Using two of the recently released Airfix 1/72 scale EE Lightning F.2A kits, these builds will be pretty much OOB, but mounted as an in-flight formation pair.

My initial thoughts are that the kit is well produced and dry fitting indicates there should be few problems, even for a ham-fisted builder like me.

Sub-assemblies started

Although there are parts for one aircraft shown, I'm building both kits simultaneously up to the painting and decal stage. I'm also waiting for the acrylic rod to arrive so that the jets can be mounted to a stand via the lower jet pipes.

Update 1

I'm happy to report that the quality of the plastic and fit of the parts is well up to what I would hope for in any kit!

The fuselage internals have been fitted
Posted Image

The two fuselages have been buttoned up
Posted Image

4 grammes of nose weight is recommended for a jet on its wheels, but there is plenty of space to fit your medium of choice. I'm not using the undercarriage, so can't comment on its strength with extra weight added.

The one note of caution I would sound so far is that the fuselage sections forward of the cockpit seem a bit tight - dry fitting is highly recommended before adhesive is applied!
(You can guess what I did)

Update 2

The assembly is largely completed, and the fuselages have been sprayed

The silver jet is masked and ready to receive a blue tail and spine

The build is very straightforward as there are not too many ways a Lightning can go together. I can't vouch for the accuracy of the kit as I don't get too bothered about such things, but it's very enjoyable to put together.

If they did, they'd probably be the best F.2's in the world.... :rolf

A man after my own heart.

Really enjoying this WIP mate as, like so many I think, I have one of these to build.

Builder of aircraft, any scale from 1:1 to 1:144!
They look good so far. I too may have to weaken and get one of these! Think I can hide one on the shelf between the F.2A, T.5, F.55 and 3 F.6's already inhabiting it without it being noticed...?!

Update 3

The models have had a coat of Klear in preparation for the decals, and I started to apply these last night.
Posted Image

The decals appear very good to my eye and go on well. One thing I've noticed though is that they don't easily conform to panel lines, even with MicroSol applied. It's not a problem for me in 1/72, so not to worry. For my money, it's when the markings go on that a model takes on a "personality" of its own so I enjoy this part.

For the first time, I'm doing all of the painting and decalling without wings attached. The fit of the wings feels as if I'll get away with it but time will tell. In a couple of days, I'll start to work on the display base and acrylic rod to mount the jets.

Top Tip for future Airfix Lightning assemblers: Paint the intake trunking BEFORE assembling the fuselage!!! :dead
