I built both of these for an Edgar Brooks Spitifre Memorial build over on Aeroscale. And why the Mk.XVI? Well its my favorite marque of the breed.

This is Supermarine Spitfire LF Mk.XVI SL721. And personal aircraft of AVM James Milne Robb, who was head of Fighter Command at the time. And who had the gun bays modified to stow luggage. The AVM specified the special Light Blue colour to make it more conspicuous. AVM Robb took delivery of SL721 in February, 1948, and used it to tour Fighter Command bases around the UK. SL721 was based at RAF Hendon and RAF Northolt until it was involved in a serious landing accident when SL721 was being flown by AVM John Boothman. While SL721 was being repaired, Robb was promoted to Commander-in- Chief, Airforces Europe and the three star rank pennant on the fuselage was upgraded to five stars. In 1951, when Robb was due to retire, he flew Spitfire SL721 one last time - to RAF Little Rissington, home of the Royal Air Force’s Central Flying School (and later, the Red Arrows). SL721 still currently flies in Canada. The model is the 1/48 Eduard kit of the Mk.XVI.

My last airplane model for the year. Now back to my beloved military vehicles (my first love) So this model depicts a Spitfire LF Mk.XVI of the Central Gunnery School at RAF Leconfield in Yorkshire in 1946-1947 where the Spitfire's along with Mosquito's were used in the Fighter affiliation role at the School. The Central Gunnery School later became the Fighter Weapons School.

I used a Barracuda Details cockpit and wheels and Lifelike Decals on the latest build.

Humbrol 145 for the Blue as its the right shade unlike Eduard who tell you to use PRU Blue.

I read somewhere that this aircraft got a re-paint part way through its service, it went from light blue to PRU or the other way round, I can't remember which now.

Sorry guys I had a brain fart. The color I used on the Baby Blue Mk.XVI was actually Humbrol 47.

Lovely Spitfires, Daz.

The scheme on the Central Gunnery School aircraft is an option in the Heller 1/72 Mk.XVI kit

Thanks Gaz. That was the reason I chose that option for one of my Mk.XVI's nostalgia :)

I may yet do the same for the same reason! I need a 1/48 Mk.XVI to finish off my "Spitfire Story" collection.
It's mostly 1/72, but with "Landmarks"- Mk.1 (the 1st), Mk.XII (1st Griffon-engined), Mk.XVI (last Merlin-engined)
and the Seafire 47 (last of the line)- in 1/48.
