It could be the clutch. When it's in gear does it make any noises, rumbling etc? And does it drive ok? If there's no noise from the box when it's on the move its most likely the clutch. |

Does it go in when the engine is off? This does sound like the clutch is shot as the only real reason it wouldn't go into first or second is if either the Teeth are buggered or the pre selector is shot (this moves the cogs before they fully engage). If that is the case then it will need a box re build. Does the clutch pedal feel any different? best case is the cable needs adjusting, worse case is the clutch itself is shot. |

I'm not knowledgeable enough to offer advice, but this web site has a good reputation for it; http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/ (Other web sites are available!) |

It could also be the gear selector rods on the gear stick. There are bushes on the joints and they could be worn |

My friend had a problem many years back on his Corsa he couldnt get it into 1st or 2nd without brute force, a mechanic friend of his raised the setting on the clutch cable and it worked fine. Apparently you have upto 5 adjustments available on the clutch cable before the clutch needs changing Pete |
