Welcome to the Lorelii Islands. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Lorelii used to be a war torn continent with fighting going back so long that no one even remembered the reasoning for it any more. A lone Shiftry is said to have changed everything, literally splitting the continent into the series of islands there are today and bringing peace to the region. Now that itch to fight is coming back, and it's time to start your journey. The League has only recently reached this collection of islands, and so have you. Catch, train, battle and conquer. Or set up a bakery by the sea. Become a Gym's janitor. Map, chart, explore and become the very best at whatever you want to do.

Evie yawned, looking about her small hotel room. It was quaintly decorated with rustic furniture and a mirror on the wall in place of a television. It was probably better that way anyway; she wasn’t interested in wasting her evening of relaxation watching Pokemon battles or contests on tv. She wanted to rest in silence, maybe read a book, and lounge in bed. She wanted to have time to think on what had happened the last few weeks. She had definitely made it far; she had managed to travel long distances and make a good friend along the way in Vila, as well as her team.

That team fought so hard to win things for her today. She owed them so much, and more, but would never know how to express that gratitude. Especially when she wasn’t sure she felt that gratitude to begin with. She was proud, sure, but not grateful that they fought for her to make her proud.

She sighed and glanced out the window. It had actually started to snow; this time, it wasn’t the creation of a few Ice-types. The fluffy powder slowly drifted down from the sky outside, embracing the earth in white. It was so peaceful; there wasn’t any wind blowing the snow into flurries. It actually looked like a scene from a movie, where the main character was standing underneath a streetlamp, with snow gently cascading down around them, illuminated in that one circle while the rest of the world was dark. The spotlight would be on the main character, who would be staring down pensively, his breath fogging in small clouds right in front of his mouth. She was certain she had read that very scene in a book recently, but for some reason, couldn’t put a title to it.

Shaking off the thought, she laid down on her bed and stretched out. She had put on her pajamas earlier after a warm shower, and she was comfortable in the fleece pants decorated in cute Cubchoo and Vanillish print. She rested on top of the comforter, staring up at the ceiling. It was painted in a stark white, but in the dim light from her bedside lamp, she could see thousands of shadows cast about by the texture applied underneath the paint. Idly, she let her gaze slip across the ceiling, not finding anything of interest as she did.

Evie knew she loved her Pokemon; that much could never be denied. They were her life and whole world. They were practically her babies, and she cared for them as such. She’d carefully tend to their wounds if need be. She’d make them whatever they need to eat, if need be. She’d push her own desires to the side, if need be.

And she had done all three.

She remembered when she first got Lucien. The little Ralts was a tough one, despite the typical shy demeanor. He was always trying to better himself, to grow stronger, but he wasn’t having much luck by himself. She remembered the longing expression he had when he watched other people have friendly Pokemon battles in the streets, or the feeling of desire to grow that would leak across their bond in a sort of primitive telepathic communication between the two. She was always aware that he wanted to battle and become stronger. She knew he’d want to protect others. He was a true Gallade at heart, and she knew that.

She could never hold him back from that dream. She loved him far too much to keep him from training and battling. If that was his true passion, then it was her job as his trainer to enable him to follow it. It was her job to provide the setting to excel. It was her job to provide him with an exciting and stimulating life. It was for him that she’d throw her dreams and desires away without complaint, dutifully tending to her Pokemon and making sure that they were happy.

Evie had always dreamed of being a breeder. It was humble work, raising a Pokemon from a wee little baby up to a powerful Pokemon, ready to meet its trainer and set off on its journey. She had watched both of her parents toil away day in and day out, caring for litters, meticulously selecting the best matches between parents to create the perfect combination of temperament and egg moves. They’d care tirelessly for their Pokemon, raising the parents and making sure they were in top form, helping them keep warm and in proper environment for eggs to develop and hatch, and making sure food was always out.

Evie loved playing with the babies, helping them learn to accept humans and keep them from growing skittish. She would tickle them and roll little balls for them to chase about the floor, giggling all the while. She smiled as she remembered that, loving the feeling of pride when the Pokemon she helped raise were finally ready to meet their trainers. She loved seeing that lifelong bond spark and begin to flicker. She loved seeing the trainers come back months later and seeing how much that bond had grown. And most importantly, she loved the acts of caring for the Pokemon. Even the grueling dirty work, such as cleaning up waste or filling food bowls didn’t bother her. She knew from an early age that she would follow in her parents’ footsteps.

Until Lucien came along. Lucien was a force to be reckoned with in her life. She had seen that bond form between trainer and Pokemon time and time again, but was never prepared to feel that herself. When she did meet Lucien, she realized just what it meant to be partnered with a Pokemon. It was a special bond, different than that of any human companion. They were in sync in a way that two humans would never be, although a good part of that was likely his Psychic typing. Regardless, she knew what had to be done and did so without complaint. She studied to be a trainer, shocking her parents as she did so, and prepared to set off on her own journey.

That journey had taken them far in that short amount of time. Evie had to admit, she never expected them to get so far so quickly. She definitely owed it to her Pokemon. They had all grown so strong, especially Lucien, but she still found herself haunted by a single image: Lucien being tossed about like a doll by the Ekans.

The thought of that scene in their battle literally brought tears to the teen’s eyes. She closed her eyes shut and shook her head, trying to clear it, but no matter how hard she tried, it was there.

That was the reason she never desired to be a trainer. Pokemon battled, and Pokemon got hurt. While most of the time, battles controlled the amount of damage done, there were still injuries. Pokemon have still died in battle, whether it was accidental or not. For that reason, she never wanted to battle competitively. There were far too many risks involved that she never cared to take. She didn’t want to see the Pokemon that she loved and cared for so diligently injured in battle.

Sighing to herself, the teen rolled over. Despite being tired from a day frolicking with her Pokemon and getting to know the new member of her team, the teen was unable to get comfortable enough to sleep. Her mind was too restless to sleep. Her journey was progressing far quicker than she had expected, and quite frankly, it scared her.

It felt like just yesterday they were leaving on their journey. She sat out with just Lucien by her side. Evie couldn't help an infectious grin that danced across her lips, lighting up her eyes. Now, their team had grown. It wasn't just her and Luce anymore; they had Ori, Cass, and Neva too. It was crazy how in such a short period of time, so much had changed.

The grin quickly faded away, however, when she once again remembered Lucien's body tossed about by the Ekans. Evie felt a chill down her spine, but shook it off. He was okay, she told herself, it was a controlled battle, and he is just fine. In fact, their team had won the entire competition. She reminded herself of this fact, glancing to the nightstand on which she had set her ribbon from her victory. It was a reminder that they had been successful; that despite their challenges they faced, they still pulled through together. With their teamwork, with each member of their team pulling their weight, they stood victorious at the end.

That's what was important, right? Winning?

No. Winning was important, sure, but not the most important part. The most important part was the bonds that were being forged between trainer and Pokemon, between members of their team. It was important that they grew together, that they supported each other, that they loved each other. Winning was an important part, but someone who wins every battle isn't going to be happy if they don't feel connected to their team. True joy comes from watching the personal victories. It comes from watching someone you care about manage to do something they had been struggling with, finally being successful.

Evie smiled to herself again. She remembered the pride in Casimir's eyes when he defeated the Klefki. The pride in all of her Pokemon when they were told they won. That happiness in her Pokemon is what made this all worth it. And despite the fact that she gave up her own aspirations for her Pokemon, seeing them happy made her happy. Their hopes and dreams were now her hopes and dreams, and because of that, she would train them diligently. She would lead them into battle despite her own reservations.

Their hopes and dreams were her hopes and dreams. And those hopes and dreams included taking on the Pokemon League, one Gym at a time.

As Evie finally made peace with that fact, she yawned, feeling infinitely lighter. Starting tomorrow, they'd head toward Honu to challenge their first gym, she decided. Of course, this would happen after a good night's sleep.

With that thought in mind, the sleepy teen turned off the lamp next to the bed and got herself situated. She drifted off to sleep with a soft smile on her face with positive thoughts toward what the future held.
