Does anyone know of any decent freeware for speeding your computer up and demolishing all the stuff in your own magic box which is slowing the performance down?

Got a laptop which is working now at glacial speed and needs unglueing - but on the basis of being stingy about it, I resent paying for the subscriber programmes which do the same thing.

Also, I suppose I need to clear the cache of redundant gubbins, but I've no idea how to do that - anyone know the magic words?

Ta in advance.

You're like me. I know how to use it but not maintain it. I got a free computer off Helen's dad from a batch he bought with some office furniture. Loads of stuff on it that I have no idea what it is or what it does or if it's important? Would like to clear it out but have no idea how......
One thing I will be doing is moving all my pics off it to remote storage. You'd be surprised how much photos slow it down.

Funnily enough this laptop is the only one I don't store photos on - I just use it as a mobile internet resource throughout the house.

First off you both sound like you could use the free version of CCleaner it will clear all the crap off your laptop/pc that is temporary i.e internet cache/temporary files/recycle bin etc you can also fix program bugs that may be making your device run slow as well as removing unwanted programs and stopping certain un-needed programs from running at startup i.e itunes/windows messenger/printers etc.

When that is done and you've cleared all the files you dont need etc, download and run the free version of Defraggler this may take a while but leave it running, it will tidy your files up on the HDD so that there easier to access making the process quicker and freeing up some Disk space

defrag is good and is alrready in windows
what this does is put files and pieces of files together instead of haviong them scattered all over the hd. this will improve response time whenever you do anything in windows the more fragmented it is the better it will be after

I regularly clear the cache and defrag. I think my problem is too much unused and unknown software....

Assuming it's running Windows, what version of Windows?

And can you give an idea of the spec of it?

I've always found a complete rebuild, every so often, does the trick.
I.e. reformat your hard drive and reinstall windows plus any software you need.
This completely clears the registry as well as any conflicts and removes all unwanted software.
Most current pcs have the windows software stored on a seperate partition on the hard drive.

Make sure you back up what you want to keep first :D

My 2 cents

It shouldn't be running too badly (although Vista Home Basic can be a bit of a memory hog at times, so 1gig of RAM won't always go too far).

As stated above, it'd be worth running CCleanera and a defrag. Uninstall any unwanted software (use something like Revo Uninstaller if possible) and see if that gives any improvement.
