Recently released in time for the 70th Anniversary of Operation Chastise. Is this new tool Avro Lancaster from home grown manufacturer Airfix.

The proper designation of the Aircraft was Lancaster 464 (Provisioning).

The box art is a dramatic rendering of a breached dam, with the Lanc flying off the box.

Inside the box are 6 sprues in medium grey plastic, and one in clear for the various windows, lights and such.

The first sprue contains one side of the fuselage, top of the wing halves, spar, tailplane, seperate elevator and one of the tailfins with a seperate rudder, florr/bomb bay roof and one of the main wheels.

Here are close ups of some of the detail.

The kit also features posable flaps.

The second sprue is a mirror of the first containing the other fuselage side, spar, tailplane etc.

The third sprue contains the engine nacelles, props, exhausts and such.

Posted Image

The fourth sprue contains the interior of the wheel wells, cockpit, turrets and such.

Posted Image

The fifth sprue contains some parts that are not applicable to this kit. Such as bomb bay doors, mid upper turret fairing and such.

Posted Image

The sixth sprue contains all the parts needed for a Chastise aircraft. Which also includes a trolley for the Upkeep mine.

The seventh and last sprue is for the clear parts.

Next we come to the instruction booklet, which is to Airfix's current standard. We also get a full colour, two-sided drawing for the marking options. And these are for:

Lancaster 464 (Provisioning) ED825/G as flown by Flt Lt. J.C. McCarthy RCAF DFC (although he was actually American).

Lancaster 464 (Provisioning) ED927, as flown by Flt.Lt R.N.G.Barlow RAAF DFC. He and his crew failed to return from the operation.

An excellent kit of the RAF's greatest four-engined Bomber.

A nice review Daz, it is certainly a step up from the original and I could be tempted but it doesn't really float my boat at the moment.

Thanks Daz.

I have to admit to having been tempted already and adding this kit as one of the very few 1/72 kits I possess.

The box artwork is interesting, rather than the more traditional representations of the raid this appears to show McCarthys attack on the Sorpe. This was an earth dam attacked by flying along it's length and dropping a non spinning bomb. McCarthys bomb exploded doing some minor damage.

This picture is available from the Airfix website as a download for your computer screen background.

Glad you like the review guys. It does look to be a great kit. Sadly I won't be doing a WIP for a while, as I can't get motivated on anything.

I could be tempted by this kit, I usually steer away from the 72 scale range, but with it being the 70th anniversary, & the fact that I only live 5 miles from Scampton, I really ought too.

This review has also inspired me to add one to the pile. Many thanks Daz. :cool :lanc

I would love to do all 19 Lancs that took part in the operation. It's just the expense and room.

I have just received this kit and WOW, what a kit.

I don't normally build 1/72, but I'm building this for a friends son.

Calling Daz, the Lancmeister,

Looking for info on the fuselage windows of these machines. I have seen photo's of Gibson and his crew boarding his a/c, and the windows are clearly visible. Did any Chastise mission a/c have the windows painted out.

Both paint charts in the kit show windows un painted AJ-T & AJ-E.

The 60th Anniversary set from Airfix has the windows moulded on the fuselage but no clear bits, indicating they were painted out.

Confused.com !!!

BTW there are a couple of gotcha's in the instructions.

You need to open a slot in port fuselage nose for forward spot lamp. Not shown on instruction sheet.

Tailplane halves are numbered incorrectly, B8 - B9 & A6 - A7, should be A6 - B8 & A7 - B9.

Box on part D21 is H2S receiver, remove for Op Chastise. Also bomb sight C32.

Hi all the Chastise Lancs had the fuselage windows. And there are gotcha's in the instructions I forgot to mention (brain fart) lol. And be careful how you line the interior up , as it throws out the entire kit. When I build another I'll watch out for that. But, that being said, this is the best 1/72 Lanc out there.
