Gay-teens story rockets soap-opera rating
By Greg Hernandez, Staff Writer

Who'd have thought that a story line between two gay teenagers would ignite the ratings of the CBS soap "As the World Turns" and lead to a guest spot (airing today) by Cyndi Lauper?

The relationship between Luke Snyder (Van Hansis) and Noah Mayer (Jake Silbermann) has brought new fans to the 52-year-old show and stirred much debate over how the groundbreaking story line is being played out.

I chatted about it recently with Van and Jake, as well as Jon Hensley, who plays Luke's dad, Holden Snyder.

Luke and Noah have had a bumpy road to travel. Their calamities have included Luke's being shot and temporarily paralyzed by Noah's bigoted father and Noah's entering into an ill-advised green card marriage with an Iranian woman, then being harassed by immigration folks eager to expose the union as a sham. And last month, Noah's "wife" was kidnapped by his crazy dad after he broke out of jail.

"Any script we get, you try and find what resonates with you," said Jake. "It is a soap, so there are outlandish things that happen, but that's the fun of it."

Van, who has twice been nominated for a Daytime Emmy for his performance as Luke, added: "Yeah, you just have to give yourself over to the genre. Even when outlandish things happen, you have to find the truth."

The biggest controversy of the story line involved the many months in which Luke and Noah went without sharing a kiss. Early in the relationship, they smooched several times. But then they were reduced to hugs and googly eyes - even on the Valentine's Day episode, when virtually every other couple on the show was involved in some kind of lip-lock. CBS executives acknowledged that fans made their displeasure known.
There was never an explanation of the kissing drought. Nor was there one when the couple began to share kisses again.

"We really were not involved in that, really at all, and I think that's the way it needed to be," Van said about the no-kissing uproar. "I think the fan campaign went the way it should have gone, and they focused on the people they needed to focus on."

Luke and Noah are currently on the outs, but Lauper told TV Guide that she plans to play relationship counselor on today's episode:

"Who wouldn't want to get involved with that?" Cyndi said. "I tell those boys: `You never give up on love!' And it's true. There will always be obstacles, but in the end, it's all about love, pal."

She added: "What CBS has done here is groundbreaking and very courageous. Also smart, because a lot of gay people watch soaps. I'm honored to be a little part of it."

Hensley has played Holden Snyder on and off for 20 years and admitted to me that he was initially skeptical about the decision to have his TV son be gay.

"It's turned out to be, I think, one of the better story lines in the last 10 years," he said. "Fans have really loved it. ... It's been great, and I hope they continue it."

Holden cares about his son's happiness first and foremost, and that seems to guide him in any advice he gives.

"They really wanted my character to be very supportive of him," Jon said. "What's really wonderful about it is I guess there aren't that many parents like that when their sons come out to them initially and tell them that they are gay. But Holden dealt with it, and he loves his son."
