Hold fire on applying the decals on this one mate.

I`m looking into it, but the serial and markings on the decal sheet your using may be wrong.

This Mustang was donated by the local USAAF airbase so I'm quite surprised it was painted in RAF camo....

It`s one of those no one really knows schemes.

Ok.., according to 'Beyond the Dams to the Tirpitz' by Alan Cooper, it states one Mustang. HB937 (not HB837 as on the sheet) code letter, N. Sailed on the SS Brady to the UK 18/5/44. Delivered to 617 sqn 25/6/44. transfered to 541 sqn 14/5/45. scrapped 14/3/1947.

However as Paul pointed out, the unofficial story goes that instead of going through the proper channels, he approached a friend in the USAF and asked if he could "borrow" an aircraft, which they did.

So the way I see it is,

a) did the aircraft have the `N` code?
b) which serial is correct?

Answers on a postcard to......

I'm afraid this is an old chestnut and I've seen other forums debating this issuLockheedistle

I've read that HB825 and HB837 were part of a batch (HB822 to HB871) for delivery to the RAF.

On the 20th June the Air Ministry signalled the Ministry of Aircraft Production requesting the allocation of two Mustangs III's.

Prior to this (if not already provisioned) the aircraft would have been sent to Lockheed Aircraft in the UK where it would have received RAF markings and a Malcolm hood.

On the 24th June Cheshire decided that the time had come to use tha Mustang, without it would appear a practice flight (hevwas tiedup with operations).

On the 25th June, Cheshire taxied HB837and Woodall's Intelligence Officer Arthur Pollen watched Cheshire take to the skies. He'd turned up as he was worried that the CO hadn't flown this type of aircraft before.

The photo Mark has is a still from film that is the only photographic record of a 617 pony.
The N code was noted in 617's ORB.

All this info has been taken from Aviation Classics "Cadillac of the Sky" so make of
it what you will.

Nothing like throwing a spanner in the works......

General concensus from `The 7` seems to be that the Mustang with the `N` prefix was the first one while the second bore no markings....?? .... but who knows?

How are you going to represent the flares? Personally I have no idea what they look like and assume they were fitted to the bomb racks.
