Revell U-Boot: Type XXI U2540; Or how I returned to scale modelling.

Hello everyone,

Well, after a long modelling absence, I recently decided to dig out some old stock and give it a go again. I chose to do my Type XXI and I've taken a few sparse pictures along the way. Pics aren't great, as a pre-warning as lighting is awful and the sub is currently sprayed black!

When I get chance, I'll take some proper daylight shots, especially when I actually start painting it.

Okay, first off, box art!

I actually sprayed these up on the sprues yonks ago, so I don't have any pictures of the sprues as they arrive from the box, the following series of shots are taken off my camera phone, so apologies for that.
The hull is trimmed up and shaped a little. I mocked it together with the wife's bobbles (only thing to hand at the time!) and some cheap clamps. It has various little bits assembled and fixed in place on the hull; exhaust ports (not accurate as far as I know but I installed them anyway), rudder (moves), stern hydroplanes -with their curiously separate tips- and props (fixed). The bow dive planes I assembled and are kind of neat. I regret not taking a shot of them but they operate in tandem. They assemble on a plate and extend via a central slide to which they attach. Very fiddly and only held in place by the deck (hence why I glued the hull mock up ASAP and got no picture).

I later reinforced and fiddled the mock up to where i wanted it with masking tape and elastic bands and glued it in situ. Next shots are taken with a proper camera but again, poor lighting.
I assembled the body of the conning tower and the AA guns (which elevate and traverse), did a bit more flatting and shaping of the hull to the deck (not much of that) and a bit more gluing on the hull (still needs a bit of work on the deck at the stern). Conning tower is not fixed yet, just mocked up.

Anyway, sorry again for pic quality but I should be able to improve that going onwards. Any tips are welcome and any shots you may want I'll try to accommodate.

Haha, he would do that if i gave him a chance.
I've had a bit of a busy Christmas but next few days I'll jump straight back on this project.
One of the things I've been working on is a room to work in.

Slow progress on this and no new pics yet. I realised i didn't have the paints I wanted but i'm sorting that now. Painting the periscopes at the moment and the conning tower accoutrements, which is slow going for me. I'll get some progress shots up as soon as there is anything to see.
