Hey everyone,

I thought I would kick start my time on the forum with a modelling log and what better place to start than with some armour. For Christmas this year, Father Christmas treated me to two kits: the Academy Sturmgeshutz Sdfkz. 167 (Stug IV) and Italeri's M4-A1 Sherman.

First up...

I'm currently midway through assembly.
The Academy kit gives the more experienced/technically-minded modeller the opportunity to motorise the kit. Indeed I noticed a similar set up with my Panzer IV. What has really impressed me with the kit is that moulding lines and flash are almost none existant and the ejection depressions are, for the most part, in places where they will not be seen meaning that you can pretty much snip it off the sprue and put it together. I'm a bit of pedant, some might say perfectionist, so I like to just run a blade over where the mould lines would be just to doubly make sure. Only real criticism is that the instructions are a little vague at times but, that said, the kit is simple enough to figure it out

Once the main parts of the kit are put together, I shall take a picture before moving on to phase two - zimmerit! I've always wanted to try it and I've recently seen some images whilst doing my homework, of Stug IVs with Zimmerit applied.

Secondly, I'll be working on this...

I've not started the assembly yet, but the the kit looks pretty nice and from what I have seen, the moulding looks pretty clean and tidy. The reality is that this won't be seeing much action until the Stug is out of the way as there are some techniques I want to try and I need to research them further. I'd like to texture the exterior surfaces of the kit to resemble the fabrication process - casting the metal rather than welding plates together. I have been looking at a guide by Mig Jiminez, but unfortunately the texturing guide is photographs only, so any experience/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Finally I may just post some pictures of a Pz IV I am painting for my brother. It will be based on a screenshot from World of Tanks...

I know in shot is an M4, however the basing/composition he wants a bit like the screenshot. It's also going to be painted in the standard German grey.

So that about sums up the few bits and pieces I have going on at present. 3 kits, 2 currently underway, in addition to some miniature commissions. I may post the odd picture of those for those interested in a different section of the forum.

Happy modelling folks,

u_m

Wow, we have a man of many talents, not only does he build targets but also paints pictures of them. That is a lovely painting how big is it?

Hehe, I can see how the last bit is confusing.

I meant that my brother has assembled a Panzer IV over Christmas and has asked me to paint it and base it in a similar fashion to the screenshot he gave me from World of Tanks. Basically I'm going to use an old picture frame and some cobble sets to create the base and then I'll add a wall and some foliage to it too.

Truth be told, I'm not much of an artist. I dabbled in water colour but that is where it stopped! I'll post pictures of them all as and when I can, probably starting with the Stug or Panzer first

I understand now, mind you being an olde farte it doesn't take much to confuse me. Keep up the good work.

Hey folks,

Well after partially assembling my Stug, I have started applying the Zimmerit coat. For those of you that have experience of applying Zimmerit, you will understand the pain I went through yesterday. Those of you who havent, make sure you are a sane and normal person before you begin, because it will take every ounce of patience and will, and a large dose of coffee to see it through.

I've used kneadatite, or 'green stuff', an epoxy based putty. I tried a few other things such as bathroom filler, Tamiya putty, and a few different grades of milliput, but nothing gave me the control that the kneadatite did. I'm pretty pleased with the result, however I have just finished my putty so I'll have to wait till the next batch arrives before I continue.

It looks really good, so far, got the effect just about right. Be a bit heavy when it's all done.

Do you mean a little too thick? That's my biggest concern really.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I'm gonna put in hold while I await delivery of 36 inches of Kneadatite. I don't think I'll run out in a hurry, this thing only used 2 and half! I suggest having a go at some armour - great fun, especially when it comes to dioramas!
