General Rules I'd very much like to keep this board as least-restrictive as possible. My number one rule is to be respectful of other users. Debates and discussions are encouraged, but please remember that there’s another person out there, behind their computer screen, that you’re interacting with! Below are a few guidelines to follow when submitting your writing and when critiquing other people’s writing. How to Submit Your Work 1. Choose the appropriate section of the “Writing Center” where your work belongs 2. Create a new topic in the appropriate forum. The title should be the title of your work 3. For novel or fanfiction chapters, include the chapter number in your title (ie. “The Great War, Chapter 1”), and for Plays, include the Act or Scene (if you are not posting a complete play in one thread) 4. You may want to include some comments in your post, such as if it's a rough draft or if you're looking for specific critiques (such as on dialogue or pacing) Submission Rules 1. Please limit vulgarity. If it must be used, curses and other vulgar words must be blocked out with symbols (such as ****) 2. Most subjects, themes, and genres are welcome, but please do not post erotica or sexual scenes. Let's keep this board mild & PG-13.. If you have questions, just ask! 3. Violence in your stories is acceptable, but please tone down gratuitous and graphic gore 4. Please remember that by submitting your work, you are allowing other club members to critique your work. Not all critiques of your work may be positive, and people might misinterpret your work or suggest you change things. You don’t have to agree with any or all critiques, and remember that they are critiques of your writing, not you as a person. You may want to include specific questions at the end of your submission (such as, “Do the characters speak naturally?”) to help guide critiques. How to Critique Submissions To post a critique of someone’s submission, simply reply to their post. Your critique will be posted beneath their submission Authors: please feel free to reply to critiques of your work! You can defend your choices, or acknowledge that a person’s suggestions will help improve your work. Critiquing Rules 1. You are critiquing a person’s writing, not the person. Instead of writing “You shouldn’t use so many clichés” try writing “Some of the sentences sound cliché. The wording could be stronger if phrased like…” 2. The goal of every critique should be to offer advice to help improve a person’s writing. You are not trying to hurt or offend the author, or attack their work. When pointing out weak points in a piece, do so respectfully 3. Please offer constructive criticism, not simply “That was great!” or “That was terrible.” Criticism can be positive or negative (ideally a mix of both!), but it ought to be as descriptive as possible when pointing out flaws and offering alternatives 4. Just because a certain genre, style, or POV doesn’t appeal to you, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t work in the piece of writing. You may hate science fiction and first-person narratives, but that doesn’t mean that the piece you are reading isn’t well executed. 5. Don’t be afraid to offer honest advice. If something isn’t working in a piece, please point it out and offer helpful solutions. Just remember: be respectful. |
