One down, one to go! I'd have liked to have given it an oil wash over the gear but I don't have any white spirit to thin the oil paint, so I've decided to call it done. There are a number of inaccuracies with the kit, being a 1/72 Hobbyboss kit that's not surprising at all! The numbers on the cowling are too small, there aren't any provided for the gear doors and there's a much more obvious one that i'll leave for the Corsair purists to point out that I didn't realise until the decals were on. But in the whole, i'm chuffed to bits with this. I've not sprayed an exhaust stain before successfully without ruining the build, this is the first time I've used satin and matt varnishes and bar the wheels I used an airbrush on every part of the kit. ![]() IMG_1451 by harrison-green, on Flickr I'll put other pictures in the GB gallery. |

My original plan for the Death Rattlers bird was to go with pretty much how I made the other one, but then I found a photo of the real aircraft that i'm building and it was weathered to hell with some really heavy chipping on the wings. I'd heard about the hairspray technique, never tried it so why not give it a go? This is where I was at. Gloss coat had been applied and it was ready for decals. ![]() IMG_1454 by harrison-green, on Flickr I took some Tamiya flat aluminium (which is a pain to spray!) and gave it a good covering over the areas I intended to chip, well what I thought was a good covering but more of that to come. I then decanted some cheap hairspray that I got from Wilkos into my airbrush and gave the aircraft plenty of coats. ![]() IMG_1455 by harrison-green, on Flickr Once i'd done that I got out the Navy blue again and coated it until the aluminium was no longer visible. ![]() IMG_1458 by harrison-green, on Flickr I then realised that I hadn't glued the prop in place and it could be removed! Unfortunately my daughter then woke up from her afternoon nap and thus the paint was left to dry for much longer than i'd intended and therefore it required a lot more effort to get off. I coated the areas that I intended to chip with tap water which was allowed to soak into the paint allowing it to be more easily removed. Using a cotton bud with a tiny amount of airbrush cleaner on it I removed the paint of the larger areas that had little paint on them, like the walkway on the right inner wing and the leading edges. The other areas were picked away at with a pin in a random fashion and scratches added in places. Some areas had gone down to the plastic due to me not applying enough aluminium and hairspray in those locations. This was quickly rectified with a quick dry brush of aluminium. And this is where i'm at now. I've got to now gloss coat it and add the decals which thankfully mostly don't sit of the chipped areas. Those that I find do i'll let set with microsol and then using the pin i'll pick away at the area. I've seen no instructional videos for how to chip decals with the paint so i'm making that bit up as I go along. ![]() IMG_1459 by harrison-green, on Flickr ![]() IMG_1466 by harrison-green, on Flickr |

It's looking really good. The canopy looks as if it's not fully seated, I hope it is sealed or you may have some interesting cleaning up to do. |

It is, it's the hood that slides back along the fuselage when it's open. |

Off the top of my head I got the Mr Hobby Colour paints and the 3 of their range were; neutral grey, intermediate blue and navy blue. There's another company that do a range of all 3 but I can't remember the name. They're lacquer based paints and they do a range for RAF colours as well, such as dark green, dark earth and sky. You doing an F4U-1? I'll check the SAM book...wait one |

Reet, as you asked for Tamiya, the short answer is no idea because i've had the same problem with Tamiya not doing the right colours. That's why I tried Mr Hobby which tbh spray hell of a lot better than Tamiya. Tamiya do do a spray can of a dark blue which is a good match for Gloss Sea Blue but I can't find my Osprey book that says which one it is atm. What I do know; F4U-1A - 'four colour scheme' white (under-surfaces), intermediate blue (sides and lower outer wing), gloss sea blue (upper surfaces) and non-specular sea blue (upper wing leading edges and spine). By 1944 almost all F4Us including surviving A models were painted dark gloss sea blue all over. The paint i've used on mine isn't quite gloss sea blue but is close enough. I've got loads of photos and the blues were not all the same, some are quite light and others look even purple. I think what I used should have a tiny amount of a deep blue, like ultramarine or something added to it to give it a deeper colour but tbh once it's gloss coated it looks all right. In summary just go with what looks right  |

Oh and if you're doing the scheme of the National Air and Space Museum F4U-1A (which is actually an FG-1D in false clothes) i've got loads of photographs of it in one of my books that show it in detail. Basically if you want to know something about a Corsair, i'll probably either know it or have it written down..somewhere  I've become with the Corsair like you are with Hawks. |

I've got that kit, although not the one in the link. I had to laugh 'various air to surface missiles', yeah ok.... also the wheel wells are white, not green! According to my Corsair bible, the Academy 1/48 kit is a reissue of of the Hobbycraft kit and has "recessed detail, spine insert for mid-production canopy, inaccurate floored cockpit (the F4U didn't have a floor in the cockpit) inaccurate roof in tail well, positionable flaps, challenging fit". I think the most important issue to address here is that you found cheap Corsair kits on Ebay and no one informed me!!!
