ELENA NGUYEN

FIGHTER INFO Name: Elena Nguyen Nickname: N/A Birthdate: 24 May 1992 Birthplace: Honolulu, Hawaii Residing In: Hilo, Hawaii Nationality: American Height: 5'7" Weight: 115 lbs Gender: Female Bio: Born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii, as her parents' middle child of 5, and the only girl in her generation, Elena grew up knowing both of two things: number one, she needed to (somehow) stand out against her brothers, all of whom seemed particularly more skilled in most areas than her, and number two, she wasn't going to fall victim to "middle child syndrome; she wasn't going to be forgotten, she wasn't going to live in anyone's shadow.
A martial artist from a young age, Elena tried a little bit of everything you tend to think of as "kids" martial arts--karate, tae kwon do, etc. She ended up sticking with tae kwon do and, when she was old enough to compete, competing in every tournament she could; her oldest brother would describe her as becoming increasingly obsessed with being seen--she wouldn't enter the tournaments JUST to win, she had to be the flashiest fighter there. She'd enter kata competitions, frequently losing because she broke the traditional kata in favor of adding a twist to it. Despite a talent only developed through constant training, Elena has relatively minimal success to her name in competitive tae kwon do--a handful of tournament wins, albeit including one Maui Invitational win.
There's a limited market on competitive tae kwon do in Hawaii, though, and Elena had minimal interest in travelling for the sake of her hobby. So, at 18 years old and coinciding with the rise in popularity of mixed martial arts, the young woman relocated to Hilo, and joined a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gym--by her own admission, because of the name over the door: "The Prodigy" BJ Penn. While she originally moved to Hilo for the sake of her education, originally admitted to UH-Hilo as a business major, her education quickly became secondary to her training, and she combined her already heavily practiced talent for stand up fighting with a renewed passion for BJJ. She rose through the ranks at a relatively rapid pace at first, a blue belt in a matter of 8 months, and reaching purple belt within 2 years, her progression plateued as--again--her desire to be recognized took precedence over her desire to focus on the fundamentals.
She eventually became interested in taking MMA fights--however, finding strawweight competitors either willing to travel to Hawaii for the sake of a small show was difficult. She only took a handful of amateur fights, compiling a record of 2-1-1, including a fight that most observers said she should have won in the first round, but she allowed her opponent too much time to recover, and the fight ended in a 28-28 draw. During her amateur career, both her wins came by way of decision, though neither would be described as "lackluster;" both wins were awarded fight of the night, something that Elena admitted to prioritizing.
Despite the less than stellar record, she remained interested in taking fights--but the amateur well was basically running dry. She's now turned her sights on both Caged Glory FC, and the Macto Legion, hoping to pursue a professional career.
MMA INFO Martial Arts Style: 2nd Degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do, Brown Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, 4 years experience in Muay Thai (announced as a Mixed Martial Artist) Fighting Out Of: Hilo, Hawaii Team: RVCA/Team Penn MMA Trainer: BJ Penn Trunks Color: Black and purple Venum sports bra and tight shorts. She enters wearing the Hawaiian flag as a cape. Strengths: 01) Well-Rounded: Once she decided MMA was something she wanted to do, she made sure that she focused on all aspects of the game. While she's probably most known for being a standup fighter (as this is where she can be flashiest), she doesn't so much have a primary style anymore. 02) Precise Striker: If she really wanted to, Elena could probably hit you in the chin with her big toe only. She's incredibly accurate with her striking. 03) Comfortable on Bottom: A guard player at heart, Elena’s used to working off her back. She isn’t afraid to pull guard if the fight’s not going her way and she needs to get it to the ground. Weaknesses: 01) Lacks Killer Instinct: Elena doesn't really have that next level that a lot of fighters have when they get an advantage. She fights because she thinks it's fun, she isn't so much of a headhunter. 02) Takedowns: Elena’s not exactly a world class wrestler; she's comfortable fighting on the ground, but if a fight goes to the ground, it's not often Elena doing it. 03) Showoff: Elena can be too flashy for her own good. She tends to use slightly unorthodox strategies in her fights. (see below) Fighter Tendencies: While she's comfortable just about anywhere a fight goes, she has some...peculiarities in her game. - Standup - Establish the range with jabs and leg kicks, then her style gets much more flashy--jumping kicks, hook kicks, spinning back fists, spinning elbows, front kicks to the face, etc. - Clinch - Basically boils down to 4 words: knees to the body. If she starts to lose the clinch game, she may try to pull guard and get to the ground. - Ground - Prefers being on bottom and going for submissions, rather than ground and pound from the top. To play into the flashiness thing, she tends to favor rubber guard sweeps and flashy submissions (gogoplatas, twisters, etc.) over the easier stuff. - Elena fights for fun--she doesn't take it as seriously as her skills probably implies she should. She's not actively in pursuit of finishing her fights, and almost seems to prefer showing off her techniques over anything else. Fight/Fighter of the Night means more to Elena than a win or a loss, or even a title.
