Hopefully these will be my somewhat ambitious efforts for this. The reason and the story Years ago when Classic airframes came out with their P-51H I got one in hopes of building one from the New Hampshire ANG, my home state. It ended up being missing parts for the cockpit. I was eventually able to find a second kit, but being frugal, I will scratch build the missing pieces so now I have two kits.......Anyway, SAC had a couple of squadrons (I will dig out the relevant details...it is late now), one aircraft "Louisiana Heat Wave" was flown by a WWII Ace who flew a P-51D in with this name in the war, his post war P-51H carried the same name AND his WW II scoreboard with which I though was kind of cool, he was stationed at Grenier Field in Manchester, New Hampshire until the squadron was deployed to Alaska during the Berlin Crisis. I have a local newspaper clipping that has a photo of the nose of the aircraft. Anyway, Superscale and Aeromaster both had sheets with these markings for the WW II P-51D, I ended up being able to get a set of each markings from these sheets.......I also have a Tamyia P-51D I got in a trade long ago, not really my favorite thing, but I have been holding onto it......So two P-51's, two sets of markings..so I will build the WW II "D" version, and the post war P-51H. Anyway, the other P-51H kit in N.H. ANG markings....One of the N.H. ANG aircraft had a sharks mouth, the ONLY markings for this aircraft at all were in the old Collectaire P-51H kit which is long gone, but there were extra decals available, and last week I sent off for and received the decal sheet that has these markings, they look very nice and and are printed by Scale Master. So, after probably about 10 -12 years of collecting (sometimes by choice, sometimes by chance) kits and decals I am set to start this project. Almost, I have to dig the Tamyia kit out of storage, and will probably not be able to put up pics. or start until this weekend. Ernie |
