THE EYES OF DEATH
[ * * ]
prologue.

"...iese..."

"...se... Lie... se...!"

"Liese!!"

The sounds reverberated in his mind. This guy was in a deep sleep, but after he heard the sounds, he started to toss and turn slowly, groaning and desiring more sleep. Soon, a loud cracking sound could be heard and the boy jolted upright, growling in pain as there was a girl standing next to him, looking indignant. The boy scratched his head and whined. "What was that for? That hurt!" The girl standing next to him let out a sigh and turned away. "You were unconscious for days after that Shadowspawn attack," she said. "After you finally showed signs of waking, I decided to forcefully wake you up."

"Come on, couldn't you have given me a few more hours! Misha!"

The girl, Misha, sighed and eyed the small pendant that was on the side-table by the bed of the boy. "Liese, you are not fully aware of how much you are in danger," she said, raising her finger up and down like a strict lecturer. "That pendant of yours, the Astrolabe, is something very valuable. It attracts many Shadowspawn and Soul Harvesters looking for a quick buck. It's a good thing I was there, or you would have been killed for sure." she said sternly looking at Liese. Liese, the boy who was resting, had just been attacked the other night by a group of Shadowspawn while he was out hunting for food. He was saved by Misha, his mentor, who took him under her wing after learning of his pendant, the Astrolabe, several years ago. Since then, Liese was under some form of protection while learning many things about the world around him, as well as the art of Charms. Liese looked around the room and saw that his pouch of Charms was placed on the shelf across the bed he was lying in. He sighed in relief. Misha sighed with disappointment and was walking out the room.

"You need more rest, Liese," she said. "We will be moving out to Windscar within a couple of days. We have a job to do there." Misha looked both angry and a little worried, deep down she knew that Liese had a trinket that was much more than it seemed. Yet, the boy was ignorant of its importance. Misha then left the room, presumably for tea. Liese remained sitting on the bed, under its sheets, and then turned to face his pendant, the Astrolabe. The Astrolabe was given to him by his deceased mother, a high ranking Warden who was assassinated by Soul Harvesters under the order of Grandmaster Greydam, one of the elite researchers of the Soul Harvesters. His goal was to take the Astrolabe for himself, but Liese, at a young age, was able to escape after his mother and father's last ditch attempt to save him by showing him through a secret passage. Shortly after that, they were ambushed and killed due to sheer numbers.

Liese gripped the Astrolabe tightly as it made a faint glow before returning to its old dull self. He wore the pendant and stood up. He saw himself in a mirror and saw the massive scar across his chest where the Shadowspawn struck him. He cringed and wondered how Misha managed to make him recover so fast. He imagined he would indeed be a goner had he been reamed even more by the demons. Liese sighed as he fixed himself and got dressed into his robes. Though a practitioner of the magick arts by heart, he was still able to wield a mean spear and was capable of defending himself from other humans. Just... Shadowspawn, would be a bit much for him on his own. Liese sighed and left the room, to see the sitting room where Misha was enjoying a small cup of tea. She looked towards the boy and smiled.

"Fancy a cup of tea?"

"That would be splendid."

Liese took a seat opposite Misha as the girl poured a cup of milk tea for him. The boy looked outside through the window right by him, and saw nothing but the birds flying in the sky, and vast greenery. Nothing like the dark scene he experienced a few days ago, where he was being pursued by vicious Shadowspawn, and was knocked unconscious by one before Misha came to rescue him with her expertise in summoning. Liese sighed. "Misha, I have a question."

"What is it?"

"What is this?"

"The Astrolabe?"

"What else could I be asking about?"

"..."

Misha looked away with disdain, and Liese could only think that even Misha didn't know, or she simply did not want to divulge any information. Liese looked at Misha in silence for a few moments before sighing and waving his hand away dismissively, saying "never mind" repeatedly softly. Misha sighed once more and looked outside, before seeing some strange amalgamations materializing, causing entropy in the countryside. She gasped. "Liese, stay in here. Something is happening outside. You can follow me if I don't return in five." she said, before abruptly leaving the cottage they were in. Her tea was half-done. Liese sighed and looked at the window Misha had just looked at, and saw a trio of familiar looking Shadowspawn.

"They came back?! I thought Misha vanquished them!" Liese said, before backing away and running to another part of the house in the hopes the demonic presences didn't spot him through the window. Soon, there was a loud crash from outside. Liese made a small yelp in surprise and kept his pouch of charms close to him, and soon went outside to check the commotion. Misha was kneeling right by the door, she had just been struck by the Shadowspawn. She did not seem hurt too much, but she was tired. "Damn," she cursed. "I didn't expect them to come back. Well, two of them are gone for good, but the other o--" she was about to finish her explanation where a streak of darkness rushed past, and Misha rolled over, causing the streak to collide into the wall, and burst right through it. Liese growled. "I just repaired that wall last month! Damn it!" The Shadowspawn materialized and stared deeply at Liese, but more importantly, it stared at the Astrolabe. "Guh!" Liese fell on his bottom and whisked up a charm from his pouch just as the Shadowspawn was going to leap for the kill. Swish! A spear had emerged from Liese's hands and pierced right through the Shadowspawn's mouth, a glowing lance with a fleur-de-lis engraved on its edge, as the crest emblazoned itself on the Shadowspawn, causing it to lurch back and reposition itself on the ground. Liese could feel a protective energy welling around him. Misha soon stood up and commanded her summoned beasts that she had conjured earlier to assault the now vulnerable Shadowspawn as she herself pelted it with javelins of earth. The beast of darkness soon roared in pain as it slowly began to fade away with the wind. When it had disappeared, Misha and Liese were looking at each other. Liese's spear dissipated, its purpose served, and the boy sighed.

"We have to get out of here, Liese." Misha said.

"Where to?"

"...Off to Windscar, then."

"...I've got nothing for the occasion..."

"Take it like a man."

"Ah, you..."

And so, Liese and Misha left their cottage, heading to the frozen Northern land of Windscar.

HEY TRANCE

I enjoyed this.

Have you been writing your own personal mythology while we weren't looking because now that I think about it you've written quite a bit of fanfiction over time.

But anyway. Fight scenes are tough to write without them coming off as too rigid. I think you should describe more. And make Misha less exposition-tastic. Just my two cents.
