The source is tomorrow's Daily Mirror. So take with a huge chunk of salt.

Mate the Governments have been trying to axe the Reds for years. Can you imagine the outcry if they did?

I'm not a lover of display teams but this would be a very sad day for the country.

It's obviously correct that these stories and rumours have been a regular feature of the UK aviation scene for many years now, but sadly, I can imagine the day arriving when it becomes fact rather than fiction.

With the budget constraints imposed on and by the MOD, general cost savings will have to be made in ways that would not have been envisaged years ago. I don't know how much the Reds cost to operate annually, but it must be very tempting to look at what, if any, savings could be made by either disbanding the squadron, using fewer aircraft or flying a different aircraft type such as the Tucano. What is harder to quantify is their true value in terms of recruiting for HM Forces, their value to UK industry & business and the overall publicity for the United Kingdom.

If the Reds are looked at with a view to disbanding or change, I would also imagine that someone has the back of an envelope facing them on an MOD desk with the BBMF written on it for a similar review of justification.

I would rather see them kept on and doing the job they are good at but ultimately in this day and age money may well be the deciding factor, whether that decision comes sooner or later.

Slow news day at the Mirrors aviation news desk I`m afraid.

Obviously not enough air disasters happening around the world to keep them busy...

The goverment had already reacted to this story and denied any intention to disband them. Pretty sure this story always emerges when a round of defense cuts is announced.

Storm in a teacup springs to mind.

I remember when the paper reported a rusian bomber over the UK. They said that they could bomb us at any point Blah Blah Blah.

I don't read news papers as they are so full of rubbish, I had the above pointed out to me by a work colleague who wanted my advice as he was scared we were being bombed by russians.

I have no interest in the Reds personally but I know a lot of people do so I wouldn't want them to go.

Here's the Mirror report in question. As expected, it's very much a "anonymous sources say" type story.

I can't see the Reds being disbanded for the forseeable future, or Scampton being shut either.
They have tried several times to move them from here and each time it has lead to the same result.....They have to use this airspace to practice as any other "home" airfield is busy. Therefore they need ATC, crash and fire crews, medical staff, etc....Factor into that the fuel used in transition to Scampton and it completely negates any cost savings made!

Article in my paper the other day stated that Cameron was in his plane while flitting around Africa and chatting to some on board reporters. While talking about Defence cuts he said that you reporters will print anything, next you will be saying that the Red Arrows are being disbanded, lo and behold said headline appeared next day.
