Keeper Fantasy Football

In 2013, the National Football League folded after the head injury lawsuit crippled the NFL brand. Violence-thirsty, football-loving, red blooded Americans, however, can't go all fall and winter without football, so a new league has popped up in its' place.

Would anyone be interested in a keeper fantasy football league? Realistic city/team names. Standard scoring. Some sort of keeper format that makes it sort of sim-like but still essentially fantasy football. I was thinking something like 5 keepers, 2 you have to determine before the season (so if they get hurt or suck or whatever, you're screwed) and two before the next season.

I do not have to run it, but I wanted to throw the idea out there. Complete the sim tri-fecta with the sim and X11. (Pure fantasy, video game with real players, pure game)

Some additional ideas that have been discussed:

-- Auction draft
-- Team Defenses
-- Keepers work via contracts: 1 4-year contract, 2 3-year contracts and 3 2-year contracts.
-- via Chris: "if you add 10% of the auction cap to any one player's contract you should be able to "franchise" them for a single season"

Announcing the Yuengling League, and its championship game, the Kopco Bowl.

The league is on Yahoo!, the league ID is 185932.

  • Auction Draft, date set for Aug 19 at 8pm. This can change.
  • Team defenses, not IDP will be used. Default scoring will be used. Default lineups will be used unless there is other debate- although there will be a large bench.
  • Keepers will work via contracts. After the draft you will hand out 1 4-year contract, 1 3-year contract and 3 2-year contracts.
  • Please keep team names in the [Location][Nickname] format.

If you want Yahoo's shitty rankings just click the projections on the league page. I know they are shitty because they ranked my shitty draft 3rd.

Keeper League Ideas

Tanking disincentives
Looked at a lot of leagues and tried to find the most creative ways to punish people, but most of them seem to involve some sort of trophy or amazingly awkward real life things, and we don't even meet up once a year or anything.

So, unless someone wants to talk me into that, my recommendation is simply as follows:

-After the season, the top-8 teams submit their keeper contracts BEFORE the bottom-8 teams
-- The 9th-14th place teams are thrown into a lottery (possibly weighted) for a draft where they may take one player from a top-8 team that wasn't tendered a keeper contract and offer him one. They may also elect to pass.
--- The 15th place team gets nothing.
---- The 16th place team only drafts and conducts keepers with a $190 budget next season.

Contracts
Given how big the league is, my recommendation is that we scale down the proposed contract system a bit. Otherwise, teams will be keeping way too many players and the drafts will be so shallow that they won't even be interesting.

Here's what I'd do:
--You are allowed three contracts to hand out in each off-season: one three-year deal, one two-year deal, and one one-year deal.
---The value of those deals are as follows -- Y1: Original salary + $7 -- Y2: Original salary + $14 -- Y3: Original salary +$21. For example, if I kept David Wilson on a three-year deal, and his original auction price was $31, his year one price would be $38, year two price would be $45, and his year three price would be $52.
---In addition to the basic contracts, you may also "franchise" one player for next season at a cost of $25 + his original draft price. If I franchised a $6 E.J. Manuel, for example, he'd cost $31 next season.

Once the contract is over:
-- If a player's contract runs out, he is a free agent. This means you can't hand someone a string of one-year deals to "game" the system. You can't franchise players coming off contracts.

Maintaining a keeper roster:
-- You may actively keep four "contract" players -- franchise or regular -- on your roster at any given time. Never more than that. That means you can only trade for contract players if you have an open slot or you're sending out another contract player.
-- In each successive offseason, you are only allowed to hand out new contracts if you have the slot to give them. For example, if you handed out your full contract allotment one year and made no moves the next, you would have a player with one year remaining on his contract and a player with two years remaining on his contract. You'd only be able to hand out a three-year deal and a franchise tag deal. If you have somehow acquired four players that are already under contract for next year, you won't get to offer any other player a contract. If you have three players under contract, you'll only have the franchise tag.
-- HOWEVER, each offseason, you may amnesty one contract from your roster for a cost of $5 in next year's auction. That player is passed through amnesty waivers based on the reverse order of the standings, and if he goes unclaimed, he becomes a free agent. You may amnesty a player and use his slot to hand out a contract in the same offseason.

like the rules, but how would amnesty claims work? only teams with open contract slots can claim, or can you claim and keep a new contract and dump someone else on the amnesty waivers?

I want rules that are simple. I didn't read Chris's post but if someone can come in this thread and tell me they are simple they can work for me. I just want it to be easy to memorize the rules and be able to look at a roster and know which player is a contract/keeper.

yeah, only teams with open slots could claim.

seems like for the most part people are happy with the contract rules and not-so-thrilled about the tanking disincentives -- particularly punishing last place. open to other thoughts.

NOTES:

We have set up the league for next season. Please re-join if you will be playing, or let me know if you will not be playing so we can assign the rosters to new people.

I'd be in favour of taking the keeper contract draft idea for the 9th-14th place teams, with nothing for the 15th and 16th teams. I do not believe in punishing the 16th place team by making them use a $190 budget, especially since there is a chance they will not return.

The top 8 were:

El Paso, Manitoba, Tacoma, Montreal, Canton, Pocatello, Beloit and Riley

9-14 were:

Oklahoma, LA, Hyannis, Lubbock, Speonk, SF

15-16 were:

Galveston and Norristown

I would move to enact Rivers' contract rules. I would however also add that it's possible to trade a "contract" spot that is unused to another team as an asset.

Any thoughts?
