Welcome to the Lorelii Islands. We hope you enjoy your visit.
Lorelii used to be a war torn continent with fighting going back so long that no one even remembered the reasoning for it any more. A lone Shiftry is said to have changed everything, literally splitting the continent into the series of islands there are today and bringing peace to the region. Now that itch to fight is coming back, and it's time to start your journey. The League has only recently reached this collection of islands, and so have you. Catch, train, battle and conquer. Or set up a bakery by the sea. Become a Gym's janitor. Map, chart, explore and become the very best at whatever you want to do.

What was I doing? Where was I going? Why?
The same three questions every night, every day. Not once has an answer ever formed itself, dared reveal itself, to help out the forgotten. Thankfully these thoughts invaded the mind once or twice each day or night, and faded away just as idly as they arrived. The hardest part of the questions was what always punctuated their departure:
Who am I?
It was this thought that made the mind pause, which caused the body to go idle. How was it there was no answer to this question? It was one thing to not remember the answers to the others, but to this which equated one's very own existence? Gave the person a sense of identity and drove the person to be remembered- this was not something easily forgotten. It couldn't be gone.
I will remember.
Days passed in blurs; nights a figment of the imagination. But finally, an answer to one of many questions previously answered: a mirror. How did it never sink in that this was the new existence? This form, as wispy as the clouds which lazily passed far above, was the existence. Those eyes, so large on the spherical head, narrowed as if to make sure they were part of the discovered arrangement. And that smile! Was... Did that belong there?
Of course it did. With the help of this reflective surface, previously thought to be a mirror, the forgotten realized what it was- what it became:
Gastly. I am Gastly.
So many thoughts overwhelmed the startled Pokemon. Suddenly, everything made sense to it: the feeling of disorientation when the winds blew; the sensation of never quite being present despite clearly seeing all there was to see around it; the whispers of others unseen. Gastly was a Ghost. It was dead.
But what killed it? What killed him. The more the ghost wondered about itself, the more it started to identify. The spirit was a male, and if he stared long enough at his reflection, his gaseous form seemed to change. The black orb of his body wasn't just a body, but a head- and the poisonous gasses enveloping it! That wasn't just wisps of poison, but- but hair!
If he stared long enough, he thought he could see his face. The face that belonged to him so long, long ago. How long ago? There was no saying for sure how much time passed since his death, especially when the lost soul didn't know how long he wandered the world without knowing he was now technically existing in his own version of the afterlife. One thing was for sure, though: he used to be human.
Who was I? Why did he become a Pokemon? Why was he doomed to wander the earth as aimlessly as this, or was this not aimless at all? There was a purpose to his renewed existence. This was what one called 'a second chance'. Though it was not technically at life, for he was now a wayward Gastly soul, it was a second chance to do something. Whatever he meant to do before he died, Gastly would take care of it now.
First thing was first: remember.
He couldn't let this chance go to waste. Gastly was given the gift of all the time of the world, and it was now up to him to scour the world with a purpose instead of absently as he did before. So the spirit set off once again, the reflective surface now abandoned in a room long forgotten by the inhabitants of the building, in search of itself. Soul-searching, one might say if not for having found oneself already as a soul.
Hm. Was his sense of humor this bad back when he was alive, or did it dry-out after he lost that game of life? The Pokemon would find out eventually, and that eventually came slowly. Just as before, the days and nights were a blur in the ghost's ironic life, but it didn't come without its lessons.
'Hey!' A pause. 'Wait, I'm talking to you!'

At that, the Gastly stopped in his determined tracks, then idly floated around to see where the voice came from. To his surprise, there was no one around except for what appeared to be a deer. From nowhere, the name 'Deerling' came to mind. Did he just remember that? Shit, this memory-without-memory ordeal was confusing. For a moment, the ghost wondered if he should just continue on his way before the confusion of hearing voices piled onto his memory problem.
'What are you doing way out here, Gastly?' What?
O-kay, now things were getting a bit on the freaky side. There was definitely someone talking to him, because he was pretty sure there were no other wandering ghosts out in the middle of the day. But who was talking to him, and why did this Deerling saunter up to him in concern? What, did it sense how scared witless he was right now, or did it want to eat him?
Could ghosts be eaten?
'You okay Gastly? You look- uhh, well like, not to make a pun out of you or anything, but you look like you see a ghost.'
It was then that Gastly realized the source of the voice to be the Pokemon before him. There was a long moment of his staring at the Season Pokemon before the Gastly opened his mouth to reply, then closed it. Was it just him, or did he not remember how to talk? Because of this, the ghost attempted to shrug, a rather human thing of him to try, and instead bobbed in the air. Arceus, this poor thing probably looked the fool to a real Pokemon.
'Oh, you must be a newborn!' Here, the fawn happily shook itself before it danced around Gastly. 'Oh, I love newborns! I'll help you learn to talk! My name is 'Deerling'. Can you say 'Deerling'~?'
No, thought the Gastly as he thoughtlessly bounced in sync with the other; And I no longer want to try it with you. Still, this was certainly an interesting discovery. He forgot how to speak! As much as he wanted to scold himself for not realizing something so important sooner, he honestly couldn't do it. After all, it wasn't as if he tried to converse with anyone, ever.
Not until now, anyway. Perhaps he should make the attempt, now that the opportunity presented itself. Then again, as he willed himself to float still, maybe it was best he tutor himself alone. At the very least, without this possibly young Deerling. Gods, was this thing a child itself? And what was it rambling about now?
No, he needed to get away from this thing. If there were ever a time he wished for the ability to just disappear, this was the time. A vague thought, as distant as if it were on the tip of his tongue, whispered in his mind. It was almost as if he thought of this before; was that a memory? With the Deerling completely blocked out, Gastly focused on the thought before it could slip away on the breeze.
Screaming. Panic. Running. Yowls surrounding him. I can't be seen. I don't want to be seen.
'Gastly? Where'd you go?'
Gastly barely heard his unwanted company. For a ghost, he was pretty spooked by what he just witnessed- did he witness it? Did he imagine it? Gods, if he had a heart, then he could have sworn it was pounding in his nonexistent ears. That whole thing felt real, so real. It all happened before, and to him. He needed to get away, to survive. He wanted so desperately to fade away, to be unseen.
'Be careful newborn! You have to be careful!'
Despite his now fearful state of mind, the Gastly couldn't help but wonder what this Deerling was talking about. It acted as if it couldn't see him anymore. Hell, it was even walking away as if he wasn't hovering right there in front of it! Wasn't he right there with it? Wasn't it obvious at all? ...Why did he feel so lonely all of the sudden, as if the world didn't want to see him even if he could be seen?
The idea felt so wrong and ridiculous, Gastly felt himself gasp aloud, which caught the Deerling's attention. As the fawn spun around to see where that noise came from, Gastly breathed deeply. How long did he hold his breath? Now that he thought about it, did he even need to breathe in the first place?
'Oh, you're back! I was so scared for you you know!' It seemed the excitable Deerling didn't change in the least during the few seconds it couldn't see him. Oddly enough though, that was actually soothing. At least he could say the Pokemon didn't ignore him. Still, that was rather weird. Why did it act like it didn't see him until he breathed out loud?
'You look confused. What's wrong?'
There was a long pause as the Deerling tried to press its nose against him. Maybe it was just Gastly, but that was pretty awkward even for him. It felt as if no one was ever so close to him, let alone pestered him as much as this one Pokemon. Suddenly, he wasn't quite sure he was relieved. Geez; he needed to figure out whether he wanted this idiot's company or not. It was as if he didn't know what he wanted from people.
Strange. The very idea of it seemed to inspire another swirl of vague thoughts. After that scare with the screams though, Gastly decided to hold off on catching the new arrivals. Now that he had somewhat of an understanding on how to draw them in, the spirit would slowly explore the possible memories when he wasn't still shaken.
'Oh I know! You disappeared didn't you? Silly ghost! You shouldn't do that!' What. 'D'aw; you newborn ghosts are so cute! You didn't even know you could disappear, did you?'
By the Deerling's strange giggle, Gastly assumed his expression gave away his surprise. He seriously disappeared? Turned invisible? That would have been so useful back in the memory, when he was human. But that was when he was human, and this is while he's a ghost. Still, it was amazing to discover. There was so much he could do with this newly found ability.
But he wasn't about to thank the Deerling for explaining it to him; dismiss his inability to speak in the first place. Speaking of which, though not meant in pun, how did he manage it in the first place? He just... wanted it, right? Or was it the memory? He was so desperate to not be seen in that memory, and he became invisible here when he recalled it. Was it desperation?
Thoughtlessly, the ghost held his breath as he tried to recall that desperation from his memory. It was good the memory was still fresh in his mind. Instantly, that familiar despair, and to the surprise of the Deerling, he was gone. All right. It seemed that worked, so this was the time to take his leave. The last thing he wanted was to deal with this kid for the rest of the day. Silently, Gastly formed a hand with the poisonous gasses around him, and saluted the innocent Deerling.
So long, kiddo.

Though there was no way to say how much time passed since Gastly learned about his ability to disappear and inability to speak, the ghost could at least say the time wasn’t wasted. By the time he found another town to haunt, the spirit was fully capable of fading in and out of visibility. Needless to say, he was exploring the town unseen, and it was a good thing. The people in this town appeared superstitious and most likely wouldn’t appreciate a random ghost haunting them.
Gastly, however, appreciated these people. They seemed to be full of information he found to be important. Speaking of which, one particular group of people caught Gastly’s attention. They appeared to be gathered around a posted paper, and despite knowing he used to be human, Gastly couldn’t read it. Thank goodness the living seemed pretty talkative when it came to gossip.
“Poor unlucky bastard,” a man sighed as he shook his head. A few others murmured incoherently, but it sounded like a general agreement to the Gastly. "And we still don't know what happened," added another. There were more murmurs. "That gang is still out there, too..."
Gang?
Gastly winced as his thoughts focused on that one word, then bobbed unsteadily as if he were staggered. There was a sharp throbbing in his head suddenly, as if a knife was driven through his skull and twisted. The pain was excruciating, and accented every letter of the one word which seemed to increase in urgency within his thoughts: Gang.
As if to make matters worse in the Pokemon's head, the screams from a memory better left forgotten returned, and that fear of getting caught blossomed within him. This time though, there was more to the memory, and it nearly dropped Gastly as he struggled through the shock of remembering. By some unknown source of determination and willpower, Gastly managed to power through the memory.
Faces; familiar and unfamiliar. Dangerous and terrified. Smug and dead. Voices; gruff and mangled. Laughing and choking. Death. There was death everywhere, and those who remained standing were almost high off the adrenaline. "Look who found us." "Another victim-to-be." "Catch him." "Kill him." "Kill him!"
"They killed him," was a matter-of-fact announcement among the small crowd of people. For a moment, Gastly wasn't sure if that was part of the memory, or if he was back in the present. By the looks of it, the change of scenery from rocky outcroppings to civilization, he wasn't running blindly off-trail again. "Those damn cultists killed him."
"Rena," one of the men sighed as he tried to comfort the only woman in the crowd. "Enough of that, please." "I was there, Jonathan. I know! They killed Alastor!"
Shit. Not another one.
Gastly needed to get away from these people, but as much as he needed to, he wasn't sure he wanted to leave. So many memories returned just from hearing the word 'gang', and now that name? The spirit knew that name. It was important to him. It was relevant. But he couldn't handle another merry trip down memory lane. What if he blacked out?
It was a struggle, fighting off the thoughts which threatened to take him down. He already felt the edges of his mind blurring with the memories invoked by that name. This wasn't the time. This was too much. If he could just hold on a bit longer, Gastly would be able to find an abandoned apartment somewhere and conk out inside. Any place would do, as long as no one was around.
Alastor. This wasn't the time to think of that name. He needed to focus elsewhere. There was a fairly empty street up ahead. Maybe there would be closed down buildings around.
They killed Alastor. Who killed him? The gang members? Those people from Gastly's memory? Suddenly, the ghost was seeing spots. His vision was going dark as the night of another memory enveloped him. His feet pounded the rough ground, and slipped a few times on loose gravel. But Gastly didn't have feet anymore. He wasn't on a mountain, pursuing and being pursued. He was searching for somewhere to crash. He was, he was...

"Seems this lead's solid," he muttered to himself. From his position above the campground, he was able to watch the happenings of his targets. There were five of them, two of which were ladies, and all with prices on their heads for the murders they've committed. It was about time someone was right about the location of these punks.
And of course, Alastor was on his own. He couldn't help it though; circumstances happened to be in the favor of solitude, and that was just how the guy liked it. Besides, Puck would figure things out sooner or later, anyway. The kid was pretty good about knowing what Alastor was up to for some reason. It'd be pretty useful for the kid to show up with back-up. There was no way Alastor could carry all five of these losers to town after he was done with them.
"Here we go," called one of the ladies as she dragged a crying girl toward the middle of the campfire. "First toy of the night, kids. Have at it!"
There was a strangled muffle of terror from the tossed girl. As she stumbled and fell over, the other members of the gang laughed, especially when one of the guys casually kicked the tied up girl closer to the fire. It was sick, knowing these people would kill the kid. And for what? Because the girl was caught alone.
Worse yet, there were two other girls now beside the whimpering child. This was why flaunting money was such a stupid mistake. Why did kids never learn to be smart with what they have? If Alastor ever gets stuck raising a kid of his own, he sure as Hell would teach them how to lay low.
"Ready?" The lady from before inquired, which made the cop peg her as the leader of this ragtag team. "Aim- fire!" And with that, much to Alastor's horror, one of the three victims was tossed into the fire. If not for the rope tied around the girl's mouth, her screams would have woken the whole mountain. Instead, her muffled cries went mostly mute, but still somehow rang loud and clear within the cop.
These people were monsters. He needed to stop them before things escalated. He needed to get down there, save the remaining two rich kids, and find somewhere safe to hide them. They all needed to hide. They needed a place to lay low and stay alive. Alastor wouldn't let any more of this nonsense continue.
It was time he made his move.
A groan sounded in the otherwise silent environment as something bright lit the place up. After a couple rolls proved ineffective in banishing the light, a pair of dark eyes reluctantly blinked open. It took a few minutes for the world to finally swim into view, and for a moment, confusion settled in the mind. This didn't look like the mountain. It looked to be a rundown bedroom with nothing more than a mattress and a lamp on the floor.
Where was this, and why was he here? Wasn't Alastor just about to get those kids to safety? Or, or was this that safety, and he was just too exhausted to register the success? With a yawn, the guy sat up and attempted to stretch. He paused then, as if something just occurred to him: he couldn't feel his arms. Actually, he didn't feel anything-
Then it hit him: I am Gastly.
Alastor was long dead. The fact brought on a rush of memories from the previous day: hearing about his death, searching for someplace to drop dead in, and then the memory-dream. After so long of searching for answers about himself, Gastly finally started to figure things out. His name was Alastor before he died. Alastor Wolfe. Part-time detective, full-time cop, and a whiz at getting neck-deep into serious shit.
Well, doesn't this just take the cake? Now that he recalled his past and its mistakes, Alastor found it almost ironic that he was now a Gastly. A Pokemon made of gas, and was probably highly flammable. What, was this Arceus jabbing at him for his smoking addiction? Man, had he seen this coming, he'd have put more effort in quitting. A small smile formed on the ghost's lips as he thought of that, though it quickly faded as his mind wandered to his death.
It was, to no surprise, a gruesome one. Thoughtfully, a hand formed in the poisonous gasses surrounding the black orb that acted as his body, and covered his right eye. His forehead throbbed again, similar to how it did that night, as if a twisting knife were in the place of his eye. Arceus, the pain. Amazing how the shock of the carving- the excruciatingly thorough scraping- and the sickening sound of a 'pop!' didn't kill him.
Nah. It wasn't that, and it certainly wasn't the reason for his shirt having been soaked from a carved openings hidden beneath. Alastor didn't need to look under his shirt to know he wouldn't find his abs. It'd be a miracle if the guy even had a stomach left to tan. Of course, now he was dead, so maybe that miracle was out of the question.
Thank goodness he had both eyes now that he was a Gastly, and he was just a floating orb of darkness, so no scars. This must have been why he was given a second chance. This was his 'something': continue to protect kids from those twisted freaks. Most kids were crap at listening though, so he'd have a Hell of a time trying to get his point across to them.
Well, not that he could talk in the first place. Actually, now that he thought about it, would humans even understand him? Obviously he understood them as well as he understood Pokemon. Maybe he couldn't speak the Pokemon language because he's originally human, but surely he can speak his native tongue? Of course, right now he couldn't, but Alastor swore he'd take full advantage of this opportunity to do right.
Step one: figure out his vocals.

First, he'd practice with saying his name. Alastor Wolfe. It was easy enough to say in his head, so it wouldn't be that hard to make it work when spoken aloud. Just needed to sound it out, and try not to grimace by the garbled noises he'd make at first. With a deep breath, Alastor opened his mouth, and attempted to make a noise. To no one's surprise, nothing happened.
This was going to be a long day of practice.
Hours passed, and the Gastly still struggled to utter even a groan. Where were the vocal chords for a ghost? Did ghosts even talk? If the ex-cop remembered correctly, Puck's Spiritomb occasionally made noises, and that thing didn't look like it had much a mouth in the first place. If something as freaky-looking as that can do it, then a Gastly with an actual mouth can sure as Hell do it, too.
Luckily, as a spirit, he didn't need to eat or drink. As far as the guy was concerned, he could keep up the practice for days and not even need a wink of sleep to boot. Like this, he'd keep going and wouldn't stop til he remastered the art of speech. So he kept going. Alastor remembered what it was like to talk; to hold a conversation. He could picture it in his head, and his mouth instinctively formed the words.
If he could will himself to go invisible, he could will himself to speak. it was simple. It was a noise that even a baby could make. The Deerling from who knew how long ago was even able to talk to him, and that fawn was clearly as much a 'newborn' as it thought of him! It was pretty irritating, now that he thought about it. Something as stupid as a deer could do something he couldn't.
But he could. He'd say something. He get a word out. Just one. One word. Any word. Alastor. Wolfe.
"...fe... rd..." Alastor glared at the boarded up window for a long moment. All right. He got something out, which was progress even if his gurgles didn't make any sense. Got a 'Wolfe' and a 'word' partially figured out. Syllables were probably his issue. The spirit wanted to say too much at once, and he just needed to figure out the basics. The alphabet then; single syllable for each letter.
It was going to be a long and arduous process, but by Arceus, Alastor would get the ball rolling.
Once again, the Gastly lost track of the passing time. All he knew was the slow progress of his speech. Somehow, the trick revealed itself to him, and it turned out to be relative to his breathing. Similar to when he first turned invisible, he just needed to breathe out the words til he got a better handle on what he wanted. Soon as he figured it out, it would become as natural as being invisible, and by now, that was the most natural state of existence for the ghost.
"-stor. Am... I. I am. Al. As. Tor. Stor." Damn it all, this was probably even more frustrating than his whole searching-for-memories shtick. At least then, he was blissfully ignorant of what he should have known. Still. The guy came this far, so he may as well push it til he broke through. Dark eyes alight with frustrated stubbornness, Alastor tried again with his name. It was a damn good thing he was dead; the guy had all eternity to get this right.
And he would. In time, he finally figured out how to sound out his first name, then his last. But that was as far as his ability went before he hit another dead end. All right, now he needed another approach to the lesson. If he recalled correctly, kids learned to speak by hearing others' conversations. Or maybe that was total bullshit cause he vaguely skimmed the parenting books he read because he lost a bet way back when; whatever.
There was one way to find out, and the Gastly fazed through the window to test out his idea. It didn't take long for him to find people. Malls were always filled with bustling people, and never failed to be full of noise, too. This would be where he picked up more words. As he trailed after small groups of people, Alastor mouthed the words to himself and practiced producing the right sounds. This was slow progress, especially when his mind wasn't as fresh as a toddler's, but it'd get him somewhere.
The mall closed many times with Alastor still inside, and reopened with the ghost patiently waiting for more people to stream in. In the nights, while alone, he listened to music and fiddled with talking toys to keep everything fresh. Even tried singing along when he learned lyrics and tried to greet each familiar toy. In the mornings, Alastor even practiced speaking to the workers since he knew everyone's names by this point.
Of course, he never actually approached anyone to hold a conversation. Once he started talking, his words came in whispers in people's ears. A soft greeting, the occasional murmur of advice of what to buy or not to buy. As far as the Gastly was concerned, he was getting pretty good at this now. That, or he finally lost his mind since he tried talking to toys just to pass the time at night.
It was definitely time to bail out of the mall before he really did go insane.
Back in the abandoned building he woke up in, Alastor decided to explore. Though he wasn't an expert, this place was in surprisingly good condition for an abandoned building. The mirrors weren't marked up, and the paint on the walls didn't peel. Maybe he could claim the place as his headquarters. Yeah. This place could work.
Alastor stopped at a mirror in the hall, then looked himself over. No one would be comfortable conversing with a Gastly. He used to be human, right? Maybe he'd figure out how to look the part again. Until then though, the Gastly smiled at his reflection.
"Alastor Wolfe, I hereby grant you a second chance to do your job. Don't screw it up twice, dead man."

Days, or perhaps weeks, passed as Alastor floated around town in search of information. He needed some sort of lead on where his killers were, what they were up to... and how Puck was doing. It must have been hard on the kid to lose his first partner, but it wasn’t like no one didn’t see it coming. Alastor had always been hasty and not even just a little rash. Still, the Gastly felt bad for leaving Puck behind. The least he could do was apologize before he completely disappeared from the cop’s life.
Time passed, and still nothing new came up. Because this was Alastor, the ghost was losing his patience. This was his days as a human all over again: a whole lot of nothing, Finally, he left. Alastor was done waiting on information he was sure was out there, and not in the local town. Hell, maybe he’d get what he needed by heading up to the mountain where he died. Though the idea sucked, it was something.
So he went.
As usual, the guy was utterly clueless about the time passing by him. It was almost nice, being dead. The Gastly didn’t need to concern himself with time, or sleep, or any of the many necessities of the living. He could keep doing what he did best without a pause to the beat of his drums. Alastor liked this; liked it a lot. How ever much time it took to get where he needed, it still seemed to be less than what it could have been in his living days.
Soon as he arrived tot he mountain, streams of painful memories threatened to sink him. All right, so this would take far more willpower than he originally thought. Still wouldn't stop the guy from getting where he wanted and figure out what he needed. With a visible grimace and a fire in his eyes, the Gastly bobbed his way through trees and foliage in search of the camp where everything started.
"Let's rest here," decided Ara as he dropped his bag off to the side. Soon as his bag was down, a familiar mouse hopped onto it and got comfortable. Ara couldn't resist the smile as he watched his starter; the silly girl was so cute. "Convenient there's a fire-pit already here." The boy continued to smile as his Dedenne squeaked an agreement. As far as they knew, this much have been a popular pit-stop for travelers.
And why not? The view was phenomenal from where they sat. It must have taken them a couple weeks to finally reach this point, and it was well worth the trip. Given their excellent timing, the pair was able to enjoy the beauty of a sun setting in the distant horizon. The gentle blanket of fiery red-orange appeared to spread across the treetops of Tevil Forest, and almost appeared to draw the flying-types down to roost in the foliage of the clustered trees.
The way the sky seemed to light up, too. It was breathtaking. Such captivating beauty as the sky was painted shades of orange, red, and yellow; especially with the clouds lazily passing by and basking in the deeper tones of red and orange. Russet-gold eyes delighted in the sights, and seemed to express the appreciation by capturing the light. By the looks of it, his eyes had turned to shining gold, with a hint of a fire warming the colors into shape.
Even the boy's hair, now exposed due to the fedora having been set aside, appeared to bask in the fading light. If one were to look at Ara now, the boy may be mistaken for a woman of heavenly origins, as his hair lit up and practically glowed a soft yellow. It wouldn't be difficult to imagine the youth with a halo round his head, though it would be completely out of place.
It would also be a mistake to think him a woman, as Ara was fully male. But such were unnecessary details to contemplate, and the youth emphasized it as he pulled out his phone to snap a picture of the sunset. Another part of his life he'd save forever. It'd also be nice to have ready for when he ran into his sister in the future. He was sure Vila would love it. Oh, and he supposed a picture of himself wouldn't hurt either, especially when Daisy seemed to beg him to take one.
Once he was done taking photos, the boy carefully slid his phone back into his pocket, and leisurely stretched. The day was long and the trek difficult, but pretty good overall. Tomorrow would be just as great, if not better. There were caves to explore further up, which he was aiming for, and in need of a curious Trainer and partner. Perhaps the pair would get lucky and find a new teammate while checking out the mountain.
But that chance would have to wait. For the time being, Ara needed to set up a proper camp for his partner and himself. It wouldn't do to have his Dedenne sleep in the chill of a mountain breeze after all! Pleased with how well things were going so far, Ara informed his partner of his intentions, then set off to gather firewood. He wouldn't be very far, still in the fairy's line of sight, but still a fair distance since there wasn't much cover on the mountainside.
"Daring kid," a voice commented from seemingly nowhere, which greatly startled Daisy. The Pokemon, suddenly on alert, quickly sat up to look around. As far as the girl could see, there was no one around. Was that comment her imagination? It couldn't have been, though. The voice was distinctly masculine, and one she was certain to be unfamiliar. Was someone watching them nearby?
"Nene?"
Daisy waited for an answer, ears perked and tail still. She waited for a solid two minutes before deciding the voice must have traveled on the wind. Pokemon had sharp senses, she reminded herself. What sounded so close may have actually been somewhere above or below. Things were so different in the outside world compared to the professor's lab. It was a lot more exciting, and though exhausting, still quite exhilarating.
"Here we go," announced the Trainer as he dumped the gathered firewood near the fire-pit. Once he noticed the mouse look to him curiously, Ara flashed his partner a grin and prepared to build a campfire. "Behold! We humans can make fire, too!" And with that, the boy got to work on setting a few sticks aflame. After a bit of patient work, the wood caught, and Ara gently fanned it until more took to the flames.
Needless to say, Daisy was impressed. This wasn't something she saw often, humans producing a flame how Pokemon did; amazing.
"And now, I'll make us a small meal before we rest. Sound good, Daisy?" With the affirmative voiced by the mouse, Ara happily went to work. The kid knew how to prepare, though he was keenly aware of how meager his supplies would get as they spend more time on the mountains. They'd have small meals for a time to come, unfortunately.
Thankfully, Daisy didn't seem to mind all that much, if at all. She was still wide-eyed and curious about this expansive world outside of Jujine Town it seemed, and it encouraged Ara to explore more and more of Lorelii. If there was one thing he could accomplish without worry of failure, it was broadening Daisy's horizons. This thought, though so simple, put Ara into a good enough mood to hum a few tunes.
Tunes which were noted by more than just the Trainer and his starter Pokemon. Wide smiles formed in the shadows while Ara ignorantly shared the made meal with his Dedenne.
It wasn't long before Ara and Daisy were ready to catch up on sleep. The sun was finally set too, which left the campfire as the only source of light. This was the perfect time to strike, and by the sound of it, the advantage was not about to be lost. At least, not until the Trainer and his Pokemon were startled awake.
"Get outta here, kid!" "Wha- huh?"

Ara sat up immediately to look around, and was startled to see moving shadows. What was going on? Was that a Pokemon? Whatever it was, it was definitely heading towards him, and this put his mouse on edge. The Pokemon was chittering angrily, as if that would scare away whatever approached. Nothing worked though, and in the relative darkness of the night, Ara could see eyes glint in dangerous excitement. Distinctly human eyes.
"Don't just sit there like a dunce- move!"
There was that voice again, and it was followed by grumbles and shouts as more dark shadows seemed to shift. Unsure of what was happening, Ara fumbled his way out of his sleeping bag, snatched his bag, and motioned for Daisy to follow him. There was nowhere for him to go, unfortunately. Like the rookie he was, Ara set himself up near the edge with the idea of waking up to a sunrise.
With all this confusing excitement going on, Ara briefly wondered if he'd get that sunrise. Thankfully the boy didn't linger on this thought, and instead turned to look around. Now that his eyes were adjusting to the dark, he could tell there were humans about, and two of them appeared to each be dragging something. What was going on?
"Looks like we had a third girlie after all, boys!" A woman's voice laughed, which oddly sent shivers down Ara's back. She sounded... deranged. It was as if the woman wasn't entirely present, and instead allowed herself to be possessed by something a bit maniacal. "And she go the fire ready for us too! What a sweetheart~" Though there was one gruff grunt of displeasure, Ara heard mostly pleased noises from these people.
What was she talking about?
"Would you idiots stop playing with yourselves and catch her already?" There were more huffs as one of the figures appeared to collapse. While the woman audibly sighed, Ara turned his attention to the cliff-side he previously used as a shield from the wind. Since they were all distracted with something, maybe Ara could climb his way out of this mess. "Before we lose her! Hurry up!" That last word was emphasized by a male's groan.
Ara didn't dare pause to look. Instead, he motioned for Daisy to climb up to sit on his backpack, and prepared to free-form climb. Nothing like a bit of risk in the early hours of darkness; who didn't do this once in awhile to escape what sounded like kidnappers? Man, hopefully these weren't actually kidnappers.
"Move faster, kid. I can't keep them off you all night by myself." "Who are you?!" "The only reason you're still alive."
Ara shut up immediately at that, and put more effort into his climbing. His mind was racing as his body automatically moved to overcome the obstacle that was the cliff wall. Knowing he could trust his body to do this, the Trainer tried to comprehend everything that was happening. Though the shouts of "catch her, catch her!" made it difficult for Ara to think of anything more than fear, he did his best to piece things together.
It was nighttime up in the mountains where he and Daisy were virtually alone. Except they weren't alone, because some group of people were around and after them- no, him. They wanted Ara. Group of somebodies wanted to catch Ara. And some unknown force did something to one of the kidnappers and it stalled for him to start climbing and it was now talking to him. The force was talking to him.
"Where are you?" Ara couldn't help it: he needed to ask. The voice sounded close by, and didn't seem to echo. It was as if this force was at a distance close enough for casual conversation, but a quick sweep with his eyes revealed nothing but darkness. As his hands and feet desperately carried him further, Ara dared to look back to see if someone was actually below him, and almost regretted it.
The sense of vertigo was astounding, but it didn't cripple Ara. Granted, he was frozen for a moment, but that was to be expected. How was one supposed to climb when looking back, anyway? Without allowing himself much time to take everything in, the Trainer returned his attention to the wall which he clung to, and resumed his climb. It was a Hell of a risk, and the unknown voice chided him for doing it.
"I got your back, kid. No one's getting close without my say-so." "How?"
If it bothered the boy that his previous question went unanswered, then he didn't voice it. It seemed his recent question was to go ignored as well. These things would just have to be pursued more properly when Ara wasn't clinging to the edge that may be the salvation to his life. Whatever brought this force to his aid, Ara thanked it. Who knew what could have happened otherwise?
"You idiots!" The woman from before screeched as Ara scrambled over the top. "How could you let her escape? After her, you fools!"
"How much time do I have?" "Enough. They have to climb too." "Good."
And without further comment, Ara encouraged Daisy to hide in his bag, then turned to blindly jog into the night. Moments like this made the Trainer glad his schoolmates pushed him so hard in sports. He didn't even break a sweat from the climb, and his breathing was as steady as his pace as the darkness blurred around him. His thoughts melted away with the scenery, and his body went on autopilot as he made his way further and further from the campsite.
Then a thought struck him stock-still. The campsite. The people. They were dragging things. The things had been whimpering. Those 'things' were alive, but what were they? Pokemon? Humans? Ara thought of the woman's words, willed himself to put the pieces together, and spun around to face the direction he initially fled. Those were humans. They were girls.
"What's the hold up?" "I have to go back." "What?" "I have to help them!"
Without warning, a strong force rammed against Ara, which made the young man stumble back before he regained his footing. Before he could say or do a thing, the boy felt the force hit him again. A third one was to follow, the Trainer knew, and instinctively he side-stepped. When he felt nothing push him over, Ara dared to start his return.
This was short lived however, for the Trainer promptly tripped over something. It felt as if his foot had been caught by a root, but when Ara reached down to remove it, he found nothing. Was that the force again? What was this thing, and how did it do that? In fact, what in Arceus's name was he dealing with, even?
"Listen kid. You can't go back. It's suicide."
Ara scrambled to his feet and desperately looked around. Where was it? Where was this thing talking to him, and how was he going to get past it? Much to the Trainer's frustration, it seemed to understand exactly what he was thinking, and promptly knocked him back down. How could it do this? There were two girls down there in need of him!
"Why me?" "What the hell are you talking about now?" "Why save only me? What about them?!" "We're in no position to help ANYBODY kid! Get it through your head! You got a mouse for a pet and I'm dead!" "Wha, what?"

Dead? A shudder ran down Ara's spine as the following silence gave him time to let that sink in. This force, whatever it was, was d-dead? Weakly, the boy tried to argue with the force. Surely it couldn't be dead? It pushed him around just now, and it took down one of the kidnappers earlier. The dead were dead, so they couldn't possibly be able to do what this thing did, right?
The silence prevailed as Ara slowly looked around him, appearing almost shell-shocked by the news. It was enough to elicit a sigh from the apparently dead force, and before Ara knew it, a form started to materialize from the darkness before him. It took a moment, but the Trainer thought he could see a dark round shape in the blackness of the night. He would have thought himself crazy if not for the strikingly white eyes with enchanting green pupils.
The eyes were naturally narrowed, as if their owner was always looking at others with critical judgement. And though there was no light around, the whites of these eyes seemed to glow ever so faintly, which greatly pronounced the green. Overall, Ara was so startled by this, he failed to scream. Instead, instinct bid he throw a punch at what surprised him, and so his fist aimed for between the eyes.
Though it went right through, Ara used the momentum to lurch forward, roll, and bounce onto his feet. This time, he took of running in another direction. Though he initially wanted to return to the campsite to help the captured girls, Ara was no longer thinking logically. The fear from the night was too much. His instinct was in control, and it wanted him somewhere safe.
Thank goodness he had the endurance of a first place cross-country runner.
"Where are you going now?" The voice followed him, which further terrified Ara. The truth was, he didn't know where he was going, but the Trainer had no voice to explain. So he kept going, long into the night, and didn't stop until he found a dead-end. The source of the voice never lost him despite the distance Ara ran.
"Hm. Good lookout point."
"What are you?" Ara blurted at last as he caught his breath. Now that the boy finally stopped running, exhaustion struck home. Perhaps it was because he was so tired, but seeing those deep green eyes floating near him was no longer terrifying. Ara must have lost his sense when his instinct took over.
"I'm a Gastly," explained the floating eyes, which was then followed by the quirk of an eye as Ara let out a sharp breath. When the boy made no further noise or movement, the Pokemon continued. "Name's Alastor, kid. You calm again?" After a moment of silence, the Gastly turned from peering over the edge of the cliff and looked over the Trainer. Thankfully Ara was still seated practically beside him.
"Pokemon can talk?" At that, the Gastly chuckled. It didn't seem particularly amusing to the confused Trainer, but he supposed Pokemon must have a different sense of humor compared to humans. When the ghost gave a short reply of the negative, Ara tilted his head and furrowed his brows just a bit. He was thinking deeply now, as if he were only now letting the whole of the news sink in.
"What makes this a good lookout point?" Once again, the Pokemon quirked an eye, which Ara assumed was the same gesture of quirking a brow. Before the ghost was allowed a chance to say a word, Ara made a general sweeping gesture over the cliff-side. "What are we looking out for, now that we're here?" If Ara was still panicked from before, then he certainly didn't seem it. If anything, the boy appeared the picture of calm again.
It was almost creepy, as far as Alastor was concerned, how quickly this boy could go from mindlessly fleeing for his life to analyzing the situation. But then, Alastor wasn't one to judge. The kid seemed to have a good head on his shoulders as long as he could keep his cool. The ghost could appreciate that kind of person; maybe use him, too.
"You scared of heights?" "Not particularly." "All right. Almost directly below is the campsite you escaped. Made good time."
At that, Ara swung his legs over the edge, planted both hands down to take hold of the earth, and peered below. To his surprise, the Gastly was serious about the camp, which made the Trainer pause. How long and far did he run? By the lack of light in the sky, it couldn't have been long; a few hours? Long enough to lose his pursuers and get them to give up, at least.
By the looks of things far below, the fire had been fed quite a bit. It was so large, Ara almost tricked himself into thinking he felt the warmth of those flames from where he sat. If he looked hard enough, the boy actually thought he could see something burning on the logs. It was just his imagination, or perhaps logs larger than what Ara originally provided. Most likely just large logs.
"Where's the second one?" Ara inquired as he continued to watch the happenings far below. When the Gastly failed to answer, the boy pointed at each person, as if counting, and then stopped as his finger pointed at the long object on the ground. It was clearly a person, what with the way it futilely squirmed, but it appeared to be alone. Weren't two girls dragged up the mountain to the campsite?
"No saving her now," sighed the ghost as he settled beside the Trainer. There seemed to be quite a bitterness to his voice, though Ara didn't dare question it. Instead, the youth retreated back into the depths of his own mind. By the sounds of it, the Gastly was definitely a guy, and his voice was surprisingly husky for a Pokemon.
It- that was, Alastor- also had dark green eyes, which was unusual for a Gastly. Weren't they supposed to have black eyes? Then again, if Ara was to get technical, it shouldn't be a surprise that he encountered a Gastly that doesn't have black eyes. Perhaps it was just the Trainer's train of thought, but he couldn't honestly believe every Pokemon was to be so generic.
A thought abruptly struck Ara, as these things seemed to do quite often this night. How did the Gastly know so much about what was going on? At least, Ara thought the Pokemon was rather well-informed. Did this sort of thing happen often? So often, perhaps, that the Gastly lingered in hopes of preventing it when it could? If that was the case, maybe even if it actually wasn't, Ara felt he started to understand why save him.
After all, he was supposed to be a Pokemon Trainer.
"And the first?" Silence followed this question, and that seemed answer enough for Ara. There was no hope for either girl. Still, given the distance Ara accidentally put between himself and the kidnappers, it made sense to believe there to be no helping either victim. In the time it would take him to navigate his way back down, the kidnappers could be long gone with their hostages.
Though certainly not ideal, Ara needed to focus his thoughts on matters he could actually attend. He just needed to think of what he was currently capable of, and as he thought more about it, the boy realized there wasn't much at all. The Gastly- Alastor was right: He was in no position to help anyone. As much of a strike as it was to his pride, Ara stood no chance with a now-sleeping Dedenne, and though a Gastly made for an excellent ally, they were still out-matched by number itself.
But that was just by number. Though Ara didn't get a good luck at his pursuers, he was fairly certain they were all larger and overall bulkier than him. And what if they all had Pokemon on them? The lone boy definitely didn't stand a chance with a Tackle-mouse and a wild poisonous ghost. The odds were severely stacked against him this night.

"Does this happen every night?" "I think so." "You don't know?"
It took a while for Alastor explain his end of the story, though not without great hesitation. This was a kid he was talking to, after all. What was she- actually a he, he soon found out- supposed to do with the information? When he realized Ara couldn't do anything with it, he figured he may as well lay the details out in the open. It felt surprisingly good, sharing what he knew of the kidnappings, his learning who he was and what he is now, and what it was that brought him here in the first place.
The attentiveness in which Ara listened was also refreshing, and further encouraged the ghost to speak. He wasn't sure what it was about this kid, but Alastor felt himself relax. So relaxed, in fact, that he momentarily forgot the significance of the night. It also grew silent between the two, but the spirit didn't particularly mind that development. He had a feeling silence was a regular thing with this kid.
It was almost strange, now that the ghost thought about it. This kid, though he looked nothing alike, actually reminded him of Puck. Though Puck was a lot more energetic and quicker to make a move, Ara at least seemed thoughtful like the kid. He also appeared a lot calmer in the sense of logically thinking things out; dismiss his earlier panic.
"What will you do now, Alastor?"
This question completely caught the Gastly off guard, and for a moment, the Pokemon didn't know what to say. It was good Ara said his name in that question too, else Alastor wouldn't have heard him in the first place. What will you do now? Huh. There was a lot that needed to be done, certainly, but...
Now? Thoughtful green eyes focused on the scene far below, realized what was in store for the remaining girl, and looked to Ara. When the Gastly realized the boy was still watching the happenings, he moved to get in the way of the view, then slowly rose as he made sure he had the Trainer's full attention. In all honesty, Alastor didn't have the slightest clue what was next, and he'd say as much.
He got what he wanted when he arrived to the site. A head full of memories, and the cruelest of deaths he could possibly have asked for if he was as creative as the freaks below. The ghost also wound up with the opportunity to save an innocent little lady who was almost caught by herself, who turned out to actually be a young man who happened to look like a girl. Alastor had zero plans for when he arrived, and sure as sugar had zero plans for the future.
Even as a Pokemon, the guy was still a human at heart. Go, do his thing, and see what happened next. There wasn't much beyond that, besides his burning desire to rain justice upon the murderous kidnappers. This, of course, was something he needed to wait on. In his current state, Alastor wasn't strong enough to bring the humans down. Not all of them.
"I want to take them down, too," announced Ara, and for a long moment, the two looked to each other with a new light of regard.
"We're in no shape to do it," replied Alastor as he kept steady eye contact with the Trainer.
"So let's shape up," was the easy answer as Ara held out a hand toward the Gastly.
He knew the Pokemon could take his hand- at least, he thought the Pokemon capable of it. Thankfully it seemed Alastor really was able, for the Trainer felt something accept his gesture. The two shook on it, and like this, the decision was made. They'd work together to stop these demons-in-disguise. Though lives would be lost in the meantime, at least they'd be avenged.
Alastor and Ara would find a way, together, to solve the issue made up of these criminals. Until then, they'd grow stronger, steadily, and prepare. Their first step? A toss-up between training Daisy and Alastor, or finding a third Pokemon to join their little party. Of course, there was to be a step before this "first step": sleep for the night, then get off the mountain. After these minor details though, the real deal would begin.
For those lost lives and the lives in danger, Alastor and Ara needed to get stronger. And so began the race against time.
...
"Wait, you ran into them?" "Hm? 'Them'?"
Ara didn't speak up as the brothers looked to each other, and instead tilted his head a bit to mirror the younger boy's confusion. Was it such a big deal to Trevor that Ara ran into those kidnappers? Or was it just because he escaped alive? Before he could inquire futher, Trevor spoke up. It seemed he was prepared to warn both Ara and Jay about the troubles of these murderous kidnappers.
Unfortunately, it wasn't as informative as what Alastor provided, and the Trainer thoughtfully glanced to his side. Though there appeared to be no one there, Ara knew his partner was standing- well, floating actually- beside him. If the youth knew his ghostly teammate as well as he believed he did after years of working together, then Alastor would have quirked an invisible brow at him.
"Triviai Nyktelios."
Both Trevor and Jay looked to Ara, one in surprise and the other in confusion, when he finally spoke up. Once he realized what he said, the Trainer smiled thoughtfully at his companions. Yes, his eyes seemed to say; he knew what the murderous kidnappers called themselves. Ara was acutely aware of what the name meant, too, thanks to Alastor's insight.
"The nocturnal agents of Trivia," recited the Trainer as he absently patted his Dedenne. "With even 'nocturnal' being a reference to yet another mythological persona. They're rather fearsome, aren't they?"
"You say that like you're not scared," gaped Jay. Was it just Ara, or did the boy appear awed by Ara's apparent lack of concern? It seemed Trevor noticed this too, for he quickly reminded the youngest boy of how dangerous the kidnappers were, though that seemed to hardly faze the youth. "But I guess you're not cause you got away once."
"Once," agreed Ara. This time, his eyes darkened, and the others went quiet as they watched. "Or twice. Not quite as luckily as the first. Never as luckily as the first."
Silence punctuated his words, and for a long moment, the two left Ara to his thoughts. It was welcomed, though. The boy couldn't help but remember all the trouble he found himself involved in, and a cold fury crept its way through his heart. Each time, Ara managed to fail someone in some way, and it was never pretty. There were always screams, muffled or not, and there were always bones.
But the worst of it all was the discovery made by Ara and his team. They needed to be stronger, even stronger than they already were, if they were going to defeat the Triviai Nyktelios. One thing was for sure though: neither Ara nor Alastor was about to give up on this goal to permanently remove the kidnappers from existence. This was more than just a goal to them: This was to be realty.
"Ara?" It was Trevor, though for a long moment, it didn't look like the oldest boy to Ara. When his eyes cleared of the fog of memories, Ara managed a smile to encourage his friend to go on. "Why don't we all call it a day?" As Jay nodded in sheepish agreement, Trevor went on. It was clear to them that Ara's mood dropped because of his memories of the kidnappers, though no one dared mention this. Instead, Trevor went on to say how it had been a long day, and they all needed some rest.
"We can all catch up again Tomorrow," piped Jay, which brought genuine smiles to both Ara and Trevor's expressions. "I want to tell you about the first time Koko and I battled on our own, and as a real team!"
With that, the jovial chatter picked up again while they cleaned up. Honestly, the day had been getting late. It was nearly evening already, which meant Ara needed to find a place to stay for the night. Once everyone was done, they all bid their goodbyes, then went their mostly separate ways: Ara to find a hotel, and the brothers to head home. Now that Ara was without human company, a form materialized beside him.
"Word sure does spread," commented Alastor as he floated beside his partner. "Thoughts?"
"We'll see what their adventures were like in comparison," decided Ara as he pet the once-again sleeping Dedenne who was snuggled against his chest. "Trevor may be the caution we need, especially if Jay's around."
"Pokemon looked good, too. The Alakazam knew I was around, seemed like. Couldn't pinpoint me though." "Final decision tomorrow, then?" "Tomorrow, then."

Congratulations, you caught a:
 Level: 3 Moves: -Hypnosis -Lick
Comments I'm always on the fence about the pokemon speaking or ghost types remembering they were human before, not gonna lie. Makes things a little awkward in my mind but this was pretty cool and you know what? Seems legit enough. Have fun. Also, there is one thing I want you to deliver. Do you know what it is?
