Gay kiss is missed on soap

By DAVID HINCKLEY
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

Friday, February 22nd 2008, 4:00 AM

On the Valentine's Day episode of the CBS soap "As the World Turns," all the couples kissed - except Luke and Noah.

That did it for a group of the show's fans. They have launched a campaign protesting what they call discrimination against the gay pair, who got together last September and have not gone much beyond hugging since then.

The show's producers, however, defend the pace at which the relationship has developed, and a leading gay media monitor group praises the pioneering relationship.

While there remain inequities in TV's treatment of gays and straights, says entertainment media director Damon Romine of the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Discrimination, he notes that "ATWT" has been nominated for a GLAAD Media Award because of "the thoughtful writing of both characters' individual journeys."

He also notes that "Luke and Noah's relationship is the first gay male love story portrayed on daytime in 60 years."

Critics, who started their media blitz Wednesday through a Web site for Van Hansis - the actor who plays Luke, say the lack of physical contact between the couple reflects the broader media discomfort with gay romance.

Jeannie Tharrington, a spokeswoman for "As the World Turns," says, "Everybody at [the show] is committed to this groundbreaking story line."

Since it started, she says, "We've heard from a lot of people - some of whom like it, some of whom don't. We want to tell the story the best way we can and also want to be respectful of all the people who watch the show."

I just hope that this "media blitz" doesn't end up backfiring... Since the website is unsanctioned, I would hope that Van wouldn't get any backlash from this. And if there is too much controversy, couldn't the show just find it easier to drop the storyline altogether?

That is the one thing that I worry about most, is the backlash of all of this. And I really worry about this article because of Van's name being brought up I don't like that at all. I don't want them thinking this is Van's idea or that he has anything to do with it.

Hmmm...I have to say nice to read another article but I liked the LA Times one better. If this campaign gets any bigger, P&G is going to have to either more directly address the issue like CBS did or something. I'm sure P&G is not liking all this negative media attention.

TPTB know I'm sure that it's an unofficial website, and that neither Van nor his agent have any control over what's there and if they deem it a problem they will work together for the best solution, surely since they have the same goals.

That's a distinct possibility. Because if Luke and Noah go away so does the problem. I don't know if that what folks want to accomplish, but that could happen. That said, Luke and Noah are popular and who knows what dumping the couple/story could do? Not sure if TPTB would do that, especially in a renewal year. To be honest, I'm torn. I understand why people are upset.... on the other can you really expect the first (and only) gay love story to be perfect, to be everything a gay storyline can be? Not sure if that's asking too much. Though.... it is just a kiss. However, I suspect that for a lot of folks that won't be enough even if they finally got that. In the end, I don't want to lose the couple over this issue.

And when I read that comment about Van and the website, I wondered if Van himself would get any backlash..... he's probably gotten enough flak already. I wouldn't want his bosses to think he's sanctioning any of this.

I think what's really unfortunate is that this situation has consumed everything. No one seems to care about the story has been told, the progress that has been made, that we've come so far in a short amount of time. That the acting is good, that the new story might be interesting. This issue overshadows everything else about the couple and to be frank, TPTB are at fault, but so is the other side, who are as fixated on seeing a kiss as the other side seems to be about not showing one. I just think it's sad that all the good that has been done has gotten lost amid all of this 'drama'.

I agree. I just wonder how big this campaign is going to get? I see it being both good and bad. At some point this is going all to have to reach a climax.

Edit: Yeah this is all overshadowing the storyline, but who's fault is that? I blame P&G and not the fans. honestly, most fans just want to see a kiss every now and then and not all the time. I don't need to see kisses all the time either, but even for me it is getting to of being of being ridiculous. They just need to let these guys kiss every now and then. I think most viewers who left the show already did and I understand P&G needs to cater to the more older and conservative viewers a bit, but they are doing too much. It's a dying demographic anyways that's killing soaps. They to attract younger viewers and I think if they went almost all out on Luke and Noah, the show would be pleasantly rewarded. P&G really can't kill the story anyways, they already not looking good in the eyes of the press, it would just make things worse. P&G just needs to grow a pair or sell the dam show to someone who does.

I've been worried about this since they day they started this campaign and if the storyline gets dropped then that isn't going to suprise me a bit. Especially with the major blitz that happend last week.

I wouldn't be surprised if the story got dropped too.

I know.... I like it as well and I know others that do too. I just wish more enjoyed it.... or actually were willing to give it a chance. Sadly, most 'fans' hated the story before it aired.

Yeah I know thats what really ticks me off and honestly I don't mind people want to support Nuke becuase I am all for that but if this media blitz effs up their storyline then I am going to be ticked off at those particular fans that did all of it.

I LOVE Ameera! I liked her before she even aired when I saw that interview that Van did with Tala. It was a good interview and I knew I was going to enjoy her character.
