Been waiting 2 weeks for my airbrush nozzles to arrive. I decided to get nozzles rather than a nother airbrush as thats the bit I keep breaking. So..I order 5 0.5mm nozzles off E-bay. The have to come from Bangkok or some such place, so I accept I have to wait, free postage and all that...

So, they arrive today...and they appear to be 0.3mm nozzles, which I can't get any paint thru, no matter how thin I make it. Straight onto E-bay to complain, but that doesn't help me....At best I'll have to wait 2 more weeks and that only gives me a couple of weeks to finish everything off for Cockpit fest......

It's a cheapy E-bay one, like you get with the compressor kit. Has HD-470 etched on the side.

I've got my bottom fed one going at the moment, it'll have to do, but I get as much paint on me and the desk that I do on the model, lol

The needle might be the problem if it's not matched with the nozzle, you should be able to spray OK with a 0.3 nozzle with the correct needle.

I have a 0.3 needle and nozzle set up in another a/b, but I can't get on with it. Constantly clogs up after a few seconds of spraying, if it sprays at all. The only way to get paint thru it is to have it the consistancy of water, which means it doesn't actually colour anything....

TBH, looking at my 0.3 and my new nozzles, they may be smaller than that.....

Got a reply back from the seller. They reckon it's a manufacturing defect, so they are refunding me my money. So I have some undersize nozzles now. Might see if I can drill them out myself......

Looking on RDG tools page on E-bay (who I bought the original kit off) they do a nozzle and needle for a fiver....

I'm guessing you're using acrylic? Airbrushes were originally designed for use with inks, that have much finer pigment than the media we usually use for models. Acrylic paint and to a lesser extent enamels have pigment that is coarse in comparison with ink, that's why we need to use high thinner to paint ratios and why they are likely to cause tip clogging. If you're using ultra thin paint you have to be patient and build up the density gradually with multiple passes. If you want to use thicker paint, then as Mark suggests, crank up the pressure, although there is a point where increasing pressure will cause the paint to set faster and increase the likelihood of tip clogging. I regularly use Tamiya paint straight out of the jar, no thinners and through a 0.3 tip, just set the compressor at 20-25 psi. Masking is a must, there's lots of overspray. For fine line, free hand work, paint must be very thin and use the least possible pressure to get it to flow.
