Phantom wings.

I've only just really got around to looking at the 1\48 Hasegawa Phantom (F-4J in this case) and I notice that in several issues there's a prominent 'blip' on the upper surface, at mid-inner plane around the size of a grain of rice.

For the life of me I can't ever remember seeing that on a Phantom, but that's more likely from failure to look properly.

Anyone fill me in on this?

Is it on both wings or just one? It looks to me like what you are describing is the MLG trunnion cover. The cover was added when the Navy strengthened the MLG and went to the wider tires. The increased size of the MLG meant that they had to cut a hole in the wing to accomidate the new gear. The cover also serves as a blow out panel if the tire explodes while retracted. Hope this helps.
