Having recently purchased the new RF-4 kit I was pleasantly surprised, I knew it was based on an old tooling but it had engraved panel lines and no flash. Then I realised that the F-4J boxing had UK markings, £20 on Ebay and I had the kit. I replaced the seats but apart from that its out of the box. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Thank you all for your kind comments. Yes the inner wing portions are a different grey, the tip sections are the same colour as the fuselage. I struggled a bit with the colours for this one as I wanted to keep it acrylic Mr Colour or Tamiya and without mixing. The light aircraft grey and medium sea grey were no problem, Mr colour named shades straight out of the jar, the Barley (Flint) grey doesn't seem to have an off the shelf match so I went for Tamiya XF 24 which was suggested as the closest. The actual shade for Flint grey seems to be quite hard to pin down in any case but I'm not sure I have enough contrast in the colours I used. I think next time I might have to go with Xtracolor enamels and see if that looks better. |

You can`t beat a toom and a very well done one at that. With regards to the colours, I have a certain amount of knowledge on this as you may well expect and I`d recommend Light Ghost Grey toned down with a layer of matt coat. This way the paint scheme looks lighter in bright weather and darker in cloudy weather in the same way the real thing did. This is probably why so many people have different views of the scheme depending on what kind of day they saw a F-4J(uk). Camera settings also no doubt played a part in some cases. The following picture shows a very well worn `J` and highlights the `light` tone of the original paint work..... ![]() Two pictures of my F-4J from a month or so ago using Light Ghost Grey and the different effect you get depending on the light..... ![]() ![]() Not a great example but hopefully it points you in a better direction. Nice lookin' JUK! Great shot of A to A refueling too. Love that pilots helmet. Really do miss the F-4. I'm sure you guys do to. I know the Lightning was big and loud but there's something about a big old dirty J-79 powered aircraft that was really fun to watch. When I first moved to the Reno area I use to see RF-4E's from the Guard all the time. When the announcement was made that the Guard was getting G's I was really jazzed. Then the ax fell and we wound up with C-130's. I know the Pilots from the Guard liked the change as far as flying hours but the weeks away from home and the constant deployments have been a real drag for the guys. Take it easy. |
