Good day to you chaps.

I said I was going to bring a Corsair to this GB and I thought why not bring 2!? These are the 2 Hobbyboss kits that emerged from the box for the WHIF 2 GB but ended up going straight back when I ran out of time. So no P-47 or P-39 schemes on these now, they will get proper F4U-4 guises with aftermarket decals.

Now deciding on a scheme for these two wasn't as easy as i'd hoped. Due to both being the 6 50.cal early version of the F4U-4 this limited my options. I have some lovely schemes for the F4U-4B...

What i've decided to go for is another 'Death Rattlers' bird, this time No.11 to go with No.18 which is already on the shelf.

The other scheme is of that flown by the ace Capt K.A Walsh (21 kills). His aircraft is featured on the box art for the 1/32 Trumpeter kit.

Let the builds commence!

Hang on, school boy error! Walsh's Corsair is 1945...poo. Back to the drawing board! No 11 will still get built though.

Found another scheme! Unfortunately I couldn't find a profile picture of the aircraft but this is what i'll be building, No.302 from the USS Essex.

Nice. Can't go far wrong with a Corsair or two.

Update number 1. I've got a fair bit done with these today and bar a bit of sanding in places i'm ready to spray. I've scratch built some details in the cockpits, which wasn't much but really makes a difference.

I've done a lot of research into the aircraft, mostly with the SAM Corsair book. I'll be building the 'Death Rattlers' Corsair armed up with 5 inch rockets and two 105 gal drop tanks and have done some surgery on the pylons to make them more accurate. The Essex bird will be in training flight configuration with just the one 105 gal tank fitted under the starboard inner wing.

The speed at which some of you guys do your builds always seems to amaze me, coming along nicely though.

These kits come as one piece wings and fuselage so they don't take too long to assemble. I opened up the Airfix FAA Corsair kit before, thinking that I could spray a blue FAA example at the same time as spraying these, but that kit is horrific! These little 'easy' kits are fairly accurate with a good amount of detail (cockpit excluded). I may buy some more Hobbyboss F4U-1 kits and sand the wings for my future FAA builds.

I've given both a coat of Mr Hobby Navy Blue which sprayed like a dream. I'm not too sure about the colour though. The flash does make it look a bit lighter than it is though.

They're looking nice. How did they go together? The last couple of these easy-builds put me off a bit, they didn't go well at all.

They went together really well. The only fit issues i've had are the tank which don't fit together at each end. It's not a massive gap and easily filled with Mr Surfacer. These are numbers 5 & 6 of the 1/72 Hobbyboss Corsair kits to go on my shelf and i've not had any major problems with them.

Me too. I've got 40+ F4U-1 schemes that need kits to go, about 10 FAA examples, 6 French, 4 Kiwi and a Honduran example. Then the other 25+ kits in 1/72 / 1/48 scale need building  Did I ever mention how much I absolutely detest the Corsair?

Not as such, but it does sound believable.

I was so close to having the spraying complete but then some of the white around the cowling came away with masking tape, so i'll have to give it a go over with the sanding sticks, mask up the white area and spray it again. Tomorrows tasks, gloss coat, brush paint the gear, rockets and engines, add decals, bit of weathering, matt coat, finito!

A bit of progress from last night that I wasn't able to post due to Flikr going down. I didn't get them finished yesterday due to life getting in the way but they're not far off.
