Starfix Fouga Magister; Unjustified Ancient of Mu-Mu

Had to happen one day. Ex-Heller 1:100'ish Magister with high-quality* decals for an Israeli airframe. Already had a bit of a disaster with the kit - the rubber phial of glue has solidified so I'm not really sure how to proceed. However, there's a helpful Starfix complaints slip still in the box so I'll send that off and see what I get in return.

Watch this space...

*(Not really)

Well, I sent off the complaints slip with regard to the glue, but so far I've heard nothing back even though I put it into the post at about half-past ten.

So much for the famous Starfix 'Customer Service' then.

I tried to see if Tamiya liquid cement worked. Luckily it did.

Over the decades, the parts would appear to have learned their own rudimentary language and in discussions they have resolved to refuse to fit together. The parts seem adapted to live apart, however, I introduced them to Mr. Brute Force and they are temporarily forming an assembly.

To be fair, if you look at the first photo, not even the box fitted together properly, so the plastic parts hardly had the best start in life.

The reader will want to know how big the finished model is and for that I've added a section of sprue into the picture to give scale.

Casting about for after-market items for this model, I was astonished to find nothing whatsoever. Nothing from Eduard nor Verlinden, and nothing at all from Hannants. Not even PE elevator locks. No decals.

This kit has been available for decades so it's not as if they've had too little time to sort it out. So frankly what Verlinden and Eduard are playing at over this kit I don't know. But I'm not impressed with their negligence on the subject.

Since the underside photo was taken, I fully detailed the undercarriage bays with structural detail, working hydraulics, authentic undercarriage with functioning oleos and the associated openings through which both engines can be viewed. Engines are depicted with the correct number of turbine faces. Nose bay was also treated thus and I painted the nosewheel bay with a small sample of the original paint Israeli Magisters used for their own nosewheel bay interiors. Undercarriage legs were also fully detailed as were the inside faces of the undercarriage doors.

I'm depicting the aircraft in flight on its display stand so I've closed all the undercarriage doors and the undercarriages themselves have been glued within, their relevant bays retracted, so unfortunately you can't see any of that.

This photo shows the finesse of the intake lips and also that the earlier style of ejection seat has been depicted, and non-standard flight footwear for the pilot figures. However, (with reference to the famous British documentary 'The Life of Brian) the Israeli crew figures have had their noses moulded properly in proportion. So that's encouraging.

Here's the cockpit interior.

The very first thing that leaps out to even the casual viewer is that there has been no attempt in any respect to depict the individual crew member's oxygen regulator and selector box. I have carefully considered all the options on how to make the area look a bit more realistic and decided to leave it as it is, paint it black and forget about it. Which, upon research, is roughly the approach Fouga themselves took for the real original airframe.

Oddly enough, when I used the Tamiya liquid cement (....Starfix STILL haven't sent a replacement glue phial, BTW...) the joins for the tail stabilisers remained fairly soft and pliable for around nine hours. I was hoping to get a bit more progress on this one last night but for some reason the grade of this elderly plastic is curing much more slowly than I'm accustomed to.

This plastic seems lazier than even I am.....

It's a bit off that Starfix haven't included any IPs and those rivets are literally out of this world, looking to be at least a mile high.

Rivets have been carefully individually removed and numbered and stored elsewhere for any possible future steampunk builds.

Believe it or not, in spite of the near-Tamiya quality of this kit, I still found areas which needed a slight touch of filler.

There's a note on the instruction sheet reading 'Use only 'Starfix' Glue, and paint your model using only specialist 'Starfix' paints.

Guess what? Hannants are out of stock of bleedin' both.
