Gotham City... A city where people used to care about one another... A city a person could call home. Now? It was nothing more than a crime ridden, immoral scum generator; filled to the gills with lying, backstabbing, and murderous criminals who'd sell out their own mothers just to get a slice of the big 3 coming in and going out - those being; money, drugs, and weapons. The only thing you couldn't get easy in this town was power. No, that was something you had to earn here - from law abiding citizen to criminal garbage. It was all the same. Even the police struggled to earn power over the scum of Gotham city. Nothing they did could root them out; until one night, a mysterious man entered the city from the shadows... Looming in the darkness... Preying on those that induced fear into the hearts of the fair citizens of Gotham. At first; people thought of him as an it. It was a monster, a vampire, a demon... A bat! Rumors spread for months about what it was, who it was, and what he — or rather "it" — wanted. It seemed to target only those of Gotham that were considered filth by the law enforcement; from common street thugs, to hitmen, to even head mob bosses themselves. For some time it had moderate to incredible success; forcing every little bit of the crime syndicate down the drains until it finally found the big kahuna of them all: Sal Maroni and Scarface; two rival mob leaders. EVERYONE knew Maroni, but very little was known of Scarface, not even what he looked like. The two "gentlemen" never got along from the sounds of it, and often had their toads get into serious fights with one another. These were often broken up by both police work and "Bat" work alike. There are rumors spreading around more recently that this "bat" is actually a man in a mask, and that he's working alongside the Commissioner of police... But no one has found proof of that so far. Tonight was the night "he" had been waiting for, for oh so long - the night "The Batman" would finally take down Scarface and Sal Maroni... Simultaneously. "Where's Antonio!?" the one thug asked the other. "Beats me," his partner responded. A batarang quickly flew out of nowhere and knocked both men out cold, then returned to the hand that had thrown it. Then, the dark figure jumped from his perched position and landed on top of another criminal toting a machine gun. Bones crackled, the man grunted for a split second, and then silence. Rain droplets started colliding on the masked figure's cape and cowl as he stood upright. He said nothing as he walked over to the edge of the small building, hopping onto the edge and then pouncing off into the alleyway. Time to play. |

-----Gordon----- Commissioner Gordon walked slowly towards the objective building. Rain pounded down on his task force and him as thunder and lightning flashed and cracked overhead. Small rivers of water flowed down the street and into various rain gutters placed alongside the road to prevent a flooding. The street they were on had been blockaded off incase a gunfight ensued, so no civilian lives would be in danger. Outside of this barricade there were several other guards to prevent reckless news reporters from getting in too close and putting their own lives in danger. "Is everyone in position?" asked Gordon, approaching a man dressed in the common S.W.A.T apparel; a bulletproof vest and the like. "Yes, sir," said the S.W.A.T member, throwing a quick salute to the Commissioner "Then tell all units to stand by and prepare to breech! We're getting Sal tonight," he exclaimed as a bolt of lightning streaked across the sky loudly. "Yes si-" the S.W.A.T member's confirmation was cut off as the explosion reached their ears, tought Gordon knew what he had said. Tonight they were going after Sal Maroni, one the biggest mob bosses in the city of Gotham. Maroni was wanted for so many things Gordon could hardly keep track. Murder, extortion, gun and drugs dealing to start off the list gently. "All units, commence," said Gordon into a radio. Shortly after one of the S.W.A.T members stood infront of the door with a shotgun and blasted off the hinges with two quick blasts. Immediately he kicked down the door and the S.W.A.T members swooped in like flies to honey. "Breeching, breeching!" I sat quietly in my study, my right foot up on my knee. I twittered my thumbs impatiently, keenly listening to the telephone and the radio both, eagerly awaiting the report on the raid at Sal Maroni's house. My name is Harvey Dent, a prosicuting attorney that has won many cases against many different people, criminal or not. I wasn't sure if I should be eager to hear from Gordon or not. There was no telling what surprises Maroni had in store for Gordon, S.W.A.T and the GCPD. Sal was one of the most wanted criminal masterminds, and you don't become one of the most wanted by being careless. Sal was a ruthless criminal who would sooner kill his family than be caught by the police department. I continued to sit quietly in my lounging chair, always tossing over the probabilities in my mind. I was a very active thinker, and most of the time it didn't help. I listened to the rain slowly falling onto my window as bolts of lightning and thunder lit up my dark study. The only light that was on in my study was a small tabletop lamp. I kept all the other lights off for a reason in which I knew not myself. Come on, Harvey. It's in your pocket... No, do not. Yuo must break out of that habit. Oh, please. One more time isn't going to hurt anything. But if you do it, it will be harder to break away from it. I looked down and reached into my pocket, feeling my cellphone. It would be so easy to call Gordon... That's it... now, just pull it out! Do not do it, Harvey. You may disrupt him. Do it! Call him! All it takes is the pressing of a few buttons! Harvey, do not do it. It is not worth the risk. I let go of the cellphone and looked over to the desk. Upon it sat a quarter; a mere regular quarter. Something I sometimes used for making a decision when I knew not what to do, though I didn't use it often. "Heads I do it," I said to myself, grabbing it up slowly. "Tails I don't..." I flipped the coin quickly into the air quickly, watching it rotate countless times. It came back down with a dull thud to the floor. I swallowed deeply and looked down at the ground. Tails... I took in a deep breath and sighed heavily, the decision made for me. I sat back down lazily in ym lounging chair, awaiting the verdict. Edited by Vincent Valentine, May 30 2009, 01:44 PM.

The Dark knight flitted from shadow to shadow. The darkness was his only friend and ally at times like these. It was his protector and his weapon. Without it, he was a man in costume with only gadgets and fighting skills to his name. With it, he was the terror of the night. Spying the fire escape, Batman aimed at the railing with his grappling hook. The metal sang quietly as the hook hit the rail. He quickly ascended the rope and wound it up. Peeking into a window, He noticed three guards with assault rifles. The room was dark with only a single light to dimly These grunts all are heavily armed... This must be the storage room. Why put so much trouble into guarding a second story room otherwise? He silently opened the window and slipped in. The room was filled with boxes. He waited above until one of the guards left. Seeing his opportunity, he swiftly locked the door. One of the guards heard the bolt slide and motioned his partner to check out the door. With his back covered by his partner, the guard approached the door. Noticing the door was bolted shut, he turned to warn his partner. The other guard was gone. Batman dragged the unconcious body over to one of the corners. He melded once more with the shadows. He watched as the other guard took out his flashlight and nervously looked around for his partner. The remaining guard yelled into the shadow. "Frank, is this a joke. It is not funny! Come out now and stop this foolishness." The dark knight snuck up behind the goon and grabbed him in a headlock. "Where is Maroni?" He demanded, tighting his grip. |

---At Maroni's mansion--- "They're here!" a thug yelled down the hallway, "We gotta do somethin'!" "Quick! Let the boss know not to come by here from his little trip, then let's book!" another one barked. Meanwhile, the men downstairs opened fire on the SWAT team that was busting through the door. They weren't going down without a fight, nor did they want to escape and be labeled cowards. Not only was this the worst night for a bust, but for it to happen at Maroni's own home was just bad for business. This was also the night his men were making a deal with Scarface's cronies a block away from here... Funnily enough; Batman's current location. It seemed as though the two gangs were going to finally make amends with one another, but the combination of Bat interference and law enforcement would probably undo all of that. The bust itself wouldn't be happening right now if it weren't for the bribed cops having been rooted out by the likes of Commissioner Gordon and DA Harvey Dent... And Batman.... It was quite annoying for all the criminals in Gotham, and one of the few things keeping an outright war from breaking out until now. --- One block from the Maroni mansion --- "What the hell are you guys doing!?" Maroni's right-hand man, DiAngelo demanded to know. "We're just making a little change in the deal," Scarface's main man, Rhino, said just before blasting DiAngelo and three others away with an SMG. "Alright! Let's blow this joint!" Rhino exclaimed, as he grabbed a briefcase full of money. "What was that!?" a man asked as he ran into the room, only to be popped off by Mugsy, the much smaller, but deadly aiming henchman accompanying Rhino. If it weren't for the fact they were about to cross paths with Batman, they'd be home free. --- Maroni's mysterious whereabouts --- Maroni was surprisingly in no real danger (for the moment) where he was at; relaxing in a wondrous apartment building blocks away from the scene of action, although a quick phone call made short work of that. "WHAT!?" he shouted in shock, "You're tellin' me that the cops are bustin' down my door?" he asked the two-bit loser to repeat. "DAMN IT!" He shouted, throwing the phone across the room, quickly rushing out the door and for his car. He needed to get out of town, but first he needed to inform his wife about the situation. "Hello, baby? Are ya there?" Maroni anxiously wanted to know, "Please, please, baby. Answered the phone!" "Hello?" his wife's voice called out on the other end. "Oh, thank God!" he started, "Listen. No time for talk. You need to get yourself and the kids the hell outta town. The cops are on to me finally, and if they're on to me, you know who else will be," he said ambiguously. "That thing in the news?" his wife asked, starting to panic. "Yeah. That, and I wouldn't put it beyond my rivals to wanna take a bite out of the situation if they got the chance," Sal added. OOC: Okay, Lupire. Have Batman bump into Rhino, Mugsy and the two creeps with them after you're through scaring the crap out of the other thug you've got in your death grip.

-----Gordon----- Almost as soon as the S.W.A.T members burst down the door, several of them were mowed down. One of the S.W.A.T members pinned himself against the side of the door, pulling the pin on a flashbang. "Flashbang out!" he exclaimed tossing it in. It exploded in a blinding bright light as the S.W.A.T members covered their eyes. "Go! Go! Get in there, eliminate the hostiles and turn over furniture, tables, anythig for cover!" yelled the one that was obviously in charge. Several S.W.A.T members ran in at once, firing at any mobster not behind something. They grabbed tables, chairs and couches and flipped them over, crouching behind them. "Tell Charlie team to begin their attack," he told another S.W.A.T member standing next to him. He nodded and took out a small radio. "Charlie Team; Operation Mob Cleanup is go. You are Green to engage." After the S.W.A.T member finished his transmission, C4 planted in a circle on the back wall of the house went off in a loud explosion, creating a large hole. "Breeching!" One of them tossed in a flashbang as the S.W.A.T covered their eyes, then flooded in through the back. I sat impatiently fidgeting my thumbs. The tension was begining to eat me alive. I glanced up at the clock ever so often. Minutes felt like hours, as if the very fabric of time had been slowed. "Come on, Gordon," I said, shaking my legs. I was starting to grow impatient on the operation. It shouldn't have taken this long. Come on. Call. It won't hurt. Gordon is very busy. You must not disturb him. He's not busy. His lard ass is probably sitting on the sidelines with a bag of popcorn. He could be bravely fighting alongside his fellow GCPD members. You must not call him! I got to my feet and started pacing the room, forgetting the quarter that lay tails-up on the floor. I walked in circles and lines, straight and crooked. Thoughts rushed through my head, all the possible things that could happen. "Maybe just... one more time," I said as I walked over to the quarter and grabbed it up again. "Same as before..." I tossed the coin into the air, watching it rapidly spin. It seemed like it almost hovered, teasing me as if it wasn't going to come out. Then it fell to the floor with a cling. I glanced down at the quarter. Tails again. I took in a deep breath and sighed heavily, begining my pacing once again. He's not doing anything. Call him. You do not want to be thought of as impatient. |

"I, I don't know!" The thugs revolting squealing and sputtering disgusted the Dark Knight. With a threatening brandish of his fist, and his signature growl, the Batman says, "You're lying!" In response, the thug fainted. A mistake; he could have known something. Discarding the unconscious man, the black-on-black figure walked to the nearest door, and pulled it open. Reacting quickly to the two people on the other side, he flies into a flurry of attacks, knocking out one of the men, the smaller.

Rhino was completely taken by surprise as he saw at least two of his men hit the floor behind him. "THE BAT!" he expressed in shock. "I ain't gettin' taken down by you!" he hollered as he whipped out his SMG to mow Batman down. "WHOA WHOA!" Mugsy yelled in fear, diving for cover to avoid being shot at. |

"OW!" was all Rhino could yelp as he stumbled on one foot, quickly grabbing his leg as it throbbed in pain. He nearly fell backwards, but soon regained his footing and threw a powerful punched aimed at Batman. As this was happening - Mugsy had stood back up and pulled out his pistol. He wasn't as nearly concerned for Rhino since it didn't seem like Rhino was for him just ten seconds ago. ---Harvey Dent's office--- *knock knock* "Harvey?", a voice called out. "Oh... I thought you might be busy," the man said, quickly stepping in for a moment. "It's your wife," he said, stepping outside the room again and letting her in. -----Gordon----- "Clear!" Four more S.W.A.T members ran into the two rooms on either side of the room. "Clear!" "Clear!" "Clear!" "I've got a live one!" one of them said as he ran over to one of the thugs and pinned him down to the ground, pinning his arms behind his back. He hauled him up from the ground and began to escort him out. "Move upstairs! Clear out the rest of this building! I want Sal found!" he exclaimed. The rest of the S.W.A.T team ran upstairs, gunfire ensuing shortly after. "Oh, no, please. Let her in," I said, walking over to the door. Shortly after I saw my beautiful wife, Grace, walk into the room. "Harvey," she said, "you didn't come home... so I got worried..." "I'm sorry, love," I said, continuing my pacing, practically brushing her off. "I'm waiting on this call from Gordon about the raid on Sal Maroni's mansion-" "That's why you didn't come home?" she asked in frustration. "Harvey! Tonight was our anniversary!" she said, setting down her purse. "How could you put a criminal over me?" she asked. "I didn't mean to. I was just-" "You're always putting your job over me!" "No! I'm not! I'm trying to make enough money to support us!" I said, starting to raise my voice. "I know! But it hurts so bad when you forget important things like this..." she said, looking down at the ground, her voice starting to break up. I was taken back by this, and quickly rushed to her, taking her hands. "I'm sorry, love... really, I am," I cooed to her, putting my index finger under her chin, bringing her head up gently. "I don't mean to put my job over you... you're my baby. The last thing I want to do is hurt you... but I often mess up... please forgive me," I said, siding my arms around her waist, hugging her close. "I know, Harvey," she said. We kissed gently as everything went silent for a moment. "I love you," I said to her, smiling gently. "I love you, too," she said as we hugged each other closely. ((Mag, I liked your second idea, but I'm not going to do that just yet. =P And my dad changed his mind... we won't leave out of here for another hour and a half.)) Ignoring the larger man for now, Batman turns upon the smaller, who has just now gotten out his gun. Perhaps not as alarming as the SMG, but he shouldn't have underestimated Mugsy. Quickly, wishing to end this quickly, before Rhino recovered, he gave a quick kick to the bottom of the guns barrel. Instinctively, the trigger is pulled, sending the bullet into the ceiling. With another punch, Mugsy is down. Unexpectedly though, Rhino has recovered faster than Batman would have thought. His punch, though poorly aimed, glances across the Dark Knights shoulder as he turns to face the gargantuan man. |

Deftly jumping over the kick that Rhino attempts, Batman throws his hardest punch, right into the face of Rhino. Mumbling a bit, he falls over, obviously blacked out. A murmur of sound comes from behind the Dark Knight, and he whirls, his cape swirling around him dramatically. Mugsy was awakening, and he'd need to be questioned. Doing the usual routine, Batman growls, "Where's Maroni?" |

Coughing and wheezing; Mugsy regained consciousness, albeit slowly. "W-Wha..?" he barely muffled out through his lips. "Maloonnii?" he asked with a dazed and confused sounding voice. "Man," he started, "if I knew w-where he was, I'd let the boss man know right away so—" Mugsy was slowly fading out, but quickly re-awoke to complete his sentence, "The boss would have his head on a silver plater," he finally finished. OOC: Go on... Ask him where his boss is. You know you want to.

"I swear t' God! I don't know where Maroni is! Don't hurt me! I DON'T KNOW!" he pleaded, getting more and more scared for his life by the minute. It was just then that rapid footsteps could be heard from behind Batman - Rhino was on the move, heading down the stairs. Decisions, decisions, decisions. Batman could very well continue scaring Mugsy to death, but he could just as easily tail Rhino and find Scarface instead... Or he could just forget the whole thing and go off to find Maroni on his own terms. The choice was his. |

Mugsys affiliation was clear. He was one of those miserable wretches who would sell out their employers for the smallest share of the pie. Abandoning him with a rather healthy bruise on his forehead, the Batman pursued Rhino, keeping carefully out of sight. This wasn't hard, since the man made more noise than his namesake. The thought occured to Batman that he could be just running for his life to the exit, but even then, he could find Maroni on his own. |

Rhino didn't care about the others. He figured he had made the slip without The Bat noticing, and was heading for his car just as he busted down the front door to that building they were in. He was dead wrong. Hopping into his car and ramming the key into the ignition, he was desperately trying to flee for his life. "Gotta get back to the boss! Gotta get back to the boss!" was all he could keep thinking as he sped off in his car. Little did he know someone had left him with a little surprise on the back of his car. ---Meanwhile--- "The whole mansion is clear, Commissioner," the SWAT team leader announced to Gordon as he stepped down the stairs. "Damn, this place is HUGE!" another SWAT member exclaimed, "I could fit my house, my kid's house and my parents' house ALL in here and STILL have room for a garage," he finished. "Okay, okay... Let's get on with our jobs. Take these two dirtbags in," the team leader ordered just as he walked up to Gordon. "Sir, there's no sign of Maroni or his family here - but SWAT teams are being deployed just outside his summer home out of town... We'll get him one way or the other," the man assured Gordon. Indeed. Gordon knew that they'd catch Maroni and all of the rest soon enough, but not because of their efforts alone - Batman — the man Gordon was secretly working with — was hot on Maroni's trail. Batman had appeared to be a very skilled detective, and had leaks from Gordon himself that helped guide The Batman around better than before. With the combination of knowledge the GCPD had, with Batman's ability to go beyond the law to preserve the law; practically none of the criminal scumbags could stay safe for long. |

With a quick check to his scanner to make sure the tracker was working, the Dark Knight retreated back into the installation. Hurriedly, he follows the hallways to what appears to be the most important point, a rather large storage room in the middle of the compound. Looking at a few of the boxes, Batman rips one of the smaller ones open. Inside, are an assortment of bullets, rather large calibers, stacked high. Grabbing a communications device from his belt, he contacts Commissioner Gordon. While waiting for a reply, Batman strides down the rows of boxes, and seeing that nobody could be hiding here, leaves the room.

"Quite. Thank you," said Gordon to the S.W.A.T member that had just given him the information on the current situation. He took in a deep breath and sighed, walking out of the mansion. He needed to call Harvey. He reached into his pocket when, all of a sudden, his beeper went off. He quickly silenced it by pressing a button on it as another S.W.A.T member walked over, hearing the sound. Luckily that was all he had to do to let Batman know he was on his way. It was unknown, even to Harvey, among the GPD (Because I don't count City as part of it) that he was secretly working with Batman. "What was that, sir?" he asked. Thinking on his feet, Gordon quickly took out his cellphone and flipped it open, acting like he had recieved a text message. "An anonymous message," he said. "It's a nice tip on where Maroni is," he lied, flipping it closed. "Let me round up the S.W.A.T. We'll accompany you." "No," he said, "they want me to come alone. Don't worry, I'm quite capable of protecting myself. I'll be back," he said, quickly taking off wthout giving the S.W.A.T member time to respond. Harvey will just have to wait. |
