It was quite possibly one of the weirdest things that the trainer of less than two weeks had come across, and he wasn't so sure it was a good thing he captured the damned thing. Taking it to Harlowtown, it was quickly identified by the nurse at the Pokemon Center as being a Bergmite, a small ice type Pokemon that was... really just a chunk of ice on legs. He had figured that much out on his own of course, but what he hadn't realized was that this particular one did not enjoy the cold. Actually it downright despised it, and absolutely refused to do anything for Ariel while they were in the mountain he had gotten her from. He had gone back there, sure that it would be the best place to get in a spot of training with his new addition to the team. Only all he got was a bitchy anti-cold ice monster who refused to cooperate. Eerick wasn't very helpful either.
Murrow Marsh seemed like a nice alternative, and it gave him the perfect opportunity to head back home for a short bit before going to Jujine Town. The annual November festival was bound to be going on, and Ariel would have loved to have been able to go. But the marsh served no better of an environment for whom the trainer had named Chilly than the mountain seemed to. It would have to be somewhere else, which meant going the other way, not toward home and the festival that was practically calling his name. And although he should have expected it, it still surprised him, as well as annoyed him, when the Bergmite appeared to be completely thrilled with the idea of heading into the valley. He said sun and she merely bounced up and down in delight at the prospect of such a destination.
Both of his Pokemon took a look around, and while the ice chunk Pokemon was positively delighted, it was quite clear that Eerick found it to be rather horrifying. And the human supposed that if he were like the ghost type, then he'd find it to be just as appalling as well. "So I don't suppose you feel up to perfecting Magic Coat right now?" With the look of disdain thrown at him, Ariel sighed and held out the Pokeball he had readied. "Have it your way then. Return." In a beam of red light, the Frillish was sucked back up into the red and white sphere where he would be able to rest for the majority of this jaunt out. Maybe if they found some water then he'd be a bit happier out and about. For now though, it was best to just have him put away rather than throwing dirty looks and making moans of despair.
"Well at least you seem to enjoy it here more than the mountain. It's not all that bad here either, even with it being such an open valley. Luckily there's not much wind, or I imagine it would feel even colder." Chilly appeared to be hugging the ground and basking in the light cast down upon the area from the benevolent sun. "Yes, I get it, it's really nice for you. Do you even realize that that is very weird? Or is that why you were so miserable, because you were cold and everybody thought that you were a freak for being that way?"
His new Pokemon looked at him, her entire body almost appearing to have limped at his words, suggesting that she was sad to have to hear them. It was a little depressing to see that they had affected her in such a manner, and he rubbed the back of his neck as he mentally chastised himself for being so insensitive. Of course the other Pokemon she had been around thought that it was weird, and had probably made her out to be a freak of their kind. That was really sad, and even more so that as her new trainer, Ariel wasn't doing a good job at making her feel any less of one.
"Don't think about it, okay? You'll grow stronger, and when you do you'll be able to put up with the cold better than you can now. And I promise you that when you can, I will go up that mountain with you again, and you can show them what an awesome Pokemon you are!" He knew that Bergmite evolved, he had been told as much, and was even shown a picture of what Chilly would turn into. "You'll be huge though, so it'll probably be way easier for you to get up there than me. I'll just ride on you." Ariel grinned at that.
With his newest team member happier after hearing that, the teenager began to look around a bit more. It was really pretty here, even with winter creeping up on the land. Most of the plant life was still thriving, and he wondered if part of that was from the stardust that was rumored to have settled over the area. People in Harlowtown told him that it had long been told that a meteor had crashed into the island east of the valley, creating Pearl Crater, and unleashing special minerals into the air that fell into the earth of this very grassland. Ariel had at first questioned how true that could be, having clearly been living a sheltered life in West Honu his whole life. But now that he was looking at it, he could see why this legend would remain to this day one told by many in the southern parts of Honu.
Supposedly, this was the reason that so many of the ordinarily elusive fairy type Pokemon could be found here. Not that any were popping up in the young man's view right now. But there was something that did make an appearance, scuttling around a small pile of leaves on the ground. Recognizing it as a Sewaddle, Ariel gently tapped Chilly with his foot, eliciting a grunt and annoyed look from her. Glancing toward where he jerked his head, she merely stared at the other Pokemon before looking back at her trainer in a questioning gaze. He stared back her for a moment before cocking his head and mouthing the word "well" at her. Realizing what he was suggesting now, she rolled her eyes before beginning a walk over there, calling out to the other Pokemon.
A wild Pokemon appeared! Sewaddle Level: 8 Ability: Swarm Moves: - Tackle - String Shot - Bug Bite **Self Generated**
Rather than simply attack the unsuspecting wild Pokemon, Chilly took a much kinder approach, letting her know that her trainer wished to do battle with her. She explained that she was newly captured, and was still quite weak, relatively speaking. The Sewaddle seemed to understand this, and suggested that they have as friendly of a battle as possible. Just to help everyone out the best way possible, as he was perfectly fine with getting a bit more experience himself. With that out of the way, the Bergmite looked over at her trainer and nodded to signal that everybody was very much ready for this.
The bug Pokemon was surprisingly agile, rushing forward with a Tackle attack before his opponent had begun to move. Knowing that she wouldn't be able to sustain many attacks like that, she used a Harden, shimmering in light as the ice her body was made of thickened. And glancing over toward her opponent, she saw him shoot some kind of sticky threading that looped over her. Even though she was made of ice, it still seemed capable at keeping hold of her, making her movements a little difficult to do. None the less, she did move forward, hurling herself at the little leaf bug with a Tackle of her own.
As both of the Pokemon appeared to be ready to try to outdo one another in terms of body power, Ariel knew that that would not work. "I want you to use a Bite! Try to get him to flinch so that we can land in another attack right after!" He had to come up with some kind of tactic, and this one seemed to be the best he had right now. Of course that wasn't going to be quite so easy when their opponent decided to use a Bug Bite, bringing a harsh cry from Chilly whom snapped her little mouth around one of his legs. "Good! Now try to roll away and then fire off a Powder Snow!"
Yes, this definitely seemed to be something that she could do. And she did, tossing herself toward the side on the ground, her body rolling over a few times, managing to escape the threads of another String Shot that Sewaddle had fired. Coming back up, she saw the bug type coming at her and she took a deep breath before unleashing a Powder Snow on the part grass type. This seemed to definitely do quite a number on him, and he shivered uncontrollably, ice crystals forming around his body. It seemed that the bug was frozen!
"That's awesome! Harden up your body for a stronger Tackle attack to finish this battle!" Ariel was excited, and he gave a celebratory hoot as Chilly easily carried this idea forward, shattering the ice that had encased the other Pokemon, and leaving him knocked out on the ground. "Great job! You did awesome!"
Even though she was pretty pleased with herself for her victory, the Bergmite was also a bit sore from the Bug Bite. Flattening onto the ground, she stared at her trainer dolefully as he leaned over and inspected the area she had been bit on. It didn't look like it was too bad, but he knew that she would have to take a break for a little bit. All the while he was looking her over and making sure that she was alright, it never occurred to him that he could very well have been watched during the battle, and afterwards.

"You're not the smartest trainer out there, are you?" The voice of a male carried across the landscape to fall on Ariel's ears, causing him to turn toward it. "Not that you're bad. But you're really not that good either. Lucky though. If you didn't freeze the other Pokemon... well actually you still might have won, but only because you had type on your side. What you really need to do is some serious training, not just battling and hoping for good results. Doing things that way will only lead to you being a mediocre trainer at best."
Eyes still on the other guy, who was walking closer, the teenager bent over his Pokemon couldn't help but feel like he was being lectured. And he was pretty sure that he hadn't been looking for somebody to come talk at him like he was an idiot or anything. Mediocre? Who did this guy think he was? Probably somebody who had a lot of experience with training, based on how he was talking. And he was definitely older than Ariel, looking to be in his late twenties. He had dirty blonde hair, and facial hair as well, which might have made him look older than he really was. It was possibly he was in his early twenties, or maybe even just a few years older than Ariel himself. Not that that mattered. The only thing that the younger trainer was thinking about was what he had just been told.
"Who the hell are you? And what made you the expert in all things Pokemon? I think I'm doing pretty damn well. Chilly beat the Sewaddle, and it wasn't on luck or typing alone. Not type versus type anyways, I was just using his ice type and hoping for a nice shot of cold. And it worked. Soooo... yeah, I think that I know a little bit of what I'm doing." He had watched a lot of championships on television, so it wasn't as if he didn't know anything. Just because he had never seen a Bergmite before...
"Hey, chill man. I wasn't trying to offend you, okay? You didn't do terrible, really, but I can tell that you're pretty new to the whole training thing. Just thought I'd give you some pointers. But if you really think that you're all that on your own, then I won't bother."
The stranger turned around and started to walk the way he had come from, Ariel still glaring at him. But then he began to wonder if he might be stupid to just throw away the opportunity at receiving some tips from somebody who had obviously done this longer. He probably could have learned a lot from Sona. She was a really gifted trainer herself, being forced to rely on the tablet that she carried with her not only to communicate to other people, but to her Pokemon as well. It had seemed that they took their queues from the music that she played, notes that she placed on there. And if that was how she did things, then that had to have taken a long time to train her Pokemon. He could only imagine the amount of effort that would have to be put in every day, just to keep all of her Pokemon on top of what she needed from them. Now he was being given another chance to learn how to get his Pokemon to perform better than he could on his own and he was going to throw it away?
"Wait!" The stranger stopped and turned his head toward him, an eyebrow cocked in interest. "You're right, I am new, and I could use a lot of help. I guess I just thought that this was something I should be able to do on my own. Figure out how to train my Pokemon and come up with battling strategies and all of that. But maybe what I really need is to take some direction from somebody who has been doing this for a while already." He bent down and picked Chilly up, the coldness causing him to wince and immediately put him back down. "I shouldn't be putting my Pokemon in the position where they're so close to being defeated all the time."
Shrugging, the bearded guy began walking toward him again. "You might have just managed to come across a Pokemon that knew what it was doing. That can happen sometimes, where they're actually fairly smart and know how to battle. But it's not usually like that. And you might have picked on a Sewaddle that was actually quite a bit stronger than your Bergmite there. Like I said, you didn't do a terrible job. But you want to think about the best strategies for you. You should have tried to freeze the opponent sooner than that, for example, or at least put a damper on its moves with the Powder Snow in the beginning. It's super effective for a reason on grass types. That cold temperature would have definitely kept it from moving as quickly, and you would have done some serious hurt in the beginning, which would have resulted in poorer performance from the Pokemon in the long run."
Nodding his head in agreement also sufficed to show that he was paying attention, even as the new trainer began to think of how the battle might have gone differently if he had done that. The wild Pokemon would have been slower, and probably more on the defensive side, to keep from getting hurt a lot more. He wouldn't have gone for another Powder Snow, as that wouldn't have taught them anything in the battle. But the Sewaddle wouldn't have known that, and would have been prepared for another ice attack to finish things off early. Would it have been able to get out of the way of the physical attacks that Chilly had though? Probably not, and in the end he was sure that they would have been able to walk away with barely a scratch on them. It really made a lot of sense.
"I'll remember that next time, thanks. Powder Snow might be his best attack then, at least for now. And on types of Pokemon that might be more susceptible to the cold." He could already imagine the he'd be able to use the same kind of idea on flying Pokemon, although he knew that using it on other ice types would have no real effect. Nor did he imagine it would do much against fire, whom wasn't hurt much by those kind of attacks, and for a reason, as they were really hot themselves. You needed more than cold. You needed moisture as well.
"That's right. And for now, if you want your Pokemon to rest, which I imagine you do, then you should recall her back into her Pokeball. And we can head toward a small pond that's nearby. Just south of here actually, and the water is great. It'll do a whole lot in making her feel better." He watched as Ariel recalled Chilly before smiling and holding out his hand. "I'm Darren."
Presented with the now named stranger's hand, Ariel shook it and returned the smile. "I'm Ariel. Which actually started out as a boy's name. And I just started being a trainer last week. I wanted to go back home actually, Liloville, and then stop at Jujine for the festival they have every year. But when I got into the marsh, Chilly didn't seem to be pleased with that, and I really do need to do more with her." He waited for Darren to begin leading him, but he was waved on to start walking, so he nodded and did just that. "She actually did a lot better than I expected her to. And if we did what you suggested, I bet she would have been amazing."
"Yeah, definitely. I think that Bergmites are seriously underrated actually. People don't even really bother with them knowing what they evolve into, just because it's seen as such a difficult thing to achieve. But I don't share that sentiment. They're pretty awesome Pokemon."
Suddenly, Ariel was hit in the back of the head just then, his eyes rolling upward and closing as he slumped forward toward the ground. Darren's shadow fell over him as he bent down, grabbing Chilly's Pokeball and smirking down at it. "Which is why I'm taking it." He put the Pokeball on his own belt, rubbing it gently before walking away, leaving Ariel to lay there and... nap. Or whatever.

The Jujine festival was fun, like usual. Every year the town just north of Liloville threw the best pre-Christmas celebration. Sure, it might have been a month away, but there was no such thing as too early for the holidays. Unless you started before Halloween was even over, and then it was far too soon and you should just hold off for a while. But once November came, it was a mere matter of a couple of weeks before everybody was decorating and getting stuff ready for the best time of the year. And snow would be coming too, which was only more of a reason to get your lights up sooner rather than later, so you could get it finished before the weather took a serious turn for the not so pleasant.
Possibly more exciting than the festival was the week off from school that immediately followed that weekend. It was during this time that everyone was getting together with families, celebrating a time of thanks and blessings. While not given as much attention as Christmas, it was still an important time for families. Especially so for Ariel and his parents, whom traveled to Balsa Island, as their family was actually all there. This was where Ariel's parents both came from, and they returned to it every year for this week, and in turn, everybody would actually come to Honu Island during the Christmas season, as it was the most seasonal part of the region.
It was on Thursday that they all got together for a very large meal, before which they caught up with one another. And afterward came games and pie and other fun stuff. During dinner, Ariel's eldest cousin, Parker, talked about a mysterious illness that had been going around during the summer months. Just as strangely as it had appeared, it suddenly vanished, nobody feeling any of its effects, and thus bringing some scientists to wonder if it might have been a Pokemon. This was something that immediately caught the fifteen year old's attention.
"Not that anybody has any idea what sort of Pokemon would be able to actually make everyone sick like that. But it's an interesting theory all the same. Apparently the common thought is that it's a bug type, transmitting the disease with a bite. Since no other Pokemon have been affected by it, however, it makes it all the more difficult to figure out which species it is that might be doing it."
As Ariel had been hoping, one of his other cousins, Mikey, began to talk about the stuff he'd been doing with his own Pokemon. He had been a trainer now for more than a year, and he wasn't even two years older than Ariel himself. This was actually the person that he tried using as an example to his parents, to get them to allow him to begin his own adventure as a trainer. It hadn't worked, of course, and it was obvious what he was thinking now as his mother gave him that look that said he better not even think of beginning to get on that subject again.
Conversation droned on for a long while, Pokemon constantly cropping up, as was often the case. Each time, Ariel tried to place himself in the conversation, but was rebuffed by his relatives talking about them. Neither of his parents had Pokemon of their own, their household being the only one that the boy knew of in their town on Honu that didn't have a single one. So everyone else told him that he really didn't understand all the different uses for Pokemon yet, but that soon enough he'd get more of a handle on things. Hearing something similar to this after a discussion about a Combee farm that he tried putting an opinion on was the last straw.
"You know, this is why I want to be a trainer now! Everybody thinks that my opinions and views on things involving Pokemon don't matter, because I don't have any of my own. We don't even have a Glameow or a Growlithe at home." Silence fell around the table, everybody's eyes on Ariel, shifting over to his parents whom looked quite uncomfortable, and back to him. "It's true! My friends are all beginning to go out on their own. They have been since last year, and you know that eventually I'm going to have to be given the opportunity to leave too. Why not let me go now? At least I'd be able to get some experience and learn how Pokemon really act. Better than just going to somebody's house and helping groom a Ponyta or something."
At first there was silence, and then his mother broke that with a soft, but commanding tone. "We've discussed with you the importance of your education. Just because other parents allow their children to rebuke their opportunities with that to go running around with creatures all day doesn't mean we will. You're still just fifteen years old. I don't care that Brad left when he was twelve and Missy and Veronica took off together right after they were both fourteen. This is our decision as your parents and that's all there is to it. Now drop it before you ruin the entire time with our family."
----------*****----------
There was a loud groan as the trainer finally stirred, a throbbing pain coming from the back of his head. He hissed harshly and pressed his fingers to that tender spot, causing himself to wince. Pulling his hand away and looking down, he saw what appeared to be dried blood. Confused, he felt around where he felt pain and could feel what seemed to be a gash crusted over with dried blood. At least he didn't seem to be bleeding anymore, although he wasn't sure how long it had been since he suffered this wound. For a moment, he couldn't even remember why he would have such a cut on the back of his head to begin with, until things began to come back into focus.
"Asshole hit me," he grumbled, remembering how he had been walking in front of what he thought was a nice guy giving him pointers. "But what the hell did he do that for?" Frowning, he inspected himself, but didn't find anything missing from his bag. "Well he didn't take any of my stuff. So that's... that's... what the? No. No way. He didn't." Panic began to rise in his voice. "Chilly?! Chilly are you out here?!"
Realizing that Chilly's Pokeball was missing, the worst of Ariel's fears seemed to be coming true. He had managed to get one of his Pokemon stolen from him after putting too much trust in a stranger. But why wouldn't he have trusted the seemingly good guy who was going to help him with his battling? Didn't well seasoned trainers often a little bit of guidance to those whom could really learn from them? It really seemed highly likely that he was getting a legitimate offer. Not that that really mattered right now. What was actually important was the fact that his newest Pokemon had been snatched from him by a thief. And there was no knowing how long it had been since the jerk had taken off with her, nor if there was any way he'd be able to find them. For all he knew, he wasn't going to see Chilly ever again, and that brought about a horribly sick feeling to his stomach.
Already he was giving up hope, not able to see how there was any silver lining to this. What could he possibly do? Maybe call the police in Harlowtown, they would probably help him just for what he had done for them. But even if they would, there was no guarantee they'd be able to find the guy who had done this. Of course they could reach out to the police in Marei City. To be honest, that was probably where the freak was heading, as it seemed most likely that's where he had come from. Plus with the whole criminal thing that was prone to violence, that stuff usually came from a larger city. Not that you would have known it with the way things had gone down at the lighthouse.
Pulling his Nav out, he brought up a map of police departments and put out a call to the one in Harlowtown. "Hey, it's Ariel Humphrey calling from Seraphim Valley. Somebody knocked me out and stole one of my Pokemon!"
It wasn't long before he was done giving them a description of what the guy looked like. They were only too happy to help, not just because it was their job to, but also because of his service to the town that resulted in some good press for the police force there. And they were going to give a call to the precinct in Marei City as well, having the same sort of thought process that the teenage trainer had as well. He was told that chances of the guy being caught were actually fairly good, assuming he hasn't had the chance to get back to the city. There was also an officer that could be stationed outside of Murrow Marsh, just in case the criminal tried to slip past Harlowtown. So Ariel began to feel a bit better about things, his insides calming from the panic that had gripped him in the tightest vice.
Now that he was no longer shaken up by things, he was able to think things through a bit more clearly, and a plan of action began to unfold. While the police were busy making calls and stationing people in different areas, he could go about actually looking for this guy. It wasn't as if he was completely alone after all. He still had Eerick to help him with this dilemma! Releasing his partner from his ball, he immediately gave him a warning look, not wanting to hear anything that sounded like despair over being in such a sunny place.
"I don't have time for any of that. Somebody knocked me out and took Chilly and I really need your help right now finding her. Do you think you can do that?" When the Pokemon let out a cry of anguish and hugged his trainer tight, Ariel knew that he would help. "Yeah, I know, it sucks. But that's why we're going to find them and make him pay for what he did. You're faster than me, being able to float in the air and all that, so I need you to use that to your advantage. Try to find any sign of a person coming through her recently, and follow those as best you can. When you find a guy who looks older than me, with lighter hair and hair on his face, come find me. I'll do my best to keep up with you, but eventually you'll have me far beat. Alright?"
Eerick nodded his understanding and saluted his trainer with one of his long arms before turning and going off into the direction that Ariel pointed him to. He was still positive that the thief was going to try to get to Marei City, and so felt it was best sending his Frillish that way. Quickly beginning to follow, it was actually even faster than he had been expecting for the ghost type to disappear from view. Moving his bag from one shoulder to the other, he began to pick up his pace, reminding himself that Chilly was on the line. And he had just worked so hard getting her, or at least it had felt like a lot of work. It might have been more patience than that, but still...
Twenty minutes had passed, and he could see something coming toward him from the distance. Eerick! It was obvious that he had found them, and he was pretty excited, twirling about in the air and waving his arms in the direction that the criminal seemed to be in. Happy with his partner, Ariel praised him and began to head off that way, with the floating Pokemon leading, but not going too fast that his trainer fell behind. Within another ten minutes, they had come across the guy who had stolen his other Pokemon, sitting against a tree. Apparently he felt that he could take a bit of a rest. Of course it wasn't as if he left himself unguarded or anything.
As soon as it spotted them, the Vivillon that was cleaning its antennae gave a sharp cry that awoke its master. "Well well, if it isn't the idiot trainer wannabe. With another Pokemon? I definitely didn't think you had another one on you, or I would have taken it. Even better than the Bergmite. That one there will definitely make a nice addition to my group, don't you think?"
"Over my dead body," Ariel snarled. "Let's sweep this guy and his little bug!" He hoped that this wouldn't last too long. More than anything, he wanted Chilly's Pokeball back in his possession.

Darren Wants To Battle! Vivillon (Dust) Level: 12 Ability: Shield Dust - Damaging moves used by the opponent will not have an additional effect. Moves: 5 + 2 1. Tackle 2. String Shot 3. Stun Spore 4. Protect 5. Struggle Bug + Signal Beam + Aerial Ace
Sandile (Ripper) Level: 10 Ability: Moxie - Attack is raised by one stage when the Pokemon knocks out another Pokemon. Moves: 5 + 2 1. Leer 2. Rage 3. Bite 4. Sand Attack 5. Torment + Fire Fang + Counter
Darren, if that was even his real name, laughed and eyed his opponent up and down. "Sweep me and my bug? Oh you have got to be one of the slowest people I have ever come across. Let's face it. You don't stand a ghost of a chance." The pun brought a scowl to Ariel's face, to which the thief merely grinned wider. "Dust, get ready for an easy win. Use your String Shot to wrap that spineless fish up!"
Now even angrier with the comment about his Pokemon being a spineless fish, the robbed trainer roared. "Show him what you've got! Use Magic Coat now!" It was risky, asking for him to use the move that he had been teaching him, without perfecting it even further. But it was also something that he knew he wanted to do, hoping that Eerick would execute it perfectly. It would be the perfect way to show that this trainer couldn't easily bring things down for the boy he stole from.
Adrenaline was pumping through the part water type, and he was offended at the comment about being spineless. Even he knew what that was supposed to mean, and more than anything, he wanted to completely obliterate this guy and his little butterfly. So when he was asked to use Magic Coat, all he knew was that there was a reason for this and he just had to do it. There was no hesitation as he brought that special power up from within him, covering himself with it as it poured from the spout on the top of his head. It happened quickly too, and when it met together underneath him, it formed a solid barrier, and the String Shot ricocheted off of him, instead winding around the Bug type. Now caught up in her own threads, Dust let out a small sound of shock, fluttering about madly.
"Well I guess it's safe to say that the things you say will bounce off of me and come right back to you. Let's show him how you do with a Bubble attack!" Ariel was excited, and the level of his exhilaration only increased as the Vivillon seemed to shimmer, a small shield coming up that took the attack that had been commanded of his Frillish. This was going to be a real battle, something to show his skill as a new trainer, and he was confident enough in his abilities that he was sure he and Eerick would be the victors in this one. "Don't worry, we've got this! Get things wet!"
He knew that the Pokemon thief wouldn't really know what was going on, and he was right as he called for another Protect. But the shield fizzled out anyway, not that it really mattered. When he said get things wet, Ariel meant to use Water Sport in order to soak everything, including Dust. This would, and did in fact, mean that things would be even more difficult for the bug type, as water cascaded down over her wings, bringing a greater weight over them and dragging her down closer to the ground. It might have been a move that most used as a damper to weaken fire moves, or to help conduct electricity, but for this trainer, it was something to utilize in surprising tactics.
"For being an amazing trainer that had so much to share before stealing one of my Pokemon, you're really not doing all that great." His voice was taunting, and he could see the anger showing in Darren's face. "I'm beginning to think that you're really not all that experienced."
"Just you never mind about how much experience I have! It's still enough to take you out. You want to make things wet? Well then take this. Dust, use that water weight to give heavier blows. Hit him with your Aerial Ace!"
Aerial Ace?! There was no way this Vivillon should know that move unless... it was taught to her through a TM. With no time to try to counter the attack, all Ariel could do was watch as the bug type seemed to defy gravity and all that had been done to slow her down as she was immediately right there in Eerick's face, and used her wings to make slashes that cut into the ghost type's skin. He let out an eerie scream of pain before releasing a stream of bubbles, all of which slammed into the now grinning butterfly. Thankfully the Bubble was such a direct hit that it did critical damage, as seen in the way that Dust seemed to plummet toward the ground, smashing into it before weakly getting up and trying to fly up in the air. But she was so hurt that she could barely do more than flutter about a few inches off the ground.
"Use your Nightshade!" As soon as he said this, he made a dash toward the other man, whom was so caught up in the battle that he hadn't been expecting this. Up until this point, Ariel had been scanning the immediate area, trying to figure out where Chilly's Pokeball could possibly be. It didn't seem that he'd be able to ascertain that information himself, until the thief had raised his arms to run his hands through his hair after watching as his bug Pokemon slammed down into the ground. That was when he saw the Pokeballs lining his waist, and he knew that Chilly's would be there as well.
The robbed trainer slammed into the other, tackling him to the ground and snarling some profanities as his fist plowed into the criminal's gut. Nightshade ripped through the air and hit Dust just as brutally, keeping her attention away from the trouble that her owner was in. And knowing what was going on now, Eerick realized that he had to do everything in his power to keep the attention on himself. So he floated in dangerously close to the Vivillon, who shot off a Signal Beam that seemed to rip right through the ghost. While it might not have been effective in comparison to other potential attacks, it still hurt like hell and left him reeling for a bit. On the plus side, the butterfly seemed unable to perform the move again, though she wanted to. Eerick's ability kicked in and disabled the attack for the time being.
While the two Pokemon battled, the humans were struggling, with Ariel receiving quite the rough treatment himself. Hit in the face, he was sure that he'd be waking up the next morning with quite the shiner to prove that he hadn't had the best of times on this day. But if he thought that was the worst, then he would come to be sorely disappointed. For a knife was suddenly pressed against his throat, and the older male was grinning down at him, panting from the exertion of all the force. Eyes wide, the teenager stared at him, wondering if he was seriously about to be murdered right now, and he couldn't help but ask himself if this was really worth it. Just jumping this guy was a bad idea, and now it could very well cost him his life.
Dust came slamming into them then, after being hit by another Nightshade, and they were separated, though the knife almost slashed the boy's throat in the process. Lucky for getting out of that hold without being cut, he reached for the closest Pokeball and grabbed it, yanking it off of the belt that it was held on. He could tell, somehow, that it was just the one he had been hoping for, and he rolled away from the thief before getting to his feet, chest heaving as he breathed deeply. The Vivillon was knocked out, leaving Eerick as the winner of that battle, although he looked the worst for wear, as he had been hit with a Stun Spore.
"Return!" With his original partner put away to rest, he couldn't help but feel confident now. "You've lost. I have both of my Pokemon again, there's no way you're going to get either of them. Just turn around now and leave before you make a bigger fool of yourself."
The thief laughed, pulling another Pokeball from his belt. "Oh no, things are definitely not over yet. And you're about to find out just what it is you're really up against. Prepare yourself to face my most prized Pokemon. Ripper, I choose you!" With a burst of white light, another Pokemon was released between the two males, and as the brilliant flash subsided, the form of a Sandile stood between them. "My Pokemon here was specially bred for me, with egg moves that will leave you crippled. But if you give up now and just hand over your Pokemon I'll let you live. Don't, and not only will I defeat you in battle, but I'll kill you. I bet Argent will take me into their ranks without any question then."
Unable to believe what he was seeing, the trainer trying to defend himself and his Pokemon knew that he was in trouble. Sandile was one of the most resilient Pokemon there was, and the only good thing about this was that it was still just the basic Pokemon. It hadn't evolved yet, which would have made things so much worse for him. But he was still unsure if it would be a good idea to try battling him. Eerick might have been able to take him if he hadn't been beat down already and then paralyzed on top of that. He just didn't know if Chilly would be able to do well in a battle against a Pokemon like this. Was there really much of a choice though?
"Come on, show me that you've got this. I need you Chilly!" And with his own Pokemon released in front of him, he knew that he was taking a huge gander here. But he had to. There was no way he could just give in to this thief and hand his friends over to him. Sure, maybe the police would have been able to find him and things would have worked out that way. But there was the chance that they wouldn't, and then he'd never see either of his Pokemon again, and that would have been far worse in his opinion. Now he just had to hope that he wasn't about to be killed.
Smirking, the murderous man called for his Pokemon to bring his opponent's defenses down with a Leer. Knowing that that could bring any chance of a win down significantly, Ariel tried to think of a good strategy. And then he remembered with Darren had said earlier, about how he could use his Pokemon's moves early on in a battle to get a bit of a better advantage. With a smirk, he turned his attention to the man that was intent on stealing his way into Argent, whatever that was. "Thanks for the idea. Chilly, use your Powder Snow, and make it as cold as you can!"
As much as she hated the cold, the ice type began to focus her abilities, and then unleashed a powerful swirl of snow and cold. It wrapped around the ground type, and Ariel could see the way he winced at the biting cold. While it seemed to be very effective in that regard, it didn't leave the little crock frozen, which is something he had been really hoping for. Still, this was a good start, and he knew that he could follow it up with more promising stuff. He called out for his Bergmite to use Harden, so that she could raise her defenses back up to what they were. Unfortunately, while doing that, she was vulnerable to attack, and that's something that Ripper took to his advantage, coming at her and using his Bite attack.
Flinching, the ice type was left vulnerable once again, although this time the Sandile was given instruction to use Torment, obviously trying to make sure that Harden wouldn't be used again. It seemed that Darren wanted to be able to do good with attacks and not worry about them being less effective because of higher defenses. Lips pulled into a tight line, Ariel called out for a Tackle, which was successful in forcing the crocodile back a little bit. At least that would give them space, and Ariel felt more comfortable with that. But that small victory would be very short lived, as a Sand Attack was used, getting into the small ice chunk's eyes.
"Now finish her! Use your Fire Fang!" There was a sadistic look in Darren's eyes as he called out the attack, and a look of fire seemed to come alive within the Sandile's. He moved forward, opening his jaws, and Ariel could see the flames within his mouth. With a sour taste in his mouth, he called for his Pokemon to use Powder Snow, hoping to be able to bring a freeze to those flames. But all that happened was the snow went off mark, missing the target completely as he closed in and clenched those jaws around the smaller Pokemon's entire body.
Released from that fiery grip, Chilly staggered back and looked toward her trainer before collapsing on the ground, defeated. Unable to believe it, Ariel choked and stared, eyes fixated on his fallen Pokemon. Knowing what was coming next, he reached for Eerick's Pokeball, knowing he had no choice. But before he could even unclip it from his belt, there came the sound of a gun, a shot fired in the air. Freezing, he wondered if the other guy had just pulled a gun and killed him, but didn't feel anything, and didn't fall down in death or even pain.
Instead, an officer was there, gun drawn, pointed at Darren after taking a shot in the air, aimed in a manner so that the bullet was embedded in a tree nearby. "Put your hands up in the air! You're under arrest for the robbery of a trainer's Pokemon!" The officer moved forward quickly, and the thief's hands went up in the air, the Sandile frozen in spot, unsure what to do. "You have the right to remain silent!"
----------*****----------
Once again, Ariel found himself giving statements to the police, and he was being asked to remain available in the future. He'd have to give testimony, although because of the jurisdiction, it would be conducted in Marei City, which meant the trial would actually take a bit of time to get to. For the time being at least, he was still free to do as he wished, though he would be contacted sometime in the next couple of months.
"Hey mom! How is everything?" The trainer was grinning into the screen at his mother's face, glad to be talking to her for the first time in a while. She had heard of what happened, obviously, as it was news around the entire island apparently. It was the first time he had heard about the team named Argent, but apparently there were rumors being started about an organization by that name. Of course there was no reporter that could verify if any of these things were true, so far now everything was merely alleged. But his parents were still worried and demanded to talk to him face to face.
In the end, at least everything seemed to work out, at least for the most part. Both of his Pokemon were doing well, although Chilly had taken it hard at first that she hadn't succeeded in the battle. Ariel knew that it wasn't really her fault though, as she was weaker than the Sandile, and was at a disadvantage against the fire attack that was used on her. She cheered up a little bit when he had promised that he wasn't the least bit upset with her, and also swore to never let his guard down again. It was sad, knowing that he couldn't trust people as much as he might have before. But at least he had proven himself. He could say that he was more mature, and had what it took to be on this adventure on his own. And that was all he really wanted to do, to prove to his parents that he was perfectly capable.

Story EXP: 250 Battle EXP: 115 to Chilly | 180 to Eerick Other Rewards: Magic Coat seems to be mastered.Comments Poor Ariel isn't having the best of times! I really like the idea for this, I like it when people use Team NPCs, a lot. Just a reminder: we don't give ourselves levels when we self-generate encounters, the mod decides the levels - also, it's really helpful when you write 'self-generated' so thank you! Oh, and don't be shy about asking for random encounters to get that extra EXP.
