Update 4

The wings are now complete as far as markings and painting are concerned. The dark wing will have a refuelling probe fitted - not sure about the silver jet just yet...

The nose sections are mostly marked - they start to look like proper aircraft now

I have learned that the decals are excellent. My application technique was at fault, probably because I haven't built anything for a few months, but giving them plenty of time in water and using a LOT of water during application sorted out my problem. I have also given them a top coat of MicroSol.

Next up will be completing the decals. The under fuselage area catches quite a few but once done, my efforts move to the acrylic rod and mounting the models. This dual build is proving very enjoyable and I can see more 1/72 Lightnings alongside these on a shelf in the future.

Update 5

The "wing experiment" seems to be working so far...
I've never tried to build a model in modules before and with a jet that has smooth lines, I wasn't sure if this was a good idea. I completed the fuselage and the two wings separately, painting and decalling them without joining. I dry-fitted the wings before painting and they seemed to be a good accurate fit.

Having completed the decals for both jets this morning, I joined the starboard wings and all looks OK from my point of view. The port wings go on later today and then its all downhill.

They look fantastic with the decals on.
Did the modular building approach make it any easier?

It's not for everyone, but in this case, the wings have gone onto the fuselage with sufficient accuracy to make me very happy with the result. The fuselage painting and decalling was MUCH easier without the wings being in the way and saved much frustration.

Update 6
A good days modelling!

With the starboard wings fitted it was time to put the port ones in place. I thought it might be interesting to see what it might look like with the wrong wing in place - odd to say the least.

Normal service was soon restored and the wings were on the right models.

Time for the display base. Going for complete overkill, this block of wood is 2"x3"x12". Two 8mm holes were drilled into the base to accept acrylic rod. 8mm is the internal diameter of the jet pipes. Rod lengths were cut and the ends smoothed.
Posted Image

Using a candle, gentle heat was applied to the rod and my fingers until a 90 degree bend was achieved.
Posted Image

In this view, the rods are not fully home and the models are not in their final positions, but you get the idea of what I'll be doing.

The base was covered with a section of map I have had lying around for the past twenty years. Although the models depict jets from RAF Guetersloh, to reflect the CockpiFest theme, I've used a section showing Lincolnshire on the right side. High ground to the left, flat dullness to the right - just saying!

I'll have a break from these for a couple of days before the missiles, nose, pitot tubes and the back ends are sorted out. The end is in sight!

For my money, it's when the markings go on that a model takes on a "personality" of its own so I enjoy this part.

I have to agree. :cool
