Hopefully as you all may know I organised a base visit to Alconbury today. The weather held of for us and we were shown round by a very knowledgeable and helpfull member of the ARG (airfield research group). I also got to meet FTS and Davdubya which was a pleasure in itself as its nice to put faces to names. I have got hundreds of pics but in fairness I will just post a few so others can share theres. In no particular order ![]() 10612878673_0d366131af_z by sabre aviation photos, on Flickr ![]() 10612894193_f956fca14e_z by sabre aviation photos, on Flickr ![]() 10612672626_3759d802f5_z by sabre aviation photos, on Flickr ![]() 10612684186_2f3066e184_z by sabre aviation photos, on Flickr ![]() 10612933733_589374bf0e_z by sabre aviation photos, on Flickr ![]() 10612718276_e08b0c6311_z by sabre aviation photos, on Flickr ![]() 10612706265_a42c9ff91e_z by sabre aviation photos, on Flickr ![]() 10612718985_a1fd6f8bdf_z by sabre aviation photos, on Flickr ![]() 10612759196_12cb5aed86_z by sabre aviation photos, on Flickr ![]() 10612742885_4d8147319a_z by sabre aviation photos, on Flickr ![]() 10613017733_e9caa44da3_z by sabre aviation photos, on Flickr ![]() 10612798854_e2d26c8d31_z by sabre aviation photos, on Flickr So if anyone else would like to add theres then please do Thanks for looking and I intend organizing other visits to bases etc so please keep an eye on the shows and meets section. |

It is sad to see the old base sinking into such a state of disrepair, but obviously there isn't enough money and/or manpower to keep it in good shape. Darwin |

Excellent photos all round! It's sad to see a once neat and tidy base slipping into decay, but it's good that it gets documented. Very interesting. |

Lovely shots. I wish I could have gone. Shaun, your pics are verrrrrrrrrry verrrrrrrrrry wide......It's impossible to view them propery. How long has Alconbury been empty? It just seems to have gone totally downhill...... |

Sorry about that, I thought something was up as it was so bloody slow  I had aggro with flikr and all my settings were lost. Hopefully its all sorted now :D Its been since the late 80's early 90's but it is far from empty, its like a huge industrial estate. Have a look on google earth and you will see how much is used. It will mostly all be demolished soon except the listed buildings. |

Has to be more like mid to late 90's...I was at Wyton 92-95 and regularly used the bowling alley at Alconbury. Still, I suppose thats 20 years more or less....just doesn't seem that long. Those good old days before my first marriage

that sounds about right and out of interest I googled it 423d Air Base Group[edit] On 12 July 1995, the 710th ABW was inactivated and the 423d Air Base Squadron at RAF Molesworth assumed the host unit role at Alconbury as well as RAF Upwood. In July 2005, the squadron was redesignated as the 423d Air Base Group and its headquarters and mission was moved to RAF Alconbury. The 501st Combat Support Wing (501 CSW) was reactivated on 22 March 2005 at RAF Mildenhall. Its mission was administering the various geographically separated units in the UK. On 1 May 2007, the wing moved to RAF Alconbury. Time seems to have slipped by, I left school in 94 |
