t know what they were. What if they were something her Pokémon couldn’t even learn! That would be bad. “What do you think, Sasha?” She asked her Deino, who had finally managed to catch up. He grunted in indifference.
“Hm…” Cecilia scanned the rest of the items. Evolution stones, Potions…wait. Was that? Cecilia picked up a lilac egg, small enough for her to lift, but big enough for her to buckle a little under the weight.
“Is this a Pokémon egg?” She screamed excitedly.
The woman grimaced at Cecilia’s volume and picked at her nails. “Yeah. It’s a-“
“Wait, wait! Don’t tell me which one it is! I want it to be a surprise! I’ll take this one!” She shouted.
“….Okay.” She responded, clearly happy that Cecilia was going to get out of their hair. “The exit’s that way.”
“Thank you!” Cecilia, with her new egg in hand, raced off towards the exit with Sasha hot on her trails. “I’m going to be the best mommy! I’ll take care of you, and polish your shell, and then I’ll feed you and keep you warm... You’ll be safe with me! Don’t worry! Nothing bad will ever happe-WHOA!“ Cecilia said right as she tripped.
Managing to catch herself and the egg before she fell, Cecilia spun towards Sasha, who was looking at her blankly. “I’m fine! I’m fine! And eggy is fine, too! It’s all good!” She insisted. The Deino would have rolled his eyes if they were visible under his fur. He kind of felt sorry for this poor egg. Hopefully Cecilia wouldn’t mess things up TOO badly.
