H.M.S.Ariadne 1:700 Scale 05134 Make: Revell Scale: 1:700 Kit Number: 05134 Model: HMS Ariadne Markings: Royal Navy 1943 Paint Method: Brush Paints Used: Revell Aquacolor Glues: Tamiya Extra Thin. Decals Fixing: Humbrol Decalfix Weathering: None Varnishes: None Aftermaket: None Scratch Build: None Tools: Scalpel; Sanding Sticks: Paintbrush, Pin Vice & Tweezers. Let me start by saying I am not really a small scale ship builder due to sausage fingers syndrome, However I shall be attempting this kit OOB using the paints suggested in the instructions. An in box review is Here Ok, if you have read the in box review you may recall me mentioning it looked like the hull sides were warped, well they were, they actually touched in the middle before they touched at the end. To rectify I first cemented the bow and stern together and let the glue cure, then put the deck in place using tweezers to open a gap, then ran some Tamiya Extra Tin (TET) around the inside. Then did put the bottom plate in and ran TET around the join. et voilà. ![]() Then onto some of the guns and funnels. ![]() Before moving onto the some superstructure. ![]() It’s about at this time I reckoned it might be better to paint the deck and superstructures separately before assembly. The instructions call for one paint to be mixed, that being 331 and 5 (purple red and white). In order that I kept the same shade throughout I mixed some in an empty cleaned out Aquacolor pot. To say the shade looked pink would be an understatement, fully expecting Cary Grant and Tony Curtiss to take command. ![]() After painting and construction you get something like this. ![]() ![]() And so I continued in a similar vein with the rest of the ship. Problems I encountered other than big fingers and little parts were: The hole in the bottom of the structure you construct in stage 12 required widening a little to fit onto the raised section of the deck. There are 4 thingamebobs to be fitted to the bridger are (parts 33 in stage 15) two on the sides and two on the deck. There was insufficient space on the deck to fit them so I left them off. I could not get the white ensign to line up correctly on the rear flagpole. The only other problem I had was miss-reading the paint guide and switching the colours in error. So here’s the finished article, I used a cocktail stick dipped in black to pick out the portholes. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() So there it is, it took a little longer than I anticipated to make and my lack of experience with this genre and scale most likely shows, still an enjoyable build, Kudos to people who can make these kits with photoetch etc. Edited by Johni044, Feb 26 2018, 12:02 PM.

They did, but John's interpretation might be a bit 'shocking'! ![]() Mountbatten pink, light RN18 |

Mountbatten Pink eh, that would have been nice to know rather than 90% white and 10% purple red. It looks more like 50% purple red, 20% white and 30% grey. I can feel a repaint in order. |
