There is a planet where intelligent lifeforms that call themselves human live. The humans here took the act of giving birth and raising children far too much for granted... UNIVERSAL CENTURY 0085 The treaty that ended the One Year War was a necessary political act, but it was one that wounded the hearts of many men who have never stopped fighting their war for independence. The Zeon homeland and the lunar city of Granada were untouched by the fighting, and the Principality's military still outnumbered the Federation, but with the deaths of the Zabi family and the shock of the losses at the space fortresses Solomon and A Baoa Qu, the Zeon government capitulated and agreed to terms of surrender. The Federation's victory was not earned the moment Side 3's Prime Minister Darcia Bakharov signed the peace treaty in January of 0080. Bitter fighting continued in various regions on Earth and in areas of space for the next two years, culminating in an assault on the Zeon staging asteroid Pezun in 0082 and a reckless probing attack on the distant Axis in January 0083. Other Zeon remnants planned their resistance in a more insidious manner. In October 0083, the Delaz Fleet successfully carried out Operation Stardust, a repeat of the atrocity that has come to be known as a colony drop visited on the people of Earth by Operation British during the war. In the wake of these events and other continued pockets of armed resistance, and to detect and snuff out the fomenting of anti-Federation activities, the elite counter-insurgency unit called the Titans was formed. Part of the terms that ended the One Year War provided that Zeon would continue to exist as a semi-autonomous independent Republic. This development galled many among those who continued to fight against the Federation, as the Republic of Zeon was widely considered to be a Federal puppet. They regarded the "independence" granted by an overbearing Federation to be a deliberate insult to the cause they had bled and died for. The Republic of Zeon is subjected to strict rules regulating their military, political relations, and scientific research. The development of new weapons is severely restricted, and in practice the Republican military is kept in a position such that they have no hope of competing on military grounds with the Earth Federation. This mirrors Zeon's prewar relationship with the Federation, and this weakness is by design. It is the intention of those who inhabit the corridors of power within the Federal government that the Republic of Zeon is to be dissolved by UC 0100 and reabsorbed into direct rule. The name "Zeon" and the failed war for independence are to be forgotten and washed away by the passage of time. Another of the stipulations Zeon agreed to is that the Federation is allowed to, as a matter of course, routinely enter Side 3 to carry out inspections - scheduled and non - and to conduct searches and interviews to root out remnant forces and anti-government elements. The Titans have begun to take this one step further, posting modest investagative units in Side 3 on a semi-permanent basis to operate out of Federal colonial substations. One reason for this increasing intrusion is a circulating rumor that another Zeon remnant force is hiding under the Federation's noses within the Zeon homeland. Another reason is unknown to most, including the majority of men and women who make up the Titans. On July 31, 0085, tense but peaceful anti-Federation political demonstrations in Side 1's Colony 30 threatened to reach a boiling point due to the Titans' brutal crackdown on protestors, and an episode that would eventually come to be known as the "30 Bunch Incident" took place. The Titans withdrew their forces from the colony and deployed deadly G3 gas - the same agent Zeon had used during the opening stages of the One Year War - murdering the entire population of the colony. The Titans and those in the Federation government who knew of the incident initiated a wide-ranging and barbarous coverup that included shooting down civilian vessels that had escaped Colony 30 just prior to the gassing, but with 10 million people dead, the truth was not something that could be contained and people soon began to ask inconvenient questions. This incident led to the political movement known as the Anti-Earth Union Group to alter their moderate reformist stance and become increasingly militant, something that would lead to the outbreak of war in less than two years' time. For now, under these tense circumstances, a trio of Titans' ships called the Centaur Unit is entering the Republic of Zeon to relieve a similar flotilla that has been patrolling a region referred to as Split 4 - colonies 19 through 24. The Titans' hubris and proclivity for secrecy is about to write another forgotten story in the margins of history's pages. |
