Welcome to the Lorelii Islands. We hope you enjoy your visit.
Lorelii used to be a war torn continent with fighting going back so long that no one even remembered the reasoning for it any more. A lone Shiftry is said to have changed everything, literally splitting the continent into the series of islands there are today and bringing peace to the region. Now that itch to fight is coming back, and it's time to start your journey. The League has only recently reached this collection of islands, and so have you. Catch, train, battle and conquer. Or set up a bakery by the sea. Become a Gym's janitor. Map, chart, explore and become the very best at whatever you want to do.

The morning sky was completely clear, the rain clouds having passed or dissipated the night before, and Yorick Saucedo couldn't help but be consumed by the pleasant scenery in the post-sunrise glow. Though he'd slept soundly and had been utterly exhausted the night before, once he had woken up, he'd found it utterly impossible to get back to sleep on the hard floor of the pokemon center. Plus, his mind was completely preoccupied by the realization that he actually had a pokemon now. He was just too wired, and so he'd elected to go for a morning stroll to help sort out his thoughts.
On top of the pokemon, he'd found out yesterday that the entirety of his leadership on this mission had been killed. That was a hard pill to swallow, and he had pushed it so far back in his mind that he hadn't even thought about it for the latter half of yesterday. That was the nature of being a spy, he supposed. Risk was part of the job. Internally, though, the idea that people within his organization had been murdered for planning a mission that he was now on gave him chills. He and Amy would have to be extremely careful if they actually wanted to pull this off. Careful and lucky.
What made it worse, though, was that whoever was responsible for the assassinations was very likely a member of the Secret 77 himself. That meant that it wasn't even safe for the duo to tell any one else what they were doing. As far as the 77 was concerned, they were just a couple of average field agents, ready to do whatever new missions dropped from above. Yorick chuckled at the thought. It wasn't that it made him happy, but what else could you do in a situation like this but to laugh?
He could cry.
Yorick laughed harder. If he let himself get overwhelmed, there was no hope for either of them. Amy was going to be depending on him just as much as he'd depend on her, so they both had to stay strong and resilient to get through this operation unscathed. Sauce glanced down at his bandaged arm. Mostly unscathed.
That was the real reason he'd found himself out here this early in the morning; his arm. He shouldn't have let himself get hurt like that, and if they had been doing something more important than just training he could have cost them the mission. More than that, it was embarrassing. Amy had had to practically carry him to town. He hated the idea of being so weak, especially in front of Amy.
Yorick scouted the area. He'd already walked quite a ways out of the town, lost in his thoughts, but he was burning sunlight, and if he was going to get any sort of training with the Ditto in, he'd need to get down to business. There were bound to be wild pokemon somewhere around here if he looked well enough.
The area was certainly picturesque, especially with the sunrise peaking over the horizon, engulfing the rugged hills in cascading amber sunlight. Yorick walked along one of the many tiny game trails that weaved and twisted through the badlands. They were really the only trails to take if you didn't want to try climbing the steep and shale-like hills. Sauce kept his eyes and ears open as he quietly walked throughout the trails
A cascading series of rocks from a nearby ledge caught his attention. The man turned to see a small rodent pokemon emerging from a freshly dug hole. At the same instant, the pokemon became aware of Saucedo a few feet below him. It's large brown ears perked up and twisted towards him in fright, and the Bunnelby froze, eyes and ears fixed on the man.
This is it, Sauce told himself and reached for his one pokeball. He tossed the ball, and it bounced against the rocks and popped open to reveal his new pokemon, Ersatz the Ditto. Ersatz looked around to understand his surroundings, twisting his “neck” a full 360 degrees. The purple pokemon resembled a wrung out washcloth before it snapped back to it's normal position like rubber. The jello-like pokemon smiled as it caught sight of it's new trainer, shaking it's small arm-like nubs to wave to him.
“Transform,” Sauce called, smiling genuinely at the antics of the pokemon.
Upon the appearance of the new pokemon, the Bunnelby, narrowed it's eyes. If it was a fight they wanted, it would be a fight they got. The rabbit had never encountered whatever type of pokemon the human had sent out, but it was confident enough in it's abilities. It bared its two small rodent fangs with a hiss before dashing forward, zipping down the hill in a Quick Attack, leaving a cascading avalanche of shale and pebbles in it's wake.
Ersatz quickly shifted into an almost exact copy of it's attacker, but couldn't react fast enough to much more than flinch as the Bunnelby collided against it and hopped away. The faux rabbit was then barraged with the bouncing pebbles that had followed behind the wild Bunnelby's Quick Attack, covering itself with it's new ears.
Ersatz recovered quickly enough, turning to face the Bunnelby, who now appeared to be shocked. The Ditto was a exact duplicate except for one glaring flaw, it seemed inable to change it's color. The Imitation Bunnelby that stood a few feet in front of Yorick was completely purple. Sauce recalled his first encounter with the pokemon in the Power Plant. At the time, it had morphed into a Rotom, but it had retained it's purple color. Saucedo vaguely remembered hearing that Ditto, on occasion were prone to missing certain details while they were still fairly inexperienced. It would be something the pokemon would learn with time, he supposed.
Now was the time to retaliate, though. Yorick hesitated for a brief moment, wracking his brain to come up with moves the Bunnelby probably knew. He was sure it had Quick Attack, of course, and he couldn't afford to waste time trying to remember every little detail.
“Quick Attack!” Shouted Sauce. He'd figure out the other moves in time.
The wild Bunnelby seemed to have the same idea, and they both blurred towards each other, colliding headfirst and stumbling backwards. It's like a mirror, Sauce remarked to himself. Except one of them is totally purple.
“Use Agility and then try to Quick Attack from behind him!” Sauce was beginning to compile a list of likely moves the Digging-Type pokemon would know.
Ersatz focused for a split second, lightening itself on it's feet and increasing it's quickness. The enemy pokemon ran towards him, flailing it's muscular ears around it's head readying a Double Slap attack, but Ersatz, with Agility-boosted speed, deftly hopped sideways out of the range of the attack before blurring, even faster, back at the flank of his foe. Bunnelby was struck with enough force to send it rolling on it's side up against a small jutting patch of dirt.
“Nice one!” Sauce commended his partner with a laugh. This pokemon battling thing wasn't too tough.
As if in agreement, Ersatz hopped gleefully, spinning 360 degrees in celebration. The purple rabbit definitely seemed to be enjoying itself, but it's foe was of a noticeably different disposition. The wild pokemon puffed up it's cheeks in anger and thrust it's ears into the ground before flinging them back out towards the celebrating Ditto, sending soft mud and dirt flying through the air. The Mud Slap, as Sauce recognized it, struck Ersatz with critical accuracy. Mud and debris splashed against the pokemon's eyes and blurred it's vision just as the enemy charged with another Quick Attack.
Ersatz, surprised and distraught by the first attack, had no way of reacting to his opponent's follow-up, and stumbled backwards. The pokemon his balance once more and tried to rub the debris from his eyes with his small paws, but it didn't have much affect. Some mud had been smeared out of it's eyes, but most of it had remained.
The wild Bunnelby readied another attack, crouching down on it's haunches ready to pounce. It sprung forward and whipping it's ears wildly; another Double Slap.
Luckily, Ersatz was able to open it's eyes just in time to see the wild rabbit careening towards him, and he rolled out of the way of the attack. Yorick was relieved. After the last volley of attacks the Ditto had received, he was beginning to question how much his Ditto could have left in him and he hoped Ersatz could defeat his for before the man would have to find out; a prospect that, with Ersatz' diminished accuracy was beginning to seem daunting. The simplest solution of course was for Ersatz to avoid getting hit anymore, and though he'd rolled out of the way of the last attack, it had left the mimic lying prone on the ground, defenseless, while his opponent quickly turned to face him.
“Get up!” Sauce shouted, hoping, afterwards, that he hadn't sound angry at his partner. The pokemon just had to get back on it's feet quickly was all. What had happened to the advantage they'd had only seconds before?
Ersatz scrambled back up to his feet in time to be Tackled again from his rear by the enemy Bunnelby. The Ditto stumbled forward, catching himself with his rabbit-legs.
“Try a Double Slap!”
The purple pokemon whirred as quickly as he could catch his balance and caught his foe still standing behind him, unready for a retaliation. Ersatz struck the Bunnelby with his muscular ears three times before the wild pokemon was able to block and hop back, out of range.
The foe Bunnelby stared angrily at Ersatz for an instant, knowing that due to the pokemon's diminished accuracy and eyesight, it would have the advantage enough to dodge whatever move Ersatz might throw at it.
Sauce watched intensely as the two Bunnelby stared each other down. He and Ersatz would have to come up with something clever to make up for the mud in the Ditto's eye. A Quick Attack? Maybe they would be fast enough to catch their opponent off guard, but could Ersatz even efficiently move fast enough when he had such a hard time seeing? If they didn't have the advantage at this moment, then the key would be to get the advantage.
“Ersatz, grab the high ground! Get to the top of that hill.” Sauce gestured towards the nearest hilltop. It was steep, but not too tall, and Sauce was sure Ersatz as a Bunnelby would have no problem getting up it. From the high ground, at least Ersatz's defensive capabilities will be increased, Sauce theorized, recalling his prior analyst training.
The purple Bunnelby dashed upwards towards the hilltop, his enemy chasing behind. The two rabbit's race up the hilltop, but with Ersatz' Agility boost, the mimic reached the top much earlier than his rival. The wild Bunnelby, seeing Ersatz' victory, remained halfway up the hill, unwilling to press further and put himself at risk.
Sauce, too, had to hike partway up the slope to maintain a good view of the battle. The man was considerably less deft than either of the pokemon, and more than once had to catch himself with his hands as his footing gave way. His palms were scraped and raw by the time he got a decent position on the hill. The two pokemon were still staring each other down, The wild Bunnelby reluctant to mount an assault up the hill, and Ersatz reluctant to give up his position without direction from Sauce.
The enemy pokemon suddenly perked up his ears and became even more tense. Sauce furrowed his brow. Was it preparing for some other attack? No, the rabbit quickly scrambled down to the base of the hill, turning his back entirely on his enemy. Something was wrong. Sauce quickly scanned around the area, but saw nothing. Ersatz sat on his haunches, ears cocked in confusion.
Yorick couldn't see anything, but it was best to play it safe. The other Bunnelby had now burrowed into the ground and was in hiding, so there must be something wrong. “Hey, Ersatz, why don't you come over here by m--” The man looked over to his pokemon just in time to feel a gust of wind rush against his face and a brown blur fly past him and up into the air.
Saucedo's eyes widened in terror and as he felt his blood freeze over. He could see in the sky a large Pidgeot clutching a purple shape in it's talons, flying somewhere far away. Ersatz was gone.
Without thinking, Sauce sprinted after it, slipping and scrambling over the uneven and loose ground. He couldn't let that Pidgeot get away. His first pokemon and he'd managed to lose it within a day? Arceus, this is why he should never have been allowed to have a pokemon. The bird was fading fast, but Yorick kept chasing after it, his breath burning against the back of his throat.
With seemingly divine intervention, he watched as the now-dot-sized Pidgeot descended towards the ground, circling downwards to lower it's speed. Please let that be where it stops. The bird landed on a jutting tor located a few miles in the distance.
Sauce maintained his speed as best he could as he tried to cover the distance between his position and Ersatz, but he could feel his legs get begin to get heavy. He couldn't afford to waste time though, who knew how long Ersatz would be safe? Sauce kept pushing until he made it to the rock formation.
The rocks were piled a little taller than a house and almost as wide, and Saucedo could see the edges of the nest where the Pidgeot must have taken Ersatz. Sauce quickly looked over the structure for the best route to climb, eager to get to Ersatz before he was turned in to bird food. He made his decision and began climbing.
The man strained as he made his way up the rock face. The stones had been weathered down and fairly smooth, making it difficult to find both hand and footholds. Sauce had to try and wedge his hands along a tall crack to pull himself upward until he could reach some smaller boulders that were resting above. The man climbed awkwardly, at best, and his arms and shoulders burned as he made his way up. The 77 had never trained him for anything like this. What he wouldn't give for some kind of climbing gear right now. Didn't Amy have a grappling hook? He was sure the girl would have made it up the tor in half the time it was taking him.
Sauce reached the top and through himself over, rolling with his body weight until he was completely on the surface. He lay flat on the cool stone, catching his breath as he stared into the sky, when he was startled by a load screech. Sauce bolted to his feet to face the Pidgeot who was staring, quite intensely, in his direction, crest and plumage erect.
Saucedo tried to star down the bird. He raised his arms over his head in an effort to appear larger, but the bird, who was only about a foot shorter than he, didn't look the least bit intimidated. He stepped closer and began to wave his hands wildly, shouting undiscernibly, and tried to catch a glimpse of the nest as he approached. Try as he might, Sauce couldn't see anything past the angry pokemon, who had spread its wings in an attempt similar to Saucedo's to make itself look larger and more intimidating.
If Sauce hadn't been so engrossed with the 5 foot tall bird-of-prey he was facing off with, he may have stopped to reflect at how strange a site this would have been to an observer, but he was focused on trying to scare the bird away without actually angering it enough to attack him. The man did not want to be standing on a rock formation 12 feet in the sky whilst an enraged Pidgeot decided to attack him, but, as he and the pokemon squared off against one another, he could tell that the situation was drifting more and more that direction. The bird was getting angrier and Sauce had no way of getting past it and getting to Ersatz in the nest without making a quick move.
“Ersatz, are you there?” He called, amidst his posturing.
The only sound was the pounding wind blowing past his ears and the crying of several baby Pidgey who were presumably standing in the nest. If Ersatz was still there, he was staying quiet.
Deciding that his tactic wasn't working, and that the situation was showing no signs of improvement, Sauce decided he'd need a drastic change of pace. There was probably a peaceful way to get through this situation, he assumed, but at the moment his brain was only able to see one course of action; charge. The man took a second to prepare himself before running at the bird and yelling at the top of his lungs, hands forward ready to grapple the pokemon out of the way.
The Pidgeot, though startled, reacted quickly, flapping itself into the air and presenting it's talons just as Sauce came in to contact with it. Saucedo grabbed onto the bird as it flailed its claws at his and tried to shove it to the side, causing it to flap more rapidly to maintain balance. The Pidgeot flew away, giving a screech of anger as it ascended higher into the sky. Sauce turned away from his foe and went to the nest.
He immediately gave a sigh of relief. In the nest was five young, fledgling, Pidgey; four of them normal, and one completely purple. The Ditto had transformed into another baby Pidgey instead of the Bunnelby. Sauce was grateful because he was sure that the bird-of-prey had been ready to take the rabbit pokemon back to its hatchlings for lunch. Luckily Ditto had transformed and the Pidgeot must have changed it's mind. The baby birds appeared too young to understand what was going on, but they instinctively began to call out louder as the unknown figure approached their nest.
Sauced hushed them quietly, kneeling down to the nest as he tried to calm them. He outstretched his hand to Ersatz and smiled.
“What have you been up t--” He was cut off as the Pidgeot came back at him, dive-bombing him and striking him with enough force to knock him down onto his side, head now hanging off the rock ledge. The Pidgeot whirled back around and dove at him again, talons outstretched and ready to slash at him.
Saucedo, reacting on instinct rolled sideways toward the center of the rock, narrowly avoiding the bird's swiping claws. As far as the Pidgeot knew, Sauce was a danger to her nest. The bird pokemon repositioned itself for another strike, and Sauce, who was now trying to get back to his feet as quickly as possible, was forced to dive out of the way of another attack. The man, now lying prone, hastily grabbed for his pokeball, and aimed it towards the nest, rapidly clicking the button to return Ersatz to his ball so they could get away.
The red beam of light made contact with the purple Pidgey and Ersatz was returned to his ball. Sauce got to his knees and put the pokeball back behind his belt just in time to get struck by a wing attack. The man toppled backwards, landing hard on his shoulder. Sauce swore out loud as kicked back at the bird. All he needed was a little space so he and Ersatz could get out of there, but the Pidgeot seemed determined to make him pay for getting so close to her hatchlings.
With any chance of a casual departure long gone, Sauce rolled to the edge of the tor. Stealing a glance over the edge and holding his breath in anticipation, he kicked his legs over, dropping himself down to the ground, and trying to use his arms and feet to catch what he could to slow and control his fall. Sauce skid down the rock face as rapidly as he could manage, the rock rubbing his hands like sandpaper. He touched down on the ground, crouching to absorb the impact, before getting back up and sprinting away.
As he ran, Sauce was constantly looking upwards over his shoulder at the Pidgeot. The pokemon swooped down behind Sauce several times, keeping the man more than motivated to run.
By the time the Pidgeot had given up the chase and returned to her nest, Sauce had been chased far out of view of the original nest. Sauce took a break, doubled over, and heaving air. This day was ridiculous, he had just planned on a little walk, not running a marathon. As he caught his breath, he looked at his hands. The palms were only lightly bloodied, he remarked to himself optimistically. At least it wasn't as bad as yesterday.
He dropped down to his buttocks, kicking his legs out in front of him and resting his lower back against the rocky slope. Amy had said it the other day and she had been completely right. Why was he so damned unlucky all the time? Saucedo again laughed at his own luck. There wasn't any alternative, he supposed. He was just cursed to lead a life full of falling down, being randomly attacked, and getting locked in buildings. Some people just didn't have any luck.
Alas, poor Yorick..
It was too bad they'd come into contact with that Pidgeot when they did. Sauce had wanted to get to know Ersatz a little better, and squeeze a bit more training into the day, but as exhausted as he was now, all he wanted to do anymore was get back to town, take a shower, and collapse on a nice soft bed somewhere. He wondered if Amy had kept busy for the day, or if she'd just stayed in the Pokemon Center beside the Electrike.
Sauce had only known the girl for a day, but he'd gotten along with her pretty well so far. Maybe not so much with her pokemon, but she had struck him as very sweet, with her concern for the Baby Electrike and everything. Yorick was actually looking forward to getting to know her better during their mission. As long as he didn't fall in a hole and get himself killed, anyway.
He released Ersatz once more, to see how the ditto was doing after nearly being made lunch for the Pidgeot and her offspring. It was pretty clever thinking, transforming into one of the chicks, he thought, or was that just a reflex for the mimic pokemon? The blob smiled happily at him and Sauce gave him some affectionate pats on his “head”-- where his face was, anyway. He seemed completely unharmed, Sauce noted, as he looked over the smiling purple dollop of goo, or maybe Ditto's just didn't show injuries the same was a regular pokemon would? He acted fine though, and so Sauce concluded he couldn't have been in any pain or anything. For someone claiming to be a pokemon expert, he sure had a lot to learn, he sighed. He'd pick it up as he went, he supposed.
Saucedo rose back to his feet after he had felt sufficiently rested, Ersatz now draped around his left shoulder. He looked around, spotted the mountain peaks near the Adobo forest, and began his long walk back to Barborytown, debating whether he wanted to tell Amy the embarrassing events of the day or not. Perhaps he'd leave the part about getting his ass kicked by a Pidgeot out of his story, he thought, looking back with a chuckle.
