over the last few weeks Airfix have released a range of 'Quick build kits' aimed at Kids aged 5+

No Glue...No Paint...Just BUILD!
The Airfix QUICK BUILD range of models piece together using push-fit construction technology, are pre-coloured, come with a display stand and decorative stickers. They make for fantastic playable models that can interact with the major toy brick brands, and these brilliant new Airfix models look just like the real thing when built!

'No glue, no paint, just BUILD! ’ This new way of building Airfix allows younger modellers to have fun at an earlier age (5+) and once they’ve built this collection they’ll be ready to move onto the Airfix Starter Sets (Age 8+)

Six Aircraft in the range:

Spitfire
Me109
F22 Raptor
Apache
Typhoon
Hawk

the range has a RRP 0f £9.99

Anyway here is the Hawk kit, helpfully reviewed with the assistance of a 9 year old

The Kit

What you get

well lets start with the box, a bright vibrant orange with lots of hints toward the rest of the Airfix range and the Airfix Club (1 flying hour is included)

A Bag of 'Bricks' some normal style bricks some moulded with brick attachments (ie the wings)

The kit has many pre moulded shapes but in essence uses 'Lego' or 'Megablocks' style bricks for the construction

an simple instruction sheet

and sheet of 'stickers' with some basic markings

The Build!

well it took Jamie 9 mins form opening the box to displaying the finished kit, so as expected not a difficult task

The Finished Kit

you have the option of a 'smoke pod' underneath or to add to a stand, it is comparativly 1/48 scale only slightly smaller than a 1/48 Italeri kit (see here with a 1/48 and 1/72 hawk)

In Conclusion

This is a nice attempt by Airfix to introduce modelling to the younget generation and no doubt a 5 year old could do this with a little help. Initally the price tag of £9.99 put me off but the range is selling for much less on ebay from good dealers

I'm looking at getting one of these for Helen's 5 year old nephew for Xmas, so the review was good to see.

I think it's a good idea to try and bring new blood into the hobby, but what a killing they would have made if they had made the Hawk Red.

Looks to be a brilliant idea which should tempt some kids. A good innovation.

I got some feedback last night from Helen's brother, who tells me the kit was well received and built within 5 minutes of opening. So, yes, certainly suitable for 5 year olds. I plan to get him the forthcoming Harrier for his birthday.
