The Cheshire Cat
|
`But I don't want to go among mad people,' Alice remarked. `Oh, you can't help that,' said the Cat, `we're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad.' `How do you know I'm mad?' said Alice. `You must be,' said the Cat, `or you wouldn't have come here.'
In the back of every mind, there exists some form of madness. In some, it is more pronounced than others, holding more precedence over a person's actions than their own mind, or balancing peacefully, or perhaps confined tightly into the back corner of one's head. Most keep it well-hidden, at any rate, but the potential is always there. The potential to open doors you never knew were there, to do the impossible, or to explore a world that sane people could never begin to imagine. A world strangely akin to the legendary Wonderland.
A long time has passed since Alice's visit, but the world of Wonderland continues to thrive, each adventure shaped by the twisted minds of the adventurers, visitor or resident. Many things have changed, but this is unmistakably Wonderland. It is indeed a wonderful land, but also a delicate one, existing both independent of and in conjunction with reality.
But as in reality, not everything is cheerful. There is a darker side of Wonderland that Alice, in her innocence, never reached--a whole realm of nightmarish creatures that make the whimsical Wonderlanders shiver in their stockings. The two mirrored worlds are separated by the Chessboard Desert, a vast expanse of rough terrain to serve as sort of a barrier between the two vastly contrasting areas of Wonderland--the bubbliness of one would be a blight to the other, while contrariwise the morbidness of the other would frighten the one. It is rumored that whoever can survive a trip through the Chessboard is the next predestined King or Queen of their area of Wonderland, but for as far back as anyone can remember, the Chessboard has been closed off, inaccessible to anyone from either side. Since both Wonderland and its Reflection are armed with a monarch, no one has felt a great need to investigate further into the matter, and for the most part the visitors and residents of both sides simply accept their separation.
But the clock is ticking, and Wonderland, being built on foundations of insanity, never stays the same for long.
