Silvan gazed down upon these individuals and was confused. He was also cold and clutched his jacket tighter to his ribs. Fortunately the first hints of the sun's glow could be perceived in the horizon, and in an hour or so it would be dawn. So there was that. First he concluded that perhaps the lady and the shifty man were not in cahoots, after all. Perhaps they were not even bandits. Only time would tell that, though. "Ren Fenghu. Call me Fenghu." It was not hard to tell that the lady--um, Fenghu--was not from around these parts. Her exotic name, outfit and mannerisms suggested mysterious origins. This land was a vast and strange one, after all, and even Silvan had not met the many peoples of the world in his diplomatic sojourns. He briefly recalled Minister Zamangol and grimaced. So much for diplomatic sojourns. In fact, it would be in his best interest to get away from Ishtar and the general region, and hastily. Clumsily slipping down the side of the wyvern's torso, Silvan dismounted for the first time since the showdown in the stable. Strangely enough, the animal did not show any signs of shaking off the charm spell's effects. It still appeared to be under his full command. Perhaps it was because it was already domesticated in the first place? It snorted and loitered in place, seemingly disinterested. "Um... Well. Fenghu." Silvan gestured carefully. "I now come to the realization that perhaps your intentions were noble after all, and I simply, err, misread your actions." He began to articulate a lengthy apology which would ideally segue into his recruitment of her as a personal bodyguard in order to more safely traverse nearby terrain. But, unexpectedly, the mysterious assailant piped in. "... I guess I was actually supposed to be robbing from you... I'm sorry." Silvan turned and looked down at the waif. He was rather well-fed, you know, for a waif. But even under cover of darkness it was not difficult to see that something about the boy was off. His eyes were watery, inky black blots. His nose was a barely prominent, cartilagenous snub. His oddly discolored skin suggested a rough texture. But robbery! Well. It was to be expected. Children of the streets have few resources and at times it is perfectly understandable that they would turn to heinous crime such as the kind that Silvan had definitely never taken part in. What intrigued him, more than anything, was the boy's strange appearance and his apparently disproportionate strength. This was the same person that he had seen lift a stable door and smash it over two grown adults' heads, after all. Not to mention that the wyvern's head-on tackle had apparently done nothing more than briefly incapacitate him. With all this suddenly in mind, Silvan took a nonchalant step back. "And you, boy--uh, Keyu--where could you be from... ?" Edited by Casiotune, Aug 27 2011, 06:12 AM.

Keyu shifted and shuffled his feet nervously, trying to ignore the familiar feelings of eyes running up and down his chunky body. It was somewhat embarassing, but seemed to be a precursor to every job offer he'd ever had, so he let the observation pass over him and hoped he didn't make a bad impression. He considered giving Silvan a similiar looking over, but the fact was, Keyu had no idea what to make of his strange fine yet disheveled clothes, diplomatic manners and clumsy awkwardness. He was a strange mix of contradictions, but at the very least he appeared friendly, which the other two people on this platform did not seem particularily inclined to be at the moment. "And you, boy--uh, Keyu--where could you be from... ?" Keyu flinched as though he'd been struck. It was a familiar question, but never comfortable, because he simply had no answer. "I...I I'm sorry, I don't know... I mostly...travelled around the Coast I think" He nervously stared at his feet once more and grabbed one of his few remaining pieces of bread to stuff into his mouth anxiously. |

Silvan raised an eyebrow. "The coast, huh? ... Well." The boy was a strange one. Keyu was an exotic name, which, assuming it was his given name and not one he had taken in his days of vagrancy, possibly betrayed a southeastern origin. The many islands that dotted the southeast sea housed largely insular communities with strange beliefs and rituals, animistic tribes with temples for the sun and moon, the harvest and the tide. More importantly, Silvan watched the boy wolf down a piece of what was certainly stale bread with great enthusiasm. He seemed perpetually hungry. For a moment he caught a glimpse of unexpectedly large and sharp teeth. The idea had been forming in his mind for some time now, but suddenly the plan had unveiled itself. Both Keyu and Fenghu were clearly capable warriors, although in very different ways. Though they were strangers who most likely hailed from strange lands, Silvan was simply certain that his good looks (for Fenghu) and big-brotherly charm (for Keyu) would easily gain their trust. Fenghu seemed to have seen better times--financially, at least--, and this boy was clearly working every day simply to find something to eat. He could probably satisfy both of them. And if things worked out fine, he would have two competent escorts to traverse the dangerous land while looking for his big break. Ah, but what to do about the other man in the black uniform? He had been suspiciously silent all this time. His clothes and demeanor, not to mention the strange type of sword that he carried, perhaps custom-forged for his use, seemed to indicate noble origins. And possibly a connection to a military force. He was too gaunt and pale to be from around these parts, though. Perhaps an emissary from the north? It was hard to tell. He would have to be a bit more clever with this one. Maybe he would agree to a type of short-term business partnership. I-scratch-your-back, you-scratch-mine kind of deal. Or he would turn him in, now that he knew that Silvan hailed from House Miser. Oh well. "Say! How would you like to feast on scrumptious banquets every night?" Silvan asked Keyu, putting on his best smile. |

A toothy grin, and an offer of some kind were made by Silvan, Though Keyu barely understood the words, and stared blankly for a moment "Scrumptious Banquet" was not a commonly used term on the streets. His ears perked at "feast" though. Even if he meant gold of some kind, Most employers were usually happy to help Keyu Spend his money or hold on to it for him for safe keeping. Still, Keyu knew enough that this was just the bait. He nodded slowly imploring the strange man to continue with his offer... |

The boy's empty, dull stare clued Silvan in. Okay, so perhaps "scrumptious" was not in vocabulary. He could not be blamed if he was not "with it" as far as commoner parlance went. Could that count as a blunder? "Aww, what I meant..." He started, as he ruffled the kid's hair as fraternally as he possibly could, "was food! Food in vast quantities. Enough food to satisfy a growing young man like you!" Then he took a step back. "Of course, there are conditions. You see, I am a traveler. A traveler in search of adventures. And it would be wonderful if you could accompany me on this journey, as the land is great and dangerous." |

Fenghu sighed as she managed to compose herself and this time, not feel a very hard-to-suppress urge to murder everyone within the vicinity. Perhaps today had just been a pretty bad day - she wanted to help, and in the end all that happened was she was basically punished for something she didn't even really do, except possibly self-defense. She had silently but attentively listened to the brief conversation between the merchant, which she STILL wasn't entirely sure if she caught his name or not, and the assailant who she learned was Keyu. Fenghu did catch Keyu confessing he was actually supposed to rob Silvan, which only made her sigh in response - she was right after all. But what's done is done, and there was no use crying over spilt milk. She stood up and looked at Keyu, sizing him up - for as fearsome as he could be, in the end, he was just a poor boy looking for lots of food to eat... Doing these things just for sustenance! What a fate. Though... she could tell he was intimidated by her. Was it her furor? Perhaps it was. Fenghu decided she needed to change that. She sighed and looked at Keyu with a look of genuine expression on her face. "Had I known you had such reasons for the things you do, I would have tried to help you out, you know?" Fenghu said, placing one of her hands on her cheek. "Not sure what mister merchant over there can promise you, but if you're going with him, I will follow. I can't just leave someone like you alone." |

Silvan hardly needed to simplify the descriptions for Keyu, he was hardly in a situation to turn down jobs, but once he did the basic idea of stuffing his face till he couldn't eat another bite, had him drooling a little from the corner of his mouth. But moreso than that, with an unrelenting veneer of friendliness, and no hesitation Silvan reached out to pat him on the head. Perhaps Silvan was insincere and all was an act to gain Keyu's Affection, but Keyu guilelessly accepted it, daring to believe that the man was simply as absurd as he seemed, and came from a world where trust and camaraderie far beyond what Keyu knew from the streets and back alleys. Keyu smilled a sheepish half smile, sneaking glances up at Silvan from his shuffling feet. Silvan continued his offer"Of course, there are conditions. You see, I am a traveler. A traveler in search of adventures. And it would be wonderful if you could accompany me on this journey, as the land is great and dangerous." Keyu considered thoughtfully. It sounded like simple bodyguard work, which he had occasionally done, though most merchants did not want a "Ghastly bloated beast child" in their retinue. But the words "Journey" and "Adventure" seemed faint and exotic to him, as strange and wonderous and out of his reach as the clouds in the sky Fenghu interrupted his reverie "Had I known you had such reasons for the things you do, I would have tried to help you out, you know?" Fenghu said, placing one of her hands on her cheek. "Not sure what mister merchant over there can promise you, but if you're going with him, I will follow. I can't just leave someone like you alone." Seeing the foreign woman without the dangerous air of hostility and readiness for combat was a strange contrast. The practiced control and efficiency still embodied her every move, but without her fierce spirit it took on a strangely beautiful quality. Yet it never lost the dangerous edge either. But olive branches were quite clearly being extended, and the world seemed to be a different place than the one he had just been in "Thank you... I think I would like to go with him err you" He said to alternatingly to both Fenghu and Silvan, before turning to Fenghu once more "I'd be glad if you came too... I don't think I have ever been on an Adventure before" Though he wondered what she meant by "can't leave someone like him alone"... |

"Ah... The taste of adventure," Fenghu said, her voice now no longer having the vitriol it did a while ago, taking on a more casual tone. "After all, we have not much else to do here in the middle of nowhere." Fenghu idly ran two fingers down her blade. She looked at Keyu, this... strange-looking beastly boy-man-person. A fearsome person outwardly, but perhaps, there is an actual human somewhere in there... Fenghu didn't know much about these sorts of beings, but she was sure that if he displayed signs of actual humanity, there may be a way to help Keyu become more in control of his strength. "Alright, then, I shall go with you." Fenghu said, looking specifically at Keyu and blatantly ignoring Silvan. She had hoped her accompanying the two would be seen by Silvan as more of a bonus than an acceptance of his offer. "I just wonder about your... family." Fenghu said, sounding a little distant, but at the same time, her voice wavered, as if with an uncharacteristic sadness... She was reminded of her own family back at home. |

"Ah! Excellent, excellent!" Silvan quickly turned away from Keyu to face the ambivalent Fenghu, who seemed to be trying her best to ignore him. "Your combat skills will be an invaluable asset to this entourage, miss Feng-hoo," Silvan began, hardly registering that he was butchering her name with every utterance. "And of course, you can rest assured that you will be handsomely repaid for your services as an escort... Err, bodyguard... You know what I mean." If that didn't smooth things over between them, he didn't know what would. Silvan now turned to the other man, the one in a black uniform, who so far had remained at the fringe of their conversation. He wasn't sure of how to approach this one, so he began casually. "And sir, what say you? It appears that you've found yourself in a predicament very similar to ours." |

Aldous had just been taking these things in pretty carefully, and indeed, Silvan was right. "So I have," he replied, considering this all briefly. Briefly compared to the silence before, anyway. "I'm not really one for adventure, but I've spent some time running away. I guess that's kind of like adventure. I've been trying to get away from my family. They're in quicksand and trying to drag me in with 'em... so, you get it. I'm Aldous Hogarth... but don't tell anyone else that. I'd hate for them to find out about that Information travels to them very fast, so I'd prefer to act under a different name, lest they start trying to hunt me down. Can't say if they'll find me, but why take a risk?" As if he hated taking risks. That was an essential part of his life. Just being here was kind of a risk, to him, especially with what he'd just said in mind. "However, if an adventure we're to have... I'll gladly lend you what I can. I think I could get us some funds; I left home with a few objects of decent value, but they'd be of more value heading into a shop. Of course, not a shop around here." |

By focusing her attention on Keyu even if only to spite Silvan, Keyu felt somewhat flustered, he might have blushed though it was difficult to tell in the low light. "I..don't really have a family" Keyu said flatly. The word didn't hold a powerful meaning to him, it had always seemed yet one more thing that rich people collected. From Fenghu's tone, and expression, it may have been something very important indeed. His contemplations on the subject took on further confusion when Aldous (finally breaking his lurking silence) made mention of his family to Silvan. Aldous however had a different sentiment entirely. Family you long for and family you flee from, It was a lot to chew on. Keyu exhaled tiredly and collapsed onto his wide backside, and gazed skyward. The stars and sky were clearer and yet colder away from the lamps of the cities, though he knew they wouldn't be in the sky for long, and then he was to be going on...an Adventure. He slowly turnedn his head to Silvan who seemed at his happiest when he was speaking endlessly, it was a strange thing to listen to, he almost never seemed to pause for breath. Let alone leave a space in the conversation for someone to get a word in edgewise. And so he rambled on and on to such a degree, Keyu forgot he wanted to ask where they were going.... |

Silvan did a double take after Aldous introduced himself. Before him stood the infamous Aldous Hogarth, black sheep of the respected merchant family. He had never met any of the Hogarths in person but had general knowledge of them thanks to his cosmopolitan education. He wasn't sure of what Aldous had done to deserve the moniker he had. Rumor was it that he had managed to burn down the Hogarth mausoleum, squander the family fortune and sodomize an entire village of kobolds over the course of a single night. Certainly some people did not speak kindly of him. But he concluded that such rumors were probably exaggerated, and held his tongue. Besides, he was feeling something warm swell in his chest. Was it the spirit of... camaraderie? Or something like that. "Aldous Hogarth of the Hogarth family?" Silvan blinked once, then twice. "My, what a pleasant surprise...! I am Silvan Miser, though I believe you already caught that thanks to Minister Zamangul. You know; the fat, traitorous cur. Our families had good relations for generations, but he has always been an avaricious sycophant. Surely he will run off and tell my family of my whereabouts as soon as possible." Aldous seemed to raise an eyebrow at this, not entirely sure of what the problem was there. "Oh. Well... My family is not particularly approving of anyone who breaks out of the preset path that they laid out for their children... um. I am currently traveling. To expand my horizons, you see. I yearn for adventure. Wanderlust all up in this business." Aldous appeared to be even more perplexed than before. "Yyyeah..." Silvan raised a hand to cover his eyes. They hadn't spent much time talking upon the platform and already the sun was rising over endless grasslands. A gust of crisp wind blew through tall grasses like a shimmering wave. He caught a whiff of the sea's breeze. "... Well, then." He turned around and looked at his new entourage, as it were. A mysterious and terrifically strong boy with no home. A warrior woman from exotic lands. And Aldous Hogarth, fellow family black sheep. It seemed that "haunted by the past" was a unifying theme among them. He could certainly do worse than this rag-tag bunch of misfits and miscreants. "It's quite the beautiful day!" He chirped, looking westward. "I propose that we begin our travels heading for the Zulfiqar mine. It's been around for a little more than a year, but it is being financed directly out of House Kashmira's coffers, and we all know how stingy they are, so it must be worth their while." He chuckled and expected laughter in return. Blank stares. "Uh... House Kashmira is the ruling family of Zulfiqar, the valley just beyond the Verdant Wildwood. If we keep a good pace, we can cross the Wildwood and reach Zulfiqar town in just a couple days. As you can imagine, the trading outpost around the mine has flourished into a small town, where we can pick up supplies and exchange goods, as well as get some rest..." He edged closer to the others now. "... And, well, word is that a huge discovery is about to be made in the Zulfiqar mine. Given that House Kashmira has financed the project directly, it is believed that there are some very valuable Artifacts down there... Scavengers have already begun to gather around, but if we go now, we can beat them to the punch." He then turned to Keyu in particular. "And, this is top-secret classified information, but did you know of Gaston, the legendary chef, the Cuisinier of Kings? Well, he is currently in Zulfiqar as well, preparing a feast for House Kashmira. He makes some of the best food in the world. And with my influence, I am certain that I can get you in on some of that action." Of course that, in reality, he was not certain. He was not certain at all. He raised an eyebrow provocatively at this, now looking at everyone. "How does that sound to you?" Of course, he was hoping that none of his fellow travelers had heard the folk tales and legends about Verdant Wildwood, which they would have to traverse on the way. It is said that many an adventurer disappears within the labyrinthine sea of trees and is never heard of again. ((OOC: Sorry this took so long! Posting should be more consistent on my part from now on. And again, here is some more [music] to set the mood. Adventure!)) Edited by Casiotune, Sep 6 2011, 07:28 PM.

The night whisked by while Silvan blathered endlessly and Keyu had fallen asleep with eyes open. Possibly Exacerbating the whole ordeal. He slowly became concious as the cool breeze swept across the, filling his snout with the scent of wet grass and tree sap. He uncorked his bottle of water and took a vast swig, and despaired to find his bread stash had emptied itself over the night mysteriously. He doubted Water would really sate him very much, but seemed better than nothing... Until Silvan got all up in his face, and regaled him with the tales of the all the feasts that would be prepared by the illustrious and completely unknown to Keyu, Gaston. But Keyu could tell by Silvan's earnest tone, that no one cooked like Gaston He wiped a copius amount of drool from his wide mouth, and his belly rumbled at its emptiness. His eyes even watered somewhat, as he became aware of the enormity of his hunger. Collecting the rest of his things he turned to the west that Silvan had indicated and hopped down from the platform, and began marching forward. He said nothing about, west being the direction of the ocean, and therefore back to Ishtar, because he knew nothing about geography, and he was sure Silvan knew what he was doing, and mostly he was just pleased not to have the sun in his eyes. |

"Pleasant surprise? If you say so. Not a lot of people would look at it that way, you know. Lots of stories." Aldous just shrugged before going on. Better let Silvan speak. Aldous had a lot to tell; given the chance to say it, he knew full well he wouldn't let others get a word in edgewise. "As for your journey idea... that doesn't sound too bad. Sounds like the kinds of quests my family's former customers would spend time getting gear for. Hopefully with better prices. If there's a place we can stay, as needed, all the better." It actually sounded like a bit of fun for him, and not nearly as dangerous as he was probably painting it. Well, not for him, anyway. For the others... good question. Of course, a cave-in or something of that nature would provide as much trouble for him as anyone else in the party, but better not to bring that up. It would probably happen, then, if he mentioned it. "As long as we know we're going the 'right' way... which I guess is anywhere except back there, right? Lead on, Silvan." |

Keyu was by no means slow, and his pace was calmly relentless. But he couldn't help but lag to the back of the , due to having the shortest stride. At the lead Silvan road atop his sulfur stinking lizard-bird and seemed to have declared an unyeilding war against the peace and quiet of the forest. Any Bandits ahead would surely be surprised to see that the group was a fraction of the size it sounded like it was. Behind Silvan, Aldous's long legs kept him in the lead of the pedestrians, and then Fenghu who seemed serenely quiet. Keyu was not perturbed to be last in line, he was shy and awkward at conversation, And being a longer distance away from Silvan's chatter made the walk a more relaxing experience. He eyed the various chirping birds and babbling streams hungrily, but there were no stops to catch anything, though he did manage to snatch handfuls of berries as they went through the woods. A few he stuffed in his satchel, but most had made their way into his mouth, or at least around his mouth, oozing their bright red juice on his thin lips and dribbling down his chin. He coughed and Stammered "Theres some Berries here" to share the juicy bounty but his quiet voice did not seem to carry as well as Silvan's did. He was hesitant to yell though, the canopy of the trees grew thicker and darker as they went through the woods, and he kept having the sensation of not quite being alone. But he couldn't feel any bioelectric fields beyond their own and the foliage, couldn't smell anything besides the fresh loam and mushrooms and greenery (and the berries he just ate)... And hearing-wise... well, Silvan continued to dominate that sense... Edited by Excellent The Resplendent, Sep 30 2011, 07:13 PM.

As Keyu sampled the Wildwood's many delights, Silvan and Aldous trailed behind, having a spirited yet one-sided conversation. Fenghu appeared to keep her distance. "... And now that Zulfiqar has perfected the automatic steam-powered exterior armor, or "TALOS Walkers," as they like to call them, by reverse-engineering that prototype Artifact they dug out a decade ago, some neighboring estates have begun to shake in their boots... TALOS have only been used for mining operations so far, but anyone with two eyes can see that their military potential is considerable. It is only a matter of time before their--admittedly brilliant--engineers put out a combat-ready prototype. Now that the business of Scavenging has become so potentially lucrative as opposed to purely scientific curiosity, we'll probably find many more fresh-faced farm boys fancying themselves adventurers..." A resigned grunt echoed from behind the two, as Silvan's seemingly reluctant wyvern mount walked slowly behind them. It was rather comical to see the bulky monster try to negotiate tight, winding trails squeezed into the sea of trees. In the back of his mind Silvan found it rather strange that the beast had not, by now, shaken off the charm of the panflute, which certainly should have happened at this point. He figured he shouldn't question it, though. As Silvan paused to take in the scenery of the Verdant Wildwood, an eerie silence fell upon the group. Everyone else wasn't sure if it was legitimately strange or simply strange by comparison to the usual background chatter that Silvan provided, but soon they realized that even the birds had quieted down, and all that remained was the rustling of leaves and swaying of branches in the morning breeze. Silvan glanced quickly at his companions. They were now approaching the heart of the Wildwood, where centuries-old trees blocked out sunlight. Silvan looked in every direction and waited for something to happen. It didn't. "... Well," he turned to face the others, "I'm pretty sure that if we keep up this rough pace we can make it to OW WHAT THE HELL" He flinched and his hand rose to touch his face instinctively. Something had just made a fine slit under his ear; he looked at his palm and saw blood. Before he could begin to process this, a ringing cry shot out from somewhere above them. "Ack!" Silvan gingerly jumped backward as another seemingly invisible projectile hit the ground where he was previously standing with a thwack. A wide shadow was cast upon him and he looked up to witness a great bird flying overhead, navigating the branches and canopies with graceful ease. It was as large as a full-grown eagle, a wingspan of approximately nine feet blocking out sunlight from above, soaring above them, disappearing and reappearing as it weaved aerial paths in between trees. Colored a deep blue with vibrant red inner wings, the tips of its wing feathers extended into a curious semi-transparent fringe, noticeable because it refracted light. It let out another cry as it swooped down in an almost straight line towards Fenghu, with Aldous directly behind her. ((OOC: So this is a glassbird, it shoots out transparent, sharp feathers from its wingtips like projectiles. Its talons and beak are a concern as well. It isn't all that fast but maneuvers very well even in constrained environments. Battle! Oh? A BATTLE THEME YOU SAY?)) Edited by Casiotune, Oct 5 2011, 02:00 AM.
