AIRFIX 1/48 Supermarine Seafire F.XVII

THE BOX
Well this is a lift lid box rather than an end opening so you get the nice tray, the box is the new style red boxing and shows the 3 decal options. The box states it is a skill 3 kit, and has 2 flying hours

The SPRUES
There are 2 light grey sprues and one clear sprue. The clear sprue’s cleanly moulded and the transparencies appear nice and thin. The grey sprue’s, show crisp panel lines, not the deep trenches and ravines that we have seen recently, there is options for posing the kit, in flying, landing and wings folded position. There is the inclusion of a pilot that actually looks form the correct era.

THE DECALS AND THE INSTRUCTIONS

There are 3 options in the kit, these are
No 800 Naval Air Squadron, HMS Triumph & Hal Far, Malta. 1947
No 714 Naval Air Squadron, Operational Flying Training Unit, Air Warfare School, St Merryn, Cornwall, England 1947
No 1832 Naval Air Squadron, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, Southern Air Division, Royal Naval Air Squadron Culham, Oxfordshire, England 1950

The decals are thin and crisp, in perfect register and were printed by cartograph in Italy, the instructions are in the usual booklet form and give out paint references in Humbrol colours, each step is clear and concise, at the end of the booklet, is 3 paint guides in colour that show paint options and decal placement

IN CONCLUSION
Well what can I say this is a major step forward for Airfix, the panel lines are perfect for this scale and which the choice of this kit, Airfix have filled a long awaited gap in the market. I can’t wait to start building this kit. Well done Airfix

Some of those sprues look dangerously similar to those of the Airfix Club Spitfire kit.

{Gets post traumatic kit flashback}

It's not in the least like the Mk IX kits, if anything you can see commonality with the Mk XII, but any resemblance to the Mk IX's is down to the fact that it is a Spitfire and you would expect them er, to look similar.

There's a build thread here and the result here. I've seen the kit close up on the sprue and assembled (Karl Robinson's review build for SAM) and it is quite superb. I'd recommend it without reservation - must get one for the stash.

Well thank the maker for that.

After the disappointment of the MkIX, I was slightly hesistant about the other 1/48s.

I think you can consign 'old' Airfix to history. ;)

You will still see some of the duff stuff like the Mk IX for sale, because a company like Airfix cannot afford not to be utilising all its assets in order to maintain turnover, but the new management has a different attitude to the old regime with regard to new products.

That looks like a nice kit. It can only be an improvement over past Airfix Spits, I may well add one to the stash....
