As Im still excited about finally getting my dream camera (all be it second hand) and inspired by one of the responses to my post I thought I would ask.

For those who are spotters of any description or keen photographers

Why either Nikon or canon?

All Im after is why you like your camera and not 'canon/nikon are crap'.

What was it that made you chose your weapon of choice to take those sort after pics?

Those who have neither then please just post why you like your camera you use as I don't like leaving people out.

I started of with a hand me down Practika many moons ago and when my Nanna died she left me quite a bit of cash. So I treated myself to an canon EOS 100 film camera and a 75-300mm lens plus case, tripod etc etc.

I had never even seen a nikon let alone used one, I just liked the look of the Canon.

When it all went digital I prayed the new EOS cameras would take my film camera lenses. Low and behold I found out the did so I bought an EOS 30D second hand.

I then came into a bit of cash from British gas so I treated myself to a brand new EOS 500D. Im not as impressed with it as the 30D but when the 30D was out of action it did the job. All the functions were ok it just didnt feel as good'er quality.

So now I am getting an EOS 1D IIN and I coudnt be happier.

So which is your preference and why?

I've been a Canon fan since I worked in Dixons, way back when I first left school. It took a long time but I finally got one. Now I've got both my parents ones so I have 3 35mm bodies and my digital one.

Never liked Nikon so much, they never seemed to feel right to me. The Canon always felt 'right' in my hand.

I also started with a Praktica kit before moving on to the Canon EOS10. This was back in 1991/92 when it won camera of the year - the reason I wanted it. (Also got a good deal on my trade in, as the shop assistant was a friend of my wife, then girlfriend.) :D

After selling it a few years ago as I no longer used it, I bought a cheap second hand compact digital and was hooked again!

After a bit of saving I went for a Nikon dslr this time (D50), simply because I liked the look of it over comparatively priced Canon's. I've since stuck with Nikons, (D80 and now D7000)and I'm more than happy with the results.
After all, its really a matter of 'you pays your money, you makes your choice'

In the 70's it was the Pentax K1000 and then the Pentax MX that really got me hooked on taking photos.

Into the 80's and I wanted a Canon A1. I accumulated a good set of lenses and the motor drive on the A1 and it gave many years of good and enjoyable service. Then my eyesight started to go a little and it was time to move into autofocus for the ease of use.

The Sigma D7000 was OK for a while but then I went the way I'd always wanted to go (since using an Army Nikon F3 in the 70's) and bought into Nikon, where I've been since.

The D80 is just right for what I want but I'm starting to think of the future now. I'll be staying with Nikon for the compatibility of lenses and PC software if I replace the D80. One reason it has become Nikon for me is the huge range of lenses - although not all features would work on the D80, just about every Nikon/Nikkor lens made since the early 30's would fit and be usable.

I have nothing against Canon or any other main brand, but now I've got used to the operation of the kit and the editing software, I'll stick to my current brand. I still miss the A1 though!

I started of on Olympus, and still have it (it was my late Dad's). But my current day-to-day Camera is a Nikon D80, which I purchased 5 years ago when I was made redundant. It feels right to me, and the compatibility of lenses and editing software also works for me. So it's Nikon all the way for me.

My first DSLR was a second-hand Canon 300D. I bought it as, at the time, it was recommended as a relatively inexpensive camera for astrophotography.

With that came Canon format lenses and accessories, plus all the knowledge and experience you gain along the way.

And so, when it's come time to upgrade, I've stuck with Canon.

However, I'm using medium-format film cameras again quite a bit recently.

I started out with a Pentax ME Super back in the 80's before getting digital point and shoots. Just got back into photography with a Canon 1100d. Looked at both Canon and Nikon but preferred the Canon cos it just felt better!

back in the old 35mm days i had a Pentax.....cant remember which one, me or mg i think, and a few diffeent lens

back then i was into motorsport and car shows, it seemed perfectly adequate for my needs

my first digital camera was a Fuji bridge camera which i bought about 8 or 9 years ago..............replaced it about 9 motnhs ago with another Fuji bridge camera as i could no longer get xd cards at sensible prices even on ebay...still got it as a back up

these days i dont need a fancy dslr, i dont go to shows/races any more, in fact its main use is taking pics of models in various stages of construction
